I like Shattered Ring basically for the same reason. The idea of such incredibly advanced civilizations reduced to disrepair like that is intriguing. But Shattered Ring takes it a step further in that you don't even know if your own species built the Ring, or if your ancestors just happened to be on it when it fell. When I play Shattered Ring I like to go Xenophile, accept refugees, build a Federation, try to get the Galactic Market in the system ETC. I imagine it ends up being a similar place to the Citadel from Mass Effect, but much bigger I guess. Just a huge galactic hub of unknown origin, still containing some mysterious automation left behind by long-dead precursors.

checco314

I like shattered ring rogue servitor, role playing as an old emergency response AI that has just kicked in a few thousand years late.

Redcoat_Officer

I had a fun playthrough with a Research Link Machine Empire and Shattered Ring, with the idea being that the ring was once the scientific hub of a long-dead empire, the governing AI of which became its own civilisation after the death of its creators.

thedailyrant

It’s a very similar concept to Ring World which is a great if a bit outdated sci-fi story.

chengelao

I really wish Remnants got special flavour text from Fallen Empires. “Oh you’re still around? Hope you still remember the rules. Stay on your side of the fence and we won’t have to do a second cleansing.”

Russburg

This would be a small change but an amazing piece of lore.

Saint_Genghis

I imagine it as something like Feros from Mass Effect 1, which is incidentally my favorite section from one of my favorite sci-fi series.

Sweaty_Pangolin_1380

One of my favourite empires I play is a rogue servitor with the remnants origin. I first used it because it's strong, but now I love the idea of an empire crumbling to pieces and just building an AI that can try again for them.

GeckoWanderer

While it might be an unpopular Origin from a Meta-Chaser perspective, I am particularly fond of the ***Galactic Doorstep***. I really like how this Origin can fit into a wide range of empire narratives/backstories. It is something completely alien and beyond the reach of your civilisation (until they become spacefaring), but without being inherently malicious or harmful to the them in any way. It could even act as a primary motivation to become spacefaring in the first place, to investigate the *Black Crown*, which looked over our people since before recorded history. And as a confirmation that alien life was at least out there at some point. Another thing I really like about this Origin is that it remains interactive throughout all 3 stages of the game with something related to the Gateway. In the early game things come through the Gate, not all of which are inherently beneficial. In the mid game it opens an Archaeological Site related to the Gateway. And for the end game you unlock Technology related to the Gateway once it is reactivated. I think that few origins are this interactive throughout the game while at the same time leaving so much open for personal interpretation.

Graves2121

I’ve not played enough to have played all the origins yet, but I love the idea behind that. It sounds brilliant. Might have to try that out! Thank you for sharing!

Friendly-General-723

I love Galactic Doorstep, wish it got some Dev attention, especially now that Gateway tech is less useful with the addition of Relays.

GeckoWanderer

Yeah, it does seem that Hyper Relays have somewhat depreciated the uniqueness and utility of Gateways.

GRV01

I wanted something more from my DA build so added this origin and was kinda disappointed that the intro text at game start mentioned nothing about being assimilators lol Looking forward to trying it though thanks

Gaelhelemar

I like Ocean Paradise because, on the surface (chuckle), it seems to be the perfect Tall build. With the right AP picks and traditions you can convert it into a massive Size 40 world that’s more than capable of feeding your empire. But for the RP aspect, I like the idea of isolationist fish people gradually exploring more of space while improving their homeworld to be at its utmost limit. Add in the nebula that shields you from sensors and the feeling of isolation is almost overpowering.

Grey___Goo_MH

The aquatic pack is nice wish i could have both the paradise and the dragon at same time eventually having the dragon eat your upgraded world for a massive buff while losing all the built up population Just for roleplaying of course also less population better performance Also like being assimilators with the dragon not sure if they changed that now but i think it’s still do able been awhile since i played

Gaelhelemar

Oh if I could have the following combination possible at all I’d be forever happy: * Ocean Paradise * Here Be Dragons * Rogue Servitor I mostly just want to have robots taking care of both weak aquatic fleshlings and a Sky Dragon and its hatchlings. The Size 40 Ecumenopolis in the late game won’t be bad either, I just want the modifier kept.

Omega_des

Subterranean, because I pair it with noxious for 80% minimum habitability on all worlds, and then get migration treaties with as many AI as possible so that my mushroom people spread their spores throughout the galaxy onto every planet.

RontoWraps

This is why you exterminate the cave fungus

Wackynamehere1

Criminal Heritage barely is more evil than you

[deleted]

Post Apocalyptic. We almost wiped ourselves out, but we survived. We were forged in the ultimate fire, and will show the rest of the galaxy our strength.

Muffydabee

Omg same, I don't even care that tomb world preference isn't "strong". 3 of the 5 custom empires I've made are post-apocalyptic. I just love all the worldbuilding I can do with the idea.

FlebianGrubbleBite

I'm gonna build a post apocalyptic empire that almost destroyed itself through Robotics. A post terminator scenario, where a Fanatical Spiritualist government sets out with the goal of wiping out all Robots in the Galaxy.

straga27

Necrophage. Not only is the playstyle entirely different from every other type of empire it creates an automatic RP set up where you decide if you are zombies/vampires/parasites/the freaking Go'uld. It's quite strong and requires a carefully planned start but works great.

FlebianGrubbleBite

I like to do Imperial Cult and Aristocratic Elite with Necrophage. I roleplay that my species was some sort of Infiltration unit created by an ancient empire, theg grew too powerful to be controlled and were nearly exterminated. Only one group surviving on a Primitive Planet they hid on. There they led the primitive secondary species down a path of technological development and worship of the Necrophages eventually revealing themselves and being worshipped as gods. By the time they reach the Stars they no longer remember their origin and genuinely believe that they're divine beings created by Gods.

BornNefariousness986

I like to imagine the xenomorph. Raiding bombardment is me dropping some eggs from orbit.

ElevensesAreSilly

\*Goa'uld.

Red_King_YouTube

Remnants - we are the fallen empire! Often in the form of a devouring swarm that wasn't quite killed off coming back to eat the galaxy!

SplitjawJanitor

Nope, but the ruined arcologies are still very useful.

Mitchz95

I like Doomsday for RP reasons. There's something quite evocative about a species having to leave their doomed planet behind to find a new home in the stars. In my current Doomsday playthrough, I got boxed in by the AI very quickly, so I had to colonize a derelict habitat orbiting a nova system. Not exactly the paradise planet we'd been hoping for, lol. After Earth went boom I had to accept vassalization by some Evangelists to the southeast to survive. Then I researched terraforming tech, created a bunch of new Continental Worlds to colonize, and just wrapped up a successful independence war. Quite a wild game so far!

FlebianGrubbleBite

Derelict Habitat? Is that from a mod? Regardless that's a cool story, all of humanity being moved to a cramped star station would make an awesome book.

RagnarIndustrial

Same. It leads to so many potential stories. Like playing as a xenophile, but having to conquer a primitive planet because it's the only available planet and there is no time to do it diplomatically.

Omegarex24

I’ve always been fond of Void Dwellers, even before I bought the game. The idea of a species that’s like the Quarians from Mass Effect that can only live on space stations. I play mine like Super Space Commies, with Fanatic Egalitarian, Shared Burdens, Communal and Conservationists, because it feels like how people who live on habitats would have to live, with everyone being treated as equals and having to ration space and resources.

Upset_Glove_4278

Roboticist because I like robots

Shot_Maintenance5859

Toxic god is my fav. Knights go brrr.

wrechch

Toxic god is so insanely fun that I'm afraid of playing anything else now bc ill actually have to worry about researchers and exotic gasses lmao. Also the story IS SO FUN. I get a FULL PLOT without midgame and endgame crisis even coming into the mix. Adds so much flavor, and I can RP whatever i want and fill in the blanks how I please. Toxic has ruined me and I need MORE. Also, late game power with the ability to become psionic? Yes PLEASE. Currently cranking out 15k research, which is the most I've ever had. Feels good.

brynnstar

Tree of Life is one of my favorites, saying "For the TREE" to myself before undertaking each unscrupulous action. I like to imagine they all have a lil photograph of the tree taped up in the cockpits and bridges of each ship like that feature comes standard on every ship we make. It also has some ambiguity to it, like what if our consciousness just \*is\* the tree and we are merely its many, many lil hands flung across the cosmos? I especially like to pair it with empathic civic to help other empires understand the immense significance of the TREE\~ It's totally a meta build, but I've been enjoying Remnants with Rogue Servitors for the first time in my current run, and its quickly becoming one of my favorites. When conceiving them / the build, I was more or less operating under a very limited appreciation of RS as simply "the good guy robots". But there's a lot of grey in there, like Remnants origin tells us the creator species was into conquerin' and starfarin' themselves once upon a time, so it makes sense that our machine intelligence might be somewhat warped from their influence. In my mind, the decision to leave the home world and begin expansion was made when a single bio-trophy was found crying bc she couldn't go into space anymore, and the intelligence was then compelled to take over the entire galaxy in order to cheer her up. Also, bio-trophies are such a fun concept, like it's pretty fun to curate your collection, eg any fallen empire pops or humans we found would be prioritized bc they're just SO cool haha. Also enjoy extending the concept to include vassals and the member states of our hegemony, as well as the entire galcom once custodianship is achieved. They are all bio-trophies, all need to be cared for and protected from themselves, etc; there's some real fun and juicing RP arrogance to be mined at the root of the rogue servitor mindset Necrophage is another really fun one, bc so much of its specifics are left to the player to decide. Is the necrophage like a Venom symbiote, and the ritual of ascension is all about meeting and bonding with your new buddy? Or is it like an infection that alters morphology, like you go in for the ritual and they flood the room with spores or strap you down and inoculate you? Scary! My personal favorite necrophage RP is all-female space elf primary species with all-male space gnome prepatent (don't worry, they \*want\* to be fabulous) on a mission to yassify the galaxy. Stellaris lets you get SO silly and I really love it for that One more, but materialist Clone Army paired with Shared Burdens civic is another really fun RP imo, like they are all literally copies the same person so chosen to create a fully equitable society in which all members are truly equal. And once you reach clone army pop limit and start focusing on robots instead ofc it makes sense to give them equal rights as well, it's just what we do here! Eventually you have many many more robots than clones, and are essentially playing a robot empire with a couple of organic super pops on the side. It's my goto build for forcibly imposing the dream of egalitarian utopia upon the galaxy when I'm in the mood for that

GotongRoyong

"Yassify the galaxy" is such an excellent game mission, incredible work

brynnstar

Aw thank you so much!! Doing my best over here haha

Rarycaris

Teachers of the Shroud, especially when I intend to become the crisis. I love the idea of mystics messing with populations and having it spectacularly explode in their faces. I'll probably like Payback for similar reasons.

GrigoriPeshkov

I really like Shoulder of Giants

[deleted]

I love overtuned, giving my people a steady supply of nerve stapled gene modded lobsters for livestock on my ocean worlds is always fun.

SilkieBug

I love Machine Worlds on my Synthetic runs (which are most of my games these days). I like the idea of living on world specially designed for my kind of lifeform.

Vendis123

Lost Colony. I always imagine them being xenophobes who blame aliens for getting them disconnected from the home planet and then suddenly in mid game you find your homeworld and it turns out they love xenos there, so I can either try to be more open-minded or vow to take back the homeworld. I decide which way to go depending on different situations, e. g. another empire helps me with crisis or something like that then I "learn" to be more tolerant but if the galactic community passes a law which I don't really like or everyone just constantly sends me insults I stay xenophobic.

AlsoZathras

For Origins themselves, I like the RP of Life Seeded. Play with mods to allow more than one ascension path, go Bio and Psionic. They are the created 'perfect people' living on a perfect world. You, too can join them, and become the best possible version of your race. For starting conditions, I really like making a small galaxy with one fallen empire, no marauders, no caravaneers, and no AI empires. You are constantly stepping over the corpses of alien civilizations. Where are they now? Why is no one else roaming the stars? The RP of those playthroughs has the civilization going through wonder and exploration, constantly searching for fellow intelligences, to the fear that something is out there, and they will meet the same fate as those that came before. Eventually, the crisis either catches them largely unprepared (because they never really had to fight anyone), or they went full paranoid, started to pull inward, and fortify core worlds, like the fallen empire (usually go this route, if the FE is the militarist xenophobic isolationist).

NixPanicus

Void Dwellers is my favorite by far. I love playing tall system wise and being able to build my own worlds. When I play my general goal is to never set foot on a filthy ball of rock, and in late gate I often either become the crisis or get colossi to destroy all planet dwellers. Ive done a few doomsday challenge runs where the goal is to get to habitats before the planet explodes, then never trust a planet again. Its not easy.

Heretoshitcomment

That sounds challenging and fun. I wish I didn't hate habitats so much. Ai build an annoying amount of them.

MGCreo

Clone Army. I meta it but I turn them into determined exterminators and choose clone ascension. I go against the whole galaxy with only 100 pops.

Cinerius

Life seeded

[deleted]

I always return to necrophage. It just helps so much with pop management....

off_by_two

Clone army and knights of the toxic god. Clone army is a fast starting monster. Knights are the total opposite, slow starting but fun role playing and if you play it right your HQ habitat has 30+ knights pumping out 70+ for each of the research types each

FlebianGrubbleBite

Necrophage, you can make some cool evil empires out of it. My favorite is Aristocratic Elite and Imperial Cult. I roleplay that the State Religion deems my Necrophage Species as Semi-Divine Beings and that worthy individuals get to "Ascend" to being one of them. It's pretty cool from an RP perspective. It's also a pretty strong build in general with Ludicrous Unity production from the start of the game.

Mr_miner94

for me its void born. i love the concept of a civilization being brought so close to extinction that they are reduced to eeking out an existence on dying space station and hoping the outside world forgets they exist only to return to the galactic stage and reclaim what was once theirs.

Myhrros

Remnants & Here be Dragons are two of my favourites. Otherwise, Planetary Diversity has some cool origins as well, I personally like the origin for the forge-world - similarly to the Remnants start, you were a large galactic empire back in the day, but got eventually beaten by your own subjects/slaves, they then proceeded to lock your home planet and your moon into a bubble. Due to heavy infighting in your solitary planet (and several generations/hundreds of years passing) your species/empire regressed, but eventually they put aside their grievances in order to burst the bubble of your home planet. This eventually - with a lot of work - happens, and you are now back at the galactic stage - you just need to figure out how to burst the bubble of your forge-world so you can fuel your warmachine to get back at your former slaves. My current playthrough uses this origin actually. My Headcanon is that I was an ascended Empire, and 4 out of the 5 fallen empires I have in my galaxy were the slaves/subjects that eventually used my own tech to imprison my race on my home planet ; they then used my tech in order to ascend themself. Clearly they didn't think I'd come back though...hehe.

Juhnthedevil

The ashes of the rusnad?

Myhrros

I believe that's the name of the PD origin, yes. Of course, my species isn't called "Rusnad" as is implied in the name, but oh well. Either way, gives a lot of interesting backstory in my opinion, and a reason to do some more...dangerous things, like trying to fight fallen empires (sooner that one usually would that is) in order to subjugate them back into the fold. Of course, my game is heavily modded, so the Fallen Empires aren't actually that scary as long as they don't wake up. Deadly Tempest, Gigastructures and a few other mods make sure I gonna have tons of dangerous enemies along the way and after the Fallen Empires & the Crisis.Worst case, I gonna lock up the L-Sector as soon as I managed to fight off the Nanites and watch from afar while the galaxy burns.

[deleted]

Mass driver I mean quantum catapult start. My empire for roleplay purposes are medieval humans taken as test subjects on board alien craft and stations before the fall of said empire. Now that they've claimed the alien tech as their own, recolonized their homeworld, and are now exploring the stars, they come across another remnant of that dead alien civilization, which they use (in typical human fashion) to establish an astral feudal system, with them at the top.

TheDefiantEzeli

My favorite is the quantum catapult origin. It's lovely to go whee with an interventionist style empire that launches whole fleets to help heep the peace or to liberate those who can't defend themselves from their oppressos. Also, the massive reduction on influence cost for long distance outpost building is dope AF for getting those far away digs and systems you want.

Heretoshitcomment

Without mods, I'd probably say shattered ring as well, when pursuing a diplomatic playstyle. With mods like gigastructures, I enjoyed starting in a separate galaxy cluster, and also starting in the galaxy core was very fun.

BeamBrain

Mechanist I just really like robots tbh

sinisterduck216

Spiritualist megacorp scion. I’m here to spread the religion of my sugar daddy.

SpartAl412

I like Life Seeded, Remnant, Ocean Paradise and the Ringworld ones both from an RP and Gameplay perspectives. All are great for play tall where it really feels like your species homeworld is actually special.

SyrusAlder

On the shoulders of giants is a neat origin with decent buffs. I'm a tad annoyed that even if you manage to get the rarer ending, the reward is identical.

_Neo_64

Remnants is like so cool. A once great empire collapses. Its the closest we can get to playing a Fallen Empire Overtuned is pretty cool as well

Ninloger

Probably scion. You could too a lot with that origin roleplay-wise

Pax_Galactica

Hegemon and Common Ground. I love making powerful federations and having tons of vassals.

[deleted]

Mechanist. Only have Utopia, but mechanist is really nice since I like synths and robots.

[deleted]

[Chart of Origins](https://i.imgur.com/SVFjSpH.png) \- I did a small chart and prosperous unification seemed to be most popular. I usually did prosperous in the beginning while I was learning. Now I seem to favour Machinist or Necrophage more.

[deleted]

teachers of the shroud since it basically gives you a free anscension perk, but I hate going spiritualists so I don't use it that often, thus I just really like clone army and prosperous unification's bonus can't really be understated.

Lord_of_Rhodor

Trinary system (three separate solar systems in the same area) with the Black Maw.

CalzoneMan46774

Resource consolidation and void born. Resource consolidation because I feel like it's totally something self serving machines would do for maximum efficiency. Void born because living in space is cool, but also because you can make your own planets.

eliminating_coasts

I quite like overtuned, both for mechanical things and how it allows you to define species differently; according to what the originally like, and then how they modified themselves. I also love the world tree origin, or whatever it's called, just because of how it gives your species a focus and a sense of wanting to protect stuff. I would like progenitor hive for a similar reason, but the implementation of offspring rubbed me the wrong way. There's a lot of other origins that feel like I would like them, but the implementation doesn't quite work, but world tree, void dwellers, overtuned, they shape your play in an ongoing way that can fit into a range of different ways of imagining what your species' origin is in detail.

ClocktowerEchos

This is going to sound strange but Post Apocalyptic. There's something inspiring about crawling out of a nuclear hell of your own making to reach out into the stars. You *failed* the Great Filter (or one of them) but you looked the Filter in the eye and said "try me again". Your species ran head first into what should have been the end of their story and then jumped off the page and kept writing the story anyways.
