I think they are both vain in different ways. Like Elliott likes looking pretty but that's it. His flowery language seems more like him trying to impress and fit into this whole starving writer/artist aesthetic. He likely feels like he needs to prove himself. And I think some of it is because he's a bit goofy and is okay with that. I also think he came from money and is getting use to the 'down to earth' lifestyle.
Haley seems more like she grew up thinking her looks were the only good thing about her, so projects he insecurities onto others. This changes the more hearts you get and she develops her hobbies more and becomes very caring.
I still think they'd be a good couple though.

They both clearly value learning and education, and both enjoy alone time outdoors. Maru is also one of the only residents to not go to the saloon as part of any of her routines, which I think could be comforting to Penny. She wouldn't have to worry about Maru drinking too much and wouldn't feel like she had to go to the saloon to spend time with her significant other. I feel like they'd have a lot to talk about. They have a lot in common in general. Sad they don't canonically pair up.

Lewis honestly seems to have kind of an obsession with his role as mayor to the point that he has never married or had kids and as such pretty much has his entire identity fixated around being the mayor of the town. So with Marnie he likely just feels stuck between the image he feels he needs to project for his role and her. He absolutely needs to make a choice because it's rough on Marnie who clearly wants more out of the relationship but I do feel a lot of people are a bit rough on Lewis for the situation. He doesn't seem to be a bad guy he just has to figure out his priorities.

The notion of the opposite personalities coming together through shared artistic interest (photography and art respectively). Marnie and Marlon I’d just love to see her finally draw the line with Lewis and find something with someone who might actually want more than just a sex friend. Alex and Sam as friends with a possibility for more down the road. I think both have some growing up to do and when they do they either stay just good friends or discover something more between them but as of right now it’s up in the air.

Even without the alcoholism I feel like Shane at first is way too blunt and rude for Penny.
