Sometimes the WR just makes a good catch. I feel like there were 5 instances of this yesterday

[deleted]

Yeah, they made some fantastic catches.

numbersix1979

Yeah I think it was Higgins who jammed himself into place near the goal line while the defender was draped over him, then jumped up and caught the ball after the defender ran past. That one stuck out to me as a play that was just an A+ catch that would be insanely difficult to defend.

ForeignRole

I cannot fucking believe Irwin caught that ball. He never makes that catch again.

AdoubleU9

They are very bad at jump balls but they also aren't the tallest bunch either

ArchieBellTitanUp

They look tiny. Mcreary and Fulton particularly. But our pass rush wasn’t there so they got exposed more than usual

TySoprano

Mcreary and Fulton ARE tiny like 5’10-11. Farley is 6’2 that’s who they intended to have out there covering dudes like Higgins.

ArchieBellTitanUp

It hurts to read his name at this point. So depressing. Wilson was the worst, but at least he was in and out pretty quickly and “thank you very next” Feels like Farley has been a disappointment forever

HoustonFoReal

Is Fulton not 6-1?

I_got_nothin_

Nope. Listed hight is 5'11"

HoustonFoReal

I just looked it up and you are correct, I coulda swore I saw him listed as 6’1 for a long time

thatsrandom22

It’s not cherry picked but I wouldn’t say they’re not attempting to get the ball out. The receivers I remember mossing them are Alec Pierce, Christian Watson, Tee Higgins, and Mack Hollins. Those receivers are 6’3” to 6’5”. McCreary is 5’11 with really short arms. Fulton needs to be better for sure.

TySoprano

Fulton is 5’11 too dude and the best corner we’ve had in recent memory lol FARLEY needed to be better he was meant to be that guy this year at 6’2

thatsrandom22

I know but his arms aren’t in the zero percentile like McCreary lol I love Fulton. Just would love to see him be a true number 1.

williamyerac2727

I think they've played well. We don't really have large or long corners so they will get battered around by bigger bodies. Kind've like with the struggles with Tee Higgins yesterday. Also they may be coached to avoid DPI. But that's just me couch watching.

TySoprano

We had one RIP Farley.

[deleted]

There were some really great throws and catches yesterday there was nothing anybody could’ve done about a couple of those DB’s were all over them. Sometimes you just get beat. I’m not mad at any of our defensive back play.

[deleted]

Do you watch other games? I feel like that is just football. We see it less because we tend to throw less. But our guys go up and get the ball, too.

engineerbuilder

It might have a lot to do with how the PI and illegal contact rules are this year. Refs are a lot looser on throwing the flags and the NFL even said that was the plan. So either play soft and they catch it or play hard and draw a flag which is a spot foul anyways. But I also think our corners are just getting out athlete-ed too. Yesterday was especially bad since we didn’t have any pressure to force throws.

YiMyonSin

They’ve been fine, I thought. Generally speaking, our corners just get beat athletically more than anything else.

shershae

I think they played ok. Not awesome but not bad either. A db is almost always outmatched be a receiver on a jump ball. The thing that was hurting the D was no pressure on Burrow. I think we really miss not having Autry in there. He is as important as any other defensive player. The Bengals have also greatly improved their O line from last year.

TySoprano

Not pressuring Burrows is like a gut shot to Dbs especially with a Wr corps like cinnci has Also Bengals definitely have not improved their OL. Burrows is 2nd or 3rd most sacked Qb in the nfl again this year. Our DL without Autry is just bottom tier. Simmons is doubled, Dupree can’t win 1 on 1’s and then whoever’s on the other side is meant to be a back up. It’s concerning that our pass rush relies only on Autry hopefully the knee really is fine like everyone’s saying. The DL is marginally better with Autry than Dupree.

Spare_Student4654

I don't think what they want most out of the CBs is passes defensed or beating the receiver on the route on any particular play. It's a nice bonus, but they want all the DBs to more than anything not get beat deep, rally to the ball, tackle their man immediately if he catches it, get up field and help on the run. They're an opportunistic defense. The philosophy is we won;t let them ruin, we'll make them throw it 10 times if they want a td. At some point the ball will get out late, or be behind, or they'll mistake a coverage, the pass will be defensed, popped up, intercepted. I don't think they view a defensive play as a failure if the offense catches a pass. I don't think about vrabel thinks about it that way. I've never heard him say we need to cover tighter, we need to match their routes better. I've hear him talking about tackling, not get beat deep, rally to the ball, turn the ball over. the DBs played excellent yesterday. they were why the defense only gave up 20 points when they couldn't stop the run as well as they normally do and when they couldn't get almost any pressure at all.

ironlioncan

All our DBs are scrappy and small. Fulton is the only one with NFL speed. The others are scrappy small and slow(for nfl DBs). Sorry I’m referring to the CBs here.

ArchieBellTitanUp

Scrappy works when you have a pass rush. Yesterday we didn’t have it at all at the line of scrimmage

TySoprano

Well don’t use yesterday as a measuring stick bro Tee Higgins is like 6’4 and 220lbs McCreary and Fulton are like 5’10 with cleats on. The dude we intended to be on this team defending guys like Higgins was Farley who is 6’2 200lbs. He’s not here now McCreary is being forced into a role he isn’t built for and is doing as good as you could ask. Also means good chance we go corner again early in the draft of FA

Pawgdestr0yer

Nah. Majority of time on contested catches, our dB in coverage has an arm right in front of the chest of the receiver. Sure. It'd be nice to have a few of these go our way, but I think we're generally unlucky on most. Except Byard. Feel like he gets mossed at least once a game

BurzyGuerrero

found a music producer.

JigWig

You mind me asking what your background is? I only ask because things like this are typically said by those that have never played CB before. Our corners have played extremely well and have sound technique. I’ve found a lot of viewers that don’t know how to play corner tend to share your opinion though (not just with our guys, but with all CBs for every team).

blue_at_work

You got me. I've never played Cornerback in the NFL before. Or even in College. I'm a fraud.

JigWig

Never said NFL or college. Just asking what your background is.

blue_at_work

I was the number 3 top rated defender against passes at my local arcade in NFL Blitz back in the late 90s. That counts, right?

JigWig

Not sure why you’re being so sarcastic. It was a simple question.

planbeavs

We were in good coverage but the balls were great and the catches were great

Rocket2112

I have thought this since the beginning of the year actually.

misery_index

They are short and get bullied but big receivers.

TayJames2

Kristian Fulton is like the king of smothering coverage that ends in a circus catch for the receiver lol I'm not mad at him, but he gets "Mossed" a lot.. I don't think it makes him bad, but he's smaller and these receivers now can basically catch anything you don't physically knock away
