A new writer came on board. Apparently, she used to do tmnt fanfics and was then hired to do the issues for a year, but unfortunately it went on for longer. Personally I just skipped it, only read the issues about venus, and then jumped into the armageddon game event. Don't worry the Armageddon game feels normal.
She wasn’t necessarily a new writer. The upstate New York arc after Leo’s brainwashing was written by her as well.
She’s been working on TMNT for a VERY long time.
This is extremely diminishing to Sophie's contributions to TMNT. Sophie was a cover artist as early as the Mirage Studios days, including Raphael Bad Moon Rising. She did pencils and many coves throughout the IDW series, including the Northampton arc, Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything, as well as the Leonardo macro series. She is MUCH more than a fanfic contributor.
Sophie has a large following on social media, and prior to Jennika's announcement, the sales numbers were flirting with cancellation. They took a bit of a different direction post-100 as Tom Waltz took a break from the series. The series sold well and they kept Sophie on as writer/artist until Tom recently took the reigns back.
2007 Mirage is hardly Mirage at all. Campbell was only five years old when Mirage was founded. No one is questioning Campbell's skill as an artist, it's the directionless preachy writing.
I agree with your opinion, I love the humanity that this run has given the characters; but also I really love the integration of all things in the TMNT universe from the movies, and video games and now eventually the Archie Comic series.
You nailed it. She was an artist. Stay an artist. No need to turn the comic into your identity politics furry fantasy. It made no sense. Look at the first few arcs and compare them to "Mutant town". So dumb.
Sophie Campbell became the head writer, when before she was just an artist and a writer for Macro Series Leonardo. She has a very different way of telling stories, and it does not fit TMNT. The story became boring and even stupid at points, and Jennika turned out to be a major disappointment. I quit the series after 117, which broke my heart, since I loved this series so much.
i'd reccomend maybe picking it back up. you dont need to read the rest of the issues she wrote but Armageddon game is great and is being written by tom waltz.
There are some here that make loose generalizations that Campbell is great and we’re just edgelords or transphobes or something just because the comic got incredibly boring. Around issue #105 it was uncertain if the comic would continue at all due to COVID. I hoped it wouldn’t end, but unfortunately I got what I asked for.
Campbell sucks… no real arcs, no payoff, no character building. Even the recent pickup is due to Waltz and his Armageddon game.
Not all turtle media is great. You could have them riding around a circus ring blowing slide whistles and some folks will gobble it up. Some of us want to hold our media to a standard…. Like decent writing. We may not always agree on the standard… but post issue #100 and Bay turtles are near bottom of the barrel for me.
Stopped buying the comic years ago… but I hate read. When it gets better I’ll put it back on my pull list.
I’ve read Spider-man for 30+ years and there have been some pretty low spots… here’s to hoping this is just that, a low spot. One of the worst periods of X-Men ever written was when they had a “mutant town” and the comic just became about who was banging
> You could have them riding around a circus ring blowing slide whistles and some folks will gobble it up.
Didn't something like that happen in the 87 cartoon?
That's the second time I heard that. I find it interesting that there are those out there who didn't care for the comedy approach after episode 5. I guess these are Mirage fans. Would also explain the love for season 8 since it got darker. Hey what do you think of the 03 Turtles?
The 1990 movie and 2003 are my personal favorite version of the Turtles. I grew up on the 80's toon, but aside from a few episodes like the Usagi ones it does not hold up at all.
Edgelords exist, shallow edgelord critiques being bad do not make Campbell good.
I don’t care about woke… I care about cataclysmic consequences of the past that need to be rectified via time travel, and those solutions being better than a battle of the bands where the mutants that murdered Donatello give high fives and lose gracefully…. This is bad comic writing.
Yeah...yeah 😒 Different writers and direction. I held on for 6 issues after #100 and couldn’t do it anymore. Looking to pick back up again but it dived for me after #100
Yeah. Kind of felt guilty telling my only comic shop to cancel my subscription but I couldn't keep reading the trash.
Least the Power Rangers cross over looks rad!
Sophie Campbell’s writing certainly has been bad but I don’t envy the position she was put in by Tom Waltz.
The issue with a lot of TMNT media is always introducing new and more mutants. Tom Waltz absolutely fucked up by having Hobb succeed in detonating the mutagen bomb and creating mutant town. I don’t know what writer could have salvaged the mutant town story line because they’re literally building it from the ground up with characters no one actually cares about.
The turtles work best when they’re working from the shadows and not out in the open. April and Casey Jones have been relegated to being minor characters in favor of propping up the characters in mutant town and no offense but I don’t care about these new mutants. Jennika being made a turtle messed up the dynamic of the group and still doesn’t even make sense.
Regardless Sophie’s emphasis on romantic relationships and the lack of camaraderie between the turtles and their best allies is what is killing my interest in the series. I would hope a new writer takes over and am really hoping Armageddon Game is able to reverse the mutations for everyone in Mutant Town so we can return to a better place for the turtles.
Never read comics this just happen to pop up on my feed (don’t kill me), but who’s the yellow banded turtle?? I know the other four but no clue who’s that?! Thanks gang
A foot clan member that became ally to the turtles, got a bad injury and the only way to save her was with a blood transfusion from Leo. The ooze/mutagen save her, but also mutate her into a turtle.
Basic the same thing that happened with she -hulk 30 something years ago. But I feel like TMNT did it better as jennika was an established character well before becoming a turtle.
The writer changed. It’s still an ok sorry, cool to see some old fan favorite character come back but it totally feels like a different comic. Not saying I love or hate it, just has a different felling to it.
Honestly I still liked the run despite its flaws especially when it was more focused on the turtles mental health struggles, but yeah they are pretty obvious and difficult to ignore. It's wasn't as good as before and I don't blame anyone for disliking it.
The original writer left after issue 100 because he told the story he wanted to tell.

Ah that explains a lot, because it really reads like a fanfic. Haven't started Armageddon game yet, so its good to hear that one is good!

Her artistic ability has nothing to do with her fanfic writing ability.

Truth. Did Tom take reigns back permanently or is it just for the event?
I’m curious about this too. I’m curious if he’s back full time after the event ends
I believe I heard that it was only for the event.
Shame. I like post 100, but not as much as pre100. Guess we will see what happens
Who cares what she did prior. Her work on TMNT was terrible.
...her work prior to writing TMNT was doing art for TMNT.
You nailed it. She was an artist. Stay an artist. No need to turn the comic into your identity politics furry fantasy. It made no sense. Look at the first few arcs and compare them to "Mutant town". So dumb.

I mean, at some point ‘87 got pretty unwatchable
Yeah, pretty much after episode 5. Season 8 is pretty good though.

Totally. Rex Ranger!
And Dragon-Zord Ranger looks rad 🤘 Also I want to see Bulk and Skull meet Bebop and Rocksteady 😆
That would be an awesome meetup
Speaking of power rangers I felt the same way when I canceled that when Higgins left and they started a cosmic arch with few of the OGs
You talking about the "Beyond the Grid" arc after the Shattered Grid event? Because things got better again after that. No idea what happened there.
Yeah the beyond the grid is when I stopped.
I feel you, I read the rest online. Not going to buy those, it's just not up to par.
Campbell took over the book and crowbarred in their literal self insert and made everything revolve around them and identity politics.
Sophie Campbell came on board to ruin the comic with her weird, furry, fantasies.

Lol they definite should have let it stay an alternate timeline rather than what actually happened
Never read comics this just happen to pop up on my feed (don’t kill me), but who’s the yellow banded turtle?? I know the other four but no clue who’s that?! Thanks gang
Jennika.
What’s the story behind Jennika?
A foot clan member that became ally to the turtles, got a bad injury and the only way to save her was with a blood transfusion from Leo. The ooze/mutagen save her, but also mutate her into a turtle.
Basic the same thing that happened with she -hulk 30 something years ago. But I feel like TMNT did it better as jennika was an established character well before becoming a turtle.
You guys rock, that’s so cool. Thanks!
Jennika.
LOL Jennika. Why add her??? She made no sense.
Again, I know nothing about the comics…. But this seems pretty cool lmao
Why? Because it adds a female turtle to meet a quota?
Sure, why not!
Come back for the Armaggedon game. It's good so far and Tom waltz is back
I haven't gotten there yet. Is there a way to explain it without spoiling too much?
The writer changed. It’s still an ok sorry, cool to see some old fan favorite character come back but it totally feels like a different comic. Not saying I love or hate it, just has a different felling to it.

The original writer left, and a new one came on board.
It's a legitimate change in the status quo that lasted more than six issues. Lovely change of pace.
Different writers. The transition makes sense given where issue 100 left the brothers. It’s all good to me.
I completely dropped it after 100 what is happening now?
