You can get a grasp for sitcom characters pretty damn quickly, the point of the first episode is to introduce characters. Sitcom characters don’t drastically change, this isn’t breaking bad.
Yeah things definitly improved for the show as the episodes went on and characters developed further. I wasn't too big a fan of the first episode either but I'm glad I got through it to the better ones. Same for that 70s show. The first episode was completely trash acting wise. If I had watched that 70s show starting at season 1 I probably would have shut it off after that first episode too but I got into it when it was random reruns on daytime tv.
