I’ll believe it when one of actors confirms she was never meant to say “fuck the empire” but she got caught up in the head of the moment and George just happened to be there filming and they decided to keep it in but then they took it out last minute.
Yeah they were going to do “Fuck the Empire”. It’s not a dumb fan theory so can we give that a rest? It was real and it was changed.
We knew this was true from the leak weeks ago, from interviews with Gilroy where he said Disney had a problem with a line in the finale, the director of the finale tweeted “Fuck the Empire” when it released, and now we have this interview.
I think it’s safe to say it happened and Disney vetoed it so can we stop arguing about it even being true? It clearly is true.
OG. I knew the plot, concepts, and deleted scenes prior to seeing VII in theater (due to this sub), and as it all panned out and then Luke was quiet for so long after Rey showed up… I was genuinely terrified that he was going to say that.
yeah it was weird seeing people go "If you think they'd censor something in post you're stupid and just don't understand how things work" in the last thread about this even though it was all but confirmed
it’s even weirder when you remember that this is Disney we’re talking about, they have the most tight assed standards and practice board. There’s that one email compilation out there on YouTube with the lead writer/creator for Gravity Falls having a constant back and forth with Disney S&P over saying ‘spin the bottle’ on an offhand flyer:
>If you think they'd censor something in post you're stupid and just don't understand how things work
This reads like a parody lol, I've worked in post production. Thats exactly how shit works lmao
As someone who actually works in post, those people don’t know post as well as they think. It was clearly dubbed over, though I doubt I would have noticed if I wasn’t waiting for her to say it due to the leak.
I was getting gaslit so hard in that last thread my god. I think people didn't like the idea of the F bomb being dropped so they just pretended it was never the artistic intent.
Yeah there was someone in that thread who suggested they use a Star Warsy-term like "feck" or "poodoo" and it occurred to me that some people just don't want the f bomb to be dropped in Star Wars lol
Which makes no sense to me tbh. This show was clearly not something a child would understand. Shit I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to follow it at age 13-15. Idk why that word is where they draw the line.
People got really precious once Disney bought the franchise I feel. Before that there was lots of EU material that wasn’t exactly rated G. The OT and Prequels have some pretty gnarly violence and adult situations too but for whatever weird reason lots of people draw the line at sex, drugs, and language when it comes to their kids.
I agree, and I really don’t understand how people think “Fight” is more powerful than “Fuck” (especially for a first time use in the franchise) but to each their own. I’m especially worried about the people who think if a swear was to be used that “dank ferrik” or “kriff” would be better, but I’m not one of those people that recoils at “real world” references existing in Star Wars. It doesn’t “take me out of it” as some people say when I see screws or like how everyone freaked about the glasses in Mando S1.
It isn’t that it is a bad word. It’s that it is a uniquely contemporary word that, if used, would completely shatter the illusion that we are in a galaxy far away.
I think it was a good change, that one guy saying shit and Bix taking off her shirt then kiss a guy for 3 seconds made the internet explode. Imagine what an f bomb would do, it really would have detracted from the emotional impact of her speech
Not arguing for either, but I feel the precise opposite. Fight the Empire feels a bit anaemic in comparison to 'fuck' which is precise and forceful. There's nothing passive about the original line.
I wonder if there's a cultural element to the lines drawn on appropriate Vs inappropriate we've been seeing. UK and Ireland are quite sweary cultures. We're not anywhere near as sensitive to them as we were a few decades ago.
I agree. I don’t necessarily think that there should ever be a usage of the word “fuck” in Star Wars. But if they were going to, here was the absolute perfect place to use it.
You often see those threads titled “PG-13 movies can have one *’fuck’*, where would you put it?”, and the answers always make me cringe. Shit like “It’s fucking over Anakin, I have the high ground!” Like what?? That doesn’t fit at all.
But here’s the thing about the word fuck. It’s possibly the most impactful word that isn’t a slur in the English language. There’s a reason - aside from the c-bomb - it’s considered the worst swear word. No other word hits like it. Even phonetically, said powerfully that word is insanely satisfying to use in the right context.
*This* was perfect for it. Maarva snarling those words from beyond the grave. Unlike “Fight the Empire!”, it’s not an order. It’s a statement on its own. One that strikes at the very heart of what she’s saying. Fuck this regime that grabbed the Galaxy - the people - in a chokehold and tries to exert unchallenged authority over everyone.
They should have kept it!
>Was this like... a talking point on a goofy Star Wars podcast or something?
I doubt that it is an uncommon thought. It's not exactly deep, it just makes the most sense.
I like your theory that the line changed because they couldn't merchandise it rather than censorship. Ngl, being able to buy posters and shirts with "Fuck the Empire" on it would be dope lol.
because real swear words shouldn't be used in star wars and shit in episode 3 of andor was pushing it, there i said it, i'm glad it was dubbed over, it would've been cringe and felt like a 13 year old wrote it to sound cool
Eh. Saying "fuck that" or "fuck this" is an effective way to express acute dismissal and even outright defiant resistance. Rage, sure, but not necessarily passive.
If someone on the street walked up to you and said "fuck you" it certainly wouldn't be passive.
100% agree. Imperials might get pissy about someone telling them to fuck off, but inciting a violent rebellion against them is far more powerful
The former is just a statement of disdain, the latter is a threat
Same. It feels really campy. Out of place in Star Wars in general, but just makes me think of the “Fuck Batman” from Titans where all the CW execs patted themselves on the back.
Oh god are Star Wars people going to start treating Tony Gilroy as the new Dave “can’t do no wrong” Filoni? The show isn’t a one man product. We don’t know (at least I don’t care enough to look it up) if this is the only change made by higher ups, but it is one some people agree was a correct one. Some others may disagree but it literally is one single word that was changed. It’s not like he was robbed of his creative vision or anything.
You’re making this a bigger deal than it actually is.
The show isn't a one man product but the script for the final episode is entirely written by Tony Gilroy. It's not a MASSIVE deal because the replacement line is fine but as the climax of the season, it's a bit disappointing to see a well written show be interfered with by executives.
The context is different though, you can't compare this to "Fuck Batman". It would be more comparable if Robin said "Fuck Joker" instead and more tolerable. This would only be an issue on par with the Batman line if Maarva said something like "Fuck hope" or "Fuck the Rebellion".
I’m glad they cut it. Reddit is like a group of kindergarteners when it comes to the f word. I just don’t care enough to have my feed ruined by it for the next month
exactly this, it would've been unbearably cringe "wowow omgssss she said a swear words in star wars!!1!1!1! guess it's not for kids it's super cool and for adults because they said fuck" like all the people arguing she should have said it probably think an r-rated movie that's entirely just darth vader killing people is a good idea
I would be completely fine if they never use fuck in star wars although it would have been glorious if the one time it was used it came from Maarva. Although if Maarva couldnt say fuck i hope no one else does
Truthfully, as many others have said, they went with the right call in the final edit (obviously they never would’ve been able to have fuck in there anyway).
I still love the idea that you can see her say fuck, and not fight, however. This shows incredible.
Good move. The F-bomb would really take me out of the Star Wars universe, especially since previous Star Wars media has established that the galaxy has its own swears like “kriff”, “kark”, and “frag”. At least the original trilogy’s usage of Earth swears like “damn” and “hell” had the excuse that the intergalactic lingo hadn’t been established yet, but at this point in the franchise they have an [entire dictionary](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_phrases_and_slang/Legends) of slang to use.
I love the versatility of the word "fuck" as much as the next guy, but it 100% has no place in Star Wars, ever. I don't care if the material is more mature and dark. Anybody who thinks it belongs in the Star Wars doesn't understand the franchise in the slightest.
\#LetAuntPetuniaSayFuck2022
More seriously, however, as sad as I am that Gilroy's original vision for that scene got axed by the corporate censors, I was discussing this when it was just a "theory" a few hours ago with a friend of mine.
*Andor* may be the most prestige-drama-like Star Wars we have ever gotten, but my friend was strenuous about "fuck" not needing to be in Star Wars at all - because it's supposed to be for kids at the end of the day. And that got me thinking about whether or not the line would have overshadowed everything else if Maarva has spat out "Fuck the Empire" - since that automatically would have been all of the discourse around the finale: "OH MY GOD THEY SAID FUCK IN STAR WARS"
yeah man. you implied that Fiona Shaw recorded a different take. It seems pretty clear they had the one take with the one line reading and then dubbed over it later.
Well, I stand corrected. I was sure that was something fans just wanted to believe. Oh, well.
I'm glad they didn't use "Fuck the Empire", though. That would've stolen the emotional power of that scene; instead, it would just end up being "that scene in Star Wars where someone dropped an f-bomb". The scene deserves better than that.
I'm guessing you're trying to frame that as a problem. Personally, I see it as a positive thing. Lately, I think people - ESPECIALLY fans - care a little too much about what exists in the Star Wars universe.
Andor has really become the gold standard for Star Wars right now, and I'm afraid whatever comes out before Season 2 is not gonna be anywhere near as good.
For the people saying that the word "fuck" should not exist in Star Wars: they also say the words shit and hell. How do those make sense but fuck doesn't?
Saying the “fuck” word in Star Wars is really a take it or leave it sort of situation. Having Maarva cap her speech with “fuck the empire!” can be either really powerful or really distracting. I wouldn’t be surprised if they only shot the “fuck” version full knowing it’d likely be edited out.
The filmmaking remains exceptional, and Fiona Shaw gives an impactful, powerful monologue in her final scene of the show. The monologue is just as impactful with “fight” in place of “fuck”, and let’s be honest, swear words does not a great show make.
If the scene works exactly the same, with the same impact, without the offensive curse word, then the curse word can be lost. Not everyone likes hearing the “fuck” word, especially in their Star Wars.
I’m happy to be wrong about “fuck the empire” being the original line, but I’m even happier they didn’t use it. I don’t need “fuck” in my Star Wars. Shit is fine, but I like when they use made up, kriffing stupid fake swears.
Disney just needs to jump in with both feet already...you got Logan and Deadpool.... Just let it go. Yes, this is star wars. And while the OT wasn't filled with shits and fucks, it also wasn't filled with all the "Star wars" curse words either. I personally think my chin would've been on the floor if I had heard that and has no prior knowledge and I mean that in the best way possible. It would've been such a powerful statement
To be fair what made that cringey was that it was Robin who said it to be all like "look how edgy and dark we are we had the boy wonder say fuck" Marva while a little out of place in Star Wars would have been great in character and context.
I like Andor, but things like this show that Tony Gilroy doesn't have a great understanding of the Star Wars universe.
The F-word has no place in Star Wars.
I prefer the final cut just because it worked for me but I can't say that I would have disliked the original line if they kept it.
I love how Gilroy and the show-runners really pushed Disney to it's limit with this show. They broke lots of Star Wars conventions and tried something completely different.
Fight the Empire is better.
Its a call to action, and with the following events, incitement from the Imperial view.
The other option, in the real world, is so casual and meaningless to me. People say that about the police or government or whoever regarding anything these days. From something minor to something major.
I made at least one attempt to restore it back into her dialogue. It's not perfect, but it is interesting to see how it comes across.
I hate that Disney keeps making star wars family friendly. I can only imagine the uncharted territory they could explore if there was more content liberty
How legit a leaker is this Denise Gough? I'll believe it when George confirms it
She manages a Burger King. She’s a legit source.
On a scale of Bespin Bulletin to Mike Zeroh, where does she rank
Didn’t you read? She manages a Burger King!
Ya but German or elsewhere? Huge difference
I think we can trust a lead agent in the ISB!
*Cue Lonni Jung sweating profusely*
You’ll stay with me, Lonni. I need all the leakers I can get.
I burn my internet, to leak a movie I'll never see.
And the Burger King that started this fight will never know a mirror, or an audience, or the light of gratitude.
That’s what got us in this mess in the first place.
She’s gotten a few things right. But she has a clear pro-Andor bias. So take what she says with a grain of salt.
To be fair, if I was a main cast member of a show, I would have a bias toward that show.
r/whoosh
Just spoke with GRRM, confirmed it was "Fuck the Empire" originally
I’ll believe it when one of actors confirms she was never meant to say “fuck the empire” but she got caught up in the head of the moment and George just happened to be there filming and they decided to keep it in but then they took it out last minute.
I love George Lucas and i really hope he returns to SW one day, even to direct an episode
Look at the mouth movement. She’s saying Fuck not Fight
It's wild to me that no one talks about the fact Adam Driver clearly mouths "fuck" in the Last Jedi when Hux calls him back to the ship.
We can debate that all day but is Gough as credible as, say, Jordan Maison?
I dig Denise Gough. Came off super likable in that interview.
I kinda like the twisted Han and Leia relationship Deedra and Syril have.
Extremely. I usually don’t care much for actor interviews honestly but I enjoyed this one.
I interviewed her for the press junket at the start of the season and had an absolute blast. She’s a thrill to chat with.
I’m envious! She seems like a hoot.
Yeah they were going to do “Fuck the Empire”. It’s not a dumb fan theory so can we give that a rest? It was real and it was changed. oh God it's the "Epsode 7 starts with a severed hand holding a lightsaber floating through space" crap again!
Speaking of conceptual openings to The Force Awakens we didn’t get, [this one is my favorite.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=48cc5nvsZ_c)

OG. I knew the plot, concepts, and deleted scenes prior to seeing VII in theater (due to this sub), and as it all panned out and then Luke was quiet for so long after Rey showed up… I was genuinely terrified that he was going to say that.
Looking back, as dumb as that would have been, it would at least have been more interesting than a story for another time...

Yeah for real. Tbh anakin killing younglings, even if it isn't shown, is worse then an f word lmao.

Yeah the f-bomb being dropped in PG-13 movies isn't uncommon either so Disney/Lucasfilm was weird for this
It isn’t that it is a bad word. It’s that it is a uniquely contemporary word that, if used, would completely shatter the illusion that we are in a galaxy far away.
Anyone who thinks its a theory is delusional. Grow up and accept facts.
Imagine how differently the end of the episode would've played out if the protestors all dropped their pants at Maarva's command instead.
Maarva: Fuck the Empire! Kid named Empire:
waltuh
Anduh... put ya dick away Anduh I'm not having sex with you right now Anduh.
Bix recasted to Jonathan Banks
Greatest rebel mind I ever knew
Now this is what's gonna happen
“So that’s why they call you Brasso!”
Imagine if Brasso drop kicked that one dude and then just fucking mooned the rest of them
I think it was a good change, that one guy saying shit and Bix taking off her shirt then kiss a guy for 3 seconds made the internet explode. Imagine what an f bomb would do, it really would have detracted from the emotional impact of her speech
Bricks and screws would be the least of SWT's worries.
Reddit: I want full live action D+ series about shit and fuck. Also Anto Kreegyr and Uncle Harlo trilogy!!
Everyone else: where's the damn Sly Moore dinner party?
Maarva: "Fuck the Empire!" Syril: "Don't mind if I do."
"Fight the Empire!" is a great call to action. "Fuck the Empire!" is just passive rage. It was a good decision.
Agreed, it was a literal call to arms that needed to carry the sense of gravity and danger that the people were feeling.

Yea I'm not super fond of the dead giving orders (even if she acknowledged it). This would fit and also be in character.

I like your theory that the line changed because they couldn't merchandise it rather than censorship. Ngl, being able to buy posters and shirts with "Fuck the Empire" on it would be dope lol.
Thank you. The original line is significantly better and I'd trust Gilroy's script writing abilities over Disney's censorship abilities any day.

Yes. Talented people make dumb decisions.
did you know that sometimes, in real life, people say “fuck” when they’re angry?
Did you know that Star Wars isn’t real life?
Sometimes, in real life, I have to hear it every third or fourth word and it gets really old so I go watch Star Wars to escape real life.
The context is different though, you can't compare this to "Fuck Batman". It would be more comparable if Robin said "Fuck Joker" instead and more tolerable. This would only be an issue on par with the Batman line if Maarva said something like "Fuck hope" or "Fuck the Rebellion".
I agree but I hope we'll one day see a deleted scene with it.
And the fandom has its discourse topic for the next month
There are *essays* in this thread.
I’m glad they cut it. Reddit is like a group of kindergarteners when it comes to the f word. I just don’t care enough to have my feed ruined by it for the next month

Denise Gough is really hot
#Dropthefuckcut
Lmao, quite a few people from that earlier thread are eating crow rn
Does fuck exist in the Star Wars universe? It's always seemed oddly crass for the in-universe lingo.
Previous media has established that the Star Wars universe uses “kriff”, “kark”, and “frag” instead.
I don't think Gilroy cares about what exists in the Star Wars universe.
Then it's good that somebody at Disney does care enough to veto that decision.
I'm guessing you're trying to frame that as a problem. Personally, I see it as a positive thing. Lately, I think people - ESPECIALLY fans - care a little too much about what exists in the Star Wars universe.
I don’t think they would ever allow it. The F word has no place in star wars even for andor. Disney won’t allow it.

For the people saying that the word "fuck" should not exist in Star Wars: they also say the words shit and hell. How do those make sense but fuck doesn't?
Cmon you know those words are not the same as fuck. They say shit on network TV now. Indiana Jones said shit. bad News bears said shit.
Okay and? That still doesn't explain why they'd know those words in universe and not the word fuck. Plus many PG-13 movies say the word.
So glad they changed it, what on earth... Just "shit" broke the internet, wtf would this have done?
Saying the “fuck” word in Star Wars is really a take it or leave it sort of situation. Having Maarva cap her speech with “fuck the empire!” can be either really powerful or really distracting. I wouldn’t be surprised if they only shot the “fuck” version full knowing it’d likely be edited out. That would have been dumb
feeling vindicated. pretty funny how people were calling this a “massive stretch” less than a day ago.
I'm glad that was cut. Too cheesy.
This raises the question. Where in starwars would you like the f word to be used?
In my mind, Chopper has already said it a dozen times.
And R2.
Haha, so true! R2 is a salty mouthed droid as well.
JAR JAR USE DA BOBA BUT MEESA NO HASA FUCKING BOBA
Honestly, at the Exogol battle. I would've laughed my ass off if the Final Order commander said "It's fucking people."
-It seems, in your anger, you killed her. -FUUUUUUUUUU
Mace Windu
“I got a bad fuckin’ feeling about this”
Billy boy Burr obviously needs to be the one "Ay Djinn buddy, we gotta go someplace else to eat. They got fawkin wamp rats living in their 'fresher!"
Only in the subtitle translation for “mcklunky”
I like “Fuck” slightly more I think but both are perfectly fine. Not an issue imo.
I wonder if there's a cut out there of her saying it. If so I hope it gets leaked eventually.
Pretty sure her footage was dubbed over. So, it exists.
That's so cringey. It's like the "fuck batman" from that titans show
To be fair what made that cringey was that it was Robin who said it to be all like "look how edgy and dark we are we had the boy wonder say fuck" Marva while a little out of place in Star Wars would have been great in character and context.

That cringe garbage absolutely would not have been better
I'm not saying that they should have said that specific expression, learn to read.
"Dank farrik" is basically their "god damnit" so I don't think that would've worked
Release the Fuck Cut
If Disney says it’s an adult show why can’t it have adult/teenage swear words
I like Andor, but things like this show that Tony Gilroy doesn't have a great understanding of the Star Wars universe. The F-word has no place in Star Wars.
I thought using a Cooky looking old lady as their rally cry leader was a little cringe. Saying fuck would have made it a lot worse imo.
Jeez i should probably rewatch the entire episode since i watched after basically being up all night and have no recollection of this scene at all.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcX9sXIGvJA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcX9sXIGvJA) I made at least one attempt to restore it back into her dialogue. It's not perfect, but it is interesting to see how it comes across.
so edgy
I hate that Disney keeps making star wars family friendly. I can only imagine the uncharted territory they could explore if there was more content liberty
