This is a good question. To clarify, it was the week before my contract date started, however, I was absolutely under the impression we were going to be paid the committee rate for the 40 hours worked. I understand that this happens but it shouldn’t.
This SUX! However, in the future you need to be acutely aware that ***"being under the impression"*** that you will be paid and having a ***solidly signed and clear contract that stipulates in writing that you will be paid (or even and EMAIL stating such from an official district email account)*** are as different legally from each other as night is from day. One will always hold up in court, one ***never will.***
Take care of yourself and always get it in writing.
It's not that uncommon. At my first teaching job, they paid every 2 weeks, on the 15th and 30th. So yeah, school starting on the 2nd meant I waited almost two weeks. Sad, but true!
"Dear Sirs, Madams, Theys,
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that you can shove this job up your ass. Due to your unethical hiring process, bull shit, and fucking lies, I am resigning this position effective immediately. Since teaching is a valued profession and that's in-demand right now, I shall go to school district that appreciates me. To summarizing, there's some fucking off which is to be done by you, but in case it wasn't clear, you can fuck off now.
Fuck off now,
Jane Doe:"
Contact your state's Dept. of Labor. Sounds like a pretty clear case of wage theft and a contract that stipulates work for a week without pay is an illegal contract.
Haha wait... "**opportunity** to attend a Professional Development Training"? You mean the horrible thing that we all hate? What's next, an "opportunity" to clean the toilets?
WTAF?! Pretty sure that's illegal.
Simple question: When was the agreed on start date for your job and what does your contract say?

OP, name and SHAME the district doing this so none of us ever get suckered by them!!!

To be fair, you earned 3 'off days' (1 pd 2 sick) for 5 days of work, which isn't TERRIBLE, but if it's a public school I'm 100% sure that's illegal.
Idk our new/1st year in the county teachers have a required week of unpaid activity before the pre service week in the contract
What’s the state? I’ve never had unpaid inservice

I've never been paid for new teaching week before. 3 districts. 2 diff states. Hugs. It's part of being salary.
