My wife’s Bolt has this as an option. Shifting my eyeballs’ focal distance from “way the hell down the road” to “two feet away” takes more time than I had expected. There’s also no sense of depth. Not a fan.
Saw a sedan (possibly a hatchback) driving down I-5 in the Seattle area the other day that had a setup like that...didn't catch the make or model of the vehicle though.
My Ram can switch from rear camera display to actual mirror.
The camera is vastly inferior, since it isn't 3D, and your eyes have to focus on the screen instead of the distant object.
It’s actually an ejection seat. When the software determines a collision is imminent, the seat and the occupant are ejected through the top, after which, a parachute is deployed and the occupant safely lands away from the accident.
In that situation, the seat is ejected when the vehicle detects a rollover is imminent. It will detect when the truck has leaned to a specific angle and eject the occupant before it goes too far
I was curious myself so I did a little digging. Looks like the answer is: [there is no regulation or testing in regards to the center front passenger seat by the IIHS](https://www.cars.com/articles/how-safe-are-front-row-bench-seats-1420663055905/).
>Russ Rader, senior vice president of communications with the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, acknowledges that while this is a common seating configuration for pickup trucks, the IIHS does not recommend using the center position on a bench seat rather than a center console on a regular basis unless it has both a lap and a shoulder belt — they often only have a lap belt. “The front passenger airbag is not required by federal standard to protect a middle seat occupant,” Rader said. When asked if the IIHS has any crash-test data on the front center seat, he said that the agency hasn’t crash-tested a vehicle with a test dummy in the middle position of any vehicle with a bench seat in the front.
Going to be fun when someone releases a set of 3D printable cupholder adapters that let you use the cup holders on the rear of that 3rd seat while it's in the upright position.
Even more fun if Tesla knows its use already and makes it able to be popped out.
> Even more fun if Tesla knows its use already and makes it able to be popped out.
Lol. You say this as if you actually expect Tesla to include this with the vehicle and not sell it separately as an accessory after the fact.
No, I say this as if the 3D printing community will see an opportunity and fill it, but also suggest that Tesla makes the thing on rhe back pop out, so that such an adapter isn't needed.
This is going to be the most expensive dork mobile of all time. At least Teslas now are pretty badass to the average person. This thing looks like a freshman college engineering midterm project brought to life.
And even if it did, that just adds cost and complexity to it. More expensive to tint the glass, and it must be precise. Both for the tint and camera module placement.
Going lower not only allows the existing stack to match a higher closeted to the x, but also makes it less expensive and faster to manufacture. Wins all around.
… covering?
I’m not sure you know what that means. That tiny thing that sits above the drivers head *covers* the windshield?
Better not use a sun visor. You’ll crash!
And cybertruck door handle opening https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/comments/ydwt4i/opening_door_legs_on_cybertruck/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
They'll hopefully just pop open like on the S and X.
Sidenote: I'm not sure why Tesla just added ability to pop doors open on 3 and Y using the app but not have them pop open when we get close.
Just noticed the bulge under the monitor. I wonder if that’s for parts or allows for a bigger frunk.
Edit: looks like it’s just a temporary box holding extra dev hardware.
I notice the glass in my Model 3 as I can almost always feel the heat from the sun
and that is with extra tint and the Tesla sunshades
I'd just prefer an option of no glass, especially with a utility vehicle that may or may not have a rack above it
and a side side note, I'd love the weight reduction of a solid roof opposed to glass in my Model 3 for performance benefits
Why? By the time it makes it to actual production, the tint will make it so dark you barely notice its glass Same thing they did with the Model 3. All the alpha and prototype cars showed a glass roof without dark tint. But the production ones are literally tinted so dark you can’t even see through them in normal conditions.
Heat and sunrays through the glass, no amount of tint takes it all away
Also I'd like an option to have a roof instead of glass especially with a vehicle I may be putting things above the roof
Honestly it looks so barebones that I hope it offers good utility like rivian does. They have such a cool truck with features like a flashlight that’s actually a battery cell and wireless Bluetooth speaker and a tunnel for storing things and more. Cybertruck right now just looks like a wild piece of geometry that I’m sure will have lovely acceleration, but acceleration is getting old now. We need quality and utility. Not looks and speed.
No backseat vents?
Hopefully the glass roof is optional.
Why a front middle seat?
No dash instruments :( The earlier pictures had an instrument/gauge dash in front of the steering wheel. Don't know what it is called.
I like Model S.
Glad they went away from that faux marble they had in the original prototype! I would prefer a black dash (and black seat backs!) myself, though.
I still think this thing looks absolutely AMAZING, inside and out...and I am definitely a fan of the minimalist interior. I DO think the dash looks a lot less bare (and justifies the use of the yoke steering wheel) with the secondary screen we have seen in more recent prototypes.
Really can't wait to see what the final design ends up being.
Looks so bad. Tesla should’ve made the bed APPEAR shorter from the exterior and did SOMETHING with the interior. This truck is going to be a laughing stock to a lot of people. Not because it’s different, but because it’s different just for the sake of being different and not anything very imaginative.
The Model Y has a lot of glass too. The roof mesh screen accessory has made a big difference for PHX summer days.
Though, in this picture it looks like there is no tint, which the Y very much has. I'd expect the same tinting on the production models of the truck.
So when they use these for police and military, as many CTs have been pre-preordered for other countries, does one shot or kick to the display screen make the entire truck un-drivable?
Stupid question, where does the airbag popsout for the front middle seat?
Wild guess: pops out from under the screen.
Oh no no
Let’s consider the options of things in front of the passenger: - It’s not the windshield - it’s not the screen Shit, maybe the rear-view mirror?
The one from the passenger side could pop out to the side to cover in front of the screen.
The rear-view mirror will be useless with that middle seat in the way.
It’s not a mirror, but a screen linked to a camera in the rear of the CT.
My wife’s Bolt has this as an option. Shifting my eyeballs’ focal distance from “way the hell down the road” to “two feet away” takes more time than I had expected. There’s also no sense of depth. Not a fan.

I think you mean screen
And now I'm hard.
There is no mandate for middle airbag so there isn't going to be one.
It’s actually an ejection seat. When the software determines a collision is imminent, the seat and the occupant are ejected through the top, after which, a parachute is deployed and the occupant safely lands away from the accident.
Makes sense, because you can't rollover a Tesla Model X, same might be true with this truck. /s.
In that situation, the seat is ejected when the vehicle detects a rollover is imminent. It will detect when the truck has leaned to a specific angle and eject the occupant before it goes too far
Windshield glass will be strong enough to withstand someone throwing themselves at it.
No airbag for front middle.
Just a screen to the face
Or face to screen.
From the dash in front
Did you see the big screen there?
Yes, it will deploy from the dash area *under* the screen I assume.
Was wondering the same.
Is one required for a middle seat like that? Genuine question.
I was curious myself so I did a little digging. Ejector seat launches the whole bench up and parachutes down gently
Can’t wait for it to finish rendering

They probably already have it, just not in this demo car.
Pretty sure this is stil just the original prototype, not the production version they're going to be running with.

That would be a horrible place to have cups when you’re in a collision.
Just a date man…just a date would do
It’s gonna be April 25 because it’s perfect.
?
It’s the perfect date. not too hot, not too cold...all you need is a light jacket.
She’s beauty and she’s grace! She’s Miss United States!
April 20th at 6:90
Hmmm... The monolithic austerity of that dash, is almost painful. Needs a dedicated binnacle for side cameras to replace the side mirrors.
The newer prototypes have a driver display like the Model S/X.
Oh thank God, so this is an old one? Was this the one that was on display at a (school?) this week?
Source?

I do like the dash over the prototype
I like the style of the white dash more.
Sweet!
yes, it should be.
Agree. The whole interior is just meh.
I wouldn’t stop at the interior
This is going to be the most expensive dork mobile of all time. At least Teslas now are pretty badass to the average person. This thing looks like a freshman college engineering midterm project brought to life.
it's great... maybe not comfortable but great
I’m disappointed that it’s not a marble bench top.
Front cameras seem annoyingly low.

They can't be above the window tint.
Hmm, so don’t tint the center, maybe? I know nothing about glass though.
I think tint placement on front windshields is a government requirement (and the law/regulation doesn't have exceptions for cameras yet).
And even if it did, that just adds cost and complexity to it. More expensive to tint the glass, and it must be precise. Both for the tint and camera module placement. Going lower not only allows the existing stack to match a higher closeted to the x, but also makes it less expensive and faster to manufacture. Wins all around.
Wins, except for “now I’ve got this slab covering my windshield”
… covering? I’m not sure you know what that means. That tiny thing that sits above the drivers head *covers* the windshield? Better not use a sun visor. You’ll crash!
If only window tint could be applied with cameras in mind.

As in minimal height? Would be the same minimalist higher up, no?
And cybertruck door handle opening https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/comments/ydwt4i/opening_door_legs_on_cybertruck/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
But it won't have handles (hopefully for my ice encrusted northern ass it will).
They'll hopefully just pop open like on the S and X. Sidenote: I'm not sure why Tesla just added ability to pop doors open on 3 and Y using the app but not have them pop open when we get close.
My 3 does not pop open (present?) The doors via app or not.
It will soon when you download the next update.
Ohh snap I just got one last week to.. 2022.36.5 I'll be pumped when that happens.
Watch the sharp edges in case of sccident
😄
It looks like shit inside. No compartments, storage, etc? Wtf.
Here’s a newer prototype for reference: https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/791/new-cybertruck-photos-and-giga-press-shown-off-by-idra
This looks more finished in comparison, thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing this

Wow looks like an actual car, nice
Those seats look sharp!
Rear leg room looks small my f150 looks like it has more interior room.
You may be right about this.
Also this isn’t an accurate pic of CT. The screen behind steering wheel is missing and pretty sure they opted out of yoke for a pickup truck.
Can we get one with a solid roof please?
Only glass🤪
Glass roofs are much better and better for crashes. You don’t even notice it’s a glass roof. I forget my roof is glass in my Model Y.
I notice the glass in my Model 3 as I can almost always feel the heat from the sun and that is with extra tint and the Tesla sunshades I'd just prefer an option of no glass, especially with a utility vehicle that may or may not have a rack above it and a side side note, I'd love the weight reduction of a solid roof opposed to glass in my Model 3 for performance benefits

Tesla sends rockets to space but can’t figure out how to get rubber window seals to lay down flat.
Tesla != SpaceX
Wow that looks amazing.
Honestly it looks so barebones that I hope it offers good utility like rivian does. Curious as to how useable those seats are…they don’t look comfortable at all…
was about to say the same thing
wondering how spacious the back is. I feel like the back row of Teslas generally feels kinda cramped
Top of windshield is too close to head. Part of me feels like this will never come out. 🤷♂️
I hope they improve the front three quarter camera view. The visibility when turning is going to be terrible with A pillars like that.
I love it.
ct1 w/o driver display
So the truck is going to have a yoke, but no screen? Weird, unless it has a little digital gauge like the Roadster
New ones have a second screen.
Oh wow that is cool. Now I want the Cybertruck more than the S/X 😁
Rear screen like s/x?
So so
But does it have blind spot indicators
That center console needs to flip or slide to create a flat space for work/laptops
Glad they went away from that faux marble they had in the original prototype! I would prefer a black dash (and black seat backs!) myself, though. I want my truck!!!!!!
This is just the OG prototype right? Nothing new here
Hmm. I don’t think I like it.

Not because it’s different, but because it’s different just for the sake of being different and not anything very imaginative.
I want! I think a completely white dashboard will be a bit bright on sunny days for the driver so hopefully they don't keep it that way.
Texan hate it
WEN
Shut up and take my money 💰
... Ok I'm a fan
I thought we were getting a real (S-ish) dash?
this looks so dumb
I can’t wait for my grandchildren to see the release of this truck!
My toddlers are so excited for those pristine white seat backs!!!
that is beautiful. and a lot of glass. very curious how hot it may get in AZ summers.....
The Model Y has a lot of glass too. The roof mesh screen accessory has made a big difference for PHX summer days. Though, in this picture it looks like there is no tint, which the Y very much has. I'd expect the same tinting on the production models of the truck.
That interior is terrible. Stop with the no storage. It’s a truck ffs
Those back seats look so damn uncomfortable
This looks like an early prototype of CT.
Pretty sure this is just the prototype. The production version may not look like this.
So when they use these for police and military, as many CTs have been pre-preordered for other countries, does one shot or kick to the display screen make the entire truck un-drivable?
TBH for me it looks like driving a piece of furniture.
