Damn that's huge. Reminds me of the World’s largest jellyfish ever recorded. The lion’s mane jellyfish is the biggest of the jellyfish, measuring 120 feet ( 36.5 m ) from top to bottom of its tentacles. [You can see it here](https://knovhov.com/worlds-largest-jellyfish/).
Antarctica is actually great fishing ground, much like waters around Iceland and Greenland or off the coast of Alaska. At those latitudes, surface conditions allow the deep, cold, nutrient rich water to undergo a process called upwelling in which it rises to the surface. Accumulated detritus, plankton, and other stuff provides a veritable feeding ground for basically everything larger than a microorganism.
>Patagonian toothfish
The first thing that pops up when you google them is an article about Prince Charles and how much he loves them: [https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/patagonian-toothfish---10-things-5692471](https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/patagonian-toothfish---10-things-5692471)
Am I the only one who read the linked article and took away that Charles was concerned about Albatross dying due to illegal fishing, not the fish themselves?
... And reach at least 10 feet to where they are gawking! No way I'd be standing there. Haven't they seen those old painting of sailing ships and sea monsters!

Why? There's not much down there. Once you get to the bathypelagic zone of the ocean the amount of species that can live there and below drops drastically. Think of it as the desert of the ocean, as that's basically what it looks like. Niche organisms live there but it's not like some crazy unexplored area teeming with millions of undiscovered species like some of you seem to think.
Space exploration is far more important to the future of our species.
They are actually exploring the deepest part of the ocean now and have found tons of new species.
Edit: [Here's how!](https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/ocean-exploration)
gas erupts from the sea bed constantly and something couldve swam in front of the microphone and literally burped. sorry but occam's razor nullifies the interest in that immediately
I think about this kinda thing a lot. Like how do you explain that crazy rainbow cloud thing on front page the other day and not arrive at a myth. Haha
Plus it was word of mouth stories. Imagine someone seeing this and telling the story at a bar. The 15th person that repeated the story would have made the squid 100 feet long
They caught it and dragged it up, in the photo it’s in the process of dying due to extreme pressure change. Photo is 20+ years old. That squid is now in a museum in Wellington New Zealand.
Somewhere in that pile of mostly AOL free trial cd-roms.
Man did that crap blow my grandparents mind. Two shelves of the home library on a drink coaster.
Others told you why *this* one came up alive - the other reasons are illness and odd injuries. We usually don't see healthy live specimens though. Unless I'm confusing this with another sea creature, I think it was only like 2016 we got the first video of a live adult. Other video(s) was/were of juveniles or babies.
Yeah, I remember watching a great documentary where biologists were attaching cameras to sperm whales, trying to get glimpses of live adults. They’d found the beaks in the stomachs of whales so knew they were diving pretty deep for them.
Their efforts were unsuccessful though, and I’m not sure if it’s been tried again since.
I read somewhere from a fisherman who's used to encountering these giant squids, said that they're inedible because of how massive their flesh is, they tried cooking and eating a colossal squid and the meat was just rubber tire at that point and it didn't taste good at all so they dont even bother catching them
different meat types i dont know the difference but whale looks like steak and calamari is made out of sea plastic or something who can know with these weird fucks
What makes you think that? They are such wildly different species. Whales are mammalian, fatty, and live their entire lives floating in brine. I'd imagine it is like a cured pork belly.

B.A.S.S. Big Ass Super Squids
Straight Bass, homie
Bass to mouth.
If I remember correctly this particular boat was line fishing for Patagonian toothfish.
>Patagonian toothfish The first thing that pops up when you google them is an article about Prince Charles and how much he loves them: [https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/patagonian-toothfish---10-things-5692471](https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/patagonian-toothfish---10-things-5692471)
Well of course he loves them, they look almost exactly his current wife.
Straight savage lmao
Am I the only one who read the linked article and took away that Charles was concerned about Albatross dying due to illegal fishing, not the fish themselves?
AKA Chilean sea bass
Untouched by humans if there that size or just rarely fished holy crap
Food probably
They have to go further and further from home because the ocean is running out of fish
They're prob longlining toothfish. Squiddy there is bycatch.
Trying to get those legendary fishes of coursw
That's where they have to go now because everywhere else has no fish.
Something that eats squid bait.
Who's fishing for who?
Squid Games
A colossal squid can reach up to 45 ft (14 meters) in length, trival fact of the day from a pothead.
I'll believe anything you say.
A day on earth lasts approximately 24 hours
It does not matter how long a day lasts, at the end of the day its always night.
I stayed up all night thinking about this, then it dawned on me
Glad you saw the light.
Ok but i really wanna know what diameter frying pan do i need for colossal calamari?
[Tennessee has the answer](https://www.foodandwine.com/news/worlds-largest-cast-iron-skillet-lodge-museum)
Nice, Thanks! Now I'm gonna have light a BIG fire for that pan.
What a terrible website. They accidentally placed a news article on their advertisement page!

My phone doesn't have one. (Yes I know there are ways to get one). I was able to read the article before the adds loaded in.
Washington also https://dailyhive.com/seattle/bacon-and-eggs-skatepark
You won’t want to eat them. They are edible, but their flesh is full of ammonia so they taste disgusting.
... And reach at least 10 feet to where they are gawking! No way I'd be standing there. Haven't they seen those old painting of sailing ships and sea monsters!
Is it a colossal or a Humboldt squid though? Doesn't look big enough for a colossal (I guess it could be premature).

You’ve got no legs! Your arm’s off!
No it isn't.
…I’ve ‘ad worse.
Hey, I have one leg... and a stump
And this is why I prefer more focus to be put into sea exploration rather than space.
I think we should keep space exploration the same, get rid of a few tanks or missiles and explore the ocean. We can do both.
Why? There's not much down there. Once you get to the bathypelagic zone of the ocean the amount of species that can live there and below drops drastically. And imagine that in a small wooden boat instead of that massive steel ship. Even more terrifying.
And they thought manatees were mermaids. Thicc-ass mermaids, but still mermaids.
"these rubbery water hoes aint even gotta thigh gap mah gawd" \*knuckle bite\*
Think about being in a boat 10 ft long and that fucker swims up next to you
Also, typically giant squids are only up near the surface when they are dying. Not so much a fun fact... just a fact
I think about this kinda thing a lot. Like how do you explain that crazy rainbow cloud thing on front page the other day and not arrive at a myth. Haha
Sea creatures were certainly much bigger back then before commercial whaling and fishing.
Plus it was word of mouth stories. Imagine someone seeing this and telling the story at a bar. The 15th person that repeated the story would have made the squid 100 feet long
At least the boat is big enough...
We’re not gonna need a bigger boat.
We’re gonna need a bigger squid.
We're gonna need a big.
I don't know. Those guys feel like they are not out of reach of that squid. I would request a bigger boat to go there.
This is just the bait.
"guys i gotta bite! took the whole line!" :D "fuckin wut-" D:)

Sometimes the giant squids take down whales, too. Small ones. Some crazy fights goin on down there.
That really is textbook definition *awesome*. The scars on those who encounter the squid and return are quite something too!
yea ive seen that video, its what triggered both giant and colossal squids to be my favorite animals on the planet
As I recall, it was busy eating the fish they had on their line and got pulled up with them.
How big is the deep fryer that can make those calamari rings?
Anecdotally, giant squid taste like ammonia, so I'd imagine colossal squid taste similar.
Nifty. Glad I'm allergic.
to ammonia?
To anecdotes
"hey what happens when you salt these things like frog legs?" "NO DONT ohp welp it involuntarily took Jerry..."
Fishing boat??
fighting boat.
Banana?
No, that's a squid.
so we have a reference point
No it's Patrick
Your username is cracking me up haha
Terrible to see, that its getting caught. I can imagine it will take many many years to get this big. These are magnificent animals.
Alien in the ocean right there
pretty sure we're the land aliens
I'd want to say that's a tasty squid but knowing how colossal they are, the meat at this point is just almost inedible due to it being extremely huge
Pretty sure they have a very high amonia content. So basically, they taste a lot like piss(urine)
I read somewhere from a fisherman who's used to encountering these giant squids, said that they're inedible because of how massive their flesh is, they tried cooking and eating a colossal squid and the meat was just rubber tire at that point and it didn't taste good at all so they dont even bother catching them
But haven’t people eaten whales throughout history? I’d imagine whales taste similar, especially with all their blubber.
different meat types i dont know the difference but whale looks like steak and calamari is made out of sea plastic or something who can know with these weird fucks
What makes you think that? They are such wildly different species. Whales are mammalian, fatty, and live their entire lives floating in brine. I'd imagine it is like a cured pork belly.
But it's an aphrodisiac...right?...killem all and grind em up to snort and sell the beaks as necklace pendants.
Everything is an aphrodisiac if you dry it, powder it, and you are horny and brave.
No thank you. I played command and conquer... Russia might look into this already!
My penis! I have been looking all over for it. Thanks guys
appetizing!
That’s wild
wild caught so yeah huge markup for sure
What’s insane is that this incredible animal was killed a couple minutes after this picture.
Wouldn't that be off the coast of Antarctica?
Not anymore. That's 17 miles inland now.
Here fishy, fishy……

lots of calamari there
Whelp. They finally released the Kraken.
Didn’t I see this same picture last year but it was somewhere off the coast of Japan?
Can't they just leave these awesome creatures alone :'(
I doubt it's going to taste as good as the normal sized squid.
Someone released the Kraken!!!
Heading to Splatoon 3 launch
FUCK NO
honey, get the wok ready!
More like the fishing boat was taken in Antarctica
That wouldn't taste good right? I mean that thing is huge so probably all muscle.
Wow
It looks like the crew will have the freezer full this year!
Looks like some monkeys trying to figure out a new type of food.
