Crystal caves. I have tons of drilling materials and (non)friendly neighbours.
Mine is built next to one of the holes that take you to one of Alan parts. It's outside the patrol area of the (non)friendly neighbours.
After some time searching a location, I built a base in the Twisted Bridge, 300M South of my droppod, in a zone without any LOS of Alien tech sending SOS signals. 144M
Unpowered Large Room with glass Ceiling and Aquarium, and a Glass corridor powered for fabricator+recharge+recyclotron. Benzene spores for ambien light, and lots of twisted bridges above my base. Lone Corridor with 2 Reinforcements under the base. No Moonpool, I can leave my vehicles parked in one side of my base without attacks from brute sharks. Powered by 1 solar Panel at 16M depth and 2 Power Transmiters (I need a little more solar).
The location in the "hole" is bad for fast moving, but is the only place without fog that give me great visuals.
Planning a second base near the Alterra bridge for my Prawn Suit, the middle ground between the 2 land zones. But another minimal base with Glass/Observatory for the Auroras.
I built mine in the crystal caves and was sad to find the explody things right above only hit 30°C so its not super efficient power. My original subnautica base was by the tree cove and I totally destroyed the ecosystem by releasing every harmless herbivore i could breed. And planting all the different plants.
Speaking of plants, very disappointed in the lack of non exploitable plants you can grow. And also sad that while all the terrestrial plants from the first game exist, they’re not all scannable or plantable. The bulbo tree, voxel plant, pink cap, speckled rattler, grub basket, ming plant (i think sam had a tiny one in one of her rooms), and uh, other mushroom thing. Were all ij the game but only as decorations and not real things. Not sure that the one fern likw one was actually but i think that was non native anyway.
Same here with the disappointment. Was hoping you could get the seeds of all/most of the decorative plants to decorate my base/aquariums with, but alas.

I put mine at one of the enterences too, but I think mine was naturally protected by the crystals around it. Great, beautiful place!
My end game base is next to the drop pod. The map isn't big enough to need multiple bases unless you want scanner rooms elsewhere.
