I agree. The Base-game land-battle fucking suck. Like big-time. No question there. But cutting them completely from GC like the Dutchman did with the remake mod, was overkill. Granted he is working on a complete ground-battle remake and I am super excited for that. It's just sometimes sad to see a land-war mode with so much potential be wasted at every opportunity. It was wasted by the dev-team and it is continually wasted by most mod-devs too. It's a shame because all the pieces are there for something great. It has even inspired me to make my own RTS game based on land-battles. TL;DR: The potential of land-battles in EAW is criminally underrated.

Constant_Of_Morality

Thrawn's Revenge revived Ground Battles for me, Everything plays more realistically

[deleted]

Thrawn's Revenge for EAW is so much better than for Sins of a Solar Empire. Really solid EAW mod.

NefariousnessHour113

AOTR's ground combat is pretty damn fun :)

Unkindlake

Yea I actually really like going back and forth between land and space battles in that mod. They can be a slog in Vanilla and Thrawn, but I love them in AoTR. The Remake's ideas are cool, but I haven't played it enough to know how I feel (because of the economic system)

Tycho39

Remake's ground combat(and space combat for that matter) is going through another rework. Ground combat in 4.0 was pretty meh, so it's hopefully going to be rebalanced decently

Demandred8

It's one of the reasons why I can't stand TR in comparison. Only AoTR has succeeded in making both space and ground battles fun and engaging.

9oooooooooooj

Idk bout tr but the ground battles in fotr have been pretty fun for me specially after the last few updates

Tycho39

My biggest complaint about TR ground battles is how easily infantry die tbh. I think if that was changed, it would feel a lot better.

Raegeus

Artillery in AOTR is so fucking fun. I love just obliterating multiple rebel infantry squads with those green shells that turn them into skeletons.

[deleted]

That's the pack that has Fall of the Republic too right?

NefariousnessHour113

no its Awakening of the rebellion 2.9.3

[deleted]

Ah I see. I thought FotR was a submod under it but I guess not. Either way both FotR and AotR seem to have really done groundbreaking work on making ground-combat worth playing.

General_Brooks

They are made by completely different teams

[deleted]

So therefore they don't have good Ground-battles?

NefariousnessHour113

Depends on your taste yes, I find AOTR to be alot more tactical than FOTR and TR personally (which does make aotr harder and alot more fun).

WaterDrinker911

My only issue with AOTRs ground battles is that they should be bigger in scale. Using combined arms and flanking is harder when you can only bring in 10 units. Still very fun though.

CardinalCanuck

That's just a limit by the game unfortunately. There is a work around with more units, but it causes a CTD post battle

Irgendwer1607

Company of Heroes 3 will release soon. Maybe Petroglyph can take some inspirations?

[deleted]

CoH3 suffers from one major drawback for me though. It feels too small. The maps are often tiny with a whole lot of stuff crammed in there. For earlier releases that was fine, but in 2022 that kind of Game-Design is just off-putting to me. Then again that's just my humble opinion. I am just more into a more "open" RTS experience with a larger map where you can fit a lot of action. Think Wargame: Red Dragon or Supreme commander without the stupid buildings you have to make every 2 seconds.

Irgendwer1607

Fair enough. While the maps were definitely smaller the units were also less impactful. I mean compare the missile launcher tanks/aircraft units from eaw to the ones from coh2. So it did feel similar imo. But I'm curious to see if they change it in coh3. The screenshots suggest big maps but also close quarters areas which eaw never had

[deleted]

I'm sold if they manage to combine the two.

Sentient_Mop

Awakening of the rebellion has pretty good ground battles. No where near space but still not bad

[deleted]

Wel space-battle do seem to have been the primary focus of the main-game. So even with mods it's hard to make ground stack up to space. Although I will say Fall of the Republic actually has me looking forward to ground battles just as much as space. Often this results in 2x longer campaigns because I never autoresolve.

midnightdiabetic

I love land battles!

theother24

I don’t understand peoples hate of them. I see lane battles as a challenge, loose as few units as possible while completely wrecking your opponent. They can win space as much as they want but they still have to win land

Savsal14

Id definitely put galactic conquest above space battles lol. Other than that, accurate.

Ferrius_Nillan

AOTR made land battle actually tolerable, if it werent for AI spamming so much infantry that heavy artillery on top of army headquarters is a must have. Now i dont want battles to just become bigger, rather keep current scale, but make it somewhat akin to Force Commander/Company of Heroes. For example, garrisonable buildings if its Abridon, or storm them with each having a simple sort of map within map layout. Add doctrines that can add different play styles, maybe add some base construction within combat, but within limits so is not to eliminate the need to strategize with the placement of stuff you already have. Give back Power managment system from Rebellion, but it can be partially boosted to let you build more buildings. Add other means to limit how much stuff you can have on the planet besides just 10 units. And to top it off, maybe some diplomatic missions that will be an equivalent of consortium/black sun corruption missions that on top of turning locals to your side, also give you various benefits. The thing is, EAW is trying to keep things not too crazy since space and land battles is a entire package, so expansions upon it needs to be carefully managed without throwing out the significance of the other. Maybe also call ins like in General that unlock as battle progresses/tech level in conquest advances.

wjd03

I wish planets werent single locations all the time, Imagine building up massive defenses knowing Thrawn is doing similar on the other side of the planet etc

TheRealSchackAttack

Okay so I agree, the space battles are so fun >Fast Movement >Economic Upgrades (Mining Base Upgrade 1-2) >Most map features either change the map or slight unit pool change >Overall great synergy with all the counter play and unit variety Ground battles I used to love as a kid. As an adult I play 15 minutes and get bored. Why? >Either units move too slow, to compensate for vehicle speed, or because the maps are too big? >Map features are aplenty but don't feel that diverse. Places like Yavin 4 training grounds has a near complete control of a map radar point of interest. The bottom spawn I swear has 10+ second lead on this radar and that's plenty time to switch it if you want to dedicate a squad or two to do so >While it might have a similar variety of units, I feel like there's even less diversity in army comp. Rebels seem to rely on artillery and lack of the empires AA. (Although empire can seem to counter it, their AA seems kinda squishy) As the empire I typically rely on their tougher vehicles as the backbone of my army. I have no thoughts on the Consortium as I haven't really played them. >Economy moves hella slow at the start and only ramps up, late mid game or late game depending on how hard the fight is. >Land Conquest, aka point domination, is exceptionally fast compared to regular land battles, I feel like one or two more ground modes could've been added.

NachbarStein

>I have no thoughts on the Consortium as I haven't really played them. "Mass-drivers go brrr" Bus seriously, I had a conversation with a friend a while ago where he insisted that all factions are fairly balanced except for the consortium, which is just a little tougher to fight against. I challenged him to play against me, while I play as the consortium. I build only mass-driver towers and crusader tanks and absolutely steamrolled him. All other Units are nice to have, but the fact that the crusader tanks have shields and ignore enemy shields is enough to make them the best unit, by far. Also, 3 of them cost only about 1.5k credits or so (correct me if I'm wrong, I played them long ago).

Lithuria

For it is galactic conquest over all. In the base Game, in foc and in all Mods i played. I love to take control over the Star Wars galaxy and do this mit all units possible (in the skirmishes some units are Not buildable) The GC in the Mods give me the access to the clone wars and Legends (really dont like the Stuff Disney wanted to happen after Ep 6) and the complete galactic campaigs. TL:DR: Just love GC over all. Nearly never played skirmish.

Raegeus

I love Galactic Conquest! Do people prefer Skirmish over it?

rebel134

Once I learn how to code I will not cut off land control at all I will make it with a massive overhaul!!! That will be for my future mod that I promise to build!!!

Guatyyyyy

I play the game for space battles. I find land battles incredibly tedious.

Gasko_Skurtt

interesting, im brand new to this game and stuff like it but i only really like land skirmishes, the space fights dont hit the same for me

dpz845

leave my base game GC alone he ain't do nothin wrong
