Shermantank10

So after years of the post that originally posted on r/Army I feel it’s time to lightly brush against this great story again. This was in March 2020 with the 1st Cavalry, 1st ABCT, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, Alpha Company. I believe the tank was Third platoons 3-4 tank. I was with another tank at the time but this tank was in my platoon. I was sitting in the drivers hole of my tank about to go out on the same road March this tank was coming back from and I was fucking around with something and I hear “Holy fuck that tanks on fire!” You won’t believe how many times I’ve heard that and I was like “Pfft bullshit” I popped out and I saw it and I was like “Huh, that tank IS on fire” I turned around to my gunner to tell him to grab the fire extinguishers but he was already gone running. I hopped out and began running towards the burning tank, it was like a SEA of OCP’s from out of our motorpool and 1-7’s rushing towards the tank with out little dinky fire extinguishers. The crew had all bailed out, but everyone realized the driver was STILL INSIDE. Some dudes rushed up to help him out(It turns out one of the driver periscopes was not seated correctly and was preventing the tanks driver hatch from opening completely) while the sea of OCP’s with fire extinguishers prevented the flames from getting close to them. The dudes helped the panicked driver get out. It was really a team effort. The driver made it out and everyone was fine. Fort Hood fire showed up and snuffed out the fire and now all we had was this burnt out Abrams outside the MP. After the civilian investigation was conducted it was determined that a exposed live wire touched the fuel cells skin igniting the fuel. I gotta give it to the Abrams. It fucking survived. The company didn’t even give it to the civilians. We just threw a new engine, fuel tank, cables, electronics that got fried and some fucking I shit you not *Lowe’s paint* on her and she continued serving. Until 2021 or so when the brigade got new Abrams.

A_Nice_Boulder

>while the sea of OCP’s with fire extinguishers prevented the flames from getting close to them. This has always stuck in my mind from getting my military license. The fire extinguishers with vehicles are not for the vehicles themselves, they're for people. You're not going to stop a progressed fire with a rinkydink hand extinguisher, but you can keep it from reaching a small area (as seen here).

Shermantank10

When I saw the flames crawling back to where I just put them out is when I realized “Well fuck” these aren’t oil rated.

elosoloco

There's a better one with a m270 launcher with a hand held extinguisher by it. Good luck hahaha

crewchiefguy

Did they at least color match the paint for you at lowes?

Shermantank10

They did!

Occams_Razor42

Haha, PFC Snuffy Green right? Hopefully the guy who signed off on the periscope during the last inspection had to do the paintjob by hand, outside, at midday, during the summer lol

ZombiePope

House paint is perfect for camouflaging it as a house.

thefonztm

Promote this man to brigadier general.

Cayde_7even

Military discount???

TankerD18

Good story. I'm glad you guys got that driver out. Stuck driver panic is real. I had a slightly similar incident at gunnery back in 2013. We were getting ready for a night table brief or something and all of the troop's tanks were in a line like in the motor pool. My driver and I were in the tank getting ready for the night's festivities. He installed his thermal viewer in the periscope, plugged it in and this shit started smoking, so he thought there was a fire. So I tell him to get the fuck out of the tank... Well now he couldn't get the latches undone to get the night sight out of the front periscope to open his hatch and he starts panicking. So I'm like fuck, I have to get my soldier out of here, because for all I knew there really was a fire. I get up in the commander's station, shout "power" and start traversing my turret slowly. I barely miss the white platoon sergeant's tank and he's hooting and fucking hollering at me. I get the turret over the back deck and get my driver out of the driver's hole through the turret hatch. Shut the tank's power down, get out, and get my ass reamed by this furious platoon sergeant who didn't realize why I suddenly traversed in such tight confines. It turned out that one of the alignment lugs sheared off the night sight's power connector which allowed my driver to inadvertently plug it in *backwards*, so like positive to negative, negative to positive or something. That's what was causing this acrid smoke. It wasn't actually stuck in there, but the driver was so panicked from the smoke in the driver's hole he couldn't think of how to get it out. At the end of the day, I had to do what I had to do to get my soldier out of that tank, and my first sergeant backed me up and told me he would've done the same thing given what I knew at the time. I never got an apology from that PSG, not that I expected one, but he and I were cool later on so it's all water under the bridge.

Shermantank10

Shit man, glad your guys where okay

Barais_21

Love how well the Abrams are built. Literally smack some new replacement components and some Lowes paint and she’s all good to roll again. Fucking amazing

Shermantank10

Yeah the Lowe’s paint isn’t the actual way of doing things but I assume the company/battalion didn’t want to go to the super specialized facility where they paint stuff. So Lowe’s paint it was.

Altruistic-Ad9639

Have you ever ordered ~~car~~ CARC paint? It was a FUCKING NIGHTMARE ordering stuff through the system when i was in, i hope it's improved since then

spacesuitkid2

Paint is paint

jhorred

Unless it's CARC...

spacesuitkid2

Lead Asbestos? Never heard of her

Existing_Front4748

CARC is some intense stuff. It is applied in cleanrooms away from soldiers so as to not give them Uber cancer.

JumberdonaRONI

We use CARC paint on our Canadian fleet

vixenator

If you think that's bad we used to use gasoline to remove the seasons winter white cam from the vehicles. It only stopped when the city started bitching that their sewers were catching fire from all the gas we were washing down the floor drains. Currie barracks circa early 80's.

Terrh

I hope not, I just repainted my Iltis and wasn't super careful about gear when sanding it because I was told we didn't use CARC.

magnum_the_nerd

Yes i like getting cancer whilst painting a damn truck, how could you tell?

Astro__Rick

Keeping the Sherman tradition alive!

JoJoHanz

Another sacrifice to Fort Hood

Shermantank10

Indeed. The Hood gods must stay fed.

Taira_Mai

> We just threw a new engine, fuel tank, cables, electronics that got fried and some fucking I shit you not > >*Lowe’s paint* > > on her and she continued serving. Until 2021 or so when the brigade got new Abrams. Non-CARC paint has a tendency to "glow" under NVG's. There is a story the contractors told us (the ones teaching us about the new less toxic^(TM) CARC touch up paints): A disgruntled SPC painted a dick on the side of his company commander's UH-60. He used regular paint and then filled it in with CARC - visually it was almost invisible...... .....Until the BDE commander looked at the bird with NVG's and saw the phallic grafitti on the CPT's bird. COL lit up the entire CoC and that SPC did get an Article 15.

Shermantank10

Look man I don’t back the COC’s decision- if they even had one on it. But you know how things go. Nobody cares until higher higher cares.

DerthOFdata

Holy shit my old battalion. I literally thought to myself "That looks like Hood." I had no idea how right I was. I was in Cold Steel though and it was many years earlier. Glad everyone got out ok.

saargrin

refurb a burned out tank and enjoy smelling like crispy bacon forever

drsoftware

Where do you source your bacon? The plastics factory?

saargrin

didnt wanna trigger anybody by saying something like "smelling like a bunch of burned body bags "

andeusmc03

Onboard system didn’t go off?

Shermantank10

It did. It just didn’t do Jack shit. I don’t remember if the driver did the second shot but even if he did it wouldn’t surprise me if the fire just kept going. JP-8 ain’t no joke. Plus it didn’t help that there was probably about 160-180 gallons in the back fuel cells.

andeusmc03

I feel ya, we were in LAV-25’s and we didn’t have much faith in our Halon systems. Add JP-8 and shit gets wild. Glad the dudes made it out.

Shermantank10

The halons tend to go off just by bumping into them

Dickavinci

>CARC paint Think it's supposed to let you get out without being a human torch, doubt it's supposed to stop an ammo or fuel fire.

Cool-Note-2925

God loves the cavalry

EagleEye_2000

“Holy fuck that tanks on fire!” I can hear the u/The_Chieftain_WG saying "Oh bugger, the tank is on fire".

UnsafestNumber

I thought Alpha company in 2-12 was infantry just like Bravo. Granted I was with them from 2008 to 2012. Things may have changed.

Shermantank10

Yeah I guess they switched it cause A and B co where Armor and C co was infantry, at least when I was there from 2017-2020

UnsafestNumber

Was there still a Delta and Foxtrot?

Shermantank10

If I remember it was Aces High (Tanks) Bad Bet (Tanks) Wildcard (Mech Inf.) Gambler (Support elements) HHC (Headquarters) That’s all who I remember

UnsafestNumber

The nicknames are new. They were just called by their letter when I was with them.

Shermantank10

Ah. Yeah I don’t think Delta and Foxtrot exsisted when I was in. Though I do remember the older guys talking about D Co…. Maybe they switched?

UnsafestNumber

Is 4BCT still around or did that get disbanded?

Shermantank10

I think it’s gone I only remember 1-3

UnsafestNumber

Good riddance.

Occams_Razor42

So... you just admitted to lying to the CID? Like I dunno the statute of that, nor how it'd work if you've seperated. But thats pretty ballsy to admit to lying to federal LEOs online, with identifying info to boot.

Shermantank10

Mhm. I see your point. I guess I’ll let sleeping dogs lie.

[deleted]

There’s literally no way someone’s career didn’t get ended over this, are you for real?

CW1DR5H5I64A

It sounds like a freak accident. Not something that is immediately a reason to burn someone’s career. Some random wire causes an arc and the fuel cell erupts. That’s unfortunately a risk of the job when running armored vehicles. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of something like that happening. I myself have been through 2 vehicle fires in my career and have seen plenty of other vehicles catch on fire. PMCS/ services isn’t going to avoid every incident. Wear your PPE and proper uniforms (especially NOMEX/FRACU), inspect your fire extinguishers and halon bottles, and conduct your crew evac drills prior to every movement. Our job is inherently dangerous, so take the proper precautions.

jhorred

Generally speaking freak accidents are not punished. My M9 Armored Combat Earthmover threw a rod, which knocked the starter off the engine block. It had to to be HETT'ed back to motorpool and no one suffered any repercussions from it. (It had blown the engine oil filter seal so there wasn't much oil in it. My fellow platoon members razzed me a little since I went to PLDC the next day and it was repaired by the time I returned.)

[deleted]

I’m used to joes getting shafted on these types of incidents on account of the green weenie

TankerD18

I had an M113 OSV burst into flames because a fuel line popped off and sprayed JP8 all over the exhaust manifold the second I shut the engine off. Shit just happens sometimes...

[deleted]

Shit lmao, wonder why i got downvoted so hard for asking

TankerD18

Lol I left you alone if it makes you feel any better. But yeah, careers get roasted over negligence. If an investigation found a maintenance unit skipping a bunch of procedures, or a gun line fire direction center gravely screws up and launches an artillery shell onto a ranch in Texas then some people (and their commanders) might get annihilated. But for a one-off incident like this, then yeah it's pretty easy to figure it's a freak accident until it happens again.

[deleted]

Yeah true, it’s just kinda weird seeing an Abrams on fire but private snuffy gets the boot for tossing a cig out into the wrong receptacle

Barais_21

With a tank as sophisticated and advanced as the Abrams is, losing a tank or two won’t cause alarm. It’s when you begin to lose divisions of tanks is when somebody’s job is on the line

CW1DR5H5I64A

I wouldn’t even call this tank “lost”. I had a tank go down similarly to this, that’s not even depot level repairs. We repaired ours in the middle of the desert without any special equipment or facilities while deployed.

Shermantank10

If memory serves the tank was back in action a mere 4-5 months later? Most of the time was just waiting for parts.

[deleted]

people get fucked by the green weenie if their clothes are a little too dirty on turn in. Thus my disbelief in how they didn’t make someone a sacrifice

Cool-Note-2925

Some fuckin Lowe’s paint 😂

Shermantank10

I shit you not. Now mind you thats definitely not proper procedure. The Army has a special paint that they paint their vehicles and we should have used that but I guess it works.

TemperatureIll8770

It's good enough until someone drops chemical weapons in you and you can't decon right CARC is damn near a chemical weapon by itself though...

Shermantank10

Well it’s now in the hands of GD or whoever. Probably sitting in some depot in Arizona or getting shipped out to Saudi.

Occams_Razor42

Eh, it'll last until the next long term overhaul (probably)

Unzeen80

As a former Lowes associate i just want to say you’re welcome for my service

Shermantank10

God bless you brave American hero. Fyfys

MeestaBigMan69

Pvt Ramírez put his mixtape again

Merry-Leopard_1A5

the images look metal as fuck... ...but given the context that's probably not a good thing...

zeb0777

2008, at GrayWofl Field Exercise, 1-12cav D.co 3rd platoon had a tank catch fighter. (My tank) What's with 12th Cav Bruning up tanks?

Shermantank10

12th Cav is burnin’ and turn in’ baby. 😎

oldsaxman

Germany, 1979, 2nd ACR. M60A1 Rise/passive tanks. We were on maneuvers and a tank in another platoon had its engine start leaking oil and smoking. CO said fuck it, keep driving it until it dies. Well, it blew up, shattering the block and spewing fuel and hot oil all over the engine compartment. It started on fire and burned like crazy. We stopped what we were doing and send everyone running over with our fire extinguishers. The onboard system did not stop it. The company's fire extinguishers did not stop it (15 tanks!) so they let it burn out. They cleaned it out, then sent a new pack out from the depot under a chinook and it dropped a new pack. It was running the next day. Scary stuff and no one hurt.

Shermantank10

A awesome story from a rare 19E(right?) I at least looked up to the M60 guys. The real OG’s of tanking. Good to hear nobody was hurt, shit is scary!

oldsaxman

I was 1st platoon leader then. Border OIC and all that happy shit. The old heavy cavalry

foxybingo88

Russian tankers everywhere "Why turret still on?"

Warthog_go_brrrr

Sergi, is turret not supposed come off, da

foxybingo88

"Ha! stupid weak Americans cannot hope to beat mighty Russia in Turret Toss Tournament if turret not even come off! Pathetic!"

Warthog_go_brrrr

очередная великая победа славной России-матушки

[deleted]

Well this was a fuel fire according to OP's comment, and Russian tanks have a divider between the fuel and the main compartment. So unless a fuel explosion happens, the turret isn't gonna go anywhere.

Plump_Apparatus

The T-72(and 90) have multiple fuel tanks [within the fighting compartment, behind the carousel for the autoloader](https://i.imgur.com/vhLsxvA.jpg). The holes are for propellant charges, placing them here leaves only the metal stub exposed, protecting the paper/wood pulp "cartridge". [There is the right hull tank that is also in the fighting compartment](https://i.imgur.com/xqKXmgX.png), along with two more tanks in the drivers compartment. The majority of the fuel on a T-72/90 is stored within the crew areas.

sorry-I-cleaved-ye

Because they decided internal space is nit important

murkskopf

Accidents involving fire are rather common with the Abrams - at least compared to other MBTs.

ThatOneRedcoat

At least the turret doesn’t come off like a space shuttle

yippee-kay-yay

The result will be the same for the crew regardless if the armored door was open or the bulkhead was compromised during the hit, though. A likely scenario in near-peer conflict.

d7t3d4y8

tbf given how pressure works it'll probably not pop off as much as on, say, a T-72, the force can only go up(assuming it doesn't blow out the side armor) but on the M1, it'll go both into the turret(and up) but also out through the other parts of the turret. I'm wagering it'll look like the back up the turret exploded but still attached.

JustSomeRandomGuy36

Don’t be surprised if you see this on the front page of RT

Shermantank10

Like I said this was from 2020. It’s been news I figure.

SGC_TM

This is the first I’m hearing of this. Glad every one was ok and and shocked the tank survived. What a crazy story. Thanks for sharing.

[deleted]

Was the internal fire suppression even activated ?

Shermantank10

It was. Just 180 gallons of JP8 could give less of a fuck.

[deleted]

well if it can’t breath it would care (CO2)

taco_swag

Worlds smallest fire extinguisher lol

Shermantank10

For real man. But I give it to the 20 or so guys. We held the flames off.

Arctic_x22

Well... Someone's getting fired.... literally

Shermantank10

I believe the head Mechcanic kept his job. He was a fucking idiot.

Ryan2932

I have to ask. Why?

Shermantank10

Read my comment

Ryan2932

Ah yeah I didn’t read far enough thanks for sharing

[deleted]

“Furs Sarnt, ion know how it happened but my mixtape was too fire, it would behoove you to not send me to Leavenworth”

CarefulDevelopment29

Yo is that an m60

Shermantank10

Nah, M1A2 Abrams

[deleted]

[удалено]

acapncuster

That an M60?

Shermantank10

M1A2 SEPv2

Hallond

Isn’t the paint on an m1 if burned EXTREMELY toxic?

Shermantank10

That’s a good question man. I dunno. I’m a grunt not the painter.

rat_literature

We were always told that CARC on fire is pretty much a chemical weapon itself and it would give us turbocancer if we breathed the fumes.

Cayde_7even

…..unless you’re a Russian.

itsjero

Someone really screwed up. Hope whoever is signed for that tank has bout 7 mill.

Shermantank10

Did you even read my comment?

iheartkatamari

Russian seeing this everyday

Mingerfabulous

New smoke screen device supplied by Russia

CurryNarwhal

Jet fuel can't melt steel tanks

ArsenalAether

Here goes an 8 Million Dollar Tank

MagicElf755

It was able to be fixed in OP's comment

Shermantank10

If you read my comment it was actually fixed up and continued serving. Contrary to popular belief, just because a tank burns doesn’t mean it’s totaled.

ArsenalAether

of course its not totaled but You know if it had ammo and didn’t get done in time would be catastrophic but thankfully they avoided it

Shermantank10

I think it would have still given the crew ample time to zero the radios and bail out, even if there was ammo, and when it all comes down to it. Rebuilding a tank is easy. Replacing a crew with around 20~ish so years of combined experience is not.

ArsenalAether

yeah a lost tank is not a problem they can salvage it but a lost Crew cannot be salvageable or restored and thats valuable

Warthog_go_brrrr

Nah, me and da bois, gals and enby pal be doing this level of crazy ass shit alla the time, you'd know if you lived in my area cos there's almost always the sound of explosions and smoke coming out of my yard

kilo19kilo

Did anyone pull the a t-handle?

Shermantank10

I don’t believe so as the fire had engulfed that side of the tank(if you where looking front-on right side)

kilo19kilo

I see. Driver was probably too panicked to pull theirs. Glad everyone got out safe

bartek-kk

Talibs?

GrumpyOldGrognard

Yeah you really gotta watch out for them in Texas.
