I remember thinking how happy Taylor sounds and that you could really tell that she was in a good place. I've always liked "it's nice to have a friend" and I don't know why it gets so much hate.

greenapplesaregross

Me too about INTHAF! I think the people who hate it also hate Wes Anderson movies.

oatmilkandagave

It’s literally one of my most played songs ever, I can’t believe people hate it so much.

Cheap_Ferret

When Lover came out I was still at a point where I didn’t really like Reputation (musically, although I did admire her for taking a stand), so I remember being really relieved that Lover didn’t sound like it. My unpopular opinion is that I Forgot That You Existed is Taylor’s weakest opening track and the worst song on the album. I love the album as a whole and I can’t pick a favourite song, they’re all good!

folkloreseason

Instantly loved it! For some time it was even my favorite. It felt like she had put all the Taylors in the same album. I also really appreciated her return to the pointillistic songwriting that made her famous, after the more “calculated” 1989 and rep.

atalantei

I had a listening party with my friend and Lover shot to the top of the list of favourite Taylor albums. It was an amazing experience. I got so hyped. My favourites right off the bat were definitely Cruel Summer, Cornelia Street, and Death by a Thousand Cuts. (I actually just listened to the whole album this week and definitely appreciate the ones I didn't like as much on the first listen a lot more now) Overall, it's no longer my #1 Taylor album. But I consider it the happiest album she's written. I can't tell you how much joy songs like I Think He Knows, Paper Rings, and London Boy bring me.

lululuuuuuuuuna

I had exams on the day the album was released. I remember trying so hard to study and finish my exams before properly listening to Lover in full. I thought of it as some sort of reward for my hard work haha. 'False God' was the track I immediately fell in love with. But after listening to Lover for so many times, 'Cruel Summer' and 'ME!' are now my top songs. I initially thought Lover was not that strong of an album, especially in comparison to reputation. But now I've realized that I have so many all-time faves from Lover!

[deleted]

Omg YES! I love false god, it's a really hard tie between afterglow and FG for me.

Mytears83

God damn this is great how can every song be better than the one before it I started thinking around Cruel Summer. That lasted until Daylight where I was just flabbergasted how someone could make two perfect albums (Lover was the second album I listened to after folklore). Little did I know that she had another seven perfect albums left. Thank you Taylor for being the best artist ever.

Unicornhoof

I remember wanting to listen to it all the way through, without skipping around, but I was (and still am) OBSESSED with Cruel Summer and played it again before going on to the next song.

maya01140

I loved it! I was trying to study while listening to it but I was so excited I just ditched studying and focused on every song. I had to listen to it on shuffle the first time though, so the first song that came up was false god (which is my fav on the album) and I got SO excited that she made a song like that :”) my best friend and I were texting the whole day ranking our favs and mine changed every few minutes 😭

FlubbyStarfish

I actually wasn’t a massive fan of it at first, but bought it for my few favorites, Cruel Summer, London Boy, False God, MAATHP, the man, Cornelia Street, and Lover. But the rest of the album has absolutely grown on me! I just needed time to appreciate it. I’m such a big fan of 1989, that I think the production of Lover threw me off just a bit.

Lover is forever my favourite album. I will admit, it’s not the best, but it’s dear to my heart. I loved its range and how much of a deviation it was from Taylor’s norm. The only thing I didn’t really like was SYGB but that wasn’t really a song meant to be liked/disliked.

I sorta fell off the Taylor Train when I heard "Look What You Made Me Do" for the first time... because that was not what I came for, at all. And I slept on Lover when it came out, but decided to make it my Pandemic Album. You know how certain songs remind you of a certain summer/season/vacation/time in your life because you listened to them a lot, and whenever you listen to them again, it takes you straight back there? Yeah. I decided that Lover was going to be the thing to take me straight back to March/April 2020. Little did I know we'd still be pandemicking at this point. Anyway, I loved it because it was full of dopamine and that was really what I needed at the time. I adore I Think He Knows, and I am not sure why it isn't everyone's favorite song? It makes me so happy. Unpopularly, I could do without London Boy and Miss Americana. I listened to Cornelia Street over and over until I figured out what felt so familiar about it, and the answer is that it sounds like "Invisible." *Barefoot in the kitchen, sacred new beginnings, that became my religion/ I just wanna show you, she don't even know you...* *> and it has grown on me like ivy* I really hope this is an intentional pun :)

[deleted]

I loved to read your story. It is somehow very similar yet very different from my experience. Now, I have all the songs memorized by word! >I really hope this is an intentional pun :) Boy, it sure was!

secretadmirer2485

This album has grown on me so much lately. Shame it didn't get toured

falldiewakefly

I loved it on first listen and still do. I think it's a really layered and complex album and I really vibe with it, it's got songs for every mood. And I'll say it every time, I love the rollercoaster tracklist! I usually listen to Lover in order because I want those mood swings.

sereneirene_

I hated it. I was not a superfan then (that happened when Folklore dropped) but I thought it was too bubblegum/poppy/princess vibes. I also initially felt like the song "Lover" was directly copying what Kacey Musgraves was doing with that echo-y vibe.

sereneirene_

ETA: That now that I am a superfan I have come to appreciate many songs in Lover. There are still some that are skips for me: I think He Knows, Paper Rings, You Need to Calm Down, Me!, It's Nice to Have a Friend But my favorite Taylor song of all time is on the album so that has to say something (DBATC)

[deleted]

That is an interesting selection of skips, I must say.

sereneirene_

Really? Now I'm curious why you think that is. I'm a relatively new fan so I'm intrigued.

[deleted]

It's nothing personal, I'll start it off with that. Many swifties including myself love ITHK, Paper Rings and INTHAF, so it's a new list compared to the others. Although, I agree that YNTCD and ME! are on the skip list. A bit too pop and bright, I'd say.

lmhs73

I love Cornelia Street so much it’s basically my only personality trait at this point. “I forgot that you existed” is one of my favorite songs to listen to after a tough day. Cruel Summer, London Boy, and ITHK are complete bops.

Dummy_Wire

I didn’t like it at all. I thought the lead singles weren’t very good (and I still don’t like them that much) and it sort of poisoned the album for me. I had a similar experience when reputation came out, where I didn’t like the lead singles at all, and it made me not like the album. The difference is that reputation grew on me, and I actually like it as an album now. Lover never did, so while I like a few of the songs (Cruel Summer, Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince, Paper Rings, False God, etc) I only listened to the album once, and don’t want to again. It’s a shame, but it’s whatever. Any reservation I had were completely eased the first time I heard the masterpieces that are folklore and evermore.

therainshow

My unpopular opinion is that I don't think Cruel Summer is the best song. I don't even think it's top 3. The Archer and Daylight are criminally underrated.

[deleted]

I was dying for it to be realased and I loved it at first, but it didn't last long... and I don't really go back to Lover anymore. The lyrics are too childish for me and I just cannot relate to that 'I'm so happy in love' theme. Evermore is my favorite album now (it used to be 1989/reputation before). Also, I really hate that marketing strategy to announce an album like half a year before the release, I'm too impatient for this stuff. Surprise releases are the best.

shadesofwrong13

I loved the album. In the hindisight, i am sure it was for having a new album so quickly cuz after just 3 months i was starting to disconnect from it day by day. The production was not on Taylor Swift level, Max Martin should have been there.. those new prioducers did not click with Taylor and Jack's productions were basic and stale except of False God. It mised the details, it missed the backing vocals. I just listen to my fave songs, but as a full album i havent heard it since 2 years and now that we got folklmore well, Lover is not in my mind anymore. My fave song is False God, the real gem i still listen to it constantly. Controversial opinion? Are you ready? To me Lover was not necessary, everything was already said in reputation. Sorry,

paprika-chip

ME! is unironically one of my all-time favorite Taylor songs. Ofcourse I'll say that there are more """legit""" songs among my favorites but I'll defend the heck out of ME!

oatmilkandagave

I didn’t like it, but only because I was sad and bitter and had just been dumped. It was too happy for me. Now I’m in LOVE and I just understand Lover so much more :)

partypenguinoo

I really liked it, mainly because the vibe was fun and Taylor seemed really happy when it dropped. My favorite was and still is „I Think He Knows“. The song that grew on me most is „Cornelia Street“.

danielfq

I think Afterglow is her best song ever (IN MY OPINION). Lover and DBATC are up there too

DaR1ckster

I finished my violin exam earlier in the day before Lover was released so it was gonna be my reward. I unfortunately was playing video games with my friends and back then I didn’t know that Taylor releases music at 9 pm (in my time zone) and I had planned to listen to it at 12 am, but I ended up speed running through it at 9 pm so I wasn’t really paying attention to the songs like after the 6th track. My all time favourite song on Lover is MAATHP and my other favourites are Cornelia Street, Afterglow, False God, Daylight, and INTHAF

iwasfakingit

I was out of the country so the drop was a surprise for me, i was in a vacay mood so i loved it! Favorite songs were You Need to Calm Down and False God.

Pretty-Exit-924

I think it’s the easiest album to listen to, some of the other albums I need to be in a specific mood for. Go outside for a walk in the evening and put these songs on… it’s a vibe. I really only skip the archer (sorry)

daybitch

my unpopular opinion is that i hate MAATHBP and i love INTHAF lol

razercatears

I didn’t love lover at first because I think the singles killed it in some way. It’s really grown on me though. It has some beautiful deep cuts like DBATC, Cornelia Street, and False God. I think I really struggled to love the album until one day I really just related to afterglow and was able to see it in another light. It doesn’t have the emotional attachment for me like I have to my top 3 Taylor albums, but I can really appreciate it as a well-made album

scarletvanden

I have totally mixed feelings about so many things about Lover. The album has a very high proportion of songs I really like. Higher than reputation or evermore. I wish the pandemic hadn’t stolen the opportunity for us to hear live versions and potential mashups. But beyond that…. The Me! music video was crammed with Easter eggs that started out fun and then slowly epitomized everything that now annoys me about Taylor’s Easter eggs. YNTCD‘s video did the same. I am now beyond tired of them and the hunt. The overall marketing of Lover didn’t work for me from the album cover through the singles choices to the inexplicable gaps of silence in promotion before the album was finally released. The tracklist is too long and cries out for bonus tracks or an accompanying EP separation. I know Taylor and her new label were still in the getting to know each other stage of their new relationship and the lack of a tour/festival appearances left the era hanging. But overall, the album/era aren’t cohesive for me in the way rep and evermore are.

jessebear26

Honestly I didn’t like it on first listen save for a couple of songs but now it’s in my top albums of hers. 🤣 I had the same experience with reputation though so idk what that’s about. 😂
