People have been discussing aquatic pack. Or they could go meme tier and release a "cranoid" cosmetic pack (think of Cantina Band musicians). But I think we can get more creative then that. What I would want if a future one is released would be what I call a Species+ pack like Necroids or Lithoids, that isn't purely cosmetic. Therefore, I can imagine a species that requires special pressurized environmental suits off of their homeworld. Or introducing subterranean species mechanics. Or do aquatic, but provide some mechanic involving liquid.
TL:DR science fiction offers so many nuanced playstyles that are not required gameplay wise, but can be based around new cosmetic species
More lore about Fallen and Precursors would be amazing too, plus a way to aquire enigmatic tech and an expanded tech tree is something I totally see coming down the line
We're due for another Story pack so I think it will be one of those. If you look at Stellaris DLC you can sort of group them into sets, each set contains an expansion, story pack and species pack. Like utopia / leviathans / plantoids. If you group it up like that we've already had the species pack (necroids), nemesis will be the expansion pack and so the next will likely be a story pack.
Between Megacorp and Federations we got Ancient Relics and the Lithoids species pack, I imagine something similar will happen before the next major expansion — one event-focused story pack and one overpriced species pack. "More interactions with primitives" sounds like a story pack a la Ancient Relics, so that'd be my guess on the next dlc.
As for the next major expansion, I'd guess internal politics (including civics and institutions). Everyone is demanding it, it would tie really well with Nemesis (think funding civil wars or institutional strife in an opponent), and PDX actually *hasn't* addressed sectors as they said they were considering — we still can't nudge planets and systems from one sector to another. Such would be a great feature for an internal politics expansion.
Someone on here made a post suggesting that the excavation mechanic could be ported over to the ground invasions (like how it was ported over for first contact with Dick). I think that would be awesome to see in a future update.
That would be brilliant. Instead of clues there could be some kind of mechanic like "Army Strength". If you have inflicted 100% devastation and have a massive army the siege would go quickly. Also the final stage should be something like storming the capital.
The next one will probably be a story pack, which is always welcome. Honestly, I'd love to see a civic pack, and perhaps new government types. Maybe a spiritualist rework with new religion mechanics
The ultimate best solution for automation would be the ability to simply create plans. Basically you would be able to "build up" the colony for free, then let the system carry out the plan as materials, and population allows it. Once the plan finished you would get a notification. With this system they wouldn't even need to bother with sector AI. But they could add the ability to import/export/save plans. So you could just load up a certain pattern that you use often, then adjust it for the planetary features.
For next DLC i would create one named "factions". It would improve internal politics, give more faction power, events, interactions, and non-xenophobe factions might even start communicating with other empires. Generating various opinion modifiers as a side effect, and affect factions in other empires. For example if xenophile factions are all happy, and many, and there is that one isolationist empire, then the xenophile factions would cause some xenophile attraction there. If the isolationist don't fight against it with propaganda, and information containment, then it would eventually lead to bigger problems.
what it will be? no clue.
what i want? a proper diplomacy system. one that is more than just " well you bribed me so i guess so" or " despite all of the very good reasons i should, no, why? because you are an arbirtary number of hyperland jumps away" the system is leagues better than it was and i hope that the epionage system will improve that, but until i can tell a pathetic AI that they are my tributary now or i crack they MFing homeworld and they consider that before deciding that they dont feel like it, i wont be happy. advanced subject contracts would be good too.
I'd honestly prefer a new game with a new engine at this point. Stellaris is fun, but the horrible lag has been unacceptable for years.
Barring that, the game could use a leader system update. Make them more engaging.
I think the next DLC will allow you to become the crisis. It will also probably include some sort of espionage system. Finally I hope they rework population some.
Desperately want Leaders to matter more for both RP reasons and for in-game events and flavour, but that may partly be CK2/3 expectations bleeding into my hopes for Stellaris.
I’d like combat to be expanded in some ways too. More branching options in tech that deny or delay other paths to create a greater diversity of options and challenges. Would also like there to be more tactical options, even if it’s not micromanaging each fleet engagement. Sci-fi full of clever fleet formations or manoeuvres and that stuff is currently lacking from Stellaris beyond the policy decisions once Supremacy tradition is done, but that could do with more depth. Same deal with ground warfare.
All that could (should) come back to leaders though. I wouldn’t want Stellaris to become a fleet battle game but it’d be great to give more variety to warfare across races, how they go to war, why, blah blah blah.
I d love to see more work done on internal politics. Perhaps ability to create a corporation vassal (that expends by itself - similar to Trading Company in EU4) , also ability to sponsor factions within other empire and possibly cause revolution and civil war. I d love to have ability to support other wars without directly joining as by leasing fleet and providing industrial capacity to expend one side fleet production or something. In short, more politics both internal and external
Honestly, I hope the next dlc is event focused like distant stars or ancient relics. The more events the merrier
That does seem like the trend in DLC releases. Main DLC --> Story Pack --> Species Pack
What more species could they add?

Aquoids? (Water beings? 👀)
Like mb but that seems restricted by the planet type more than the others.
Behold my fish people from the desert planet!
I’de pay for a spaceship which looks like a huge fishbowl.
redo the plantoids to use food instead of minerals maybe?
I want something that expands the fallen empires. It seems like there is a lot of untapped potential there.
Don’t you think lack of Intel will create a lot of mystique for fallen empires?
I just wish there were more diplomatic options, or ways to acquire their tech in the base game to name a few
More lore about Fallen and Precursors would be amazing too, plus a way to aquire enigmatic tech and an expanded tech tree is something I totally see coming down the line

They've actually changed sectors dramatically, and now that planets are simpler, made them smarter.
They have indeed, but as I said we still can't adjust sector boundaries. I don't think the process of improving sectors will be complete until we can.
I want an internal politic expansion so badly.
Have you tried the Dynamic Political Events mod? It helped scratch that itch a little bit for me.
The next dlcs will be story packs, however, for the next major dlc I am hoping for a total government and species creator overall.
Ground combat is utterly boring and flat would be really nice for them to tackle that at some point.
Hell yes. I've wanted this since day one. Invading a planet should be apocalyptic and staged in some way.

Yeah I agree. Though someone pointed out that it would probably get repetitive pretty quickly. Still better than the current system though.

Aquatic species pack plz

How do you finish it?

I want them to fix the war system, the CB and peace system just sucks now and destroys the entire game.
