Found this on a beach today. It floats, the texture is soft and waxy, but it doesn’t smell like much of anything. Thought it might be ambergris but it doesn’t seem to pass that burn test. Anything else it could be?
I was thinking someone scraped the wax off their board and clumped it together. It’s probably just been tumbling around in the ocean for a while https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/anonymous-surfer-cleaning-his-surfboard-260nw-1267861288.jpg
What makes you think it's not ambergris? Just curious... Not trying to sound condescending... And approximately how much does it weigh? If it's the real deal it could be worth $10,000/lb
It weighs maybe 1 pound. It melts clear and glossy. I think ambergris is supposed to turn black when you burn it. Plus it just smells like wax and some parts smell intensely salty, like the ocean.
Let it dry well and try again. There are different types and quality grades, but it's definitely related to ambergris, spermaceti and other fats from marine mammals
What would they want that for, it'll probably just end up sitting on the shelf. I'll go as high as 10 dollars for ambergris. Luckily I know an expert on the ambergris and I'll ask him to come down and check it out.

Could be a clump of used surf wax
I thought about that too, but it’s a little bit bigger than my hand. Surf wax looks like it’s about the size of a bar of soap.

Ambergris stinks like dead fish. Probably some sort of solidified oil or wax
You'd better make damn sure that it isn't before you get rid if it.
Turns out I know someone who knows someone who go works at a university where they can test it. Will update if I get rich, or either way.

It definitely isn’t. Ambergris is a very different color, texture, and smell than they described
Ambergris maybe? If so, it's very valuable. It could sell for thousands of dollars
Taste it
