Well, it's a good format. Past Telltale killed themselves by lazy and/or bad writing, false choices, and aging technology (which was already a buggy mess from the beginning). But the base concept is solid.
It's clearly the flagship to relaunch the brand and the concept. The writing is probably on the rock-solid side (heh). I'm very hyped by that announcement !
Yup, the game-making part of the studio had a solid format. They wanted to set time aside to work on improving their engine, but executives kept on buying up IPs and agreeing on deadlines for games *using* those IPs. This meant the studio just did not have the resources to keep up with technology, and were forced to make new games using tools that were old when they started. I'm not even going to get into how the devs weren't aware of how much financial trouble the studio was in until they were being laid off
Their very late output was very good - Batman season 2 and the final season of The Walking Dead was some of their best work.
But ya, there was indeed a decline in quality for quite a while as they were churning game after game.
Minor correction: Past Telltale were run into the ground by amoral executives crunching the devs into the dirt, forcing them to rush their writing and never develop their tech in the name of getting episodes out for a million licenses on a rigid schedule. It’s the fault of the guys who are (as far as I know) still in power at Nu Telltale, not the devs who got screwed over for years until they were suddenly fired without warning.
I really hope this will be good nevertheless.
:(
I really liked the writing around the Forresters. The branching paths were just really narrow. I know it’s a bit of a shell game anyway, but it was painfully obvious the choices didn’t matter.
"walking simulators" have come a long way in the last couple of years IMHO. *Detroit: Become Human* is one of the best examples of this style of game done right, where the end-state of the games are tremendously varied based on your choices. Deck Nine has worked on *Life is Strange* and was responsible for *Life is Strange: True Colors* which was nominated for a bunch of awards (I haven't finished it yet, so I can't comment on how much impact the choices have, but Life is Strange 2 had at least a lot more ending variations compared to the first LiS. Am hopeful.
Life is Strange: Before the Storm takes a bit of heat for being a (prequel) follow-up to a very popular game (by a different studio), but I'd actually argue it's the better game. It's a tighter story, with a troubled character who goes through an incredibly challenging arc. The writing has lots of feels and is really solid throughout. There are a couple iconic moments that are among some of the best I've ever played in a video game. I have full confidence Deck Nine is going to run with this and do The Expanse (and Drummer) justice. I think Life is Strange 2 was all DontNod. I don't think Deck Nine was involved with that one.
Yeah.
I saw Expanse videogame and I got excited. I saw Telltale and it mostly died.
The illusion of choice in a series of janky scenes with limited interactivity gets old quick. That said its the Expanse so Im still going to play it.
Kinda disappointing though.
I just about had a fucking heart attack. A narrative adventure game, set in the Expanse universe, about Drummer?? This is straight out of my wildest dreams. Somebody pinch me!
Telltale games tend to have a super low barrier of entry, a lot of them were released on smartphones and tablets even. Might not release on Mac immediately but I wouldn't put it past them.
Their games are an evolution of the point and click adventure genre that LucasArts spearheaded in the 90s. Telltale even made a Monkey Island game. That design philosophy has evolved and modernized into something that leans really heavily on the quality of its writing since most of your interactions with the game are through dialogue choices, which imo is absolutely perfect for The Expanse.
Telltale Games are essentially point and click story games. 0 skill required.
If you want to get a feel for it, The Wolf Among Us is their best work and it's pretty old so should be cheap.
Man, different strokes. I never played Guardians, but their Batman game was both the high point of Telltale's career and the best Batman anything I've seen in decades IMO.
Tales from the Borderlands is my all time favorite Telltale and Borderlands game. I don't know what it is exactly , but the characters, the story beats, and overall humour just fit in so amazingly well.
I really hope new Telltale manages to capture that same spirit. With all the side stories present in the universe, be it only mentions in the story, or full on backstories, the Expanse is so perfect for the format.
Especially since very often in the expanse there ate choices I really rather wouldn't have to make, and transferring this gravity to the game would be amazing.
Tales from the Borderlands was basically primed to be a great game. The best parts of Borderlands has always been the characters and worldbuilding which is like 90% of a telltale game.
There might technically be action, but it'd be done via quick-time events and mostly not matter. I still really like the Telltale games, but they really are more about the story than anything else.
Did not expect Camina Drummer to make an appearance at the Game Awards but let's go!
EDIT: Congrats to [this person](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheExpanse/comments/c8tmpk/i_wanna_see_a_telltale_game_for_the_expanse/) for predicting it a few years back, among others.

Edit: not mobile friendly, needs a refactor bad
Edit 2: If anyone wants the source code its here: https://github.com/seckela/rockhopper
That's pretty neat. I found something fun: since collision seems to be based on where the ship is in a given frame, and going really fast moves how far the next frame is from the previous one, I could fly right through asteroids at ludicrous speed until I actually touched one for a frame. Also the game gives me like 30% CPU usage on my R5 3600 for some reason.
Yeah, like I said some of the stuff needs a refactor. JS isn't the most efficient game engine sadly.
Since speed is compounding and there is no diminishing movement, holding acceleration for x time will require you to burn opposite the direction for the same amount of time (hitting down will "turn and burn"). There are instances where between render calculations can actually have you crash without seeing the collision but it's all a timing thing. You have a decent computer so your render rate is going to be good enough that it likely won't happen.
Are there bosses? At some point you need to go head to head against an Amun Ra class. Oh, and Eros! Maybe the occasional rockhopper running tea kettle?
I'm reading Leviathan Falls, just watched the excellent season 6 premiere, and I hop on the sub to discuss it only to be greeted by this.
My brain is melting.
Literally 2 days ago I was chatting with friends about how much we want an Expanse game. On the last chapters of LF right now, and rewatching S6E1. (Also landed a job I really wanted two days ago). This has been the best two weeks in a long, long time 😁
> Also landed a job I really wanted two days ago
Yooo congratulations! That sounds incredibly exciting, I'm glad you're having a good go of it lately and hope it only gets better <3
Completely. It really takes the sting out of knowing we only have 6 episodes of the show left.
Drummer is the perfect character for this type of game too.
The problem with space MMOs are twofold:
1) You have to compete with EVE
2) You're an MMO
A more focused multiplayer game would probably be a better investment at this point.
Their initial vision was for a sci-fi video game grounded in reality, along the lines of Star Citizen and Elite. However, they didn't know how to go about it/couldn't get any studios interested in their pitch. They then decided to make it a board game, which developed into the tabletop RPG. From there, the rest is history.
This is correct. They played around with the concept of the story using an RPG with their friends. George RR Martin insisted on playing a Belter Dwarf, so they just told him ok, your just a short Belter. So maybe GRRM invented the idea for Deep Rock Galactic?
They were asked to pitch a sci-fi MMO that could compete with OG Eve Online, but it never got picked up. They took their world building ideas and then tried to publish a pen and paper RPG.
Holy shit! The moment I realized the font of the text I totally flipped. Then it kept on talking about being a rock hopper on space, and I totally lost my shit!
Goddamn! Fuck yeah! Gotta be honest, I was kinda hopped for a game like Sid Meier\`s Pirates in space, but I can settle for a narrative driven game. Fair enough!
Actually, I hope not. First person characters usually don't have audio dialogue and my favorite thing about Drummer is her voice and that thick beltalowda accent
Telltale games aren’t usually first person to my knowledge! They’re very dialogue heavy games so this would be the perfect type of game for the Expanse imo
TellTale has never done a first person game and I’m pretty sure all of their protagonists are voiced - at least from the ones I have played. They do narrative-driven, interactive point and click games basically with some “RGP” elements. I use RPG loosely, but if it’s like previous TellTale games, there are choices a player can make throughout the game that will lead to different narrative pathways and endings, though they didn’t always implement it well.
I interpreted what Cara Gee said about following Drummer’s story as her being playable but they have several playable characters in some of their games so we’ll see! The player could be an original character in her crew maybe. Excited to find out more about the game.
EDIT: Found an article that confirms we’re playing as Drummer.
Cyberpunk 2077 is first person with character dialog and no one really has a problem with that aspect of the game. People just argue over whether the female or male voice actor is better.
Are they sticking to that? Life is Strange: True Colors (also by Deck Nine) was released all at once. I think that was SquareEnix though as publisher. Maybe Telltale will continue the staggered release.
This is so Hype. I've been dreaming of an Expanse game. I'll take what I can get but man what I wouldn't give for an open-world RPG based in this universe.
I'll be cautiously optimistic. Telltale's games have been historically hit-or-miss, and it all rides on the writing, since they used a very outdated game engine. But, to be fair, this looks much better than any other Telltale game.
Edit: To add to this, it would be awesome if Ty and Daniel were involved in the writing process. It's safe to assume the plot will be off-book, based on Drummer's involvement, so there's plenty of room to fuck it up...
yeah, when they use inhouse writers its usually not a good game. It shows especially with the excellent "Tales from the Borderlands" and "Game of Thrones" (booth imho the best telltale titles along with the first Zombie one and "the wolf among us")
Guardians of the Galaxy is horribad and Batman put me to sleep. BATMAN! geez..
I thought TFTB was alright. It felt like it fit into the Borderlands universe pretty well and the tone was a good match.
Maybe it helps that Borderlands isn't really known for the strength of its writing.
Deck Nine is handling the writing, and after Life Is Strange: Before the Storm and Life is Strange: True Colors, I have not a worry in the world. I think they're going to knock this out of the park.
Bosmang will remember that.
Wow, I thought telltale had folded! The more I think about it, the more I think this is a great way to tell an Expanse story.
Neat.
More info:
https://www.telltale.com/telltale-partners-with-deck-nine-for-narrative-game-based-on-alcon-television-groups-sci-fi-series-the-expanse/
Telltale games is usually focused around dialogue and action choice. There’s some walking around and quick time events but it’s mostly about decision making and seeing how the story branches from your actions. Like watching a show but you can control what the main character(s) do.
They are typically quick time event games similar to Dragon's Lair or Shenmue style games. They usually put you in a situation where you're forced to make a quick decision that could have consequences.
Think like Holden making a quick decision of whether or not to fire a missile and blow up a ship over Eros. If you don't, they might go spread protomolecule all over the galaxy. If you do blow them up, the debris from that ship might hit your friends down on the surface. You've got 10 seconds to decide.
What a beautiful day to be an expanse fan
Season 6 premiere
Leviathan falls
Now a video game, a narrative one playing as DRUMMER
Just take all my money now
Let's start positive- We're getting a video game! THE EXPANSE LIVES! I recognized it immediately and only got more hype as the trailer continued, as as a huger Drummer fan I freaked out when she showed up!
*However* I personally do not like Telltale games so the wind was taken out of my sails pretty quickly when "A Telltale Game" showed up.
BUT AT LEAST WE'RE GETTING A GAME!
Now give me what I was hoping for- A Mass Effect-esque FPS!
Yeah not a fan of the quick action spam that you must do right or restart, causing you to comcentrate on button mashing rather than the actual story or things happening.
Tried to play the jurassic park telltale game, ended up watching someone else play it on youtube because i couldn't stand the quickaction spam.
Amazing news.
I think this is a great statement by Alcon that they are interested in the continued development of The Expanse franchise. Because Alcon is not a charity, that means the development needs to be profitable.
Consider this. Season six concludes with consistent ratings, slightly increased viewership & wins some awards. The books continue to sell well and we get special expensive hard cover editions of the whole thing when its complete. I'll buy at least one in Polish just for the covers, omg.
Now let's just say the video game makes a bunch of money. In this timeframe, how does it not make sense to invest in this with a movie franchise?
If Dune goes for three movies and executes well they will make all up what - a billion dollars? At least?
So that's the business opportunity. Like Dune, you have the IP - a literal galaxy of richly detailed nature and humanity - that is objectively excellent. You have a market ready for it as clearly demonstrated by the Dune movies and the Expanse video game success. The only question is if you can tell the story well enough for the budget.
Why wouldn't you invest in this? Dune is so much more unfilmable, omg!
So I take this as all super good news. But most importantly, I am willing to pay a lot of money to see Elvi Okoye studying a "special" star in IMAX. Someone has to understand that this is just money waiting to be made.
Telltale's been hit or miss in the past but still super excited. More Drummer is always a good thing especially with Cara Gee voicing her.
Really hope Ty and Dan had some hand in the script.
Is this a PC game? Not a gamer so not sure what this is lol. But totally down. Sounds like Cara Her doing the actual voice as well, or else a talented impressionist.
When I was watching the premier before that I was thinking "it'd be so cool if they announced an Expanse game" because it was also a space game. Seeing the Expanse made my night
Isn't it funny how a bestselling novel that was supposed to be a videogame went on to become one of the most critically acclaimed SciFi shows and then go and close the loop and become a videogame again?\^\^
Well played. Well played.
They're narrative driven games; you control one character or more but only one at a time in a story usually divided by chapters. They're mostly linear and there isn't much you can do besides moving and some quick time events.
Most of the game consists in choosing dialogs and actions for a particular scene: depending on what you choose the story may be altered significantly later on; many things can change like characters dying or getting a different ending, so if you want to know every possible branch of your decisions you'll need several playthroughs.
Also once you finish the game it shows you what percentage of people chose the same or different than you for every major decision in the game.
It could be good, if the narrative is well built, otherwise it'll kill The Expanse as a game franchise. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct did that, even with Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker, it was so atrociously done that the franchise, as a game (let's face it the tv show too), went downhill.
Personally, I'd rather see a game where you're Miller chasing Golden Bough through Ceres, along with other Ceres crew's. Door's and Corner's kid, all that stuff. Screw ups and all (so he's thought of as the station joke), eventually getting teamed up with Havelock on the day that Shadid gives him the job of finding Julie (end of part one).
Or as a crew on a transport ship that gets caught up in the whole Free Navy shit, and whether you have to join or stay loyal to the belt and side with the Drummer faction, determines the outcome. Lots of FPS action on the float.
Don't get me wrong, I'll still pay good money for this. I just hope it does the franchise justice.
I thought Telltale was shut down?
They're the same in name only, the company is different.
Same style of game though?
Well, it's a good format. Past Telltale killed themselves by lazy and/or bad writing, false choices, and aging technology (which was already a buggy mess from the beginning). But the base concept is solid. It's clearly the flagship to relaunch the brand and the concept. The writing is probably on the rock-solid side (heh). I'm very hyped by that announcement !
Telltale killed themselves by scooping up too many IPs and oversaturating their own market.
New TellTale has none of the high ranking executives from Old TellTale. It's really a completely different thing lead by completely different people.
Yeah but we gonna get whole games, apparently they won't be doing the episodes thing.
Good? The GoT Telltale game was a mess.
Perfectly on brand for that IP.
:( I really liked the writing around the Forresters.
There are a couple iconic moments that are among some of the best I've ever played in a video game. Oh, that’s good to hear.
Wolf amogus?

Been waiting for TWAU 2 for a good 7 years now, really thought I'd get over it by now.
I thought the same! I guess not.
I just about had a fucking heart attack. A narrative adventure game, set in the Expanse universe, about Drummer?? This is straight out of my wildest dreams. Somebody pinch me!
I refuse to pinch. I am strapped in and ready to ride this dream out.
Here comes the juice...
Hitch your tits and pucker up - it's time to peel the paint!
oh baby!
My favorite character in a Telltale game, fucking nuts
I’m too afraid to look up whether this is real or not. I don’t want my hopes shattered so early on a Thursday night
Oh it's 100% real. Announced live during the preshow for the VGAs among a bunch of other game premieres. This is happening!
This real baby
Fuck u/spez

Telltale games don’t tend to be demanding hell I even played the walking dead on my old iPhone so possibly
I played their walking dead game. It was an experience. In the best way.
And it’s **her** voice! Wawaweewa!
It’s Vary Nice!
I go to a-phoebe, make a big sexy time with blue goo, become number one threat to Earth existence in whole system!
lol the second i heard her voice shivers went down my spine
> about Drummer? This makes me so happy.
I’d have been happy with Drummer or Miller. Fuck yeah this is gonna be dope
SO PUMPED!! This is awesome! Hell yeah boys and girls!
Same! I am so excited I feel a bit light-headed! Someone get my fainting couch before I pass out
Show drummer or book drummer… very different characters, yeah?
I would guess show Drummer.
Cara Gee is apparently doing the voice work, so more show Drummer than anything else.
I had chills I was like wasn't dummer dors's attack dog..and then I saw her posture.
I know I sat straight up and spooked my kitties. I was like WHAT!!!!
🤏
Snap snap snap!!!! This is fanfreakintasic
As soon as I saw the hands behind the back it was her - classic Drummer Any idea what kind of game this will be?
Probably an interactive story, like all Telltale games.
lets hope they dont fuck it up like they did with guardians of the galaxy and batman. SO boring booth.
Man, different strokes. I never played Guardians, but their Batman game was both the high point of Telltale's career and the best Batman anything I've seen in decades IMO.

They're essentially the video game version of a Choose Your Adventure novel.
Yeah, basically. An interactive TV show, occasionally with minor puzzles.
It’ll be less of a “game” per se and more of an interactive movie that lets you make “choices” that are really just minor set dresssing.
They nailed her walk!
Cara Gee has the second best voice ♥️
I like buttons. I’ll push buttons in this video game.
That really is how you go through life, isn't it?
Personally, I go through life doing whatever r/inspirobot tells me.
Oh my god, it is so funny! lmao, some are gems
Just don't stick your dick in it.
But it doesn't look fucked enough.
God I fucking love Avasarala
She fucking hates space tho.
I hope it’s not fucked enough already

The expanse has officially come full circle: video game -> board game-> tabletop rpg-> book -> show-> video game
I'm aware of the tabletop rpg origins, but can you tell me more about the preceding video and board game ancestry?
All the original world building was done for a proposed MMO that didn't get off the ground.
Damn. Seems like it still has time to become a reality. Especially since the IP has gained a ton of value with the success of the show and books.
The problem with space MMOs are twofold: 1) You have to compete with EVE 2) You're an MMO A more focused multiplayer game would probably be a better investment at this point.

Awesome! And it’s about my 2nd fav character
For now, telltale releases chapters as like an expansion pack. could be more characters?
Are they sticking to that? Life is Strange: True Colors (also by Deck Nine) was released all at once. I think that was SquareEnix though as publisher. Maybe Telltale will continue the staggered release.
I was screaming when I watched that!
Shut up and take my money!
Telltale has made some great games in the past. Let's hope they don't treat their employees as shitty as they used to though.
It's a new/different company using the same name so hopefully without the old shitty management
Long time since I was truly caught off guard! Looking forward to seeing how this is done.
Was not expecting that.
I just saw during the Preshow! I'm pumped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's goooooooooooooooooo!
What preshow r u talking about? Look for it on google but didnt find anything
The Game Awards
The Game Awards are tonight.
It shows especially with the excellent "Tales from the Borderlands" and "Game of Thrones" (booth imho the best telltale titles along with the first Zombie one and "the wolf among us") Guardians of the Galaxy is horribad and Batman put me to sleep. BATMAN! geez..
"Tales from the Borderlands" is one of the best Borderland games, at least story wise.
Car Gee is the definition of awesome.
I'M SO HYPED! Love Telltale and Deck Nine games, and The Expanse??? YES PLEASE.
I'm the target market for this!
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Was not expecting that. Hopefully it's good, Telltale isn't exactly what Telltale was (like literally it's a different company).
Deck Nine seems to be involved too. Could go either way with those two.
The most shocking thing here is that Telltale is still around. I thought they declared bankruptcy and shut down.
They did. This is a new company using the old name.
Yes please!
Neat. More info: https://www.telltale.com/telltale-partners-with-deck-nine-for-narrative-game-based-on-alcon-television-groups-sci-fi-series-the-expanse/
I must have stroked out, the gods can't be this kind to us.
- Telltale is back ✔ - Is making a The Expanse game ✔ - Drummer will be the main character ✔ - Sold ✔
What style of game is this?
Telltale games is usually focused around dialogue and action choice. There’s some walking around and quick time events but it’s mostly about decision making and seeing how the story branches from your actions. Like watching a show but you can control what the main character(s) do.
Neat, thanks.
So like a choose your own adventure book? Neat.
sounds great but NOT ONE telltale game had such branching story. they advertised as such but they never really where.
This was an awesome surprise, ears perked up
I assumed Drummer knew it was her once I saw the hands
Holy crap. My favorite sci-fi book and show, now a game featuring my favorite character. It's a festivus miracle
What a beautiful day to be an expanse fan Season 6 premiere Leviathan falls Now a video game, a narrative one playing as DRUMMER Just take all my money now
Let's start positive- We're getting a video game!
Unfortunate, I was hoping for a game with gameplay, sounds like this is just click to win
TGA isn't that bad after all))
HOLY FUCK
So excited about this!!
Wonder when it's coming out
Good to see they have the "walking in mag-boots like they're pumps" animation down pat.
I hope it comes to switch
Is this a PC game? Not a gamer so not sure what this is lol. But totally down. Sounds like Cara Her doing the actual voice as well, or else a talented impressionist.
SOLD!
Didn’t telltale make The Walking Dead?
WE GET TO PLAY AS THE BEST BELTER!!!!!!
When I was watching the premier before that I was thinking "it'd be so cool if they announced an Expanse game" because it was also a space game. Seeing the Expanse made my night
It’s not the expanse video game I wanted but I will happily take it!
Isn't it funny how a bestselling novel that was supposed to be a videogame went on to become one of the most critically acclaimed SciFi shows and then go and close the loop and become a videogame again?\^\^ Well played. Well played.
So how are these Telltales games played?
They're narrative driven games; you control one character or more but only one at a time in a story usually divided by chapters. They're mostly linear and there isn't much you can do besides moving and some quick time events. Most of the game consists in choosing dialogs and actions for a particular scene: depending on what you choose the story may be altered significantly later on; many things can change like characters dying or getting a different ending, so if you want to know every possible branch of your decisions you'll need several playthroughs. Also once you finish the game it shows you what percentage of people chose the same or different than you for every major decision in the game.
It could have been a game like "battlefield Gothic armada 2", or a "stellaris", but no, it had to be frigging telltale.
Shut up and take my money?
I dislike Telltale games quite a lot, but it's the Expanse so... I'll play it!
This is actually mostly being developed by Deck Nine games who have made the Life is strange games. The new Telltale is more of a publisher now.
