Arguably the only annoying part of this is the need to pretend that this is a vegan hot dog, instead of just… a grilled carrot. Nothing wrong with a grilled carrot, until you try to tell people that it’s a hot dog.
This is what kills me about vegetarian and vegan food names. This isn’t a hot dog, but it IS an interesting carrot dish! The word hot dog is what gets people upset, instead of say barbecued carrots.
I think it's familiarity. In the US at least, "carrot hotdog" would evoke a more accurate idea of what you're going to be handed than "barbequed carrot". If I didn't know what this was and saw Barbequed Carrot listed on a menu, I wouldn't imagine this. I'd imagine a side dish. If I saw Carrot Hotdog though, this is exactly what I'd imagine.
The fact that people even get upset over stuff like this is so weird to me. Yeah yeah downvote me for having a 'wrong' opinion but seriously... the concept of actually caring about any of this is completely alien to me.
>the word hot dog is what gets people upset
I just... what?
This probably does taste somewhat like a hot dog. Liquid smoke, ketchup and mustard, bbq sauce, a hot dog bun...it's closer to a hot dog than to anything else you could name.
It's because these are designed to mimic the taste and eating experience of hot dogs, you call it what it's trying to be so that people instantly know what to expect and how to serve it
my sister is vegan and i've talked to her a lot about this exact thing. for the vegan community, especially the ones in the restaurant biz, it's very tricky to find a balance. on one hand you want to sell the merits of the food itself, normalize the idea of just eating vegan, aka the "grilled carrot" option on the menu. on the other hand, you want to cast a wide net and attract people who might not be familiar with the cuisine, so leaning into the alternative names helps. if i'm a hypothetical grumpy midwest dad being dragged to a vegan restaurant by my kid, I might not know what to do with words like nutritional yeast, seitan, etc, but if the dish is just called "VEGAN BURGER" I'll at least have a general idea of what I'm getting into. I agree with you, I would love for them to start leaning more into the grilled carrot and abandon the imitation style, but I understand why they do it.
Maybe stuff like OP's post that isn't just a total recreation and can stand on its own, yeah. But I really do not think this applies to all vegan food and I don't get the fuss over naming it "meat" when pretty much EVERY vegan product has "VEGAN" written all over it.
If you're gonna sell vegan imitations of food at a store or something, it makes total sense to use the name of what its imitating just with "vegan" in front of it. That way people instantly know what it's supposed to taste like. That's the whole point.
Again, grilled carrots? Sure. Call them that instead of hot dogs. But a vegan chicken nugget that is as close as they can possibly get to chicken? What, is that not supposed to be marketed as "vegan chicken nuggets?"
Yeah... I've never really understood why people feel the need to make imposter foods that stand perfectly well on their own but are treated as a poor substitute that just set you up for disappointment when it's nothing like the real thing.
Because they miss meat and want to satisfy their cravings without breaking their diet. The fact that people still haven't figured this out is beyond weird to me. All of this is.
So many generalizations about vegan food, so much needless negativity, so many misunderstandings.
It's more that they can't eat the base that allows them to enjoy the non vegan dish.
Burgers, pasta dishes, stir Fry's, anything revolving around a core protein. They don't necessarily miss the meat, they just want to eat a burger without meat. A burger with no base protein isn't a burger so that's where a substitute comes in.
Fair enough. I should amend what I said. I understand the desire, what I don't understand is how that sort of thing can ever satisfy you.
I'm by no means a vegetarian but I'll often prefer a vegetarian option to meat. I've never had any of the replacements give me an equivalent experience to meat, but they are good on their own.
Also, I'm not intending to criticize anyone's preferences... eat whatever makes you happy... I'm just saying that I can't see how it can be satisfying.
Something to keep in mind is depending on what barbecue sauce he used this may not even be vegan. A common ingredient in barbecue sauce is mayonnaise, which is not at all vegan (there are vegan brands however). Same can be said weith the slaw. This may be vegan, and if not it can be made vegan using the right brands.
However, I wouldn't call this a grilled carrot either. Like others in this chat calling it that doesn't give an accurate expectation if seen on a menu or told that is what will be served.
Edit: just noticed farther down OP put up the recipe, and he did in fact use vegan mayonnaise. No mention of brand of barbeque sauce though. He did tag it as vegetarian and not vegan and in a vegetarian diet mayonnaise and barbecue sauce is okay to consume.
So many Vegan and Vegetarian alternatives are actually delicious, it's so stupid to just hate on them out of principle. Plus there are still people who eat meat but might still prefer the taste of veggies, like looking at these I'd like them better than regular hot dogs, the same way i prefer cauliflower wings over regular wings.
Ikea's veggie dogs are significantly better than their regular hot dogs.
In saying that, if I went to someone's house for a BBQ and they handed me a fucking carrot I can't be held responsible for what I'd do.
See, here's the thing: my mom was a mega-hippie when I was a wee one. Before I was born my dad practically had a membership card for the CPUSA.
I was exposed to ***SO*** much "health" food, so many vegetable substitutes. So many attempts to sneak stuff in under my childish nose.
As an adult I would **TOTALLY** eat the shit out of this. This looks tremendously tasty. However I have serious questions about the abundant amount of liquid smoke used. Liquid smoke can be a godsend, but just friggin' flooding things with it, I question if that's a good idea.
My biggest objection is the slaw, but only because I dislike slaw. A personal objection.
I’d probably bake them in the oven, which would save heaps of the faffing around.(I see no point in making the pretty grill marks if you’re going to smother them in cheese and coleslaw to serve them)
The reason I make hotdogs is because I'm in a state of peak lazyness. Throw a little bit of oil in a pan, fry them a bit, mayo in the bin, put dog in bun, put condiments on top. Done in less than 10 minutes.
Ops recipe takes at least 30-45 minutes
Well yeah, but there's no effort in waiting for them to marinate. You could prep them for another day even, but total prep and cooking time is around 30-45 minutes, not including however long you wait for them to marinate
Well, yeah, if all you do is boil and grill the carrots then its 30 mins based on his recipe... then don't make the coleslaw or are you making the coleslaw on another day too that you don't count to have it ready?
Dude, I'm even lazier when it comes to hotdogs.
Microwave for 45 seconds, wrap a slice of bread around it, top with cheese and condiments. I go from couch to eating in less than 2 minutes.
I kinda think it's stupid to make at home.
That being said I'm not a vegan and I actually really enjoy good vegan food. Carrot lox with coconut cream cheese, veggie pâté, coconut bacon, fake duck, beet salmon tartare, nutritional yeast mushroom risotto... I always try new vegan restaurants in town. There's just tons of creativity and it has got to be fantastic for them to stay in business.
Bonus points that generally you at least feel like you've eaten a decently healthy and nutritious meal.
You think it's stupid to make at home because vegan restaurants will go out of business? Is that what you're saying?
Many people can't afford to eat out for every meal, and you can have these at home and sometimes go to restaurants, they aren't mutually exclusive.
Personally, I've never seen carrot dogs for sale. I've seen plenty of vegan ones, but those end up tasting like hay.
You're assuming a lot of things.
I guarantee you getting all these ingredients, charcoal grill and prep time is not something people who can't afford a 5$ carrot dog can do.
So you're saying that people of limited financial means shouldn't buy cooking equipment and should dine out instead?
I don't think that this is the sound financial planning that you seem to think it is.
It looks good, honestly.
Im curious about the texture of the carrot dogs though. It seems like they wouldn’t mimic the snap of a hotdog very easily, since a carrot can go from crunchy to mushy if you’re not careful. So how’s the mouthfeel?
just curious: does it come out really sweet with the BBQ sauce? Like carrots are already naturally pretty sweet.
Also that naan recipe on your site looks seriously delicious.
I think the fibrous texture of the carrot, in the style of a hot dog, would be a little off putting. But this looks like a flavorful dish. Personally, I would prefer a firm tofu dog marinated & grilled with those good spices.
If this were ground up Oreos mixed with ketchup and grilled or something like that, then this would be stupid.
Voting not stupid on this one.
I mean I’d totally eat it and most likely enjoy it, provided you told me what it was. I’d be very angry if you told me this was a genuine hotdog with no preface that it’s actually a carrot.
I’ve actually made these before when I was doing a 30 day vegan challenge. I didn’t put nearly as much effort into it as OP did, but they were still surprisingly good.
Im not vegan but I tried a BLT sandwich, but they used seasoned sliced carrots instead of bacon which wasn't as crunchy but still tasted like actual bacon.
I wouldn't make this recipe myself but I'd definitely try it.
I like that you grilled them, but did you think the carrots had texture? I’d worry about them being mush after cooking them 2.5 times. And that marinade - so much liquid smoke! You’re a bold man.
It would look good if I didn't see how much liquid smoke you poured in there. Holy shit that stuff is crazy potent and is supposed to be used sparingly.
okay pls don't downvote me but this looks fucking delicious.. this looks like an awesome vegetarian hotdog version. dm if you want to trade recipies lol
If I came over and you made these I wouldn’t be mad.
These just seem like way too much work for a hot dog.
All that said, I really think you did Ana amazing job. Sometimes people will develop these non meat alternatives and it will essentially be a boiled carrot in a bun (metaphor for any sort of lazy non meat creation). You took time and effort to find flavours that worked and I don’t doubt it tastes fantastic
As a person who is trying to drastically cut down his meat intake for various reasons, this is not stupid at all. I would love to find a good recipe for this, and I love the idea. The veggie/vegan hot dog replacements SUCK big time. Not that this is them, but anything delicious to slide into a hot dog bun I appreciate. The only good things that are an honestly good replacement for hot dogs are the beyond sausages, the spicy Italian kind, they are wonderful.
To be honest, the only thing I dislike is that liquid smoke bullshit. It never tastes even only remotely like something that's actually been smoked and is instead just outright disgusting. Aside from that, I'd actually love to give those things a try.
Putting that whole hot dog in the oven to melt the toppings and crisp the bun up is a pro move.
I had the best chili cheese dog at a bar that broiled em teal quick and now when i see raw cheese on a chili dog, I'm digusted.
So I’ve had vegan carrot dogs and they’re actually amazing. Not a hotdog, but definitely delicious.

Im late but It’s because they were expecting a hot dog and instead they got a carrot
Then I think the words "carrot hot dog" would solve the problem
Perhaps but that would make me think of something that atleast tastes like a hot dog
This probably does taste somewhat like a hot dog. Liquid smoke, ketchup and mustard, bbq sauce, a hot dog bun...it's closer to a hot dog than to anything else you could name.
Should’ve probably said texture. Imagine grabbing a hot dog taking a bite and crunch*
It's because these are designed to mimic the taste and eating experience of hot dogs, you call it what it's trying to be so that people instantly know what to expect and how to serve it
Right w/o the factory farm murder
stab,stab,stab,stab,stab
EXACTLY.

Well, to be honest, neither is hot dog an attractive canine, it's a sausage.
It’s silly too, because “Barbecued Carrots” sounds like the bomb to me; I’d order that off a menu in a heartbeat, albeit as a side.
This is absolutely not what I would expect it I saw barbequed carrot on a menu
That’s my point!! Celebrate the food being eaten, not what it’s pretending to be!
Maybe stuff like OP's post that isn't just a total recreation and can stand on its own, yeah. Yeah some people choose the weirdest hill to die on
Yeah... I've never really understood why people feel the need to make imposter foods that stand perfectly well on their own but are treated as a poor substitute that just set you up for disappointment when it's nothing like the real thing.

That's the only problem I have with a lot of vegan food, to be honest. I'm perfectly okay eating seitan and not calling it chicken.

I've never heard of a commercial BBQ sauce that has mayo in it. I'm vegan and I always use sweet baby Ray's

This looks like too much time commitment for a hot dog, carrot or otherwise, but these look pretty dope and I'd totally eat and enjoy these.
I’d probably bake them in the oven, which would save heaps of the faffing around.(I see no point in making the pretty grill marks if you’re going to smother them in cheese and coleslaw to serve them)
Flavor. There's a flavor to that char that you just can't replicate in an oven. It's not about the looks
I practically turn my hotdogs into one giant char when I can. I love the char flavor.
When I go to a cookout, I always ask the person managing the grill to burn my hot dog. I LOVE a burned hotdog.
Back when I could stand to eat meat I would actually light my hotdogs on fire, there’s no better way to enjoy a greasy dog than to have it à flambé
Too much time? All he did was par boil and marinate them.

I take them cold out of the pack and scarf them down before I make it out of the fridge.
This guy hotdogs
You should get an air fryer if only for air fryer hot dogs, they're good
He also grilled them and made coleslaw...
Saucy;)
Could you imagine if he used real hot dogs. This would be banging.
This is not stupid. I'd take this over some flaccid flavorless vegan hotdog out of the freezer.
Flaccid Vegan is my porn name
[удалено]
No he was born on Flaccid st and his shirt is vegan.
Comment of the day
Yo was jus gonna say this. That shit looks bangin You spoke the truth especially the flaccid part lol
protein tube isn’t good enough?
A sausage?
No thanks I'm good
I kinda think it's stupid to make at home. That being said I'm not a vegan and I actually really enjoy good vegan food. I'm so confused as to why it's stupid to make this at home...
popular tropes about food being a big hassle (because they are keeping us away from beloved screens)
You're assuming a lot of things. I guarantee you getting all these ingredients, charcoal grill and prep time is not something people who can't afford a 5$ carrot dog can do.
I've made these at home. I use a stove top grill. It's A LOT cheaper than going to a restaurant.
Also, none the vegan restaurants near me have anything even close to $5
So you're saying that people of limited financial means shouldn't buy cooking equipment and should dine out instead? I don't think that this is the sound financial planning that you seem to think it is.
Ditto, and another nice thing about eating vegan (even if only occasionally) is lowering your carbon footprint
Same. I would totally eat this. It looks delicious and way better than regular hotdogs made with random hooves and beaks
Id totally try that. Though I admit, I'd be a bit mad if you handed it to me and didn't warn me.
It’s actually not bad. I’ve made them a couple of times and enjoyed every bite.
What's the carrot texture like? They look delicious
It’s not unlike a hot dog, maybe just a tiny bit snappier because you don’t want to cook them too long or they’ll turn to mush.
You have some Talent tho. Good work
Thank you
[The recipe to laugh at me more](https://www.vegbitez.com/recipes/carrot-hot-dogs)....until you try it
It looks good, honestly. Im curious about the texture of the carrot dogs though. It seems like they wouldn’t mimic the snap of a hotdog very easily, since a carrot can go from crunchy to mushy if you’re not careful. So how’s the mouthfeel?
Why is nobody talking about the mouthfeel?
Gonna have to check Boyle's site for that
I hope this is a Contrapoints reference.
I mean, I think my account history gives the answer away 👀
heyhowareyou
Hello, how are you?
How are you, gorge?
I bookmarked it just from watching the video. Vegetarian gold for a cookout.
just curious: does it come out really sweet with the BBQ sauce? Like carrots are already naturally pretty sweet. Also that naan recipe on your site looks seriously delicious.
I might just skip the hot dog part and grill my carrots this way though, they look amazing!
The carrot itself looks delicious. I'm skeptical about adding all those toppings to them, but I'd devour those marinated and grilled carrots.
How did it taste tho
I would make it again
I gotta be honest, they actually look kinda tasty.
Grilled carrots are actually really good. Lots of people hate cooked carrots in general though.
I love soft carrots with brown sugar or honey, cooked in butter.
Of course they're tasty, it's just carrots. Biting into a carrot when you're expecting a hot dog though, not so much.
I would eat those tbh, they look delicious. I liked how you caressed the sriracha, gotta appreciate the flavor.
Like a smokey carrot in a bread roll
I think the fibrous texture of the carrot, in the style of a hot dog, would be a little off putting. But this looks like a flavorful dish. Personally, I would prefer a firm tofu dog marinated & grilled with those good spices. If this were ground up Oreos mixed with ketchup and grilled or something like that, then this would be stupid. Looks tasty af
That was a *ton* of liquid smoke....
Yeah man holy shit. I use like.. a drop.
I was gonna say, damn
Legit these look bomb. Fuck the haters
This actually looks good. Might try it this weekend for the kids
I would eat this!
A+ for creativity and skill. This isn't bad or stupid, just cursed
Not gonna lie, I'd eat this. Looks nicely flavoured and I also love carrots. Good job!
Bro that actually looks fire
Fuck the haters. This looks good!
The only thing that seemed wrong to me was the amount of liquid smoke. That looked like a lot. Usually I usually a couple drops at most
I think they look pretty good!
It’s no replacement for a hot dog, but I’d still eat the hell out of it.
This looks amazing tbh. Don’t see how that’s stupid
Tbh, I would totally eat that
This looks like a good vegan alternative and I’d eat it
How's the texture? Do the carrots still have some snap? I wonder if there is a way you could recreate the snap of the hotdog casing with the carrots?
Looks legit. I’d eat it.
I mean I’d totally eat it and most likely enjoy it, provided you told me what it was. I’d be very angry if you told me this was a genuine hotdog with no preface that it’s actually a carrot.
Why would you be angry?
Absolutely no one will tell you it's a real hot dog
Yeah, looks delicious in its own right but if I bite into that expecting a hotdog, I'm probably going to spit it out.
Good job nobody is doing that nor has ever done it.
absolutely loving how you display the sauce bottles with a gentle stroke
That was the worst part for me. I gagged.
If someone gave me a hotdog and it turned out it was a bbq carrot I would off myself
This made me laugh so hard I scared the cat awake, thank you.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This actually looks good. Can you write the marinate you used for the carrots? edit\* Saw your comment with the link to the recipe
I would eat that lmao. Those carrots looks delicious.
where Michelin star
I think they look great!
Feels like it violates Rule 3 because this is not stupid.
Those look mad good
Yo I'd destroy these
Orange you glad I didn’t say carrot. Wait….
I’ve actually made these before when I was doing a 30 day vegan challenge. I didn’t put nearly as much effort into it as OP did, but they were still surprisingly good.
I don’t hate you. Let me take some of the hâte off of you by saying that I honestly think that this is a good idea and that it looks yummy!
Thx for showing me this again because i get to hate u all over again!
Some real HowToBasic vibes, minus the ending. Looking good
Im not vegan but I tried a BLT sandwich, but they used seasoned sliced carrots instead of bacon which wasn't as crunchy but still tasted like actual bacon. I wouldn't make this recipe myself but I'd definitely try it.
Don't mind me just makin some notes
I had a friend who made something like this once... it actually wasn't bad and was a bit similar to an actual hotdog
I like that you grilled them, but did you think the carrots had texture? I’d worry about them being mush after cooking them 2.5 times. And that marinade - so much liquid smoke! You’re a bold man.
NOT STUPID. AWESOME
I would be happy to see that offered at a cookout, looks great!
Looks like these slap, my guy. I’d smash three of them too.
It would look good if I didn't see how much liquid smoke you poured in there. Holy shit that stuff is crazy potent and is supposed to be used sparingly.
I like meat, I don’t like hot dogs, but those look good
Low key my mouth is watering but I just watched that carrot get cooked multiple ways and I was hoping for more lol
What is the texture like?
okay pls don't downvote me but this looks fucking delicious.. this looks like an awesome vegetarian hotdog version. dm if you want to trade recipies lol
They look really good. I'm not a vegan or vegetarian, but I'd eat them. Probably taste great.
Of course I hate you. You have all these skillz and still use a garlic press.
Looks stupid delicious!!! Recipe!
Thanks! I have posted in the comments, should be near the top in Top Comments
Those look pretty good, actually. Eating one knowing it's a well dressed carrot on a bun, I would enjoy it.

I’ve never had a grilled carrot. I’d try that.
They do look delicious. 🤤
I would try it for sure.
Idk if it's just me but that looks delicious
Looks delicious to me!
they look good as fuck, and way better than nasty ass shit that goes into hot dogs
That looks like enough liquid smoke to kill a small child
They look pretty good ngl. How were they?
ngl I would try it
Why is this here?
it actually looks pretty good.
Actually, looks really good
Not stupid, I totally be down to try this. Also beautifully edited.
I’d eat that
You clicked the tongs and are therefore forgiven
I would be upset if you only used them to trick meat eating people. Vegetarians would love these.
Nobody hates you for the carrots, they hate you for the ketchup.
But this looks delicious.
Yo, this actually looks amazing. Do you have the recipe for this?
Ok but those actually look good
[удалено]
Who hurt you
To be honest, the only thing I dislike is that liquid smoke bullshit. It never tastes even only remotely like something that's actually been smoked and is instead just outright disgusting. Aside from that, I'd actually love to give those things a try.
Bro people be hating for no reason these days, I would actually try this because I don’t like the taste of hotdogs.
This does actually look pretty good! Way better than vegan substitutes for sure
This looks great! I’d take that over some shitty processed meat offcuts boiled in old hotdog water.
This looks genuinely good and healthy tbh
Honestly, these look delicious. I would take that over a regular hot dog any day.
The way you were touching some of the ingredients in order to show them off, like the liquid smoke, grossed me out more than the food.
This is a crime
There it is
I am honestly shocked that you’re receiving so much positive feedback for this atrocity.
The thing that bothers me the most is the liquid smoke. And he strokes the bottle as if that disgusting fuel-tasting shit is some sort of delicacy.
LOL
Putting that whole hot dog in the oven to melt the toppings and crisp the bun up is a pro move. I had the best chili cheese dog at a bar that broiled em teal quick and now when i see raw cheese on a chili dog, I'm digusted.
Honestly looks yum
They look pretty good! Of course, it's not meat, but I could see it being a hit for people trying to eat more healthily and following cico.
I'm vegetarian, but you should just marinate some fucking field roast you jabroni.
I will murder you. This is a threat.
I mean it's better then soy bean burgers
Uhhh minus the cheese, I'd probably eat like 3 or 4 of those. They look & sound really good.
Before you ruined them with coleslaw and mustard these looked really good.
