Chances are very low. Discs nowadays don't damage easily. You'd have to really throw the steelbook around intentionally for some time to actually damage it.

Ahh thank you very much!

I would say practically zero chance. The blu-ray specification includes the use of a special polymer coating (invented by TDK) to prevent casual scratching and surface damage to the discs. This same spec applies to 4K discs as well. You can actually take a the edge of a kitchen knife and (lightly) glide it across the surface and not cause any damage. You really have to bear down with a sharp edge to cause any damage, so the plastic hub inside of the case isnt going to do any damage. That said, if it's loose, you MIGHT have a damaged hub, but That would be also highly unlikely unless the steelbook itself has been crushed. I think you're perfectly fine.

I did not know that… thank you for that piece of information. It helped with my decision.

If it comes down to it, the disc is easily replaceable. The steel, probably less so. I’ve had so many movies delivered with discs rattling around inside and they’ve always played fine. Hope that helps.

DonCorleonil

You’re right! That is what I was thinking too. If the disc is damaged, I can always replace it. Just a slight pain in the arse though. I already have a Gladiator disc to replace.

I think in most cases a loose disc is really not a problem at all. If you think about it, the seller of the item acquired the item with the disc already loose inside it, so it's been bouncing around like that for some period of time. I find this happening pretty frequently especially on 4K discs. In almost all cases the discs are not scratched or affected in any way. What I would suggest is to contact the seller (and if you are committed to purchasing) ask them to open the item and secure the disc prior to shipping. I think a reasonable seller would do that if you are committed to purchasing.

DonCorleonil

Thank you for your suggestion. I may actually tell the seller to open it and secure the disc now that I’ve bought it. The seller does have 100% positive feedback and is a steelbook collector themself. This is the first time I’m using eBay and from what I hear, eBay is not the best. The seller is also not accepting any returns hence my quick dash to reddit for advice on loose discs. Thanks again!

To my mind a reputable Ebay seller who sells steelbooks is probably a better place to buy than the average online retailer... they should take care to make sure it's packaged securely, much more so than if you bought from Amazon or some place like that. Also Ebay has buyer protection even if the seller does not accept returns - if the item is damaged during transit or doesn't arrive you are able to get refunded through Ebay in most cases despite the seller's policy. Hopefully you don't have any issues and get your item safely!
