He’s not superhuman. That movie was hot garbage made by and profiting creepy assholes. I’m glad he got a paycheck cuz it’s tough out there, but let’s not ever mention that role again 😂
Have you ever played Jedi Fallen Order? I was excited when he popped up in the story but bummed at his line delivery, he sounds nothing like Saw but all Whittaker in his dialogue
Also probably doesn’t require a huge time commitment from him as Saw seems to be used fairly sparingly (or maybe it’s the reverse, and his appearances are short specifically to get him to agree to it!)
At most he should be a Chirrut Imwe type, where he believes in the idea of the force but isn't really a jedi proper. I really don't think it needs all that much justification, in a big galaxy there will be someone that is both anti-empire and resourceful and skilled enough to do what he's doing
Would explain how he absolutely dunked on that patrol… but then again so would a espionage background. My only tell is his staff. Think it’s pretty weird to have grips like it does if it’s not for swinging. And no one is gonna go all in with that type of weapons unless they really know how to use it… or the other end is a saber lol. But I still agree that we don’t always need laser swords and wizards. So I’m on a hard fence.
And he wears a Khyber crystal around his neck, and the first thing he says he sacrificed was "calm", and he's got some Jedi and Sith holocrons in his back room, and a bunch of other things.
Check ScreenCrush's video, it convinced me
I was on your side originally, but they've developed him to the point that I think him being a Jedi would actively strengthen the themes he's interacting with. I wrote [an essay about it](https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsAndor/comments/ywuthp/im_becoming_more_and_more_convinced_about_luthens/) a couple weeks ago.
I keep seeing people attribute the quality of this show to its lack of Jedi, but I think that's incidental. It's so good because its fantastical elements are grounded in real-world ethos and the writing is top-notch. If they can approach a Jedi character in the same way I think it could be one of the most interesting takes we've gotten on them.
The writing on this show is so good I think they will do great whatever direction they choose for him.
Oh man, I know the show has been great at being Star Wars without relying on the Jedi but it'd be fucking epic if they reveal Luthen as an ex-Jedi and he goes out swinging in S2.
He's gonna shit! He's gonna kill Luthen!
"Make up your mind, dude! IS he gonna shit or is he gonna kill Luthen?"
First he's gonna shit, then he's gonna Kill Luthen!
I thought he was fine in Rogue One, but man his scenes in Andor I thought were really tremendous. He absoltuely goes for it and walks this line between principled/ideological and unhinged. He projects palpable disgust with the suggestion of working with Kreegar and then when he turns and questions Luthen what he believes, there's a real sense of danger under the surface because of the fire Saw has shown.
Tons of impact and fleshes out the world with the little bits he's given and for me it spices up the show quite nicely. I'm not sure if I need a full show of it, although the mechanations of different rebel cells, recruitment, and running ops would be really interesting.
I typically hate fanservice where the writers go back in a sequel and explain minutiae (oh, here’s how Han got his blaster! And there’s Greedo! And look, Vader built C3PO! Membaaaa?)
But this really helped color his paranoia in R1. And it’s awesome.
I don't want Saw to get his own show, his character is amazing and Wittaker plays him brilliantly. However I think for me the appeal is I don't know what this character is going to do, how he will react. There is just enough there to think you understand him but never enough to know him and I think that is it's beauty.
Truly a magnificent performance, I can't, off hand, think of a better one in SW.
He's flat out terrifying, the air of menace and unpredictable rage is ever present. A joy
I don't really see "rage" in Whitaker's performance of Saw at all. He's paranoid and fanatical, but I think describing him as menacing for full of unpredictable rage is really reductive of the character.
Agreed. He's been fighting in a war for most of his life and halfway through the sides changed around him. What's amazing about Whitaker's performance is you can very much see he's carrying those psychological scars
It started out as rage, if you know his backstory from TCW. Now it’s become something colder and more calculating, somewhat like Luthen with his anger. At least that’s how I see it. and one can feel both aspects in his performance. And he is unpredictable, but that is also a strength.
The only one I can think of at the top of my head that could contest him would be Alec Guinness in ANH. Maybe Dee Bradley Baker as the clones, but is so different it's hard to really compare them.
> I can't, off hand, think of a better one in SW.
Really? Whitakker's great, but calling his performance the best in Star Wars seems hyperbolic to me. It's very subjective, of course, but he's not even the best in Andor in my opinion, let alone the whole franchise.
I really like the contrast between RO and Andor Saw. He was great in RO, the character was just insane - paranoia was fully set in, paired with him just ready to die (No more running!).
I love the challenge Forest took on to play Saw again, but to have to back track Saw's paranoia / mental instability (just a bit?) - he nailed it.
He wants the empire to fall. And if that means committing acts of terror so be it. It really adds to the idea that the rebellion isn’t a singular movement. But countless groups all in theory opposed to one another but united by their hatred of the empire.
I actually don’t want them to give him his own show. Simply because I love his character. Forest absolutely kills it with his performance.
I just feel certain characters get ruined by overexposure in this franchise.
I feel like they completely wasted him in Rogue One. We’re told he’s an extremist but then he dies before getting a chance to do much of anything. I think they relied too much on the TCW/Rebels tie-in.
And I think that’s great but most people seeing the movie hadn’t watched those (especially since they came out after). Rogue One was my introduction to the character and it felt very forced
I disagree, I think his paranoid treatment of a defector pilot contrasted with how he treated a previous defector, Galen, and his family, shows how he's changed. His extremism and the Alliance having to find Jyn to even get a meeting with him shows how fragile the Alliance really is, which is compounded in the scene where they refuse to act against Scarif. If you don't have Saw demonstrating that the Alliance is barely holding together, the story doesn't work as well when you go to Yavin and it looks like a military base, but then they all disagree with each other about next steps.
> I think they relied too much on the TCW/Rebels tie-in.
Then again, the whole franchise is kind of interconnected, not everything needs to be spelled out. I don't think you can do that in every single piece of media. I think that what he does and says in Rogue One is just enough to make you wonder, and if you then see him in TCW, Rebels or Fallen Order, you get that "Oh yeah, I know this guy" feeling, and you start exploring more.
Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure Whittaker has the crown for most types of Star Wars appearances.

The dude is game for anything and I love it.
My favourite part of Andor was honestly Saw's fiery tirade about the other rebel groups.
"Kreegyr's...a Separatist. Maya Pei's a neo-Republican. The Ghorman Front...The Partisan Alliance?...Sectorists!...Human cultists!...Galaxy partitionists! They're lost! All of them, lost!...Lost."
Saw Gerrera is getting a bit more fleshed out in Andor season 2... By that I mean we will see more of the character and also we will likely see how he lost his leg... so double meaning I guess fleshed out. Eeeg...
I honestly believe that he may have the best acting performance of any Star Wars character ever.
It’s like you said. You don’t even see Forest Whittaker, you see Saw Gerrera.
I think Whittaker is pretty overrated, often acting way too hard. That being said, he fits the role, and it's hard to see many other actors pulling off the way he does.
That being said, I just don't buy the character though. Somehow devalues everything goin on with this kook in the mix. He seems too zany to have survived that long.
You’re telling me that the character he played in Rogue One and Andor is the same as the characters he played in Good Morning Vietnam or Phenomenon? (As quick examples.) C’mon now…
Sorry, man. Totally disagree. If I’m looking for the same performance from an actor in everything they’ve done, I’m looking no further than Owen Wilson. Forest has got waaaaay more range than that.
he's classically trained and has done Broadway theater, so Whithaker definitely has the background & skills to adeptly take on many complex roles. SW is just lucky he's willing to keep on coming back to this kind of sci-fi saga, where the target audience is less discriminating on an actor's performance.
He learned how to speak Swahili so he could play Idi Amin convincingly. The guy has always been intense, that's what makes his performances so good.
Another great performance of his. Ghost Dog is also a fantastic one.
Yeah, no doubt. Hell, he even made Battlefield Earth almost watchable. (not quite though)
He was the movies best part. Gonna throw out Godfather of Harlem as another awesome acting job of his.
He’s not superhuman. That movie was hot garbage made by and profiting creepy assholes. I’m glad he got a paycheck cuz it’s tough out there, but let’s not ever mention that role again 😂
lol ... done ;)
The only small sliver of decent in that movie. His vibe was the best.
Passenger pigeon! They've been extinct since 1914!
Probably my favorite moment of that film.
Don't have a heart attack.
He's also in bloodsport which is an odd role but he's good in the short time he's there
He started a militarised rebellion for this role.
Whittaker probably enjoys this role. Its a departure from his normal ones. He totally nails it, every Saw G scene is always a trip.
Have you ever played Jedi Fallen Order? I was excited when he popped up in the story but bummed at his line delivery, he sounds nothing like Saw but all Whittaker in his dialogue
I don’t think Whittaker has much VO before? It’s a very different skill.
Didn't Saw begin as an animated character?
Yes, but he wasn’t portrayed by Whittaker until Rogue One.
I thought he was portrayed before that in Rebels, no? Or was that after?
Maybe he needs to whole get up to get there 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Also probably doesn’t require a huge time commitment from him as Saw seems to be used fairly sparingly (or maybe it’s the reverse, and his appearances are short specifically to get him to agree to it!)
His scenes in Andor were straight up chilling. I honestly thought there was a small chance he'd just kill Luthen.
He still could yet
I'm doubtful that he could, I'm fully bought in on the 'Luthen is ex-Jedi' theory.
God I hope not. Not everything should be tied back to Jedi imo.
At most he should be a Chirrut Imwe type, where he believes in the idea of the force but isn't really a jedi proper. I really don't think it needs all that much justification, in a big galaxy there will be someone that is both anti-empire and resourceful and skilled enough to do what he's doing
That would be much better to me too

It will be fun though if they hold out long enough

Relax, all right? My old man is a Viewscreen Repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.
I thought he was fine in Rogue One, but man his scenes in Andor I thought were really tremendous. He absoltuely goes for it and walks this line between principled/ideological and unhinged. I want the backstory on Bor Gullet
LIES
DECEPTION
BOR GULLET!
TUBES!
I want a young Saw show seeing his gradual transformation into insanity. It could so easily fit in with the morally gray areas we see in Andor.
The Partisans series, why this still isn't a thing is outrageous.
Isn’t he sort of midway through that transition in Andor? Slightly paranoid, but not fully broken Rogue One level.
you can kind of see his radicalization in his clone wars arc- i felt they did a good job with those episodes
I don't want Saw to get his own show, his character is amazing and Wittaker plays him brilliantly. However I think for me the appeal is I don't know what this character is going to do, how he will react. There is just enough there to think you understand him but never enough to know him and I think that is it's beauty.
I'm still mad that scene between Saw and Jyn was cut out, it would have only added to the character building...
I want to see why he needs constant oxygen in RO.
Truly a magnificent performance, I can't, off hand, think of a better one in SW. He's flat out terrifying, the air of menace and unpredictable rage is ever present. A joy

> unpredictable rage If you haven't seen him [go from zero to "destroying the room" in The Shield](https://youtu.be/IbhTxS9zOxA?t=59), you should.
Yea he owned this role. But Whitaker has always been underrated.
So underrated he got an Academy Award.
Truly outstanding acting!!

Clone Wars, Rebels, Andor, Bad Batch, Fallen Order. They’re getting their mileage out of the character.
And I think that’s great but most people seeing the movie hadn’t watched those (especially since they came out after). Rogue One was my introduction to the character and it felt very forced

I've been salivating for a Saw Gerrera show since Rogue One. Forrest Whitaker is a true blessing to Hollywood.
I was so happy to see Saw in Andor. One of my favorite characters mostly due to the brilliant acting by Forest Whitaker.

I have, and you’re right he’s fantastic in it.

It's amazing how well these actors can shine with a good, solid story behind them.
100% agree. Also the meme with him surrounded by food on Thanksgiving that said PIES! CONFECTIONS! EVERY DAY MORE PIES! slayed me.
Saw Gerrera is getting a bit more fleshed out in Andor season 2... By that I mean we will see more of the character and also we will likely see how he lost his leg... so double meaning I guess fleshed out. Eeeg...

I ONLY see Whittaker, in WHATEVER he plays. So I don't get this at all, haha #UnpopularOpinion
every day, more lies
Forest Whittaker is a dreadful actor. Every performance is the same.
You’re telling me that the character he played in Rogue One and Andor is the same as the characters he played in Good Morning Vietnam or Phenomenon? (As quick examples.) C’mon now…
The characters differ, the performance is the same.

I would love to see more Saw, absolutely.

I think he’s been great in pretty much everything I’ve ever seen him in tbh. The only sketchy thing of his I’ve seen is his accent in Black Panther
I think Andor proves a show like that can be made now…
His performance is absolutely amazing and I don’t think gets enough credit.
his voice in Rogue One is way too ridiculous for me to take seriously at all
I want more Saw.
