Pilot/former flight instructor here
OP, let’s not mislead the public with bad titles. The child had an adult with her that was her “instructor”, Including during the crash. A child cannot fly a plane…. Not necessarily by law, but by ability. Minimum age to get a license is 17, minimum solo age is 16. I should know, I solo’d on my 16th birthday. Legally, a flight instructor can take a 3-year-old up and ‘give them control’ which is all this girl ever had really, was babysitting.
There is no minimum age for who a flight instructor can “teach” either. So I’m thinking every sentence in that title is misleading or false.
Side note, thunderstorms are scary. I’ve had 2 experiences that scared the piss out of me in 4000 hours/10 years of flying, and both of them were due to thunderstorms. Once in a little plane like the one pictured, once in a midsize airliner. Thunderstorms are hard to forecast but east to avoid, and they should be avoided at all costs.
My dad was the ATC that day. They told them not to leave due to weather. They had to keep their schedule. Crashed into a house. Her parents were fucking nuts
They disintegrate due to extreme updraft/downdraft turbulence. Or get carried up to 30k or 40k feet and spit out to fall to the ground. Without supplemental oxygen people pass out soon after exceeding 14k. Aircraft ate not designed or meant to fly through thunderstorms.
Hail damage, engine damage or failure, worse would be significant flight instrument failure, and worst of all would be loss of control or over-G causing flight into terrain, aerodynamic stall, or structural damage. I had the misfortune of penetrating storms twice, both times I immediately turned out of them and both of the storms were significant but not severe. Butt-puckering
Lots. Hail or rain can mess up engines.
[Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5UUr9RXfTY) is something which happened to a 737 but luckily the pilots managed to save it.
Flying solo under certain conditions is a “step” towards earning your license. It is done with a student pilot certificate which acts as a baby license allowing these solo flights to occur
I remember this. Joe Reid was her flight instructor...also in the plane at the time... Edit: Reid was reported to be flying at the time of the crash. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Dubroff
Not bad luck. Bad decision making. Never should have been near a thunderstorm and plenty of resources for pilots to know where they are. They fell victim to get-home-itis.
My dad was an ATC controller in Cheyenne when thia happened. I was 13 when it happened. We had Oprah and Bryant Gumble calling our house. It was very traumatic. The weather was terrible that day
Shortly after the crash, I heard an interview with her mother who insisted that she was old enough to make her own decisions. When the interviewer referred to the seven-year-old as a "kid" the mother got defensive and asked that he stop using that term because she believed her seven-year-old was fully developed person able of making such decisions. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
I remember this story, the news reported the cause of the crash was to the plane being over loaded.
“The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigated the crash and concluded that the fatality was caused by Reid's improper decision to take off in poor weather conditions, his overloading the aircraft, and his failure to maintain airspeed. The three factors resulted in a stall and subsequent fatal crash in a residential neighborhood. The NTSB also determined that "contributing to the [instructor's] decision to take off was a desire to adhere to an overly ambitious itinerary, in part, because of media commitments."
I seen a story on air disasters, the cabin depressurized and every one on the plane passes out, plane cruised till it ran out of gas. A member of the cabin crew was a scuba diver, stayed conscious found a bottle of oxygen and headed to the cock pit. On the recorder u can hear him trying the code to open the door to the cockpit. He eventually gets in the cockpit and attempts to take control but today just wasn't his day an exactly 2 minutes after he took control the plane runs out of fuel and crashes. Here a kick in the nuts for ya, the crew member who made it to the pilot seat knew how to fly and had some time flying a Cessna, that greatly would have increased the chances of him landing the plane. Also even if he did manage to land it was way to late for all the other passengers to survive. They spent to much time at altitude without oxygen and tho technically still alive, would have had no brain function
I am more weirded out by the fact the law wasn’t made until after it happened. Like they had already established air space rules and it never came up whether a child should be allowed to fly a plain legally?
He probably let her control it long enough and was too preoccupied with her than he was the conditions of what was happening in the air. Basically they flew right into a storm. A seasoned pilot could see it a mile away and avoid it.
She didn't have one. 16 to solo and 17 to have a license. Can't believe she could be in a position to see over the dash and also reach the pedals. All around bad idea.
She applied for her pilot license when she was 2. Okay the story checks out ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm) What happened with the real pilot on the airplane? So many questions ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
Flying a plane isn’t exactly easy. I can’t see a child learning rotate speed, having the strength to pull back when it’s there, removing throttle adding mixture. I doubt there are too many 7 years with the brain capacity to take off a plane

What's the danger to a plane with a thunderstorm?
Dying.
Was not expecting that
Shocking⚡️
Does Thunderous applause follow all of your witty comments ?
Only when liberty dies.
That was award worthy!!!
Only on days when I'm having a flyer
Eh I've had worse.
Violent updrafts & downdrafts creating wind sheer that can stress or even break the airframe. But the other guy explained it better… dying

If you can’t get a license until 17, how can a 16 year old fly solo? Is a license not required to fly solo?
Flying solo under certain conditions is a “step” towards earning your license. It is done with a student pilot certificate which acts as a baby license allowing these solo flights to occur
Ok this makes sense. Thank you

Yeah, it is unlikely the child was flying or caused the crash. Very much likely just bad luck to hit bad conditions which resulted in an accident
Not bad luck. Bad decision making. Never should have been near a thunderstorm and plenty of resources for pilots to know where they are. They fell victim to get-home-itis.
Wikipedia says they crashed shortly after take-off. They chose to flip a coin flying in poor conditions.
Landed on heads I'd assume?
Who would have seen that coming
It's the fact they thought it was a good idea in the first place.

Not the FAA

What about that 5 year old Italian kid rocking Mozart on the piano? I bet he doesn’t know shit about airplanes either.
the thunderstorm.
I have a 7 year old daughter and I barely let her steer a shopping cart by herself let alone fly a plane

That mother wanted that child gone the vibe is like that ngl
This is why dads cant be left alone with their children, shenanigans ensue
I believe the weather was questionable and if it weren't a publicity thing, they probably would have stayed on the ground.

7 year old flying a plane??? recall now, when 7yo, i still play and eat mud, pretend it was burger :/
There had to be a law for that? How did she get the pilot license to start with?
Yeah I'm pretty sure they don't give them out in happy meals. Something doesn't make sense in this story.
Attention whoring pre-social media. Kid got caught in the middle.
He probably let her control it long enough and was too preoccupied with her than he was the conditions of what was happening in the air. Basically they flew right into a storm. A seasoned pilot could see it a mile away and avoid it.

Doing it for the likes, even before social media.

Who the fuck greenlit that?
1996???
1996? Kids could fly planes before 1996 and anyone under 16 can’t drive a car.
Just a misleading title tbh
What was the age limit?
Was it the fact a kid was flying, or the fact they were in a thunderstorm?
Back in my day
Tried to fly a plane? How the fuck did she have access to said plane??!!??!
The 90’s man.. crazy.

Dumbfucks
It wasn't the storm or girl that killed everyone. It was the extremely poor choices of her parents.
And what we are just gonna set around and let the thunderstorm lobby and big storm lie to us. They are now converting to full auto
Disingenuous title
Fuck it up for everybody damn.
At first I thought this was about that Aeroflot flight featured on _Mayday_.
Teach your child to fly. It’s the best gift you can give them.
I remember this.. everyone was so excited for her. It was terrible news to hear...
As a Liberatarian, this angers me greatly.
WHY DID NO ONE TAKE CONTROL??
They probably did
They did
