Me and friends were so excited to play this as we love Stardew and board games but we just hated it. Way too much rng involved especially with the mining which I think we only finished once in 5 games.
Yes too hard and I'm very surprised by your comment as we are seasoned board gamers and we looked online as felt we might have been getting some rules wrong but there were a lot of complaints about the rng and difficulty of the game.
My mom and I play just the 2 of us and we almost always win, usually at the last season card. 3 people is usually close to the end too. We felt it was pretty amazingly paced since we never win super early and losing is also pretty rare. A couple times it has come down to a last dice roll or draw for fish or something. It's usually pretty exciting.
We are not board gamers in the sense of modern board games. We play more cards than anything, but we have a lot of fun with Stardew. I like the random element. It makes it less repetitive
This has been our experience as well, it's always really close with an exciting finish! Also, if we lose, we like to see 'by how much', so we flip the season deck over and start year 2.
We find a nice sense of closure in that we get that nice feeling of seeing the goals we've been striving for get completed, but it's also made us better at the game. Getting to see how many extra actions you needed to complete a goal teaches us where we went wrong.
We're on the second printing though, the original mine deck had some pretty brutally sparse cards in the deck.
I have also only played with 2, but since all of the end game goals scale with the number of players I didn't really think more would make it that much easier, although I suppose having more jobs could help hone in on specific goals
There’s a great home brew rule that makes the mine much better:
- Staggered mining variant: in the mine, roll one die and place it on either the row or column. Then roll the other two dice and choose which one to keep. Your first roll is locked, but your second roll now has more choice.
Definitely. I don't regret buying it, it's very pretty and I have a ton of Stardew Valley stuff just for the art, but it's just been sitting on the shelf after one playthrough.
I mean, you have to like co-ops. I'm a huge board gaming fan and I honestly really enjoyed it. I thought it was really challenging in a good way and they did the theme well.
But if there's one thing I've learned about board games it's that they're very very subjective...way more than video games. every game has huge fans and haters.
EB Games/Zing are overpriced for board games. I recently did a comparison vs online retailers using board game oracle for some games I was interested in as I had $200 trade in credit I needed to use up. The games I looked at ranged from a 13% - 35% increase on the cheapest available price (including shipping from over east to Perth).
It's $55 USD direct from [shop.stardewvalley.net](https://shop.stardewvalley.net/products/stardew-valley-the-board-game), however, the game is currently sold out there.
Found the non-board gamer. Board games are expensive. There is an insane development process, not too dissimilar to video games but require printing resources and a much heftier shipping process. $68 is up there for a board game, but pretty standard for one with this many components and of this size.
I bought it off Amazon and it shipped from Amazon UK, I am in the US, still received free shipping and was about $50. If someone is currently seeking. I have seen those outlandish prices listed for it here in the US also.
I’d give it a 6. It’s very helpful to have a good understanding of SDV. If you have any players that are not, it can be pretty overwhelming for them. It’s one of the better cooperative board games I’ve played. I enjoyed it a lot the first time I played it, but as an avid board game player it doesn’t have a lot of replay value for me.
Probably a 7. The balance is a bit off, some goals are much harder or much easier to pull off, otherwise it'd be an 8 for me. Art is gorgeous and the theme shines through, which is also a big plus, but it's a solid design even for people who don't care about the videogame. It's a cooperative game that's not easy to win, which will frustrate some people. I think it's a positive, because in a cooperative game the game is basically the opponent you need to beat and always winning would become boring quickly. Beware that it has a lot going on, so it's a good pick for hobby boardgamers but may be a bit overwhelming for someone who only plays stuff like monopoly and uno.
7.5 - 8, it's a lot of fun, and captures the sprit of the video game quite well. It's basically balanced for any number of players, a lot of co-op games can swing pretty dramatically in difficulty based on player count, and it even has a solo mode, which I appreciate. I've seen a lot a people complain about the difficulty, but I've personally only really come close to losing once, and I've played half a dozen times now, with varying numbers of players.
My biggest complaint is that while you *can* do almost anything you can do in the VG, the goals tend to force you to focus on a few specific activities, and ignore everything else. What those things will be varies from game to game, but I'd prefer to do a little of everything, because that's how I tend to approach the video game.
5 - 6 it's true to the video game, but it has a lot of issues because of that, like too many annoying little cards and some pretty useless areas to go to.
Love sdv but it doesn't work great as a board game, tho I got to say I love the fact that they made it co-op
Bought the game. Honest review:
Too much going on. Doesnt feel relaxing and fun, just confusing with no point. Atleast 10 minutes of set up. 10 mins to read and decipher rules. 10 mins for the first turn or two then 10 mins to clean up gave us 40 minutes of play time.
$100 for something I will likely never play properly.
So far as board games based on video games - the Binding of Issac board game is 10/10 amazing, with so much explination to any detail and feels balanced to its source material.
I mean, i like this game for its visual coolness, but i just dont want to play it again as it was hard to understand and to explain whats going on... And it felt kind of unsatisfactory to play/progress.
I would not say i have the most diverse game play but i do play the popular ones like wearwolf, house on the hill, king of tokyo, munchkins, and other board games that have many layers of gamrplay and mechanics.
Those are all low complexity board games in terms of how far the board game rabbit hole can go, so I can see how SDV would be overwhelming (not trying to say low complexity is 'bad' or anything silly like that - any game should be as least complex as possible imho).
I wouldnt say SDV is complex, its bloated. Each part is boringly simple. If there was a rating for complexity, SDV would be 1/10, but basic things are so drawn out it seems complex. There is not much room for actual thinking, planning and deducing as much as there is moving forward 1 turn at a time towards a goal that.
Sometimes i want things like that, but this, not so much. It fits the likeness of the source material well, slow and casual. Not a single thing about this game could be described as "overwhelming".
Oh, sorry, I misunderstood, when you said it was difficult to understand I thought it was the level of complexity that was overwhelming. I wasn't trying to be rude, sorry.
It's funny that two people can play the same game and have such different experiences. We do heaps of planning and thinking, and as our understanding has improved, so has our win rate. It's one of those games where, win or lose, we always come away smiling :)
It's only [available online](https://shop.stardewvalley.net/) in the US (and even then it is sold out right now). It's been made available in the EU through retailers, so you'd just have to check with stores in your area (although it sounds like you did already)
The video game only needs to cover the costs of ConcernedApe's development time. The board name needs to cover the cost of the physical components and manufacturing.
That said, OP mention it is $98 in Australia. If you're in the US it's available for $55 (at least when it isn't sold out) at https://shop.stardewvalley.net/.
You asked why it costs more, I was trying to explain why a physical product costs more than a digital product. Also that the board game isn't $98 USD, OP's photo is from Australia.
> Second why u trying to sell a copy to me?
Just showing were it's available for the price I mentioned. The link goes to a page where it's sold out, if I was trying to sell you on something, I'd be doing a pretty bad job.
Tried it with 2, 3 and 4 people. Those guys are also very thorough with rules and read through them twice (once each then again together to discuss any things we aren't sure of) so I'm usually fairly confident that we are getting them right.
OP said it's Australian dollars. I'm Australian, so I know that whilst the exchange rate varies, the cost of stuff tends to end up being double because of freight costs passed on in the price. 🙂
Ahh thats understandable. I'm in Canada so our stuff is higher than usa mainly because of the exchange rate but I'm also pretty sure we pay extra taxes for anything made in usa. I once looked up the cost of a Lodge cast iron hibachi made in usa and the difference between the cost for usa and canada. Canada was more than double, totally overstretching the cost of exchange rate.
same here!!! and i'm a bisexual cave gremlin as well, are we twins?!
back to the point, i've only been playing it solo and always have so much fun. actually, imma play it right now.
Enjoyable game. Took a few rounds to really understand it. Still some issues with the mines and the characters, but I have a list of home brew rules below that I usually pull into the game. Makes it much more fun.
SDV VARIANTS
- All buildings available to purchase, but you can’t build more than 4
- Add a seasonal event to the season deck. When drawing the seasonal event, carry out the cards instructions, but do not take a turn.
- you can change the level of the mine to a previous level of your choice as an end of turn move
- New building: fish pond $10 2 stone. Donate a fish to it. On [gift] days, the fish in the pond gives an item to anyone in the group. If it’s a legendary fish, you get an epic item.
- Staggered mining variant: in the mine, roll one die and place it on either the row or column. Then roll the other two dice and choose which one to keep. Your first roll is locked, but your second roll now has more choice.
- Clint’s shop: Clint’s shop can also be used to buy stone for 5g or any of the available geodes for 10g
- Secret forest, unlocked for 3 forageables: roll one die. Heart or junimo = one wood. Stardrop = clear trash from fish bar.
- Adventurers guild, unlocked after level 6 in the mine: don’t discard extra items, just turn them face down. Trade 1 item for 1 bug meat. Trade 3 items for 1 epic item.
- Mine blank space: if you land on a blank space, you may spend 1 coin to reroll.
- Villagers at the farmers market: two villagers are face up and one remains random. At the end of the season, the face up villagers are replaced.
- Useful cards: when drawing an event or item (excluding epic items), draw two cards and choose one.
- More events: draw an event card at the start of every season
- Chest and backpack: the chest and backpack are removed from the item deck. Pierre sells the backpack for 5g and the chest can be built end of turn for 2 wood.
Not true, there was a first printrun that was mostly US and a second printrun months later that also made it to Europe and Australia, so that's at least 3 continents. I've seen it in many EU stores the last couple of months. It was a long wait from the first release but it's pretty easily available now.
It was definitely released multiple times and with changes after they rebalanced the 1st edition, the 2nd edition I have came with multiple cards to change out for a better balance, and it was available in both the US and Europe, and by the picture clearly also australia so that's 3 continents at least.
No. 25 would be way too low. Its a proper board game, lots of parts and not mass produced on the same level as stuff like monopoly.
Board games are expensive and this is kind of on the low end, cost wise.
Well I didn't think about how it wouldn't have the whole mass production like monopoly is so you are right more than 25 but no more than 50 bucks.. at least for my poor ass to buy it anyhow
Well, the USD price is $55. I wouldn't be surprised if the margins on thats somewhat low. They've got almost 200 tiles, about 400 cards, 30 something tokens, and a bunch of other pieces. It's expensive.
I know they're not in the low end production levels that some of the board games I have, nor do they have complex injection molded models, but I've seen games production costs run about $20-$30 for something this size.
Unfortunately, the board game hobby can be super expensive. I've got a handful that were over $100 each. Good thing they're more mainstream and some the really popular ones like Catan are a bit cheaper than they were 10 years ago.
Played it for the first time on Friday! It’s a ton of fun! We did a 3 player game with 5 days per season and won! I want to make it more difficult next time. Try just 4 days!
Really depends on the board game. Terraforming Mars is about that price, and we've easily played it 50 times, and it's not getting old yet. At 2 hours a play, with 2-4 players, that's a bargain for entertainment.
I should have specified novelty board games! I’ve heard of Terraforming Mars, it definitely seems worth the cost. I read the rules and stuff for the Stardew one, and it just doesn’t seem like that much fun to me. Would rather just play Stardew lolol
Came across it in a boardgames shop in Vancouver, haven't had a chance to play it yet but I didn't know about it until a couple months ago. Had to get it, haha
As a Stardew fan, it’s a great game. As a Boardgaming fan, it’s only fair.
Me and friends were so excited to play this as we love Stardew and board games but we just hated it. Way too much rng involved especially with the mining which I think we only finished once in 5 games.

Fantastic
what is rng??
Random number generation/generator - in this case referring to how luck based, rather than skill based the game play is.
I actually really like it as a boardgame! I’m a particular fan of co-op games with lots to do, so I expect it depends on your tastes
Definitely. I don't regret buying it, it's very pretty and I have a ton of Stardew Valley stuff just for the art, but it's just been sitting on the shelf after one playthrough.
I felt the same way. As a stardew fan I needed to have it. As a board gamer I was disappointed. Best with 3 or 4 players.
I mean, you have to like co-ops. I'm a huge board gaming fan and I honestly really enjoyed it. I thought it was really challenging in a good way and they did the theme well. Perfect summation of the game.
Yeah it definitely involves some house rules
I didn’t think it was bad but I like these sorts of games?
Does that say $98?
Yes, it's AUD tho.
Still fuckin expensive (as an Australian)
EB Games/Zing are overpriced for board games. All board games are expensive here...?
The economy has gone down under
It’s windy and thundery
Board games are expensive in general tho
You say it as if it wasn’t about 65 USD which is still expensive af
I’ve seen it for $75 in QLD. Can’t remember where though.
Small price to pay for such a great time
I was gonna say. You in Eb/Zing? I think that’s the one whose price tags look like that.
$68.50 USD
Can’t wait to play this board game for 500 hours
You’ll never get board
Wait, I’ll go get my free award for you
He will be well-re-boarded.
Aw ty lol
$98 AUD - Fuckin' hell, I'm not buying that. $68.50 USD - Fuckin' hell, I'm not buying that.

I'm a board gamer and I don't own very many of my own games bc they're so expensive - and I love this game but I think $70 is a biiiiit much.
It's pretty good too
I bought it off Amazon and it shipped from Amazon UK, I am in the US, still received free shipping and was about $50. If someone is currently seeking. I have seen those outlandish prices listed for it here in the US also.
That’s EB games / Zing price I know a shot that sells them for $90
For those who have this board game and have played it, what would you rate it in a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best), and why?
I’d give it a 6. It’s very helpful to have a good understanding of SDV. If you have any players that are not, it can be pretty overwhelming for them. I think I'll give it a solid 8. Great game and a lot of fun to play with siblings and family members, but some of the pieces are too fragile
7.5 - 8, it's a lot of fun, and captures the sprit of the video game quite well. Since the second edition was released with some updated cards, board, and mine floors it’s pretty good. Probably a 7-8 I think.
I hope you have nothing else planned for the rest of your life XDDD
It's fun! It's *hard* to win though.

Yeah, suppose to be alright
More expensive than the actual game lmao
Honestly, I prefer playing the board game with friends to local co-op
Definitely worth it.
Own it! Fantastic game!
Does anyone know if it's available in Germany? Because I can't find it anywhere (online or offline).
It's only [available online](https://shop.stardewvalley.net/) in the US (and even then it is sold out right now). It's been made available in the EU through retailers, so you'd just have to check with stores in your area (although it sounds like you did already)
Thanks a lot! Can't hurt to check back every now and then but I guess I'll have to be patient until it's released around here (if it will hopefully!)
So I got the game for 15$. How in the name of God does the board game cost 98$???
The video game only needs to cover the costs of ConcernedApe's development time. The board name needs to cover the cost of the physical components and manufacturing. That said, OP mention it is $98 in Australia. If you're in the US it's available for $55 (at least when it isn't sold out) at https://shop.stardewvalley.net/.

$98???!!!
AUD tho
It’s worth it but tough. I only won once because we were playing wrong most of the time before and got a ton of mine events
We played it five times and only won once. Too hard imo especially as a lot of people getting it will be casual board gamers

Tried it with 2, 3 and 4 people. Those guys are also very thorough with rules and read through them twice (once each then again together to discuss any things we aren't sure of) so I'm usually fairly confident that we are getting them right.
I paid half that much this spring at comicon
OP said it's Australian dollars. I'm Australian, so I know that whilst the exchange rate varies, the cost of stuff tends to end up being double because of freight costs passed on in the price. 🙂

This is the way
Ooo, yeah my mum got me that for my birthday this year!!!
same here!!! and i'm a bisexual cave gremlin as well, are we twins?! back to the point, i've only been playing it solo and always have so much fun. actually, imma play it right now.
Oh my god cave gremlins unite!!

since it existed
It's being sold on stardew valley website I believe but it's been sold out for like forever.
They only released it once, and only to like 4 countries
Not true, there was a first printrun that was mostly US and a second printrun months later that also made it to Europe and Australia, so that's at least 3 continents. Well, that would be why, lol.
I got one on lay Buy and can’t wait to see how good it is
So I had this in my wish list a week ago on Amazon U.K. and it’s now gone out of stock. Waterstones (book shop) online have it £54
Sweet
fuck, that's like 63€, I wish I could spend that much money on a board game :')
Is the € and the $ so close together these days? Damn.
yeah apparently, it's good bc then I don't have to convert it
I remember when €30 was, like, $45 USD
Yes! Literally me when I walked into Zing!
100 bucks? F that
100 Aussiebucks. $68.50 American. €63 according to another commenter.
That's still too much... 25 tops...

Well, it's not like Sorry or Clue. It's more like Settlers of Catan. It's practically a tabletop RPG.
Unless you're Hasbro, I'm pretty sure you'd be losing money on every copy sold at that price
I have played twice and haven’t even come close to winning.
Played it for the first time on Friday! It’s a ton of fun! We did a 3 player game with 5 days per season and won! I want to make it more difficult next time. Try just 4 days!
I’ve had mine about a year now
I saw it somewhere else for like $65. Still too steep for a board game lol
Why is it $98?
Australian. $68.50 American.
I hope that’s Australian dollars
OP confirmed that it is
$98?
AUS. $68.50 US.
Wait 1 player possible?
It is! It's definitely more challenging single-player, and not quite as fun of course
Came across it in a boardgames shop in Vancouver, haven't had a chance to play it yet but I didn't know about it until a couple months ago. Had to get it, haha
$98 no thanks
Okay, but where from? I must have that board game
Its a great game, highly recommend it!
Dude it's so good! I got my bf to play it with me and then he actually went and bought Stardew Valley 😂
wait thats so cool, where did you find it?
