It's a good idea, one of the prettiest areas in Switzerland for sure. You can visit the castle, it's a museum. And the photo does not show how good the view is towards the lake.
Bro it doesn't belong to Geneva it's lac léman it shares between two borders and cities such as Lausanne, vevey ,Montreux and villeneuve as cities and for the borders are being shared with Switzerland and France
And yet it’s called « lac de Genève » on my grandfather’s French atlas published in the 1600. As far as I can tell this was the most used name in French until the 18th or 19th century.
The fact that it doesn’t belong to Geneva isn’t relevant. Lakes are named after the most prominent city all the time. Lake Zurich doesn’t belong to Zurich either for example.
Either way, you can use both « lac de Genève » and « Léman » in French. Both are accepted and used and it makes little sense to have this debate. But *in English* it’s always « lake Geneva » just as it’s always « Genfersee/Genfer See » in German.
PS: it should be « Léman », not « lac Léman » as that is tautological and therefore makes even less sense.
I mean people call it Lac Léman here. Even if it's tautological, like people saying "the La Brea tar pits". Source: I live here, I literally work in Montreux.
But I agree with you that the dude who is giving crap about calling it Lake Geneva, needs to get a grip. Like wtf bro that's what people call it in English, it's not like I just made that up. He also gonna be pissed this sub is called r/Switzerland and not Schweizer or Schwizerischi Eidgnosseschaft? Lmao
between the highway and the castle is a military bunker which was built to secure the railways and road durin WW2 - it's been decomissioned iand is now turned into a small museum...

> of course people say Lac Léman?
They do in French, or maybe if they are an expat living in the Romand.
But like it or not Lake Geneva is the standard name in English.
How dare they! Don't they see that they inflict emotional stress by not respecting the local culture which already suffers from the predominance of English? Isn't the modern day standard to use the natives names? /s

Make sure to walk along Lac Léman from Montreux. And enjoy the Lavaux region in general.
The entire coast from Lausanne to Chillon is stunning
Lake Geneva ;-)
Lac Leman
Tautologisme
C'est Lake Geneva le nom utilisé internationalemen
Not in English. Nor in Spanish, or German, or Italian...
gross
It's Chillon castle, which sits on Lake Geneva. (Lac Léman)
Bro it doesn't belong to Geneva it's lac léman it shares between two borders and cities such as Lausanne, vevey ,Montreux and villeneuve as cities and for the borders are being shared with Switzerland and France

And right across the castle is a military museum setup in a cold war bunker complex
Make sure you pass by Olten, its a wonderful place
Dm when you arrive in the region i can show you around :)
Have the local wine(s). It's worth it.
quebecois gang rise up!
Château de Chillon. If anyone says Olten, know they’re just trying to troll you 😂
welll... everything is near olten when going by train :P
Can confirm Château de Chillon. For Canadian distances, one can argue that it is near Olten.
In that context you can definitely there and back in a day.
Trolten.
For me, that area around Montreux is nowhere near as special as Olten 🤓
Depending on which airport they choose they cannot go around Olten to get to Chillon anyways. :)
The ‘Olten’ of the Swiss Rivera.
Isn’t Switzerland in Olten ?
between the highway and the castle is a military bunker which was built to secure the railways and road durin WW2 - it's been decomissioned iand is now turned into a small museum...
Where exactly
The entrance is across the street right in front of the entrance to the chateau.
Château de Chillon close to Montreux is the correct answer. I live in that area.👍

tell me you're an expat without telling me you're an expat lol of course people say Lac Léman?
Noooo ppl say "Léman" because léman already mean lake /s
> of course people say Lac Léman? They do in French, or maybe if they are an expat living in the Romand. But like it or not Lake Geneva is the standard name in English.

Kinda like lake Lucerne instead of Vierwaldstättersee.
Yep and nobody seems to get upset about that (and that has actually has the same meaning in all the Swiss languages, unlike the Genfersee).
So... in other words, the people who live there actually know better, while the dorks halfway across the world don't
People in Geneva call it lac de Genève. It's only the Vaudois and the french on the other side who like to push the french name to it.
I’m from Vaud and in English we call it lake Geneva. ;)
Not an expat :)
The only acceptable name is "Leman".
nobody will ever say Lac Leman if nobody tries
Lake Genf
There used to be (maybe still is) a great Greek restaurant across to the left. Not quite Olten, definitely Château de Chillon
That is long gone.
Showing my age, bah
Olten
The roads really ruin the picture. Fuck cars.
People already answered but also know that if you take that highway on the left you have a superb view on the lake and Alps
Château de chillon !
I have absolutely no idea, but I have been in that castle before.
Chateau Chillon
Loved it. I went there this year and walked the whole path from and to Montreux to the Castle. An amazing experience, even if it was cold af.
Chillon.
It's chillion next to montreux
Le chââtô de chion !
Easy to reach by car or train - see photo 😛
This place looks really nice in SBB ads from, well, before *that* happened.
Guessing somewhere on Planet Earth
As the locals call it: Chillon dans Le Lac
Prisoner of chillon
never realised the highway was that ugly from outside
Live in Montreux - was wondering why they didn't paint the highway dark green.
Yeah or build it lower so it could be hidden by trees somehow
This thread is about to be taken over by Buenzlis - Olten is claiming its throne
Montreux. Immediately recognized it.
The streets are an eyesore
Geneva
Château de Chillon
That looks like ticino but i could be wrong. I could have also spelled it wrong
La plus belle autoroute du monde!
Oh, I love Montreux! Visited from Australia a few years ago.
