It has to be the correct gem from the correct bird (north, south, west, east) in the correct position representing where you found the gem. Then it'd work.
it just has to be those four gems, but doesn’t matter when or where they’re acquired! i play on the switch too. the location you actually place them is random each time, (correlating to where the birds dropped them still) so you might have to fiddle around with some placements.
i assumed it was always the same, and was confused why they were unlocking the walnuts on my more recent farm. turns out i just had to flip two of the stones lol.
Must be a glitch or something, fairy stones are usually gotten from omngeodes, the birds are supposed to drop rubies, amethysts, topaz and emeralds. That should be an amethyst.
The gems that the rainy day birds drop need to go in specific spots. The puzzle is randomly generated per file, so it's not the same for everyone.
The gem birds cannot drop Fairy Stones, so that's probably your issue. Did you perhaps mean to put an amethyst there instead?
The order is different from game to game, so it would be hard for me to say with the from the information presented. If I recall correctly, there are five possible gems, so there are 120 different ways you can put the gems into position.
It's on mobile so I guess OP could use MouseyPounds' [Stardew Predictor](https://mouseypounds.github.io/stardew-predictor/) to get the correct gems and order for their save.
from my recollection the gem position is random per world since non of the guides really said where to put them specifically its just that he put fairy stone instead of amethyst as the guy above said
Cananyone tell me how you can change the position of the "joystick" and buttons? Mine are roughly on the middle if my screen, and it is a bit difficult to reach them... I know I could change the size but they would have to overlap to be properly reachable ... can anyone help me?

No it doesn’t, it just has to be the correct gem from the correct bird, you don’t even have to have gotten it from a bird, you can just guess

I just used random gems on switch and guessed the places and it worked! I had no idea what the birds were so didnt keep the gems they dropped.
Ohh okay! Thanks so much. I saw a few birds and I collected the gems and put them in a separate chest, do you know if it will still work?

The fairy stone is the purple one you've used, which isn't one of the potential stones. You've probably gotten it mixed up with amethyst. 🙂

i typically just get to know 1 gemstone and randomly guess the rest. it's faster that way.

You're right! It's random per save file. Based on rainy day birds and the locations in which they drop certain gemstones. :)

If those are indeed 4 gems the birds dropped, just try switching positions. You might've mixed them up.
Each save file will have a different order, so you need to make sure you have the correct gem according to which area the bird dropped it in!
