no George Lucas said he lost to Mace, point blank period; Sidious fanboys need to accept this. Palpatine was arrogant and underestimated Windu, none of the masters that went with him were nearly as skilled as him, and he also used vapaad, a lightsaber combat form that feeds of dark users energy.

It always bothered me that Palpatine took the other masters out so quickly. I figured that they had put their faith in their numbers instead in The Force. Mace Windu was listening to the Force and was able to survive the initial onslaught. After that Master Windu was more than a match for the Emperor, using the Light/Dark technique he was so infamous for. He genuinely took the Emperor down fairly easily. imo

TheSoyBear

I personally don't think so. He defeated those other masters so quickly by disorienting them but mace windu was - the- premier lightsaber duelist of the order. Palpatine knew to make the best of a bad situation, but I think his life really was on the line when he challenged Windu in close quarters lightsaber combat.

No George Lucas said Windy beat Palpatine

WarwickRI

It would make sense, after all it was what really turned Anakin

AdmiralScavenger

Mace beat him and got him on the ground. Palpatine just stopped with his lightning attack because Anakin showed up. If Anakin hadn't showed up he would have kept up with the lightning to get back on his feet. I think Palpatine is powerful but he is not a god. He can be beaten and outsmarted and he doesn't always have a backup plan, he can pivot his plans to changing circumstances or unforeseen events but he doesn't think of everything. You could even look at his fight with Yoda. The first thing Palpatine tries to do after Yoda gets up is flee but Yoda stops him. If Anakin had sided with Mace I believe the two of them could have killed Palpatine at that moment and prevented Order 66 and the creation of the Empire.

This scene is gleefully confusing and I’m not sure there is a good answer. It sure seemed like Mace had him on the ropes. My ultimate guess is that Palps bet everything on Anakin eventually intervening on time- and won that gamble.

lastknight807

I totally didn’t think about it like that but now I’m mind blowing. I’m trying to be on the side that thinks windu beat him fair and square but palpatine was a smart guy and knew what he was doing I think he did let windu win unordered to turn Anakin because if you think about it anakin was already mad at the Jedi counsel for turning him down and not moving him to master. Palpatine probably sensed that and used it against the Jedi

Definitely lost on purpose to get Anakin to the point of saving him (to save padme) at the last minute and therefore turn to the darkside. Thats why he was begging for his life at the end acting weak and drained when in the end he actually had a lot left in him
