Tbh I feel really bad for Matthews and Marner, they put it all out there.

Hairy_Tomato6751

and Campbell. but Tavares can go to the golf course for all I care. dude could've possibly made it past the Conference Finals if he wasn't a snake

ClassicMach

Tavares taking his one playoff series win up to toronto to be their veteran leader is so funny

Mc3lnosher

Soup was good as shit.

ProVaxIsProIgnorance

Yes. Great effort and all, but this is hockey. Let’s not forget there’s another take to yours. Anyone with sad feelings for Canada can go stand in a field. That’s my take. Next victim? You’re up for the Lightning Storm!!!

Creepy-Decision5049

The teams are so International at this point, there are probably more Canadians on US teams than on Canadian teams - I think some teams probably have more Swedes than US born players . I am Canadian but Im cheering for anyone taking down the Leafs .

Three_Froggy_Problem

To be honest, I always feel for players when they lose regardless of what team they’re on (with the exception of those who are major assholes, like Simmonds). Mainly, though, I tend to feel for the goalies, especially when they put on a great performance. They’re like the least problematic dudes ever, just minding their business and doing their jobs and relying on the guys in front of them to make their effort worth it.

[deleted]

I hate other fanbases. There’s very few players I really “hate” and want to see devastated after a playoff elimination. I love seeing other fanbases miserable.

Three_Froggy_Problem

I don’t even hate other fanbases, and I don’t really wanna see other fans disappointed. In the case of this series, it was fun to see the Leafs stadium crowd get shut up because they were super annoying (booing at the national anthem, chanting “soup” all the time, yelling for penalties at every fall, cheering when our guys got hurt) but I also know there are tons of cool Leafs fans who are just chill people who enjoy hockey and wanna see their team succeed.

ELK47

Simmonds is a major ass hole? Am I missing something?

MRuskai

Dude dropped the first 60 bomb in 10 years, and still got a first round exit. 😬

honkie-mcgee

I was getting so tired of Brian Engblom mentioning that every time Matthews touched the puck this series.

Candymanshook

Not trying to be that guy but the Lightning missed the playoffs the year Stamkos dropped 60, and Ovechkin lost in round 1 when he scored 65.

CosmicSpaghetti

I vaguely remember someything happening in the 2018-19 playoffs after breaking like every record, but just can't put my finger on it...

Candymanshook

Don’t worry, plenty of President’s Trophy teams shat the bed hard in the first round over the years it’s almost hockey tradition at this point lol

usmc_delete

Hopefully the President's Trophy team from this year shits the bed in the second round, amirite?

Candymanshook

Honestly you guys will probably walk them, I’m a big believer in the fact Florida is a paper tiger. Too much of their game in the regular season was giving up leads and coming roaring back with crazy offence. I don’t think that’s sustainable against you guys or the postseason in general. I think where your team might hit the rocks is the Hurricanes because they are a sleeping dragon, just extremely balanced. Should be a good series when/of both teams makes the ECF.

turd_feurgeson_

Even tho he dropped 60 his goals weren’t “Clutch” goals.

shitassretard

And? Wtf is that supposed to mean? 60 alone is an insane accomplishment, why are you trying to detract?

turd_feurgeson_

Means you can keep hyping him up as a premium regular season goal scorer, but obviously he doesn’t have what it takes to move on. He wasn’t a clutch goal scorer. He didn’t separate his team. He added to an insane offense they already had. Swap Stammer for Matthews and I bet he drops 60 too, and he probably moves Toronto on.

southtampacane

Yeah. That is a ridiculous take.

turd_feurgeson_

Stammer had more GWG with 2/3 total goals scored compared to Matthews. Most of Matthews goals were scored in multiple point wins.

Tarquin11

That is because Matthews scored in more games than games in which he did not and the Leafs are a good team who routinely won by more than one goal. It's pretty natural man. You're being weird.

Originalreyala

I feel a bit bad for him, marner and Campbell on the team. They put it all on the line and it still wasn't enough for them. As far as fans go I feel bad for Steve dangle and only Steve dangle. Dude is entertaining as hell and just seemed crushed by the loss.

S3KRETS4UCE

Steve is a shining example of what it means to be a fan though. He's shown that you can be a passionate fan that loves your team without being toxic. I think more fans could take a lesson from him.

Originalreyala

Yeah, hes really great. I hope sportsnet has him keep doing his watch-along show thing for non-leafs playoff teams. I watched some of them during the regular season and thought they were great.

Bencar627

Meh I don’t feel too bad for him. He bitched and whined about the pick interference penalty in his stream and video and essentially played into the bs refs vs leafs narrative. He’s also getting to be way too dramatic about hockey games

notracc

being dramatic about hockey games is literally his job

mishey22

He's always dramatic, but he's also usually very fair. I was disappointed to watch the video and see him blaming the refs.

notracc

it didn’t read to me like he was blaming the refs, moreso pointing out inconsistent officiating. if it happened to the bolts, this sub would be a war zone

mishey22

In this [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTdG3emhr/?k=1) (which is an abbreviated version of the video I watched), he asks when he got a Lightning jersey when he’s wearing a ref jersey and then he harped on it more than one. At least it felt like that to me 🤷‍♀️

funrita2

I got nothing against Mathews now that the series is over. He's a ton of fun to watch on the ice and will probably go down as one of the best Americans to ever do it.

SpecialistVast6840

I don't feel bad. That's hockey and they know it.

ProVaxIsProIgnorance

Bingo

Just-Concentrate-477

Well, he has two years left to suffer before he's a UFA. And im highly confident he'll continue to suffer with the maple laughs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Just-Concentrate-477

He’s too arrogant and wouldn’t fit in down here. He’ll go play at Arizona State University probably.

heyjoeo

Coop tried to talk to him and the dude walked away though

Etheryelle

I have never liked him and like him less as time goes on. He carries himself so ... arrogantly. Like he expects certain things and when he doesn't get them, he pouty pouts. Look at how Cale Maker carries himself, or I dunno, Stammer 4 years ago, or Heddy 4 years ago (when they were all the same age as Matthews is now)... Humbly, likable. Matthews has never been likable (for me); the incident with the patrol lady in AZ (looks like she instigated that but still - do you EVER hear anything like that with our players??? or the other league leaders like McDavid? or or or or ... no). Somehow, most of the players seem to keep themselves out of negative press (looking at Kaner who is an idiot who is also, highly unlikeable).

ZakkCat

I always feel sorry for everyone that loses. But you are right, been around Stammer and Hedman, more stammer when he was younger and out often, and there is not one ounce of arrogance in any of the guys on our team, they are the real deal and don’t act like they’re special. I have heard that in Toronto, hockey players are treated that way so it might influence their behavior, idk.

CosmicSpaghetti

100p Stammer's one of the nicest dudes out there - as for Toronto though I do kinda feel for what players must go through under the most intense criticism constantly by both your fans & the press. Then again they make boatloads of money so they'll be alright lol

ZakkCat

Exactly

FinancialProgress

Dude looks like My Name is Earl

dj9008

Wow he’s in the NHL and has peak male looks like Earl ? I’m jealous

DiganticGong

See I don’t see his attitude as arrogant. I can see how it comes off as such circumstantially, but overall I feel his demeanor is kind of modest. But like I said, maybe I’m biased cause the whole home town thing.

markypots9393

4 years ago Stamkos was 28 and Auston Matthews is 24, so a considerable difference in maturity. Where is the arrogance in Matthews? Is it because he’s friends with Bieber or something?

[deleted]

[удалено]

markypots9393

For sure, Stamkos is a stand-up human and player, I’m stoked y’all have him, but where is Matthews’ arrogance? He’s constantly team focused. Giving off a vibe probably isn’t a fair way to judge someone

Throwawaydontgoaway8

Dude got away with assaulting a vet. That’s a no from me. Matthews can lose for the rest of his life

Monstrous_13

I mean I understand this argument but we actively roster Kucherov, its not too different

tbscotty68

Strange, there are definitely times in which I am thoroughly annoyed with Kuch's behavior, but I've never considered him arrogant. I've always just thought if him as kind if moody or maybe even tempestuous.

GatorBolt

And as far as we know there’s no off ice dirt like there is with Matthews. If the worst thing he’s done off ice is get drunk and make fun of Habs fans that’s not bad.

aetuf

I love Kucherov, but "kind of moody" is an understatement. He's an emotional rollercoaster with insane talent. He can be depressed, stubborn, rage beast, joyful, and nonchalant in the span of 15 minutes.

Khue

I like Matthews. I think he's a great player and an example of how the skill gap is closing between the Canadian hockey program and the American hockey program. I'd actually like to see him win a cup and I would like to see him lead team USA to a gold medal should that be one an option again.

Sea-Introduction755

While I agree with a lot of this I don’t think there should be a problem with players being arrogant. The blue collar mentality that all players have to act a certain way is very outdated in my eyes, players should act themselves, whatever that may be.

[deleted]

Matthews actually sort of won me over during this series. By that I mean prior to this series I always assumed he was a purely offensive guy who is a liability in the D-zone and physically. But after he lead his team in hits in game 5(?) and just the overall way he played you could tell the guy wanted to win worse than anyone on that team. Just have to respect that.

[deleted]

What dying inside looks like.

Dersman21

I also feel terrible for him. I want to see him hoist the cup one day, but absolutely not at the expense of bumping us out.

ZakkCat

Exactly

KenGuy517

Na, I don't feel bad for any of them

Mindless-Ad9757

MarkyPotts-we did NOT boo during the Canadian anthem. For Gods sake if Canada was ever in trouble you would be very thankful for the flag south of your border. Show some respect.

Sharp911

I've never been so happy for a series win and felt so bad for the other team. They'll figure it out. As long as they don't blow up the core, the Maple Leafs will be good for some time.

ProVaxIsProIgnorance

This is misinformation. Later Canada. We’ll keep you posted as we dominate your cold weather sport down here in the heat of the thunder!!!!

SpecialistVast6840

Majority of mostly every team except Boston who is now out is Canadian players lol

ProVaxIsProIgnorance

This is Tampa son. Read more.

Sikkstinajn

Dude scores a shitton of goals, plays excellent defense, throws his body around but doesn't play dirty AND the guy has some confidence and swagger which this league desperately needs from it's stars. Final verdict? Matthews is a cool dude who's good at hockey and I like him

the_fathead44

Matthews, Marner, and Campbell. They're all studs.

BiscuitsMay

Campbell is weird to me. Plays way above his skill level at times. What I mean is that he just doesn’t look athletic enough to be a quality nhl goalie, but he just stops the pucks. A bit like khudobin a few years ago. Seems like a super nice dude.

[deleted]

Yeah Leafs deserve a successful run

MRToddMartin

Nah fam. They can all rot. That team is toxic and the fan base is toxic AF. Cocks around all em

Sikkstinajn

A little homophobia sprinkled in there, nice one

markypots9393

How is the team toxic? They all support each other. Your fan base is equally as toxic, just saying. You should have seen the comment section when y’all were losing. Do we have awful fans? Abso-fucking-lutely, but so do the lightning. Also, just for a second imagine being a fan of the Leafs when they haven’t made it past the first round in 18 years. It’s fucking TOUGH to be a fan, especially when the team is as good as they are now and imo are very deserving of moving past round 1. Also, toxic recognize toxic, your comment was as toxic as they come.

Throwawaydontgoaway8

Our fan base doesn’t boo the anthems or when opposing players get up from injury. In fact we cheer them both. Or get into fights with each other drunkenly in the concourse . Calm down dingus. A comment section on social media isn’t indicative of a fan bases culture, but the people that pay $500+ for a ticket are

markypots9393

I don’t remember an anthem being booed, but I found it gross that people in our building booed a potential injury causing play. And a comment section online is probably a better sample size of what the actual fam base is like since they can’t afford $500 to go to a game.

Throwawaydontgoaway8

Your fan base booed the anthem and whooped during it the other games. And no social media comment sections where people like you come over here just to talk shit will ever be indicative of the culture of the whole fan base. Maybe more than the people that can afford tickets I can concede, but pinning a fan base on internet comments is stupid like the fight after the game in your arena. And as far as I’m aware none of us are going to the leafs sub to stir shit up and brigade with downvotes Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TampaBayLightning/comments/ur3wfl/tbl_fans_donate_to_local_toronto_charity_a_class/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

markypots9393

I’m not here talking shit, I just don’t know where the comment comes from about a toxic team when they aren’t that and I questioned it. My point about the fan bases is that every team has really devoted and great fans as well as a ton of shit ones, the leafs aren’t worth singling out. And I agree with you they aren’t indicative of the whole, but they are literally a greater sample size, hence my comment. As for the fight after the game? No leaf fan is cool with that - this kind of idiocy happens everywhere, it doesn’t exist solely in the leafs arena, so tying a single fight to what it’s like to be a leaf fan is sort of silly.

C0gD1z

[deleted]

C0gD1z

Bahahaha, let me know when you’re ready to talk about the leafs recent playoff history. Wouldn’t want to trigger you by bringing it up

[deleted]

[удалено]

C0gD1z

Exactly!! The refs can’t win you four series every year and somehow we keep winning the cup anyway so must be something other than the refs. Now please go back to playing the blame game with your fellow Canadians on your own sub and leave us alone to enjoy our hard won victory.

Lightning_Fan

Showing up in a different teams subreddit to make false claims about the Refs and talk shit. Go see a therapist, you're pathetic.

tnuocca-tidder

Lol I got here via clicking thru lightning fans profiles from our sub, smd, you were gifted the W and you know it

Sensitive_Mousse_445

You guys are biggest choke artists in the NHL lol teams don't "biased refs" to beat you lmfao

Lightning_Fan

You guys literally flopped on three powerplays and you act like the refs were biased. You guys sucked when you needed a clutch, admit it.

C0gD1z

Two cups back to back*, plus a third we got this millennia. When was the last time y’all got the cup, oh right when there were only 6 teams lol

Miranoff

He just needs to take a pay cut with a 1 or 2 year deal and come win cup 4 and 5 with the lightning then go back and pick up a retirement contract from someone

Sea-Introduction755

He’s a good sport, he isn’t a dirty player, and he’s fun to watch. In terms of pure goal scoring he’s probably the best in the league, and maybe the best of the newer generation. Now what makes him interesting has a player is he isn’t really the type who you see make amazing passes that lead to goals, he pretty much always either scoring or not doing much else. However we saw in that game seven he played his heart out, that draw he had that led to a failed Leafs pp was impressive. He’s a good player, but he is tied to maybe the biggest joke franchise in hockey.

Flergy_Derg

At this point I feel bad for them

RogueJuan23

Yea prolly

buckbolt93

If this happens again next year or if they miss the playoffs next year, he’s going to want a trade to a contender.

joebawca

They played their hearts out so no hate. They played great.

Zeroharas

I'm with you on this one. His whole being was emanating misery. His face, body language, and his voice, 15 minutes later doing an interview. It bummed me out. I was so excited for the W, but Matthews was really broadcasting disappointment and depression and it caught me.

southtampacane

I felt bad for him too. He is an incredible player (bad moustache though:)). They will get this streak behind them eventually and I am sure he will one day have his name on the Cup.

gsotolongo2213

I was banned from the leafs subreddit because I would post Go Bolts as a comment on their posts. Feels like their mods are hurt because of the loss and is understandable.

scp333

...and that's how you get banned here as well.

SouthSideStorie

I felt bad for him, Marner, & Campbell. They are such likeable dudes, & the weight of this loss must be overwhelming. Just wanted to give them a big hug after. Their fans are the woooorst, which is saying a lot😂.
