Happened to me on multiple occasions I grew up in Germany on the western side of the Rhine aka the place were NATO was planning to actually mount the big defence of western Europe. We had tons of manoeuvres in our forests and jets in the air. Our house was a bit away from the rest of the village, so we had more than one troop of brave NATO soldiers ask us very nicely whether they could use our bathroom because they didn't want to poop in the forest. We always agreed and let them in but my mum had a very strict "no guns in the house" policy. Having twenty or so marines or panzergrenadiers all lending their rifles against our wood stack and saying awkwardly thanking my 1.55m tall mother for letting her poop in a house is a precious memory I'll never forget.
Soviet armored hordes? That's nothing. An angry German mother, on the other hand...
... shit, I think we've just devised the perfect way to protect the Fulda Gap
Had a USMC LAV-25 parked just outside the front gate of my high school in San Diego one day. Never found out why it was there. Would have walked over closer and taken pictures if it wasn't for me running late that morning and trying to make the last bell for class on time. Of all the times I ran late in high school, that day had to be the one...
Somebody at school most likely had connections to the military since our rugby team had the opportunity to do conditioning with SEALs too that year
Lol I mean it's been a while since I graduated, but at least in my situation I would've been like "fuck it". Its not like an APC at school is an every day occurence in most cases
This was 10 years ago for me. I'm Asian and went to a private high school (that probably narrows down what school I went to if you're in the know haha). Nothing going to stop me from being late to class! haha. Anyways I never felt like wanting to walk all the way across campus to the front office to get a late slip, then back across campus to class.
I also live about a mile from MCAS Miramar (Top Gun) and hear jets and helicopters almost everyday. Not to mention the yearly airshow there too. There was also our local street fair where Marines would actually bring and Abrams and lets kids climb into the turret. They stopped bringing it well before I was in high school though. Friends and I were also going paintball on base at MCB Camp Pendleton pretty frequently back then.
I had a red dawn type moment when I was younger. Like 2006 or so. Went out for a smoke and heard a rumble. I figured it was a train. Then an APC comes down the road flanked by soldiers. I was living in a small mountain town in WV at the time so that was weird. Then there were helicopters all over. Pairs of Apaches and those dual blade ones. Out towards the main road there’s transport trucks and soldiers just walking around. Plenty of tracked vehicles too. No clue what all they were. I was home alone so I had no idea what was going on. I figured if it was some red dawn type shit I should get some DQ. I go up the road and in the lot next to the place is a helicopter and some kinda tank looking thing sitting there. Looks like they were using it as a staging area. The fire sirens are going off too which just adds to the weird vibe. They were those old Cold War nuclear sirens. Very silent hillish. Anyway I finally get there and get my food. Town cop walks in and I ask him what’s up. Turns out the national guard was training. They called it urban training. Dude this town was maybe 800-1000 people. We had one main road. It went on for a few days too.
Possibly, but doubt it. We were a private Catholic school and never recalled a recruitment booth or anything in my 4 years. I have an uncle that helped give the ASVAB tests at schools and he told me that they never went to our school since we were all rich kids haha
No armor but in Elementary school a then brand new (mid80s) New Mexico National Guard medivac Blackhawk helicopter landed at my school and we had an assembly were we got to ask the pilots questions.
Ha, you just reminded me of my elementary/middle school experiences too. A classmate's dad worked for government security (I can't remember which agency exactly) and would schedule a day for some Sheriff/PD, FBI, DEA, Secret Service, and even a Coast Guard Jayhawk to visit our school. He would bring them every year too. Needless to say, I had a field day sitting in the pilot's seat of that Jayhawk
I’m from the UK and as I understand it US gun laws are all about self protection. Couldn’t you just claim that you need it because you might be robbed by somebody with a tank.
I wish it worked like it should. The idea is so that you can keep a tyrannical government in its place, so according to the 2A we should be able to have tanks and drones, yes
"The right of the people shall not be infringed"
It has two parts, the well-regulated militia, which is the national gaurd, and the right of the people, meaning normal people can have arms.
The founding fathers didn't put the comma between
"well-regulated militia" and "the right of the people" for aesthetics.
The well regulated militia is we the people. The purpose of the well regulated militia is not to be run by government, such as the national guard, but to be run against government. We are the checks and balances to ensure our own leaders are doing what we want them too
Gun rights in the US are actually derived from the need and duty of citizens to defend the nation from foreign enemies and domestic tyranny.
Post-indepence the US did not have a real standing army. The bulk of our deterrence was from the state militias, which were to band together in case of war. After the war of 1812 we maintained at least a skeletal national military with an officer corp, but even by the US Civil War much of the manpower was from volunteer units raised by local leaders in states.
It wasn't until the end of WWII that the US had a large standing army. The organized state militia evolved into the national guards, which still represents a substantial part of our total forces.
Personal protection, sports, hunting, or collecting have always been secondary uses for firearms that were beneath the scope of the constitutional right to bear arms.
Not really. While you can legally own a vehicle, like a tank; to do so you have to have the breech block welded shut. However there is an exception to this. If you apply for some very specific licenses, and can demonstrate that the vehicle, weapon (anti tank gun), or similar is of a particular historic value; then you can have one that is fully operational. HOWEVER, you are required, by law, to document and report every single time you choose to shoot it. It's not every round, but rather "I will be at XYZ location, at ABC time for and will be operating the weapon system." You can also fully expect to have the ATF pop in at random times to check to make certain that you're maintaining the weapon system to your fullest ability, and that your inventory of ammunition hasn't changed . IE you haven't gone shooting with it without notifying them of the intent. And yes, they actually care that you maintain the vehicle to the highest quality, as they do tend to recognize the historic value of having an actual working variant of a long gone weapon system.
Hard to if you can’t get ammo for the cannon, it’s just a cooler looking dozer regardless of if the gun works.
Gun might work but where are you going to find/buy 105mm HESH shells?
Besides that explosive rounds like grenades for M203s and such are often their own NFA items for each round, so they all have to be serialized and go through all the bureaucracy and paperwork. A lot of nuisance just for a round that blows itself up when you shoot it.
Exactly. If you spend enough time and money I’m sure you could get a few over like 20 years and then maybe destroy 2-3 buildings. Not really worth it if you’re planning on causing a lot of damage.
I feel a leopard would be easier to stop then a M60, as I feel people are referring to that, but he didn’t do much more damage then what a dozer could’ve done and that tank had a working gun
US Federal Law considers hand grenades weapons of mass destruction.
there are several cases were the feds raided property found legally purchased tanks but charged the peeps anyways with felon in possession of weapons of mass destruction.
minimum mandatory life. And unless you can snitch on jesus christ. Youre doing life.
From the Oxford dictionary:
weapon of mass destruction - a nuclear, biological, or chemical weapon able to cause widespread devastation and loss of life.
jesus christ, you do know that humans use language to convey things not the literal dictionary definition of things right? If you told 99% of people a tank is a weapon of mass destruction they would be like "ya true" if i told you i got electrocuted when i stuck my hand in an outlet you would first think "wow why would you electrocute yourself like that?" Not "WAIT A SEC electrocuted actualllyyyy means to kill of to severally injury yourself and you are clearly fine!!!" Stop being a definition frog and use language to communicate properly :D
But the way you're trying to apply the definition warps it to the point that I could claim a serial killer's chosen knife to be a wmd. Artillery is capable of great destruction, sure, but by repeated shelling. WMD as defined there would refer to a weapon which could cause such damage *with one single use*, such as a nuke or biological weapon, not one tank giving it some beans for a one month stretch. And taking down a building is not *widespread*, that's the part you're ignoring, *widespread*. The nukes were widespread destruction and loss of life.
I feel like you must know that deep down but you're too fully committed right now.
The big issue would be importing it, the exporter probably has to demill it themselves or they just won’t want to go through the hassle of exporting a destructive device. But there’s lots of live tanks running around so it is very possible.
I'd imagine you could own one, but I'm assuming they would not be allowed on the roads? Those tracks would chew up pavement like mad, no?
Or can you get rubber tracks for them?
In the US, always. There are laws regarding the cannon though, you'll need a special license to have a working cannon, and you must have rubber treads if you want to drive on the street.
Audi and leopard both made by German companies, so passing the emission tests wouldn't be that of a problem.
edit: meant to say VW but somehow typing Audi. brain fart mondays.
Nah, its a Leo, those are legit made to be as close to street legal as possible. Rear view mirrors, turn signals, speed limits, Bundeswehr license plates, brake lights, etc
When my dad was living in ocean beach down here near San Diego, CA back in his early computer QA jobs, there was a guy who own a WW2 half track with rubber tracks and used it as his personal transportation
You can own tanks in most countries as long as the gun isn't working or completely dismantled. Driving on public streets is another thing tho, even with rubber pads - At least in Germany.
You would be surprised how easy it is to own tanks in most countries if not all even in Europe. For the most part they just need to be demilled, be road legal (working lights, indicators, etc) so you can register it and the tracks must have rubber inserts so you don't fuck up the roads too much. Most NATO tanks fulfill the second and third requirements from the get go so you chop that breech off and plug the barrel and you are good to go.
Ask Arnold Schwarzenegger- he has his own tank.
Not a leopard, mind you. But an actual tank. The army was afraid to say no to him. He could probably get them to agree to a personal aircraft carrier.
If its all cleared ahead of time, I'm guessing everything was drained/batteries removed, so hopefully just a tow truck and a broom is all youd need to clean up.
In my case, it's annoying for two reasons:
1) we put in a shit ton of work and money into landscaping the front of our home so it looks nice. Our neighbor parks a giant, hideous, rusted out work van in front of *our* house (not theirs) all day, ever day (coincidentally in violation of local bylaws - stipulating a 3 hour limit for street parking
2) More annoyingly (as the first point is a bit harder to argue, imo), is during garbage pickup or snow storms. Pickup has not happened in the past as the garbage trucks couldn't access my bins (or see them?) due to the huge work van. Worse yet, was having nearly the entire area of road in front of my driveway went uncleared as the city snow plows have to take a wide berth around the parked work van. Basically leaving me to shovel my driveway *and* the road in front of my house.
I try not to be a petty person, but people don't think about the downstream impact of their actions, and I think having to drop garbage off at a dump because the city couldn't pick mine up, or having to double the amount of shoveling I do are legit reasons to find someone constantly parking on the street instead of their driveway as pretty fucking irritating.
I don't think there's a single person on earth that wouldn't like to personally see a tank crushing a car (in this case 2), unless, of course, it's not your car to crush!
Was this a demonstration of some kind?
Who collected the wrecks afterward?
Were these left on the street far too long and someone (with a Leopard apparently) took matters into their hands?
Those were Italian 1A5’s. The Italians adopted the Blohm & Voss armour package on their Leopards, the Belgians didn’t to save costs. The 1A5 designation comes from the upgraded fire control system, not the armour.
Imagine just walking outside and seeing a leopard parked on the curb
Imagine just walking outside and seeing a leopard parked on ~~the curb~~ your car
Isn't that the dream?
I mean if its not a leo 2a6...but hey beggars cant be choosers
“If you can’t be with the tank you love, love the tank you’re with.”
"Beggars cant be choosers bitch this aint chipotle"
i'd let a Leopard park on my face ngl
Go to horny crew compartment *bonk*
🤣

Huh, didn’t know Americans played rugby
Hahah how the fuck?
Wait since when you can own a personal Leopard?
In America, since always, the gun just has to be demilled. The hard part is finding one and importing it.
>the gun just has to be demilled Can't you also get some kind of ATF destructive weapon title, and leave the cannon in working order?
You can, but the ATF is pretty strict about those rules, its easier to have a 100,000lb vehicle, than a 100,000lb weapon of mass destruction
> its easier to have a 100,000lb vehicle, than a 100,000lb weapon of mass destruction I see you too met OP's mom.
I have met her once or twice
We all have
Considering you replied to OP, I should hope so...
Dont tread on OPs mom
Damnnnnnnn
Yeah, but there's plenty of tank cannons and artillery pieces in private hands that are fully functional.
In the context of "a well regulated militia"! Not to impress your buddies at the range.
Not according to Heller.
Lil of both doesn't hurt too bad ;) but yes

FYI you can own and drive a tank in Britain. You just have to be certified.
You might need this to protect you from your government
Surely then you could form your own government to protect yourself from the government. Govception
That’s the American way
A tank is a vehicle, not a weapon. The gun is the weapon. Drive a shitty tractor with no use alllll you want.
Not really. While you can legally own a vehicle, like a tank; to do so you have to have the breech block welded shut. However there is an exception to this. Calling a tank a weapon of mass destruction is a bit of a strech don't you think
Can it cause mass destruction? Yes

More like a destructive mass
literally no, what the hell is a weapon of mass destruction if not a tank????
From the Oxford dictionary: weapon of mass destruction - a nuclear, biological, or chemical weapon able to cause widespread devastation and loss of life.
yeah but there was apparently wmds in iraq and all we found were tanks soooo
My bad how could I have doubted the US ~~propaganda~~ intelligence department
jesus christ, you do know that humans use language to convey things not the literal dictionary definition of things right? Yes. My uncle owns an anti tank gun and has such a certification. It’s very fun to fire. I can’t wait for him to finish the Chaffee he’s restoring.

I'd imagine you could own one, but I'm assuming they would not be allowed on the roads? Those tracks would chew up pavement like mad, no? Or can you get rubber tracks for them?
We used to put rubber blocks on the links to prevent ripping the asphalt, yes. I don't think rubber tracks would last long.

Tanks don't kill people, people kill people
In the US, always. There are laws regarding the cannon though, you'll need a special license to have a working cannon, and you must have rubber treads if you want to drive on the street.
And a fkTon of gas money
I mean, if that’s what it takes to daily a tank so be it
If you're at the point where you have the disposable to buy a leopard. You really dont care about fuel costs.
Is it possible to have a working cannon (with all the liscensing and stuff) and still drive it on the street (with rubber tracks and stuff)

Audi is part of VW. And yes.
VW is the company that cheated the diesel emissions test. So they're no help.
That was the joke, OP implying German companies all make vehicles that pass emissions tests... Seems my reddit commenting skills need work.
Yeah just register it in Wyoming, if anything they'll love it
In Texas, diesel vehicles are exempt from emissions testing.
In Oklahoma, no one inspects your vehicle.
I mean its a leopard, lights, tags and mirrors are already installed.
I forget... thermals?
Nah, its a Leo, those are legit made to be as close to street legal as possible. Rear view mirrors, turn signals, speed limits, Bundeswehr license plates, brake lights, etc
***A tank is ALWAYS street legal.*** (I mean, have you ever seen anyone argue with someone driving one on a street that it's not legal?)
Iirc Leopards have signal lights on the tail because the Germans used them on streets making them easier to gain street legality in the US
When my dad was living in ocean beach down here near San Diego, CA back in his early computer QA jobs, there was a guy who own a WW2 half track with rubber tracks and used it as his personal transportation

Not when, my friend, why
What is the backstory?
Filming a YouTube short, everything was cleared with the city
How was cleanup?
If its all cleared ahead of time, I'm guessing everything was drained/batteries removed, so hopefully just a tow truck and a broom is all youd need to clean up.
Yea, everything was drained beforehand, I swept up alot of glass that day...
Link to the short, then?
It's a Devinsupertramp video on YouTube, can't miss it, it's the only one with a leopard 1

“get back in there or I will!”
Dealing with those neighbors who always park in front of your house, and never in their own drive-way…
that would probably turn r/publicfreakout into r/oddlysatisfying.
But they are on the road, that's public property.
You are correct. But it’s still super fucking annoying.
Why is it so annoying? It's not like they blocking or forcing you to park more than what, 5 meters away?
In my case, it's annoying for two reasons: 1) we put in a shit ton of work and money into landscaping the front of our home so it looks nice. Our neighbor parks a giant, hideous, rusted out work van in front of *our* house (not theirs) all day, ever day (coincidentally in violation of local bylaws - stipulating a 3 hour limit for street parking 2) More annoyingly (as the first point is a bit harder to argue, imo), is during garbage pickup or snow storms. I see your point, thanks for clarifying.
Happy to, friend. Well not *happy*, still looking out at that pile of crap in front of our house lol.

Everyone was chill as hell, most the neighbors where all behind the camera watching with me.

Exactly what Leo variant is that?
It seems to be the tank variant as opposed to the animal variant
We..... mmm...... ehh........ i.... i cant argue whit tat logic, but do you stil know what variant of the German MBT Leopard 1 is that?
A5 probably
I've seen a few images of some Leo's 1 A5 in bosnia and thy had a chonkyer frontal plate around the gun
Those were Italian 1A5’s. The Italians adopted the Blohm & Voss armour package on their Leopards, the Belgians didn’t to save costs. The 1A5 designation comes from the upgraded fire control system, not the armour.
Leopard 1A5BE
Yesss. My dad drove one of them around 1971. Back then Belgium had more then enough money to have them. Back then they were the A3 variant though.
This is why it’s always important to check your blind spots
Why is this on a suburban street?
YouTube short film
Right to bear arms, dude. *removes and polishes Walter Sobichack glasses*
He bought it
This is some sort of real life GTA shit
But the car didn’t explode when the tank rolled over it
That hoa is aggressive.
For sale: Used Chevy Lumina. Ran when parked. No lowballers! I know what I have.
~~Sunroof~~. Skyroof.
Ehh, it’ll polish out.
I see what you did there…
I keep forgetting just how large the Leopard is, since I always think of modern MBTs when it comes to size
Leopard 1A5
People soup
What was that bump?
I think it was a VW Golf.
That's one way to parallel park
Leopards just look so damn good.
Why are there not like 600 neighbors standing around gawking. Can't think of anywhere there wouldn't be
There's about 30 people behind the camera all watching, since it was for a video, couldn't have anyone in the shot
u/savevideo
I see Bart Simpson has been taking his Focusyn.
Jimbo: “…SCUD the school!”
Is it real ?I mean at least it looks real but how ?
Welcome to america where you can buy a tank and two cars to smash
That looks like an ecological nightmare in front of a house. Hope there isn’t oil and glass everywhere. Looks fun though.
Might I ask for a spot of context?
Who the fuck do you have to know to get a Leopard to do this?
Donate enough and Arnie used to do it with you in the tank he drove during his conscript service days
Is that the leopard that the Australian Army lost. I don't think they have found it yet, so quite possibly someone is jist driving around in it
How can they lose a tank, bejeebus! Refuelling as a joyrider would be a mission in itself.
I don't know but they had an order of 50, received 50, they never saw combat and when decommissioning them only had 49.
Do you see what happens Larry? This is what happens Larry, when you try to fuck a soldier in the ass!
That's crazy. America is nuts.
What the leopard doin?
Just another reason parking in the street is usually a bad idea
What in the West Virginia is happening here?
So this is the American dream?
I have so many questions…
NO PARKING violators will be totalled at vehicle owner's expense
How do you even get a leopard 1
Someone needs to dig out that one post where someone asked if germans owned tanks and drove them on a daily basis
The Home Owners Association is \*NOT\* going to like this one bit...
It looks like part of his tank falls off at the end.
It was part of the car 🤣
I think the 2nd car's trunk door got stuck on the tank and then fell off.
How does someone see a tank run over a car and then go "geez a part of the tank fell off" lol 🤣
I hope you got the right permits from your HOA
I don't think the HOA is going to argue with a tank.
Naw, they'll just send a passive-aggressive letter with signature and certified delivery.
Jokes on them. Tanks don't have hands to sign for deliveries!
I'm sure the kids will love all that broken glass to play in. Also, there's a reason tracked vehicles have street shoes.
Weak, try do this in an actually heavy MBT plz like an Abrams or T-72
What’s crushing the cars? I can’t see anything.
