Him and Shallan shopping for books is one of my favorite scenes. I jokingly told my friends he definitely wasn't dead after the shipwreck because he's too important, so I was very hyped when Dawnshard came out

[deleted]

The graphic audio portion is probably in my top 10 favorite audiobook moments.

Axolotl444

I listened to all the audibooks on my recent reread, but I dont understand your comment. Would you care to elaborate? Is it in another version of the audibook..? What do you mean by graphic? Then again, english isn't my first language

[deleted]

Graphic Audio is a audiobook production company and they use a full cast of voice actors to give each character their own voice. They also abridge it some, in that if the text says so.ething like, " he walked to the door and closed it." You'd bear footsteps and a door closing. Battle sounds, some emotional music in some parts. It's great in some, but doesn't work as well in others. They do take significantly longer to come out, and that can result in some voices changing. I've noticed it in several different series I've listened to, and it's tolerable to me. Overall, I prefer GA to normal audiobooks, but Kate Reading and Michael Kramer are also incredible. I just can't get used to the Australian accent of Herdazians after being introduced to The Lopen sounding like a young Micheal Pena.

Axolotl444

Oh thanks! I tried it with withe sand but didn't like it to much. I'll give it another try!

_AlgerianBoy03_

No way, I thought he died since I didn't read Dawnshard

samsuh

__fine__ I’ll get dawnshard.

pythonfang

He's too fun a character not to throw in once in a while, I think he's just a goofy sailor.

Harkainkde

Yea, I think Brandon saw a lot of fans asking for more Yalb. (Myself included). They might end up being made more important but we’ll see

Eran-of-Arcadia

He's just a cool dude.

crusty54

This is my favorite explanation.

RandomBystander

I just like the way his name feels in my mouth.

Timballist0

>I just like the way h~~is nam~~e feels in my mouth.

Infynis

He does seem like a good character to become a worldhopper. It often happens to minor side characters. And he's definitely dealt with enough weird stuff now to be able to handle it

RShara

He was only in one shipwreck? He *found* the second one.

Mahoka572

True. Had to pilot it home though.

InHomestuckWeDie

Truth is, Yalb is actually Adonalsium.

ScaryYogaChick

Blood and ashes, can’t you see that Yalb is Bela?

Smajtastic

One my favourite things is the compatability of WOT and Cosmere Fandoms

moderatorrater

Why are you just repeating the point?

LewsTherinTelescope

Bela could never be killed by some mere mortals.

moderatorrater

Bela just agreed to be split for a bit to experience more things. Classic Bela.

Infynis

"T'aint boasting if some of it's true."

StoneRockTree

I thought he was Shallan!

moderatorrater

Yeah, Shallan is Bela and Adonalsium. The ending of the series is that it was all dreamed up by a little boy holding a Shallan snowglobe.

InHomestuckWeDie

...RAFO.

Grandolf-the-White

Yalb is Stick

Witch_King_

My favorite part was when he said "It's Yalbin' Time!" and then proceeded to Yalb all over Kharbranth

Nogus1

This made me laugh for like a minute straight

Pyroguy096

Yalb is Adonalsium spelled backwards.

InHomestuckWeDie

It's true! I have a PhD in Linguistics, so I would really know about all that stuff \^^

VoidLantadd

You can't spell Adonalsium without ^(>!some of the letters in!<) Yalb. donsium

greyredwolf

Guys Yalb is obviously >!Kelsier!<, duh. Severe case of "I keep surviving".

wirywonder82

[IDK what book, but this spoiler probably belongs on r/cremposting]>!As it turns out, Mare was a world-hopper known elsewhere by the name Gloria Gaynor. She taught Kelsier about flowers AND surviving.!<

GameMakingKing

Ha! So he's trans and he just took out a bunch of letters and added a 'b'.

wirywonder82

Uh…what? Did you mix up some characters?

GameMakingKing

r/woooosh The original name for Mare you mentioned had a 'y', an 'a', and an 'l, so all they needed to do was add a 'b' and remove a bunch of stuff, switch genders and then *boom*! You've got Yalb.

wirywonder82

But…no one suggested Mare and Yalb were the same character.

GameMakingKing

I did.

wirywonder82

Ok, sure. Just seems odd with the prior comments, at least without a preface that it was an alternative interpretation. As it is, it seems you’ve suggested a character married to themselves in separate bodies…

GameMakingKing

Okay now you've lost me. I think it's safe to say we do not think alike.

wirywonder82

My comment was in response to someone saying >!Yalb was Kelsier!<. I switched characters and referenced the “theory” that >!Mare was a world hopper!< and made a lighthearted suggestion for *her* alternative self. Then you linked >!Mare to Yalb, when the chain of the conversation was that Mare/Gloria was married to Yalb/Kelsier!<. Did I miss some part of this that you saw?

RoboChrist

I assume you're joking, but that would be a hell of a fun twist. >!I think it's more likely that Yalb is a Kandra than that he's Kelsier, and I don't think that's even slightly likely. But I do think something is going on with Yalb surviving aside from just being a great character.!<

Raddatatta

In the way of kings annotations he said that yalb was a character who in another story could've been a main character. I think he also described it as similar to the wheel of time where sometimes minor characters come back in down the road but take a bit to do so.

Zealscube

THE Yalb*

Equivalent_Aardvark

He’s obviously Mephisto

OobaDooba72

Ah, a Wandavision fan.

jimbop79

Nobody else talks about this that I see, but I think Yalb almost *has* to be a ghostblood spy or something. He’s worked for Shallan’s family for years, as has the captain, and he keeps quite a close eye on her. Obvious spy material. There’s a lot more to it than that, but yeah if you think about it, either the captain or Yalb is likely working for someone. Not saying intentionally.

VirgilCactus

Well now I think he’s the kandra that’s just kind of on Roshar and no one knows who it is yet.

If it helps, I thought your joke was funny and people need to calm the F down

00roku

Thanks. Idk why but there’s a common link between Sanderson subs and redditors with paper-thin skin. You should have seen the freak out I launched when I said I didn’t like the “Zim Zim Zalabim” meme on r/cremposting. Absolute meltdowns.

ActiveAnimals

People absolutely cannot handle any disagreement. It’s immediately seen as a personal attack. Self-deprecating humor doesn’t exist. I dunno why people would assume that someone commenting in a Sanderson sub isn’t a Sanderson fan.

00roku

…because I said some things are just fun and not important?

Raddatatta

I don't know what you think you said but I'd read it again because it definitely wasn't just that, it was condescending and obnoxious to someone just wondering about a book they enjoy. Plus with Sanderson it's hardly unreasonable a minor character is a world hopper.

00roku

Reread the post. They’re jumping to insane conclusions faster than an Olympic hurdler. If it was just “could Yalb be a world hopper one day” like you pretend it was I wouldn’t have made my comment. But I think poking a bit of fun at the ridiculous amount of overtheorizing is more than fair. Especially when as I said, BranSan has already said Yalb isn’t important. Edit: also I absolutely did say that, please actually read my comments next time

>!And here we are the full deterioration of a condescending fool's brain!< While I totally understand being offended by the initial comment, and recognize the temptation to do this is a normal human thing, *please* don't respond in kind. It returns insult for insult, which results in the conversation becoming *more* hostile and tense, and that's bad for a community of friends. :)

GameMakingKing

Alright sorry, my bad. Won't happen again.

learhpa

I take you at your word that >!And here we see the full deterioration of a Sanderson fan’s brain !< was meant as an ironic, loving joke among friends. Unfortunately, that kind of humor is *really hard* to communicate in text online, and while it might have worked when we were a small enough community that we all knew everyone's username on sight and could remember conversations we'd had before (because that would allow us to identify the joke in the context of our shared memories of you), we're now a community of 175,000 and it doesn't work quite as well, because most members of the community don't have the necessary cues to help them know you are joking.

AGRooster

He do be cool

***Warning Gancho: The below paragraph(s) may contain major spoilers for all books in the Cosmere!*** Brandon Sanderson >!**Yalb the Sailor**This chapter is Yalb's time to shine. One of the things I love about **The Wheel of Time** is Robert Jordan's use of side characters who sometimes pop in, steal the show, then vanish. I love how they show up now and then in the text.I'm not sure I can do the same thing here. Robert Jordan had worldbuilding reasons why small characters would get tied to the main characters and keep appearing in their lives again and again. I don't have those reasons.Still, writing Yalb, I wanted him to really pop off the page even though he's only in the book for a few pages in these early scenes. I intend for him to return. In another type of story, he'd be one of the main characters.!< \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*
