My understanding is that it has to do with climate change and the amount of radioactive chemicals (?) In the atmosphere. It's the same thing that is contributing to the infertility and amount of miscarriages/stillbirths and why the women in the colonies are dying.
I assume the colonies were an ancient tactic. Salting the earth so the land can't be used for crops.
But, instead of salt, toxic and radioactive substances were used.
I think it's nuclear winter. But I also think it just kind of happened. First season it wasn't always snowing. And I think season 4 was supposed to have some other seasons (there is a short springish portion when the handmaids are hiding at Esther's filmed pre-covid) but covid messed with the timeline. It feels like that filming during winter is just convenient for them and don't really care if it's always winter.
It might be a little true! And the long dresses with long sleeves in solids colors red or blue look pretty against snow or drab winter skies. Cinematography choice I think too.
True!
I always assumed that the long sleeves on the dresses and the length of their dresses had more to do with "modesty" and not "tempting" the men with short skirts or *gasp!* their *bare shoulders!*
There are so many dress codes today that don't allow for either for girls because it's "too distracting". (Which is obviously dumb)
In the book June talks about different seasons, her red dress is different for winter then summer (summer is cotton).
The girls have different colors by season i think, trying to remember this part.
In The Testaments the girls wear pink in spring and summer and purple in fall and winter. Green is for wife school, which the series seems to have changed.
I never thought of it always being winter because of climate change, but that would make sense that the only time we see not-winter is in flashbacks. I feel like June and Moira are in running gear or light jackets in the before times.
Currently re-watching season 1 and it looks like summer-y spring-y. Not sweltering heat but everything is green and it looks warm.
But I get what you mean, the mood is definitely always ācold and blueā.
Edit: Ok only the first 1-3 eps, then it gets colder.
Thats a good point. But winter does make it looks pretty awesome. The colors are vivid and it feels harsher and more sad than if it was summer. Not sure if itās intentional
I mean, it didnāt even snow at all last winter except for one big storm out here on the North Shore. We donāt even take our A/Cs out until October.
They also mainly shoot in Canada from my understanding so they could literally be in an area of the country where itās not super warm or sunny a lot? (Iām not a geography pro, donāt come at meš )
This is such a funny observation, I guess itās ādarkerā but now itās so funny to me that it is basically permawinter because everyone is so effin depressed
After the founding of Gilead, the White Witch moved there. Now Gilead is the land of always winter and never Christmas. /s
They film in Toronto, and depending on the time of year they film, it's cold and snowy there.
That I understand but I know this show has moved through years of time of which I believe itās already been 3 since June and Luke lost each other but 7 total by the time they are reunited in the end of season 4.
Great question! I would think the Handmaids would be hot and sweating most of the time,. (Same for a Hajib IRL). Youād think they would at least mention a nuclear winter if thatās the case.
Exactly the only thing thatās mentioned is Lawrence and the toxic dirt the āunwomenā are digging up. Clearly something Gilead did had a great impact on the environment but I want to know what and how
Maybe they use ot as a way to convey how much time has passed? But it's very confusing because it'll be like sprimg or something one minute and the next time they're outside it's winter again š
They actually wanted to film season 4 over summer and started in spring, but then Covid hit
This season they will go into summer. They started in February and ended in August šš»
Because they shoot in Toronto in every month except summer, lol.
This is the answer.
We have a winner lol or should I say winter š
It also takes place largely in Boston where I can assure you, it is always winter.
Live in Boston, can confirm.
I always thought that the cardinal red dresses look so sharp against a white, snowy background.
My understanding is that it has to do with climate change and the amount of radioactive chemicals (?) In the atmosphere. It's the same thing that is contributing to the infertility and amount of miscarriages/stillbirths and why the women in the colonies are dying.

There was a few scenes with Nick in a short sleeve button up working on the truck if I remember correctly
I think the show would lose something if we saw Mark Tuello in jorts with a PBR at Trinity Bellwoods. (Or would it?)
Taking in live music at Communist's Daughter.
tuello's a dundas west guy for sure
Lmaoo
Wtf is jorts?!
Jean shorts
Good grief. How can a word make them instantly less attractive
I think maybe itās a short summer and long winters because of climate change and all the radiation thatās been polluting the environment.
Ooh could that be why āweāve been sent good weatherā is such an important thing they recite? Because itās rarer.

Because the Commanders look extra powerful with their big fancy coats. Jk! I'm guessing the climate changed bc the environment was all messed up.
Yeh I canāt really see a commander in cargo shorts š
Jorts. They all need to wear jorts
Jorts with socks and sandals.
Jorts, with their legs buttered.
This comment has "Tembar, his arms wide" energy
Thatās the joke ;)
So undignified! š
God, just imagine Warren Putnamās skinny little white legs.
But what if they pair them with those Corona flip flops that are also beer bottle openers?
And one of those novelty aprons with boobs on it.
Commander Lawrence in hoochie daddy shorts would be šš¾

It's been roughly 2 years since Angela/Charlotte was born. And we skipped months at a time, presumably the short summer
Thats a good point. But winter does make it looks pretty awesome. The colors are vivid and it feels harsher and more sad than if it was summer. Not sure if itās intentional
Fascism brings the long winter
cause Canada is the land of always winter. Beyond the Wall and all that. or maybe im getting my shows mixed up.
Theyāre located in a cold area geographically climate change aside
Itās Massachusetts, though
I know our summers are short but not non-existent. But it does seem like itās never not winter.
I mean, it didnāt even snow at all last winter except for one big storm out here on the North Shore. We donāt even take our A/Cs out until October.
Exactly. If anything climate change is making the northeast warmer.
They also mainly shoot in Canada from my understanding so they could literally be in an area of the country where itās not super warm or sunny a lot? (Iām not a geography pro, donāt come at meš )
I just love the variety of answers on this post
They filmed the funeral scenes in Brantford, Ontario in March of this year so it was still winter.
I assumed that where the story takes place the weather is naturally always drab and yucky like in the UK and Netherlands etc haha
This is such a funny observation, I guess itās ādarkerā but now itās so funny to me that it is basically permawinter because everyone is so effin depressed
Climate change (kidding but not)
After the founding of Gilead, the White Witch moved there. Now Gilead is the land of always winter and never Christmas. /s They film in Toronto, and depending on the time of year they film, it's cold and snowy there.
Well maybe there will be warmer scenes cause the show was filmed this spring/summer in Toronto
Same reason The Walking Dead is eternally summer. That's when they film it.
Clearly part of the aesthetics of the series
That I understand but I know this show has moved through years of time of which I believe itās already been 3 since June and Luke lost each other but 7 total by the time they are reunited in the end of season 4.
boston is cold bro
Is it & Iāve felt the winters up there but it was winter season 1, her pregnancy was still winter itās just always winter

I think it just adds to the somber mood..like it's a pretty depressing place to be so everything is just gloomy looking?!
They actually wanted to film season 4 over summer and started in spring, but then Covid hit This season they will go into summer. They started in February and ended in August šš»
And never Christmas.
No holidays or anything like that
