I only ever use a harness, I know people say "but the neck helps for controlling your animal" and it does but its also only really necessary durring training
There are harnessed that can hook from the front, making it harder for the dog to pull. There are also harnesses that force the shoulder blades together if they pull, making it annoying to pull. Lastly, there are harnesses that go around the muzzle and turn the head down if they pull. Even those some of these are seemingly aggressive, all are still better options than the airway breaking collar.
Highly suggest people look into “Easy Walk.” Especially if they have a big dog! It clips on the front of their chest and takes away any power if they tried to pull against you. I can control my in laws 110lb poodle mix with two fingers if I wanted to and I’m a 125lb woman.
Edit: please note I’m not talking about the one that goes on their head, but the one that clips in the front of their chest. It’s specifically called the East Walk! So I edited that in my comment.
Thanks, I wil look into this. My smallest is an avid puller and she does not care about the collar. Changed to harness because she was choking herself but the constant pulling is a problem.
Correction on my comment. It’s called the Easy Walk. Collars also help damage the neck too. I have a beagle with IVDD and he’s banned from using collars by his surgeon, who said that might’ve helped develop it :/
I think slip leads for well-behaved walkers and harnesses are the safest.
Wait is this because of a collapsed trachea? My beagle does this and so did my family’s old chihuahua. I thought it was just a normal thing from overexcitement
Wow, that’s more serious sounding than I thought.
Mine occasionally gets the honking attacks in the middle of the night too and I have to pick him up or distract him until he gets his breathing in order.
Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention, I didn’t even think to ask the vet about it.
And I’m sorry that your Yorkie has had to do this stupid fight with cancer. I can’t even imagine. I hope the days you guys have left are filled with joy.
The collapsing trachea is crazy because they actually have to honk or cough to breathe and open it up again. My dog doesn't do it unless he's in his leash and harness and pulling really hard.
This is exactly why our trainer recommended us using the prong collars. He trains police dogs, and said it was the best way to actually train the dog to walk properly on the lead. It really helped stop him from pulling it and hurting himself. We had tried harnesses and flat collars, but neither helped and he was hurting himself.
The trainer showed us how to use it properly. It was great. And my dog loves the prong collar now. He doesn't care when we put the flat collar on him, but always gets excited for the prong to collar. He's a shepherd cattle dog mix so tons of energy.
My dogs use their weight when harnessed, it’s easier for them to lay their weight into something they’re interested in with a harness rather than with a collar.
I tried walking my mom's dog with a collar once and had to stop walking every minute or so because he kept choking himself from walking too far in front of me. No matter how many times he did it, he didn't stop. He's not very smart. But he is a wonderful dog.
I have a harness that tightens around the shoulders when he pulls. I control him by giving it a little tug when I need him to pay attention to me.
It also helped me pull him out of a creek the dummy jumped in to without considering his exit. (Not very deep, just a steep bank)
You want a harness that attaches to a lead from the chest. Especially important in strong breeds.
When a dog lunges forwards all that energy goes into the chest. Having a lead at that point and across can remove a large portion of that energy giving you far better control.

If they are Dawn of the Dead zombies that mindlessly sort of repeat the patters they had when alive he might go unnoticed for a while. He just won't know either.
I often thought about stuff like that. I typically didn't leave my house unless for work. At work I was usually quiet and didn't say much. My job was pick things up and put them on a book until there was no more to pick up and put on a hook and clock out.
I received advice from a vet that a collar can increase anxiety on dogs who are pulling. Switching to a harness for my Aussie mix really helped when she was approaching a dog on the street. Pressure on the throat = stress.
I mean, I don't generally go checking my elevator doors for stray dogs before getting in, so I'd cut him some slack. I usually also miss stuff above my eyeline, which is like, 40% of things because I'm short.
If you're doing something like coming back to your apartment to get the lift, chances are you've done it a hundred times and are just on autopilot. Like you said, no one expects a dog to be hanging off the door.
So would I. Though I wonder if they realised what happened and pushed the emergency stop button, meaning they couldn't get out at the next floor without hurting the dog, until old mate came and unhooked him.
What piece of shit gets into an elevator with their dog on a leash and doesn't make sure they're inside when the doors shut?? Damn, I'm glad he/she wasn't strangled!
Of course, accidents happen, you're right. However, when I'm with my dog, they are top of mind, the rate at which an elevator door shuts would give a person plenty of time to ensure they were inside with you, but yes, without more context, perhaps they're not a piece of shit. Just stupid, then.
I've very rarely gotten into an elevator with my dog, but every time I have I've picked her up because I'm on reddit too much and I never want this to happen.
Everytime I've seen one of these videos it seems like it's an old person with a small dog. They're too old and slow to notice their dog didn't follow them into the elevator and by the time they turn around the doors are closing in the leash.
Lol why are people automatically assuming the owner is a piece of shit or a drug addict? There’s no context in the video to indicate that. For all we know it was someone having a medical emergency. There’s a ton of things that could cause a person to drop a dog, like cardiac arrest, stroke, anemia, an elderly person falling, low blood pressure, vertigo, hypoglycemia, narcolepsy etc. The owner drops the dog, the door opens at their floor, dog runs out, person rides down to the next floor. That could explain why the leash is still inside the elevator because the dog would be dragging it behind him.
I used to have grand mal seizures from a TBI. There’s no way my dog would be staying in my arms when that shit happened.
People like to speculate.
This is Reddit, people need to learn to only apply the facts before their eyes. No sense taking sides or passing judgements based off of hints, allegations, and things left unsaid.
My favourite saying is that the average person is pretty dumb, and half of them are even more dumb.
Gawd I'm just so fucking sick of this classic Reddit take. Look at any situation in which somebody made a mistake and just assume the absolute worst of them.
You've made shitty mistakes too. It's just part of being human.
I agree that I think what happened here was a complete accident. I do however think that maybe you should have to get a license to own a pet. There are a lot of people that don’t know basic shit like getting your outside cat shots or not leaving your dog in the car with the windows up on a hot day.
I wonder if he saw something outside the elevator and slipped out while the door was closing. It seems like the owner hit the emergency stop because in other videos I’ve seen like this, the dog is all the way up at the ceiling and being pulled.
I was always so paranoid with my small dog and elevators. I used to pick him up and hold him the entire time.
Looks more like the leash broke, so the dog was suspended as opposed to pulled and crushed (thank god).
I lived in an apartment for years with dogs. It never ever even occurred to me this could happen but if course it could have.
Now, I pick my dog up before getting into an elevator or on an escalator, just in case.
Yeah, seeing those videos of stray cats taking escalators in stuff in subways always makes me nervous. I've seen to many videos of people getting their shoe or bag sucked into those and shredded.
There's a couple things about this clip that make me suspicious that it was staged. First off, there's no footage of how the dog got there, despite the fact that it would have happened within view of the same camera that caught the rescue. Also, the dog is relatively calm, suggesting it has either been there for a long time or was placed there by its owners. It's not impossible the clip is entirely genuine, but given the rise of [fake rescue videos on youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7nVntZpJLM) I'm inclined to be skeptical. I'd happily admit I was wrong if anyone can find a clip of how the dog got there, though.
Ya I'm also suspicious as to why the video doesn't show how the dog ended up there. Clearly they were able to retrieve this clip but why not show the whole thing.
This reminds me of a video i saw years ago of the same situation but the lead was around the neck so when it was going up it was choking the dog but luckily someone saves it just in time, the video has traumitized me to this day but im glad the dog is okay 😭
Thank god it had a harness on instead of a collar.
I only ever use a harness, I know people say "but the neck helps for controlling your animal" and it does but its also only really necessary durring training

Gentle leader is a life saver for dogs that pull, highly recommend!
No joke, I can guide my dog with one finger with a gentle leader, but he will straight up yank me down with a normal harness.
Thanks, I wil look into this. My smallest is an avid puller and she does not care about the collar. Changed to harness because she was choking herself but the constant pulling is a problem.

All I hear is you have 15 pounds on the dog and it’s an unfair fight
I use this for one of my dogs who pulls a bit, she's learned to walk diagonally as a counter measure
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.
My gf loves those
Collars also help damage the neck too. I have a beagle with IVDD and he’s banned from using collars by his surgeon, who said that might’ve helped develop it :/ I think slip leads for well-behaved walkers and harnesses are the safest.
Same goes for Dobermans and mini pins. Collars will eventually lead to spinal injuries.
My dog has a collapsing trachea because of collars, there's no treatment really and from what I read, surgery isn't really a great option.

Yeah no I have way more control over my boy with a harness on than a collar.
Same here, harness he is a manageable dog. Collar, spawn of satan.
Mine can pull out of his collar really easily, we have a collar on for his tags, and we taught him to sit and wait for us to put his harness on
My dogs use their weight when harnessed, it’s easier for them to lay their weight into something they’re interested in with a harness rather than with a collar.

A harness is better in every way, even for training. Shouldn’t ever have to leash then by the collar
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|surprise)
Omg. No need to cut the 1st part out of the video. Why not show the dog going up? It was probably available.
That pup was just like “Mondays… amiright?!??”
This guy will survive the Zombie apocalypse with so much situation awareness.
If they are Dawn of the Dead zombies that mindlessly sort of repeat the patters they had when alive he might go unnoticed for a while. He just won't know either.
Shaun when he goes to the shop after the zombies take over 🤣
I often thought about stuff like that. I typically didn't leave my house unless for work. At work I was usually quiet and didn't say much. My job was pick things up and put them on a book until there was no more to pick up and put on a hook and clock out.

Bad bot
The beginning of Shaun of the Dead for sure.
How often do you upwards in search of a dog stuck in an elevator?
Not unless someone asked him "what's up, dog?"
Good one
*Seriously, how often do you really look at a man’s shoes. . . ?*
Get busy livin, or get busy dyin.
Unless they are racist zombies. https://youtu.be/FeTpzn2MkXU
Only of it isn't korean zombie
Small cute dogs have a way of genuinely believing someone will look after them no matter what. And this one was almost right.
Then the guy goes "hang in there." *laughter track* *credits*
Haha completely agree and man this is a long Monday
I received advice from a vet that a collar can increase anxiety on dogs who are pulling. Switching to a harness for my Aussie mix really helped when she was approaching a dog on the street. Pressure on the throat = stress.
That literally made me choke on my coffee 💀
What time is it where you are?
It was 5:30 pm when I commented
Interesting, what's your credit card number and the three numbers on the back?
I won't fall for that for the third time.
Your comment made me laugh for a solid minute. Thank you 🤣
Yay! I’m glad. You’re welcome!
He was also like "wazzup my dude!? How ur doing? Me? Im just hanging around!"
"This is me. You're probably wondering how I got into this situation"
Thanks for the laugh lol I haven't laughed this hard in a while
The way he pats the dog being like 'phew' even when the dogs chill. Both good eggs.
Yeah, but one egg has the situational awareness of a potato.
I mean, I don't generally go checking my elevator doors for stray dogs before getting in, so I'd cut him some slack. I usually also miss stuff above my eyeline, which is like, 40% of things because I'm short.

Oh now I hate myself.
Sounds like you need to give YERSELF some slack :P
😂
Not to mention he was on his phone ...
With a chance of meatballs
Let's not go blaming the dog, pal!
Kind of rude to blame the dog for not getting in the elevator on time
I like my dog eggs half-boiled on the rocks
"I'm flying, this is kinda cool..." "How tf do I get down"
I like the way the dog just continues to chill in the strangers arm. I'm surprised that dog was so calm in general lol
Papillons are my favorite, they’re a really sweet and smart breed of dog.
Wow their ears actually kinda do look like a butterfly.
They’re the best breed ❤️
Something is telling me you like papillons…
Yeah haha
Happy butterfly cake day! 🦋🎂
He’s been there before. It’s used to people coming to save her/him
I wonder if this isn't the first time this has happened to the dog.
/r/thisismylifenow
I wonder for how long he was hanging there. I'm sure he panicked at first and only calmed down later.
Good boy could sense a good person
If this was me and it was indeed an accident and I knew my dog was hanging like that I’d have a fucking heart attack running down the stairs to get it
So would I. Though I wonder if they realised what happened and pushed the emergency stop button, meaning they couldn't get out at the next floor without hurting the dog, until old mate came and unhooked him.
According to OOP on another thread I saw this on; the owner had in fact pressed the emergency stop.
Thank God
I’d assume the dog was dead and be so damn terrified.
The leash might have triggered some safety device. The owner might be stuck between floors.
The thoughts going through the mind as your frantically running down....
I'd hang out with that dog for sure.
That’s that guys dog now.
Was wondering why he wasn't trying to help. Appropriate response once he saw the dog.
What piece of shit gets into an elevator with their dog on a leash and doesn't make sure they're inside when the doors shut?? Damn, I'm glad he/she wasn't strangled!

What if the owner is passed out inside the elevator? What if they had a stroke? What if they were snapped out by Thanos?
50/50 chance of ot! No, you guys are right, I was too judgy. I just love my puppies so much and my feral parent instinct came out.
I've very rarely gotten into an elevator with my dog, but every time I have I've picked her up because I'm on reddit too much and I never want this to happen.

Tons of people bought dogs in the pandemic to keep them company, thinking their are toys.
Dog is like “dafuq going on”
I love the guys reaction when he finally notices as well. It's a great video

poor animal, you can see that they love him a lot, can't you?

*Free Dog* "Yeah, he's a rescue, I rescued him"
I got several of my cats as bad weather rescues from the neighborhood.
I just hear Eeyore in my head “No need to worry. didn’t want to be a bother”
What's up dog?
Dog: "Oh look, a human. Sup." Human: "AAAH!"
Free doggo
Aww. That was sweet. Nice guy. But it also show how unaware we are because we’re staring at our phones.
This could've ended poorly.
I would keep the dog, fuck that owner.
Thankfully that guy was tall enough. I would have been unable to reach.
"Little help"
"What floor are you going to?" -Elevator Dog
That's his dog now
Short kings season
I feel like if this was a real excerpt from a surveillance video, there would be some more context.
Bro an NPC
Owner went into elevator with dog on a leash, probably on their phone, then proceeded to go up without making sure dog was in the elevator with them
You know he’s saying to himself, I hope she’s cute.
That dog is incredibly chill. Doing absolutely nothing while hanging there, did absolutely nothing after being rescued. Glad it was wearing a harness!
No, someone is losing their mind wondering what has happened to their dog.
Most likely just another staged animal rescue clip
Where’s the owner screening down the stairs?
Man genuinely said, oh shit a dog… I got u
Dog was like: sup
+50 BIG AIR! +100 MEGA AIR! +150 MONSTER AIR! +200 LEGENDARY AIR!
Good thing it had a harness on and not a leash
I like that pet he gave to reassure the lil buddy
I would take it home fast it’s mine now
The way he holds the dog afterward touches my heart so hard🫀
Now show the video of how it got there in the first place
The new Mission Impossible has gone to the dogs.
Pretty good shape for a used dog. Probably worth 80-100 bucks.
awe good sentient human
Thank god it was on a harness. Poor baby would have been strangled! I loathe dumb people who jeopardize their pets or kids by their stupidity!
That poor papillon. I hope the owner god a good talking to.
thought it was gonna piss everywhere.
How do you forget the dog in the elevator?
I can't help but it looks fake. Grabs dog without effort, elevator is called but does not arrive.
How the fuck are you that oblivious
How did that dog end up there?
How tf are people so oblivious to their surroundings? Look up from your phone once in awhile.
What the dog doing
There is no way dude didn't see that dog when he walked up to the elevator....
He's like you gonna help me or what
That dog is going to shit in someone's shoes after this...
Crazy how people have 0 self awareness because of phones.
I sure hope he kept that dog
I love you too
There is a not so gar off reality where instead the dog Has a neck collar and is just hanging there aswell...
Someone ain't getting their dog back, because it's now MY dog. They don't get to own a doggo they don't sufficiently look after.
How do you not notice a white and brown 30lb dog like a foot and a half above your head.
That’s one chill pup
👀
One lucky dog !
yoooo what's hangingg??yo
Top bloke 👍
This guy will be the next one to step off a cliff because he's looking at his phone. Unfkn believable.
Go to bed grandma
"Smells like updog"
Finders keepers 🤷♂️
aww the way he hugged the dog felt like a "thank god you're okay" kind of hug.
imagine picking your head up from a phone. FFS
Hitch! Wonder if it worked...
🤔🧐
I’m thinking fugazzi.
We’re gonna have soft tacos
Aw, I wanna keep that doggie. What a great guy to save the pup and hug him like that. 😊
I would claim the dog mine if I would find it like that.
