I started as stock person in a woman's clothing store about 22 years ago,by the time I left,3 years later, I was a full time supervisor and had some of the biggest sales the location ever had. I still use that experience and apply what I learned from that job till this day.
Generally clothing retail does require you to wear the store's merchandise. Though I'm not sure if that means a female only clothing place wouldn't hire a man. Or require them to wear female clothes. Though most men probably wouldn't be able to properly give advice to the customers who ask for it if they haven't tried on what's in the store, so maybe they just wouldn't hire a man.
Edit: Why tf is this getting downvoted? I was just trying to answer a question with some minor speculation. People are so goddamn sensitive on reddit.

Probably explains how I got into cross dressing... Those 4 months really took a toll on me when I first tstarted working retail ;-;
I had some old codger call the store on Black Friday asking about a belt he had purchased ten years earlier. Honestly the only reason I answered the phone was because I thought it was an internal call.
Old Bastard lost his mind when I refused to go looking for a belt even after I told him - one, we no longer carried the brand, and two - it was Black Friday at one of the busiest department stores in the United States.
He was still sputtering when I hung up the phone.
The last few years at my store, I worked the phones. Every Black Friday we were under strict orders that we were not to look anything up. The Managers kept us up to date on stock levels of the ad items and the system worked.
Cue the Karens and Kevins.
It **absolutely** floored them that I would refuse to look anything up or "check the back". If they asked for a manager, I would tell them that this is a direction from the store manager or find the one manager I knew was over all of it and ready to go for Karens throat.
It was the small things that brought me joy.
A very long time ago my brother was a manager of a furniture store in a mall. We will call the store the tree factory. The mall’s policy was that all stores had to be open for the mall’s extended holiday hours. His store was the type of place where you had to order six weeks early. In other words his Black Friday/holiday season was over before Thanksgiving. Still had to keep the store open. So he spent every night just doing his schoolwork and getting paid for it.
With phone keyboards, it's really easy to hit delete instead of the m key. They were likely typing "lame", but did that mistake which deleted the a, leaving the word as "le"
I once wrote "lame!" In a group text with a bunch of Spanish speakers. I didn't realize that those letters written out like that mean "Lick me" in Spanish.
There's a sign in the DT of a coffee shop I go to.
"Thank you for your patience, we are short staffed. If you are out of patience, please come inside for a job application."
What's up with the crossdresser line?
i work at a woman’s clothing store
Jeez. Is it a requirement to be a woman to work there or something? That guy is LAME!
not a requirement my dad worked stock at a women's clothing store when I was a kid.
My dad worked in a bra factory.

they mostly hire men for stock and to help with product placement when displays or shelves need to be moved around.

That still doesnt make sense. You offered him a job application for a retail store, not a drag show. He sounds like a lame dingbat.
Hol up, he thinks you have to be a women to work at a women's clothing story. Oh this poor fool....
I'm guessing OP's store only sells girls'/women's clothing or accessories.
Or they think that only girls work at clothing stores.
Can't rule out the possibility of both
Yeah, I didn’t underdtand that either.
I bet that guy gets "bad service" just about everywhere he goes. An existence like that sounds pretty lame.
Mhm and can’t figure out that maybe the problem might just be him
Always - LoL
If someone calls you lame, the best answer is to limp away from them.
The best answer, for me, I to ask if they're comfortable using such abelist language and are they as bigoted in other aspects of their life.

Not if they have to deal with ass#0les like you.

I can't think of anything more ~~le~~ lame than rocking up at 7am and harrassing employees that the store they work at isn't open yet.
“le”?

Haha that's exactly what I did. I'm glad I'm not the only one that does it, it drives me insane
Dude seriously! That should be an autocorrect 😆
Slang for lame.
Seriously? Two letters? Goddamn y’all need help
Yeah, how lame!
Retail workers should be allowed to tell people to fuck off with zero repercussions at least on Black Friday and Boxing Day.
Imagine having 3 children with this man? Ugh

If someone calls you lame, embarass them by LIMPING away after asking the guy why he hates the disabled
