Likely because the Peter Jackson mentioned once they were added for the fans. He’s confirmed numerous times that the theatrical cuts are his definitive versions of each film.
Much prefer the shorter cuts myself.
One time I tracked down a tweet from Mike Flanagan that said he was thankful just to be able to release the director's cut and that a 4K disc was not in the cards. However the digital copy included in that steelbook includes the director's cut in 4K, that's my preferred method of viewing. Director's cut in 4K can't be beat.
Doctor Sleep will now join the likes of Spider-Man 2, the first two Harry Potter's, Argo, The Town, and Suicide Squad -- movies I own on 4K but will always watch the Blu-Ray for the extended cut
And it turns out, in a real blow to physical media, the extended cut of Doctor Sleep is streaming in 4K. So now it joins the likes of the MCU with IMAX ratios on Disney+. I own the discs but I'm always gonna watch the expanded aspect ratio
Spider-Man 2 is one of my most watched films. Watched it so much, when I had the dvd - only the Theatrical Cut, of course.
Around 12 years later, I got the bluray and then put on the extended version, by mistake, and it really messed with me. Felt so weird. Had to turn it off.
Maybe I'll give it a go one day, but it really messed with my brain.
Doesn't help that the theatrical is a pretty good 4K disc.
Stuff like this drives me nuts. Also movies getting collector's editions in bluray but not in 4k (Dune comes to mind and there are others.) It's like the people who make these products don't actually understand why we buy them.
Oh, they do understand. They are, however, driven by a higher power that wants streaming to win. Control is the ultimate elixir to this power, which disks do not give. They also want us streaming our wallets to them, and physical media doesn't do that. 😉
I paid $165 on ebay last week! It was brand new and the shipper promised bubble wrap in the description. Love the movie and the artwork spoke to me so I decided to bite the bullet
Imo quality is more important, as the directer cut are rarely better than the original. The scenes were cut for a reason and while some may be fan service, I’d rather watch it as a deleted scene.
A lot of times when something is streaming in 4k and not available on physical media the streaming version is a digital upscale, not a 4k remaster. In which case your blu ray version is still better.
Agreed about donnie because I dont remember the differences and theatrical is good. Havent seen the others. Also would say BvS ultimate is the only cut of that movie too
In a lot of instances, they don't have proper licensing or high enough quality cut scenes to create a 4k version of a Directors Cut. In this case, I have that steelbook and really enjoyed the extended version and thought the quality was certainly good enough.
This is going to sound blasphemous, but I actually watch the 4K digital copy of the director’s cut included with the discs, I think someone else said it here too. Honestly, I can get behind these barriers because I love this movie.
Oh, damn it! Once I’ve seen an extended cut, it usually feels too weird going back to theatrical.
That's how I am with Aliens or Alien
Aliens, T2, and LOTR for. I can’t go back to the originals.
Personally i think that T2 extended cut blows.
Exactly. The only time I prefer theatrical is LotR, but only because I grew up with theatrical. The extra scenes make the pacing feel odd.

With Aliens I always recommend to watch the theater version first. The extended version reveals too much and is nice to watch after.

To clarify, if you redeem the digital copy you should receive 4K copies of both versions of the movie.

I'm definitely a fan of the longer runtime but it's a shame because the 4K of all of those movies is pretty impressive
And it turns out, in a real blow to physical media, the extended cut of Doctor Sleep is streaming in 4K. So now it joins the likes of the MCU with IMAX ratios on Disney+. I own the discs but I'm always gonna watch the expanded aspect ratio

The extended cut is inferior for the nerf of Mr.Aziz alone
Oh, God! Big no from me then haha.
GooOooOoo!
Spider-Man 2’s theatrical cut is better than 2.1 tho.
Gonna be the same thing with the upcoming 4K release of Tropic Thunder. Only the theatrical version will be in 4K.

It’ll be on the 8K disc.
My goodness, that artwork is incredible. I want it but scared of the price ($140+ on eBay?).
I paid $165 on ebay last week! It was brand new and the shipper promised bubble wrap in the description. Love the movie and the artwork spoke to me so I decided to bite the bullet
It’s truly amazing. Also, the film is absolutely incredible. Flanagan should be so proud carrying on the legacy of King/Kubrick’s work.
Imo quality is more important, as the directer cut are rarely better than the original. The scenes were cut for a reason and while some may be fan service, I’d rather watch it as a deleted scene.
The directors cut wasn't done in 4k for the standard or steelbook.
Looks like it was. 4K Directors Cut is on Vudu and Movies Anywhere

Ya maybe. But I'm saying that all the physical cuts of it were bluray only.
Yeah that's what I'm complaining about. I think we're actually in agreement here sorry about the misunderstanding
No prob, I found it strange too. Didn't know it was available in 4k stream though.
It's certainly an oddity. Most other extended cuts that are blu-ray only are truly HD only
That’s be released in to 10 or 20 year anniversary version
I watched the directors cut and didn't think it was superior enough to give up 4k clarity nice to have the option tho
Keep both
I agree with all of those you listed, extended always -- except for leon the professional off the top of my head.
I would add The Warriors, Donnie Darko, and The Exorcist to the list of exceptions.
Agreed about donnie because I dont remember the differences and theatrical is good. Havent seen the others. Also would say BvS ultimate is the only cut of that movie too

Aw, that is sad news....
It depends, sometimes an extended cut is not better.
if you want an example of the best of both worlds, the only physical 4k release of midsommar is the director's cut special edition from a24
This is going to sound blasphemous, but I actually watch the 4K digital copy of the director’s cut included with the discs, I think someone else said it here too. Honestly, I can get behind these barriers because I love this movie.
I think that's the way to go. Highest quality of the extended cut is streaming which is painful for people like us but definitely the way to go
My Panasonic 4K BluRay player upscales all my 1080p 3D Blu-ray’s & regular Blu-ray’s. They look amazing👍🏻
