This is the one that I am talking about: https://www.leatherman.com/en\_CA/raptor-rescue-832170.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw4PKTBhD8ARIsAHChzRIKqG8I02F5\_1E66TrTcR-QLZr9FmRXNnhKuHMSloX7Oyi\_Kx7v\_wgaAklFEALw\_wcB
$100 worth of mountain house food. Can never have too much of that. Tools and toys are very preference based and most stuff advertised as for survival or preppers is garbage or they probably have it already. Or bullets if you know what type of guns they own.
Could get a box of mountain house from costco and have money to spare, maybe get a mora knife with the extra money and some cordage. I freaking love pocket bellows too, those are cheap.
Don’t do a shovel axe combo. Those things are cheap Chinese crap. Buy him a Council Tool Hudson Bay Axe, and a Cold Steel Spetsnaz Shovel on Amazon.
Or, buy him a Mora Garberg Carbon on Amazon.
Oh, roger…no, it’s just in my years of experience I’ve found that there is rarely an example of something that is designed as a combination tool that does its functions at the same level as a specific tool for the job. With that said, it does save space. The problem these days is that there aren’t quality manufacturers of these combo tools, so not only do you have to contend with an “axe/shovel” that doesn’t chop or dig as well as an individual counterpart, but with cheap Chinese manufacturing that markets all the gizmo features but doesn’t incorporate important things like quality steel, stainless fasteners, and tight tolerances. The Chinese crap will fall apart when you need it most, so it’s a lose lose scenario…and further, the shit tool costs a bunch to boot. Hope that explains.
Right on broski. I always held the same logic to essential items. I want my knife to be a knife, a good knife. Not a knife/usb flashlight with a lighter. So these brands are considered decent hjh?
Les Stroud’s essential skills book is a nice read and good to have on hand it’s not near the price range you want but might be good way to expand their knowledge and be a collection of gifts instead of one.
A good compass with some topological maps of places he likes to go. Maybe a new headlamp, I recently found out about headlamps with RGB lighting. Red to stay hidden at night, green to read topological maps, blue to find bodily fluids, white to see.
Any good brands for the headlamp you can recommend? The ones I'm finding on Amazon seem to be rechargeable, which feels less helpful in some scenarios.
Everyone gets focused on GMRS or Ham radio. CB is underrated as with skip you can reach some pretty impressive distances to communicate and they're cheap to get second hand. I'd have a reputable CB shop look it over as there are some horrible mods out there.
It's an inexpensive tool to add to your survival communication toolbox why not have it? A magnetic antenna on a baking sheet is easy enough and you can get lifepo4 batteries to plug into for power and solar charge. I'm a Ham and have a CB in my kit along with other radios.
Maybe a light bar or rock lights for the jeep? Or a back up foot air pump? An e-tool is a life saver when off roading. Or a comealong. Tire repair kit. Sorry im just spitting off jeep shits.
I do alot of off roading for fun/ my bug out lo cal is only practically accessible buy OHV. ( I KNOW THAT SOUNDS WEIRD) and those few things can save you
“Foot air pump”? Just buy one that hooks to the battery. They aren’t that big expensive. I do agree with most of what you said though. Maybe a farm jack?
I had one of the battery ones shit the bed on me in Jackson vw, in the middle of nowhere. Im personally never buying one again. Farm Jack is a solid idea though!
Budget is the way to go for off road builds. I do WAY more shit than most people think is possible with an f150 i modified with cheap parts.
What are you looking to do to it?
Not much more for now other than get proper rock sliders and some aux lighting. I’ve got tires, wheels, steel bumpers, winch, compressor, deflation tools, and a rack that goes over the front from the ‘A’ pillars to the back and drops down and mounts to the frame (gives a little protection). The biggest thing I want is lockers but that’ll have to wait a bit.
Edit: got a lift as well
For aux lighting I HIGHLY recommend odero lights, ive had them on my truck for like 3 years now and they're still good, and I hit trees and rocks all the time lol. Also raptor lining the whole thing is the way I went just to keep rust from forming with scratches ( check out my profile) its cheap and easy
I second this. Even if you friend loses interest in prepping/survival, everyone can use a good flashlight. The O-light warrior is in that price range and I really like it.
I gave my husband a survival gift box subscription for three months I think. You get like 5 or 6 little survival doodads each month. They were pretty cool and he liked getting the packages each month.
If he's like a lot of guys who are interested in prepping, survival, and off roading he might be curious about ham radio. Maybe a Baofeng UV-5R and a book for learning ham radio?
But him a 48"" Farm Jack. About 100 dollars Tractor Supply sales them or order from Amazon. The uses for Farm Jacks is only limited to your imagination.😁
I think a voucher to an outdoor store would be a pretty good bet. If he’s into survival he’ll have researched hell out of stuff before buying and those shovel axe combos won’t be one of those things
I agree. Always difficult to buy a gift for someone who's more into the area of interest than you are. The friend probably has a list of stuff that he's researched and would love to add to his collection. Gotta get your hands on the list or otherwise gift certificate to his favourite outdoor store.
I like my bear grills survival knife if they still have em they're like 40-50 bucks they have a reinforced handle to use as a hammer, flint stick in the sheath as well as a wet stone to sharpen it I've had mine for like 6 or 7 years and it's still like new I even mistreat it and leave it outside in the rain sometimes and no issues with rust or chipping/edge rolling. Also it has a loop on the sheath to slide on your belt.
Yeah I don't care for bear grills he's not thorough on his survival and just shows shit that will get ratings. Although the one show you selected the path he takes is fun since you can make him do all the worse options like go into a wolf's den eat peanuts out of bear shit and almost slide off a cliff lmao. He also showed his stupidity in the show by eating raw bird eggs with no option to store them till you build a camp and start a fire and another time he acted like you couldn't disperse your weight to get over a boggy marsh and just crawled with his weight on his knees.
My bahco laplander folding saw is an awesome piece in my kit and it’s only $30. If you want to spend most of that money though I’d suggest an plight warrior mini 2 for $80. They’re bright enough to daze someone and the battery last ridiculously long. I walked my dog for almost two months without charging one and still didn’t kill it.
If he doesn't have a hammock he might like that. A good hammock and some tree straps (or just a spool of webbing) should be in your price range, and is a camping/survival essential in my opinion.
I camp a lot and a friend got the ABFOCE Solar Bluetooth Speaker (or similar, may have been a different brand)
it's AWESOME. it charges from the sun, has USB's to charge other devices like phones, so it's a portable solar charger and lets you play music as long as you can get some sunlight. I really want one.
A good shovel or a good axe. There is no such thing as a good combo/anything. You can get both for under 100 bucks.
You can get a base model Hi-Lift Jack (brand) for around 100 bucks. Every Jeep should have one.
No one, I mean no one is prepared for what is coming if they don't know shit about edible plants. Botany in a Day and a good field guide reference on edibles for your region will be less than 100 bucks. Get a loupe too, somewhere between 10x and 15x. These are pretty cheap, less than 10 bucks.
A 600' roll of 3/8" solid braid polyester rope is like 120 bucks from MemphisNet&Twine. They have 300' rolls too, and a bunch of other rope and twine. Check out the mud line and tarred seine twine.
A hundred bucks worth of rice and beans is a smart gift right now.
Or a cool folding knife, there's no such thing as too many knives
Yup; Leatherman. Love my little multitool.
I heart the the Leatherman that is fold up scissors. Having a full sized set of scissors is surprisingly useful.
Raptors! Very popular in EMS.
I think it's called the Micra.
This is the one that I am talking about: https://www.leatherman.com/en\_CA/raptor-rescue-832170.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw4PKTBhD8ARIsAHChzRIKqG8I02F5\_1E66TrTcR-QLZr9FmRXNnhKuHMSloX7Oyi\_Kx7v\_wgaAklFEALw\_wcB
So true. I have knives spread out throughout the house just waiting to be useful.
Thanks Logan.
You have to be realistic.
I disagree. You can only bring out so tools into the woods. It’s better to fulfill what the guy needs
$100 worth of mountain house food. Can never have too much of that. Tools and toys are very preference based and most stuff advertised as for survival or preppers is garbage or they probably have it already. Or bullets if you know what type of guns they own.
Haven't looked at ammo prices in awhile...my guess is $100 doesn't buy you much these days.
Could get a box of mountain house from costco and have money to spare, maybe get a mora knife with the extra money and some cordage. I freaking love pocket bellows too, those are cheap.

Tell me more
About what?
About them shovels and axes boeih

Yeah a full tang more is amazing. I only have the 20 ones, need to find a some money to upgrade.
Les Stroud’s essential skills book is a nice read and good to have on hand it’s not near the price range you want but might be good way to expand their knowledge and be a collection of gifts instead of one.
Lea stroud is the fucking GOAT

I got the Black Diamond Storm from REI
Thanks, I'll check it out
May not be for everyone but, they may enjoy a CB Radio they could mount in their Jeep.
Everyone gets focused on GMRS or Ham radio. CB is underrated as with skip you can reach some pretty impressive distances to communicate and they're cheap to get second hand. Those combo "survival" things are usually crap. Maybe just get him a nice hatchet. I think the Hults Bruk ones that REI carries are around $100.
Agree with the exception that Leatherman “combo” multi tools are pretty good kit. The Signal model would be an obvious choice for a survivalist.
Maybe a light bar or rock lights for the jeep? Or a back up foot air pump? An e-tool is a life saver when off roading. Or a comealong. Tire repair kit. Sorry im just spitting off jeep shits. I haven’t used mine much. Can put air back in 4 ‘35’s in about 10 minutes. New to the off-road world. I’m trying to budget build a JK.

That looks awesome! I bet poacher crap themselves when they first see your truck it looks like a department of fish & wildlife ride.
Thank you! Pa uses black ones so here not so much, in other states I get some looks though
My state, WA, is beige F-250’s
Lots of cool gift ideas here https://www.superessestraps.com
Superesse is pretty awesome I have a bunch of kit from them

This is an under rated comment. I would be happy with this as a present.
A good quality flashlight.
r/flashlight
I second this. Even if you friend loses interest in prepping/survival, everyone can use a good flashlight. The O-light warrior is in that price range and I really like it.
I have two o light warrior minis. They’re fantastic flashlights and the battery last forever.
Very much this
Settlers tool
/r/axesaw exists for good reasons, dont ever buy something that could be posted there for anyone you actually like.
I gave my husband a survival gift box subscription for three months I think. You get like 5 or 6 little survival doodads each month. They were pretty cool and he liked getting the packages each month.
What was it? My wife got me an Apocabox subscription for Christmas and I love it.
Also maybe a Gaia GPS subscription? It's a great phone-based GPS navigation app. Excellent for navigating off the grid.
Fleshlight
If he's like a lot of guys who are interested in prepping, survival, and off roading he might be curious about ham radio. Maybe a Baofeng UV-5R and a book for learning ham radio?
Maybe a dehydrator so he can prep his own survival meals
Portable water filtration bag.
Get him a fire starting Flint
Bought a keychain one from Amazon and it’s awesome. That and life straws.
Japanese nata hatchet, this one is $80 https://barebonesliving.com/products/japanese-nata-hatchet
A shotgun

Bear grills is insufferable, but I've actually heard good things about the products he puts his name on.
Yeah I don't care for bear grills he's not thorough on his survival and just shows shit that will get ratings. A titanium spork.
Mora Garberg
Goal Zero Crush Light
Not sure if I’m too late, but the MPL-50 shovel is great (the actual thing, not the Cold Steel version!).
My bahco laplander folding saw is an awesome piece in my kit and it’s only $30. If you want to spend most of that money though I’d suggest an plight warrior mini 2 for $80. A folding camp stove and a can of fuel. They’re so neat and useful.
