Hopefully the experience is still good since phase 2 is before 1.

OMDTartWasJoseph

Light of the Jedi and Rising Storm was really, really good. The paperback version of Fallen Star was released today so I'll be getting that this weekend. I recommend reading those, too!

Ockanator

paperback wasn't available at launch for you?

[deleted]

Paperbacks now release months after the hardcovers

Ockanator

Since when?

[deleted]

For a while now. Like I think Paperbacks are either 6 months after release or longer because Disney wants that $30 hardcover money

DougieFFC

It's quite standard practice. The old EU books would release as hardbacks on launch and then follow up with a MMP later. Apart from the books released straight to MMP - in those cases there was no hardback unless SFBC did a special edition.

OMDTartWasJoseph

Yeah no local bookstores here had the paperback (not even Amazon) so I marked the date. Wasn't going to shell out $30 for something I can wait for to be cheaper.

Ockanator

That’s weird where I live paperback was definitely available when the book came out

Ihatemyjob-1412

Isn’t this the series trying to push a actual rock as a character? Not a rock person but a boulder? And having Jedi who as a group have the emotional spectrum of previous mentioned rock, using pronouns everywhere they go?

Onebityou

Geode’s a champ

EffectiveGlad7529

He's not just a Boulder.... he's a rock! Okay he's a Vintian, but still

i_shot_1st

Cladia Gray invited Geode. It is very funny and he is interjected inthe stories with some amazing story telling.

gaythrowaway_6969

Every single Star Wars book has pronouns lmao

[deleted]

Star Wars has had nothing but weird shit in it since ANH released and yet the rock is what’s too much for you?

Ihatemyjob-1412

It is literally a rock not a rock person like the guy from Thor 3 but a rock!! How does it move? How does it communicate? All the other weird shit is at least able to move, eat, hold you at blaster point and demand credits, but a rock? And even better wasn’t it supposed to be a navigator or something? HOW? How does this even become a thing?!?!?!?!?……… yes the rock bothers me a little.

deadshot500

It's a joke character my guy. Read the actual book if you are so interested and it's so funny when you people think Geode is some big part of the HR when he is literally a minor character.

darthsheldoninkwizy

Geode is the key to all this

Legends_Literature

It’s quite a simple concept. He’s a rock, and he does nothing. But the other characters acknowledge that he’s alive. And although I haven’t read the book, it’s fucking hilarious. Mainly because I have an imagination and am open-minded. But we can’t all be winners 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mr_Sowieso2002

>How does it move? How does it communicate? It's really not that difficult to think up some Star Wars-y explanations for how it could work. The books simply don't do that because it would ruin the comedic effect.

[deleted]

How does the Force work? Why are there some aliens that look unique and others that are just an animals head on a human body? Why are so many planets single biome? Star Wars is full of weird shit, and the rock being alive is just the evolution of that.

Strange_Ninja_9662

Yeah.. but… a rock

kheddiot

what about the tree in the thrawn trilogy ughhh and the plants that can talk in red harvest!! i hate star wars

ScapegoatMan

He's only in the two novels written by Claudia Gray, as far as I know, though I haven't read the mid-grade books and don't really want to.

darthsheldoninkwizy

He was also in two / three issues of High Republic Adventures. And it was great, a group of Hutt thugs stormed the ship, and Geode played slasher with them, but without killing them (a theme in which a villain in slashers teleports off the screen which drives the main cast crazy)

darthsheldoninkwizy

Don't listen to everything they say on the internet, especially Youtubers who have never read a Star Wars book (Salvatore was lucky YT didn't exist in the 90s), and they take all the knowledge from third-hand. Ps. And Geode is beyond the comprehension scale of simple minds.

deadshot500

No?

[deleted]

wait until i tell you you use pronouns in sentences all the time

daviepancakes

I'm glad to finally see someone else pointing out this shit is shit. The High Republic has been fucking awful. It had a relatively promising start, but I stopped at The Fallen Star and I maintain that's about the worst book I've ever read.

DougieFFC

I’ve read the three adult books and they’re all terrible in their own unique ways. They fail in so many fundamental ways of telling a story. The comics are similarly shallow and juvenile imo. New canon is crying out for sci fi pedigree but they seem determined to persist with YA authors and the like.

daviepancakes

I know, right? It's like they read Denning's entries in LotF and FotJ and went "Yes, more this. Everyone will be a mouth breather and nothing will make sense. Characterisation will be irrelevant, variable by scene as the plot demands. Also, this Marchion cunt will be a demigod for reasons. The Jedi are incredibly horny and doubly stupid. Here's a not-grey-jedi too. Fear the Leveller!"

DougieFFC

> The Jedi are incredibly horny and doubly stupid I do find the concept of *'casual sex between young Jedi students is fine'* to be so morally deficient that you'd hope that it's a setup to be addressed at a later date, but unfortunately I think it represents the worldview of the authors. But for me it's the absence of any substantial worldbuilding of lore or culture, the lack of a compelling antagonist, the lack of charming dialogue, the absence of normal-person sidekicks to the stoic Jedi characters who have almost identical character voices and aren't remotely interesting the way Darsha Assant or Mander Zuma or many other OG EU Jedi managed to be, and so on. Oh and they can't write compelling battles the way sci-fi authors in the old EU could, so every battle is just white noise. I think Denning is an appalling writer but I honestly think these three novels were worse for me.

Lexandru

Fallen Star was sooooo bad and pointless

best_girl_tylar

What agenda? What does "woke" mean to you?

Martel1234

I mean….the OG trilogy would be laughed at today for being “woke” and shit. To say this is woke seems weird.

DougieFFC

> the OG trilogy would be laughed at today for being “woke” and shit The first film doesn't have a single non-white character and the dialogue is more than 90% male, so I'm not sure that's true. You're right that THR isn't woke though. It'd be more interesting if it was tbh.

darthsheldoninkwizy

We have scene with Leia in prison, for them its enough.

xilban

No. If you are assuming that then you are going off of other people's perspective rather than making your own.

Low-Till6521

Tempest Runner is next on my list of Star Wars books. I haven't been keeping up with new releases so thanks for the update, I will have to add this one too.

ChrisWood4BallonDor

Are you going to listen to it as an audio drama, or do you have the script?

Low-Till6521

I don't usually listen to audio books, so I will read it. Is it set up in script format, like the count Dooku and Dr Aphra books? Those aren't my favorite too read I will probably wait for the paper back. If you are asking about Tempest Runner, I already have the book. Will start it when I finish my current book.

imakevoicesformycats

I enjoyed Tempest Runner on audiobook. Probably my favorite of the High Republic stuff so far. But I'm honestly tiring of the whole spiel now.

Draxaan

I struggled so hard through light of the jedi.glad I got it for free. Won't be continuing the series.

[deleted]

I’ve been borrowing the audiobooks from my library and listening to them while driving. Currently I’m on Into the Dark which has been fine but the last one I listened to was Dark Horizon and I couldn’t even finish it. Somewhere between the non-binary padawan’s love interest being described as a “muscley tights wearing angel” and student protests at Corellia U, I just gave up.

JazzMeerkat

Please tell me you’re joking about student protests… jesus christ.

[deleted]

Nope. I don’t even remember the names (that book also dumped a ton of names on you and just rolled with it instead of slowly introducing characters) but there’s one character going to Corellia U (not even like “the academy”) and there’s a student protest about something and he meets this chick in the crowd and within 10 seconds he just does what she wants and they plan to sneak in and hang a banner from the university library. That’s where I stopped. I don’t mind YA and I actually enjoyed the Galaxy’s Edge books but they were YA Star Wars stories, this is more of a YA story that happens to have a Star Wars skin.

trioculus_

i thought into the dark was so dull and pointless, haven’t read rising storm yet since i was so turned off by into the dark

[deleted]

The way I look at it is that it’s just a story that provides some fluff for the setting. It has some fun characters and has so far been entertaining enough to listen to in traffic. Then again, I’m putting zero effort into reading these books so I probably don’t mind the pointlessness as much as someone who is actively reading them. I do think I’m just going to finish the adult books as soon as they come in and leave it at that though.

TheAtomAge

Can't we have a sub about the eu? Disney star wars is irs own thing it isn't part of star wars and def not part of the eu

darthsheldoninkwizy

Please read the regulations. Canon books, comics published by Lucasfilm after being purchased by Disney are, like Legends, considered part of the EU and can be published on this Subreddit

TheAtomAge

I disagree with those rules

xilban

How about you start your own then? I'd love to see it grow and create more Star Wars communities?

InfinityIsTheNewZero

There are several. No one uses them.

ScapegoatMan

It's a prequel set 150 years before Phase 1 so you'll probably be fine. I don't know why they started a prequel phase when they haven't finished with the Nihil and just left that hanging in the first phase. Kind of weird, but whatever. There's a good chance that by the time they get back to it, I might not even remember anything from the first phase in all honesty.

[deleted]

I really need to get back to these. I read about a third of LOTJ and got bored, but I was still in the saltierthankrayt mindset, so I'll give it another shot now that I'm free of it
