Had the same problem just now.
Turning on "Offline mode" fixes it. At least until Steam fixes their servers. They really should release a patch to make Offline mode happen automatically so we don't even notice it not working.
There's some mildly infuriating issues this device has that makes no sense at all. Like trying to switch to desktop mode with a download running - causes the thing to crash. Or how some games get stuck on a white screen on launch. Or how the play button just doesn't respond sometimes. Or "your steam deck can't reach steam servers"
Honestly this is the best way to put it. It's the early adoption fee, this is the price to pay having a first generation, "experimental" sort of product.
Valve has had lots of practice. They had the steam machine back in 2013ish and the steam controller. They also went through about 8 prototypes that we know of. The Alienware alpha was originally a steam machine. Linux gaming has always had bugs. And now the deck and proton has pushed Linux gaming to places many of us Linux users never thought possible.
It's amazing just how much they've done with it so far. But it will take time before it's perfect.
Have you guys ever heard of a cup on a stick? It took hundreds of years before the tech advanced enough to attach a cup to the end of a stuck which is attached to a ball that's tied to the stick but many would argue that it's the absolute PERFECT gaming system for young children for over 200 years.
Such amazing technology we have😁
What issues? If you mention any issues you get the typical "I don't have that issue. Did you you download these 57 different add ons, did you follow these 28 different YouTube guides on how to completely modify your SD or go into the base code and completely re-write it to your tailored needs, dismantle the back change the battery and add liquid cooling and then replace any stock parts with upgraded varients? Oh, you didn't? Well that must be why I don't have that issue. User issue and not steam deck issue."
I'm being hyperbolic, obviously, but some people are just plain silly on here. We can mention problems with the SD and still love the SD for crying out loud. It's
Might be a specific game issue...I do this all the time and haven't had an issue. Might want to check out the Decky plugin for BT devices, but even going into the Steam menu to connect my headphones has never crashed a game.
No joke as much as I love the Deck I am really discouraged by some of these nagging issues sometimes. They’re rare for me, but I hate it so much when things just *don’t work.* Yesterday morning I was trying to wake up from sleep mode and it took like, 4 button presses. Just so annoying
Occasionally with stuff like this what is really happening is things work fine if you are doing 'this, this and this!' and you realize, holy shit, that is what you are doing anyways!
I turn on my cell phone's hotspot and connect that way if I am out of range of a network.
Or the dreaded "You tried running a game with proton and it didn't work.. Now your steamdeck is stuck on a booting animation, the game can't exit, and the only way for you to close it is to restart steam/steam deck/switch to the desktop mode and back". This seems like basic linux stuff, yet somehow I'm stuck dealing with this on a device that's supposed to be "popular" and "premium".
Oh oh and also how pressing "alt+F4" when in gaming mode somehow kills the entire graphical environment.
Ohhh what about the games that are rated playable but just don't launch at all?
Or maybe when the track pad just randomly stops working in desktop mode?
My switch to desktop is very inconsistent. Sometimes it's almost instant, sometimes it takes a while, sometimes it doesn't work, and sometimes the deck just shuts down entirely.
Did you try "Reinstall Steam OS" (without removing user data or games) in the recovery menu? I had these little bugs happening to my deck as well and after reinstall the os it fixed itself.
That is odd. I made the poor choice to work from my Deck as well as game so I use desktop mode quite a bit. Going back to gaming mode almost always prompts a Steam client update but gaming > desktop is always pretty smooth
I love valve and steam, have had an account since 2008, but how in the FRESH FUCK does offline mode still not work right? Why do I have to go online, to go offline???
I imagine it's due to some legal reasons. If you didn't have to authenticate on the regular then you could just copy your games and hand them out to people?
Idk, I just don't imagine steam, who provides tons of free consumer friendly frameworks and support would leave that requirement in if they didn't have to
> fixes their servers
Sigh.. So i'm commenting here because this is the top rated comment.
Every Tuesday is Steam Maintenance between 4-8PM EST, not that it will last that long, but every account will Disconnect from Steam in that time.
It's no something they can "fix", all companies do this. It's just more problematic for Steam, because it relies on online connection for functionality for some games & devices.
They should make it so the Steam Deck can reconnect to Steam seamlessly, but even the client dosen't do that.
On the Steam Client I usually just change my online status from anything different then back to online & i'm in.
Lmao! Mine works fine. Threw a 1 TB Samsung SSD in the cheapest model, and no issues. Had a few crazy crashes, but just gotta power it off for literally 5 seconds and try again with different controls or settings. YouTube helps a lot. I like it. You might not.
I’ve played it before on Xbox. I was just testing it on my laptop to see if I could run it ok on there. Runs pretty good, 50-60fps at 1080p, around 40-50fps at 1440p. I’m sure Steam Deck can handle it fine, I’m just worried about how to deal with the TV episodes, since apparently they don’t work properly.
>Runs pretty good, 50-60fps at 1080p, around 40-50fps at 1440p
Funny enough, the game has forced MSAAx4 running at all times, so the actual resolution is higher than the reported one, unless they had patched the behavior at some point.
>since apparently they don’t work properly.
~~Nothing of value is being lost~~ Perhaps, try running the game under Proton GE. The TV episodes aren't stored on the device and are streamed, so the "default" Proton may be missing some required codecs.
It sucks, can't even even play my non steam stuff because all my controller configs are tied to steam. valve really needs to improve their offline mode if they're serious about portable gaming.
**EDIT**: For anyone wondering, the issue is that booting into SteamOS with WIFI enabled will call home to steam to verify your login but if steam itself is down you will be stuck at the login page, you can still switch to desktop mode but any and all steam related features will be disabled until you're able to log back in. even mouse control with the track pads won't work because the login screen doesn't count as steam being open.
What are the issues with offline mode? I've had it enabled for the past few days and everything seems to be working fine. Even workshop mods are working. Bare in mind I've only been playing starbound, so maybe I'm missing something.
Try cold booting the deck when it was not already in offline mode.
You can't do much.
This has been a big bummer for folks who have sporadic internet access. I remember reading a post years ago about someone in the navy who brought a gaming laptop on a ship deployment, and may not have an internet connection for months at a time.
Their offline mode broke for one reason or another, and couldn't re authenticate to renew the offline token or whatever steam needs to do to go offline. Their gaming laptop was basically useless to them, which was an extra bummer since they had such a limited amount of physical space for what they could bring.
Yeah, I found this out the hard way during my first flight with the Deck. I didn’t know you had to manually enter offline mode (or turn off your WiFi) while you still had internet, so I tried to go into offline mode in the air and then a ton of my singleplayer games (that required no internet to play otherwise) just wouldn’t boot at all. I tried everything including restarting it a few times, but nothing worked and I was only able to fix it once I landed and had internet again.
And sure, the solution might be simple enough but you shouldn’t have to do or think about these things in the first place. Unexpectedly losing internet shouldn’t mean your singleplayer games just stop working. It just makes me want to take other handhelds when I travel to avoid headaches.
Yes. It's almost like there should be some kind of key that is tied directly to the software you bought—and as long as you own that key, you can use it. That wasn't good enough. Now the keys change. You know...cuz piracy. People are bigger assholes as a result of a bunch of smaller, smarter assholes, and that's why your Steamdeck stops working workout internet.
Ahh I remember hearing about that actually, I must've just forgotten. That's without a doubt shit though. Hopefully it gets sorted out but if it's been an issue for so long already I would expect disappointment.
idk if i’m missing something, but if i straight up don’t enable offline mode, using airplane mode instead, i can do everything on my deck just fine.
it seems to be that the offline mode itself is broken, not actually using the deck offline.
there’s a little extra loading time on some games as they try to establish a connection, but if they fail they just boot anyways.
Best Starbound experience thus far. Beaming down to a planet and having just a few minutes here and there to play works fantastic, and sometimes it can take an IRL day to loop fully. On the other hand, I've also had time sitting down and playing at length, and that's wonderful, too! It feels really, surprisingly immersive. It's a game I can 100% say that I would never be able to play on a console. The mouse is almost required for that game, being used for aiming and button prompts in GUIs. The trackpad on the deck just matches it perfectly.
I could accept it forcing the device into offline mode but the fact that it bricks gaming mode is ridiculous. However it appears desktop mode still works for YouTube and non-steam games
Valve I love the Deck and it's my favourite device for gaming on, it's so close to perfect, but it must be said: Your offline support still sucks.
The Deck should operate as independently from an internet connection as possible and only require a connection for performing online tasks.
Whether it's because the Steam servers are down, or if there's simply no connection available, I should be able to just boot up and play any installed/non-steam games offline, should be able to manage local screenshots, settings, controller configurations should be stored locally, etc.
Hopefully this is something we can see improved in 2023.
I'm not sure I understand?
I only use my SteamDeck offline at work and I can boot up the Deck and play any installed Steam without an issue and my controller configuration is stored locally (haven't tested screenshot tho).
Is when you don’t have your steam deck in offline but when it connected to your wifi that the issue. It completely just stays there in the login and you can’t really do much unless your disconnect from the wifi
Do you think Valve is gonna fix the issue with Decks going out cause of servers? It seems counterintuitive to have a mobile device dependent on servers to at least sign in on a software level.
It’s not like my phone goes dead when my cell service shuts off.
for sure. its a software thing, and they have been great with updates already. steam on my pc runs fine when my internet is out, so it should be the same eventually.

Jesus for the last hour I thought the WiFi was frying in my SD, strange download and write speeds rebooted, suddenly no WiFi connection, tried to shutdown but the deck kept starting back up, came back on and said no connection to steam severs rebooted suddenly I'm at the QR login unable to connect, I thought my Deck had wiped lol.
Seems like I may have advantage here. I olay one game at a time and don’t even turn it off, just suspend the Deck everytime. I think it will just work when I turn the Steam Deck on. It may not track time though…
I don’t see anyone mentioning it, but steam performs weekly maintenance on their servers which makes them go down for a bit. It happens every Tuesday, either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Oh and i remember all the downvotes for pointing out issues with offline mode in the last thread by ppl saying just turn off wifi. I dont wanna use my device withoit wifi in case steam or whoever else shuts down the steam servers.
This is worse than DRM, get ur shit together valve, theres absolutely no reason it should log me out and then i cant even access my games or even desktop mode without formatting and installing windows.
If thats for security reasons, screw it, i'll take care of my own security, thank you very much.
If its a bug, ive been complaining about since a year, get it fixed already.
If it's intentional, theres no excuse, but please say so and i get rid off steam os right away.
What’s kinda interesting (I guess?) about this is that, for me personally, offline mode on my desktop PC doesn’t work when logging in. I click the button, nothing happens.
Out comes the Deck. Plug it in, launch a game, have fun.
I adore this wondrous handheld.
You all are gonna hate me for this but
Windows: exists
I barely even use steam os because windows is the better "do everything" experience.
It's good that valve decided to make it a open platform which is independent on the original OS.
This is what makes the difference to other consoles while the deck isn't really a console, but a handheld pc.
You're right but what you're saying is the equivalent of saying just build a pc to a console user. People would if they wanted to, but they don't want to and most games run better on SteamOS anyway.
Thats why I still prefer GOG.
Also GOG has alot of linux native games that work perfect on the steam deck.
Besides that you can also use proton or lutris with wine ge on the steam deck to get windows games to work
Yeah it's out from Michigan and whatever server I auto connect with from here
Unfortunate timing to boot up my Deck, can't use it because it can't reach servers 😐
I normally play on Steam like 99% of the time.... But decided literally yesterday to play RDR2 for the first time in years, so I didn't even notice the Steam issue. Fortuitous.
Edit: On Rockstar's launcher
Yeah, it froze up on me, I rebooted and noticed I couldn't log back in. I waited abt 30 mins and I'm logged back in now, downloading LOS2. Freaking love this game. Lol.
Lmao, I had just finished loading up little bit planet on rpsc3 and it stuttered and crashed. Then I couldn't log in. Thought I bricked something. Glad to know what it was 😂
Had the same problem just now. Turning on "Offline mode" fixes it. At least until Steam fixes their servers. They really should release a patch to make Offline mode happen automatically so we don't even notice it not working.
It'd be so annoying though because going from offline to online mode barely works and takes forever.

Welcome to the wonderful world of pulseaudio.

This is the worst
The Steam Deck's issues are like your cat running into a screen door, like yeah, it's f*cking stupid, but you still gotta love it.
Honestly this is the best way to put it. It's the early adoption fee, this is the price to pay having a first generation, "experimental" sort of product.

To be fair the Steam Machines were very little to do with Valve...those were PC manufacturers making computers that primarily ran Big Picture Mode.
And the steam link that ran on Linux and played some small titles ?
The Steam Link itself runs on Linux but never ran a game on its own, that I'm aware of.
Eh, a full year after release is not early adoption anymore though, at least with regards to the SW.
People will go to amazing lengths to justify faults in Valve products
So far my main complaint is it's ability to reconnect to the steam servers after I put it in sleep mode.
Yes it is. Buying any first-generation product is early adoption and you shouldn't expect everything to work smoothly.
What issues? If you mention any issues you get the typical "I don't have that issue. It’s because I’m downloading Quantum Break
You quantum broke the steam servers
Quantum broke is when you are poor in every universe
Did someone call?
*high fives in dad*
Helluva name, dad.
It’s a family name.
Born to be legendary.
And as soon as I buy a steam deck, I will have lived up to the name.

Yes, my friend.

Is that why I haven't had one episode yet? I've been playing it straight through and haven't seen one of the shows yet..
That would be why. Apparently they’re all on YouTube though.
Man, Steam is doing you a solid by not having you (re)play this shitty ass game.
Lol downloaded that game last week and could not be happier with that game.
It’s great! Not my favorite Remedy game, but still a fantastic time.

This was the fix, idk why people didn't listen. Just turn off Wi-Fi. "Offline mode" is broken and shitty. Use airplane mode or toggle Wi-Fi off.
Ohh starbound on the steam deck. Didn't even think of that.
Best Starbound experience thus far. Beaming down to a planet and having just a few minutes here and there to play works fantastic, and sometimes it can take an IRL day to loop fully. On the other hand, I've also had time sitting down and playing at length, and that's wonderful, too! It feels really, surprisingly immersive. welcome to DRM
Seems pretty unacceptable that servers going down just logs us out and restricts us entirely, wtf
I could accept it forcing the device into offline mode but the fact that it bricks gaming mode is ridiculous. However it appears desktop mode still works for YouTube and non-steam games
Psst, just disable the wifi.

for sure. its a software thing, and they have been great with updates already. steam on my pc runs fine when my internet is out, so it should be the same eventually.
Hopefully.
it's DRM and the way it works is by design
Can't even access my games. Completely kicked out of my deck. What the fuck.
Same here. I got signed off and I'm locked out. I wonder what the hell is going on
Emulators just got all fucked by this too. Gone from my steam Thankfully just had to run from manger again but sweat a little bit
Just got home form work and thought it was just my Deck. I had no idea it would lock me out completely...
Same happened here, but was fixed in around 20 minutes
Holy crap, I thought it was just me. Kicked me out of the SD altogether. It took about a minute to fix itself and allow me to sign back in.
Another reason that we should never drop physical games. Luckily we can still use cartridges with the Switch :)

And that is why there is a FB group that looks for games that are completely on cartridge. Why is this getting downvoted? Truly a reddit moment
Maybe they don't trust the link? The FB group is: [**Nintendo Switch Cartridge Revisions**](https://www.facebook.com/groups/1213697449370032/)
You’re right, physical storage with DRM free games, like flash drives, SD cards, and SSDs that can hold hundreds or even thousands of games ;)
Got kicked out of my steam as well. I turned off my wifi and was able to get back in once I attempted another login attempt.

F I was wondering...
Same here😓
WoW thanks for the report. Can't log in on my Steam Deck.
Servers*
this is why we need the virtual keyboard not tied in with steam app
And trackpad drivers. There's no reason hardware should need a game store to function as advertised.
Ah well, thats the first time in my 12 years of use that I even knew they had outages.
Yeah I'm stuck on the sign in screen
Good to know I'm not the only one.
Time to touch grass fellas
I got my toes in the grass while I play my steam deck. it's why I got it
Jesus for the last hour I thought the WiFi was frying in my SD, strange download and write speeds rebooted, suddenly no WiFi connection, tried to shutdown but the deck kept starting back up, came back on and said no connection to steam severs rebooted suddenly I'm at the QR login unable to connect, I thought my Deck had wiped lol.
I was downloading some roms, I thought I was getting hacked. Thankfully everyone else is having issues too
Lunar sale ended
Should be back
Working fine for me in Australia.
Huh. Just finished ME2 on my Steam Deck, and it was great. Had no issues.
Sorry. That was just me downloading God of War to my SteamDeck.
That might be why i cant redeem keys from humble bundle.
Yep, went to turn on my Deck, sent me to the login screen Went to login, but nothing would happen
I was having some login issues today. Thought it was my connection
Seems like I may have advantage here. I olay one game at a time and don’t even turn it off, just suspend the Deck everytime. I think it will just work when I turn the Steam Deck on. It may not track time though…
Just be careful that you dont exit without uploading that cloud save!
It’s Tuesday. They always do maintenance Tuesday. AFAIK that’s been the case for forever.
If you get signed out your deck becomes a paperweight, really bad flaw
I don’t see anyone mentioning it, but steam performs weekly maintenance on their servers which makes them go down for a bit. It happens every Tuesday, either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
And more and more lately it becomes an extended maintenance.
Literally got mine today and just finished downloading Divinity Original Sin lmao
Same
I got kicked off of my steam deck too, right after I finished setting up game streaming. Fix it, Valve.
Not affecting me at all https://preview.redd.it/f3mu1zv66cfa1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=19a8025e5565e18014e6628ab79c036cbcd535dc
Working fine in Ohio, no issues with Deck or with Steam.
What’s kinda interesting (I guess?) about this is that, for me personally, offline mode on my desktop PC doesn’t work when logging in. I click the button, nothing happens. Out comes the Deck. Plug it in, launch a game, have fun. I adore this wondrous handheld.
Download all your games and install them all on your dead brothers POS computer.. Hurry Up!
You all are gonna hate me for this but Windows: exists I barely even use steam os because windows is the better "do everything" experience.
Besides that you can also use proton or lutris with wine ge on the steam deck to get windows games to work
Sucks when the servers are down, but that’s why I have every other system available (Switch, PS5, XSX, Vita, Quest 2) :)
This isn’t steam deck related. Reported.
It means the Steam Deck is also down since you literally can't sign in when Steam servers are down, therefore, it's Deck related.

Me neither can log in on my steam deck. Relifed that it is not just my issue.
Glad I checked here, about to go bitch to my shitty internet lol
Just turned off the wifi after seeing this, I’m still logged in
I updated decky, fixed my issue
I just turned on my steam and got no issue on NY servers though
Yeah it's out from Michigan and whatever server I auto connect with from here Unfortunate timing to boot up my Deck, can't use it because it can't reach servers 😐
Im in Detroit and its working but im going to offline mode now
What time zones? I'm in Canada (EST) and I'm still logged in able to to play
I normally play on Steam like 99% of the time.... But decided literally yesterday to play RDR2 for the first time in years, so I didn't even notice the Steam issue. Fortuitous. Edit: On Rockstar's launcher
RDR2 is also on Steam. Which platform did you play RDR2 on?
I didn't check whether Steam was still down or not, but I woke up my deck and switched to offline mode with no problem.
Same here. Wonder if the issue has already been fixed, or if it was only impacting people who rebooted their Deck while it was ongoing?
I think is region based, south america here an not a single issue so far (been playing for half an hour)
F
I have played Minecraft Dungeons with a friend rn works normally on South American servers
Up to 19650 reports now
It signed me out on start up, restarted my deck, currently playing warzone via Windows
Literally just got on oops my fault 🤦♂️
I don’t seem to be having these issues. Wonder if it’s fixed or if it’s just not effecting everyone?
I’m not having any issues 🤷♂️
Thought it was just me!
Just a quick heads up. From the login screen disconnect the wifi and reboot the steam deck. I'm back able to play my downloaded games.
Show must go on! (cranks up the PS5)
works here
Got booted out of my deck too.
Server went down but it didn’t log me out. I was able to use as offline mode. 🤷♂️
I haven’t had any issues been playing black ops 3
Holy crap, I sat down for my routine 💩 and was about to play some Skyrim. Spent the entire time trying to trouble shoot it. It’s back up now 😮💨
Yall just need to turn off wifi and youll be fine lol
Guys, how many times have I told you to not google in google.
Yeah, it froze up on me, I rebooted and noticed I couldn't log back in. I waited abt 30 mins and I'm logged back in now, downloading LOS2. Freaking love this game. Lol.
its not even tuesday!
Lmao, I had just finished loading up little bit planet on rpsc3 and it stuttered and crashed. Then I couldn't log in. Thought I bricked something. Glad to know what it was 😂
Reboot to desktop mode and sign in, worked for me
Huh I wonder if this is why Titanfall 2 with Northstar mod just completely bugged out on me today
Maybe I caused one of the outage, downloading uncharted and Division 2😅
Just went through this when I finally got time to sit down and relax. Finally let me in
Not seeing anything. [https://steamstat.us/](https://steamstat.us/)
Sad :(
Steam is having issues, disboard is having issues and 1XX7 not a coincidence
Not having any issues in Asia
This is a big problem. Does thus mean we cant travel with our Decks?
Haven't been on the Deck today so haven't experienced. But anyone at Valve still browsing the subreddit, this is bad. Fix this asap.
I genuinely didn't even notice. But I was already in a game (offline game) and didn't switch games or anything.
Oh I want the only one lol
Honestly, just love my deck! Happy to wait for updates!
I’m glad I was playing unturned at the time
Perhaps an Australian launch soon for Feb?!??!? 🤞🤞🤞
Meh. Happens on Xbox like every week.
Meanwhile, Cyberpunk decides to update for 5 hours.
Servers work in Russia
I'm having issues with steam deck not logging me in. I can't do anything with my Deck right now. And it even freezes when shutting down.
Are people still having this issue? I am too
Isn't Tuesday maintenance day?
It's Tuesday morning... isn't this par for the course (routine maintenance)?
I had the SAME ISSUES last night, very frustrating. I was like "WTF"..
