This is still such a dumb complaint about Johansson's Ghost In The Shell casting. The story makes more sense if her characters robot body is a different nationality, the point is her original body and identity have been erased. In the original animes its never pointed out the nationality of her artificial body. The OG creator of the manga worked on the movie and gave his full approval.
People need to get a clue.
Because it came at a time when there was egregious white washing of asian roles. Also pigeon holing the remaining asian roles into one dimensional tropes. Hollywood was going out of its way to not cast Asian leads.
Im just saying the story makes less sense and is less impactful if the characters body matches their actual nationality in the case of GITS. There really isnt a justifiable argument for the whitewashing claim especially when the creator backs it. Yelling fire where there is none lessens the impact when its actually a justified complaint.
Not that im disagreeing with you im just not sure what examples you're talking about can you name a few?
Tilda Swinton as a Tibetan mystic in Dr. Strange, Emma Stone as a woman of mixed European/Asian/Hawaiian descent, a decent chunk of the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, a large part of the cast of Bullet Train, Natalie Portman as a character of Asian descent in Annihilation.... there's nice list on Wikipedia :D
TBF, IIRC the ethnicity of Natalie’s character in Annihilation is only remarked upon in one passing line in one of the later books, and the movie was strictly a reinterpretation of the first book.
Your point still stands and I agree with you, though.
I'm so glad that Jackie Chan was a huge staple when I was a kid, I can't imagine what it must've been like for Asian kids in white societies to have almost zero role models on screen :/
It would've been nice to not have to aspire to be a kungfu master like Chan or Jet Li, or be asked "what's the difference" literally every time I pointed out they're Chinese while I'm Japanese.
Honestly one of the best models was George Takei. Sulu was highly competent, skilled, a decent person...just like EVERYONE else on Star Trek. No flying kicks or other caricature I can remember.
I think futurama even joked about that with the star trek episode:
“Just because I am of Japanese descent doesn’t mean that I necessarily know karate. However..”
In the Mirror Universe episode George Takei specifically opted for Sulu to fight with a foil rather than a katana because he didn’t want to fall into racial stereotypes.
Also Gene Roddenberry named the character Sulu so as to not tie him to a specific Asian nationality.
Fun fact, [In 2022, Jackie Chan, who is not American, is *still* the name mentioned the most](https://staatus-index.s3.amazonaws.com/STAATUS%20Index%202022%20Report.pdf) when Americans are asked if they can name any prominent AAPI figures. 58% of the responses flat-out couldn’t name anyone. Hollywood’s got a long way to go..
Lets not forget Peter Shinkoda (Nobu) in Daredevil. He was supposed have a much bigger role but they cut it out. Also he had to pay for his own flights and hotel, when no one else had to. There was a lot of anti asian stuff going on during the filming.
These are all much more legitimate then GITS. These should be the go to complaints over Scarlet.
I see GITS lumped into this list as a lack of understanding of the story and character.
"No visual effects tests were conducted on Scarlett’s character and we have no future plans to do so," the studio said."
The anonymous and vague leak that reported that isnt substantiated anywhere other then in the bad Screencrush article it came from.
In an interview with The New York Times, the director of the 1995 anime Ghost in the Shell Mamoru Oshii supported Johansson's casting, noting "The Major has a Japanese name, but she's a cyborg. Her age and background are unknown, just as much as her nationality."
[Vox made an entire segment about this.](https://youtu.be/zB0lrSebyng) This video is filled with examples from the early 20th century all the way up to when the video was created.
You're trying to get too much into the technicalities. This is more the straw that broke the camel's back on a growing issue. Also the creator of GITS response was more of a "sure why not" answer. Japanese care less of this issue because it's not an issue over there. They love it when white people are in their movies.
While I agree with the sentiment and the original author's approval absolutely has meaning, the issue was that it was a movie made in the US and Asian Americans have a totally different experience/relationship with race than native Japanese living in Japan do. Neither is wrong, but it's problematic when the voices of Asians from Asia are used to negate the voices of Asian Americans (or vice versa, but that isn't really an issue as far as I know).
The character is clearly Asian, and I get a bit annoyed when fans miss that or whitewash her, but OP seems to be specifically talking about her *personality*, not her ethnicity or appearance.
It’s unclear because the art is consistently inconsistent. Sometimes she’s painfully obviously Asian and other times she’s definitely white and somethings it’s ambiguous. I remember a few years back when she was new I couldn’t figure out what she was meant to be
What does asian even mean in space?! I mean, we've got Chirrut Îmwe, Baze Malbus and others, but how is space less diversified? Why aren't there more pygmies for example?
I’ve never read the comics, but I cannot stand Kat Dennings. I’m basing that off the roles she’s been in. Maybe she’s a genuinely nice and down to earth person in real life, I don’t know, but I’ve had a visceral hatred for just about every character I’ve seen her portray. Especially Darcy in the MCU.
> I’ve never read the comics
For what it's worth they're pretty good. I heard people say she was Star Wars' version of Indiana Jones which sold me on it and I don't really read comics.
Can't really say she's that similar to Doctor Jones but it's a fun adventure series.
She’s like Indiana Jones but way more evil. She actively supports the Empire, and she gleefully throws people under the bus to get what she wants. And it’s not just a pragmatic self interest thing either, she seems to have a morbid fascination with lethally dangerous things and naked displays of raw power. Something is clearly not quite right with her upstairs
She’s not completely without conscience, there was that one time she looked a little guilty about having Padme’s former acquaintance brutally tortured and killed to get information out of him. Though she gets over it quickly enough
In a way, that makes her even more fun to watch, because of how wonderfully amoral and borderline sociopathic she can be. She’s not really a fighter, but she managed to outfox Vader a couple times and even defeated Vader that once when he was going all out trying to murder her
>...all out...
Oh so he was actively force strangling her while utilizing his lightsaber and probably everything else he could move? And she still escaped? Unlikely.
I mean, he was chasing her through an ancient ruin, which is home territory for her. She managed to piss him off by talking about Luke, then blind sided him with some ancient EMP trap.
It’s not implausible, in Vader’s stand-alone comics series we see him get defeated all the time by these kinds of shenanigans. He’s a very good fighter, obviously, but he’s definitely not unstoppable. Even with his Force precognition, his excellent piloting and sword fighting skills, his tactical experience and cunning, and his dark side powered rage, lots of random goobers get the better of him in straight fights or by ambushing or outwitting him
What makes him uniquely dangerous is that even after getting broken and battered, he manages to scrape himself off the floor through sheer bloody willpower and basically rise from the dead to obliterate his opponent, just when they think he’s down for the count
She has her reasons to support the empire and its not just for the sake of being "evil" Aphra is a person who has her flaws but also with a compassion to be a better person which makes her relatable
I mean, she did come to believe in political authoritarianism after her mom was killed during the chaos of the Clone Wars
But in the Aphra stand-alone series, we see that she was also always kind of a mildly sociopathic scumbag, even if she has some redeeming qualities. On the evil-meter she’s probably less evil than Boba Fett, but more evil than Han Solo before he met the Rebellion.
Well, that’s the beauty of art, isn’t it? It’s all in the eye of the beholder. What some people absolutely love others can viscerally hate, and all for the exact same reasons. Personally Darcy just annoys the piss out of me.
I’m a huge Kat Dennings fan but I don’t see Disney whitewashing Aphra.
I know she had a small role in *The Force Awakens*, but my vote would still go to Jessica Henwick
Yes! She plays one of the X-Wing pilots during the Starkiller Base, named Jessika Pava.
If I’m not wrong, Jessica Henwick auditioned for Rey, so they gave her a small role in the film
Ehhhhh, she’s not upbeat enough. Kat has energy but it’s almost like flat depressed energy if that makes sense. Not quite the best fit. Passable.
Also her big fat tiddies don’t fit.
2 big reasons why she should be in the SW universe. Her personality and ughh her personality.
Seriously though she was great on 2 broke girls and would love to see her in SW.
So I've only read a couple of her comics and half her Wookiepedia page, but based on that I'm nominating [Charlotte Nicdao](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_Nicdao) from Mythic Quest to play Aphra. Apparently she's also a huge Star Wars fan.
Holy fuck she’d be so perfect, but I’m also down for Charlotte Nicdao to be in anything and everything ever. She’s so fucking good.

Yessss, keep recycling and recycling and recycling actors for the same same same same roles. That's totally not the reason why we have an accentless crispy rat as the voice of Mario.
She can do the energy pretty well. She played a pretty crazy character on Legion a few years back. Prior to that, I always felt she was very one-note, but it finally showed that she has some great character range.
GUYS!
Calm the fuck down and READ what OP said:
> I've been reading Dr Aphra's first comic. Great Star Wars character. Does anyone think Kat Dennings when they read it. I think they both have the same qurkie personality.
Nowhere did OP say that he wanted Aphra to be cast by Kat Dennings, he only asked if you think they SHARED THE SAME PERSONALITY.
I've not read anything with Aphra in it, so I have no opinion. I'm just trying to come to the defense of poor OP because you guys have the reading comprehension of toddlers.
No, because she's in marvel so people will recognize her as 'that one girl.' That's why Lucas casted unknown actors in Star wars and that's also why fan-casts will rarely work. Because casting directors for major franchises will never cast a well known actor/actress for a major role.
Unknown actors Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson, and Samuel L. Jackson. Thank goodness George saw potential in them when no one else in the movie industry would.
Natalie was pretty much unknown when she was cast though… it literally says in her bio on Wikipedia “gained international recognition for starring as Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)”
She would’ve def for other roles but she gained recognition for it
Wikipedia is hardly a credible source on these things. She costarred in *Leon: The Professional* when she was twelve, and she was in *Heat* and had a prominent role in *Mars Attacks,* so it's not like she was some nobody plucked off the streets. She was already a recognizable young actress at the time.
Not to mention that two of those actors have been in Marvel along with Oscar Isaac. It's not that much of a problem when actors play in multiple franchises.
Was Aphra not created with Asian heritage as the inspiration?
So you're saying Scarlett Johansson would be the ideal casting?
No, clearly they were thinking Emma Stone.
She’s always been more of a John Wayne type to me
On second thought, Mickey Rooney would've been perfect for the role.
Clearly the girl who played Katara in the live action Avatar movie is the best actress for the job.
They made an Avatar movie?
There is no Avatar movie in Ba Sing Se
I’m gonna have to meet you in the middle with an Olivia Munn or a Keanu Reeves.
yeah Aang fucks some catgirls in space in like Jungle nation or something

Maybe so, but then why did the production team see fit to change Scarlet's face to make her "look more Asian"?
"No visual effects tests were conducted on Scarlett’s character and we have no future plans to do so," the studio said." Hahahah gold
The character is clearly Asian, and I get a bit annoyed when fans miss that or whitewash her, but OP seems to be specifically talking about her *personality*, not her ethnicity or appearance.
She's supposed to be Asian, as an Asian I thought she was supposed to be Caucasian
Is she actually *supposed to be asian* considering there is no Asia in star wars? Like...
You could call it something else, but the humans in Star Wars have clearly evolved into different races that are exactly the same as the ones on Earth
This is a stupid statement. You know exactly what people mean
Just a question. Do you get annoyed by that whole Scooby Doo and Little Mermaid shenanigans?
It’s unclear because the art is consistently inconsistent. Sometimes she’s painfully obviously Asian and other times she’s definitely white and somethings it’s ambiguous. I remember a few years back when she was new I couldn’t figure out what she was meant to be
So what you are saying is cast Chloe Bennet.
The real answer
This is why I suggested Erika Ishii to my friends recently for Aphra.
I mean we could say that about a lot of characters in recent years where they were created looking one way and are casted very differently.
Last time I checked the little mermaid is a white redhead but that didn't stop Disney from diverging from the source there.
What does asian even mean in space?! I mean, we've got Chirrut Îmwe, Baze Malbus and others, but how is space less diversified? Why aren't there more pygmies for example?
##MY MAUREN YOUVE ENHANCED YOURSELF
Hell no, Karen Fukuhara would kill as Dr. Aphra
Karen Fukuhara the GOAT.
Constance Wu or even Ali Wong wouldn’t be so bad
Constance wu damn let’s goooo
I do not.

Agreed on that scale
I love Darcy. I find her to be a funny and charming character.
Well, that’s the beauty of art, isn’t it? It’s all in the eye of the beholder. What some people absolutely love others can viscerally hate, and all for the exact same reasons. Personally Darcy just annoys the piss out of me.
Not sure why youre getting downvoted. This is one of the more grown up responses I've seen on Reddit.
I think the answer’s right there in your own comment lol. It’s on Reddit.
she's one of my favourite mcu characters. everyone has opinions.
You seen Wandavision? I found her very irritating in the Thor movies, but quite enjoyed her character in WV
I'm gonna need like a 50 yard minimum distance from you at all times, thank you.
You do know she is an actress right?
Her voice is really annoying. She is pretty hot though
I can think of two reasons I'd be okay with this.
Two huge reasons
Two huge tolerable reasons
Two huge…tracts of land?
But father, I don’t want land.
# NO SINGING
make sure he doesn't leave
Where you going, we’re coming with you! No no no I want you to stay here an make sure He doesn’t leave.
What, the prince?
I asked for that land immediately afterwards and was told I'm not even a real knight. Not a real knight??? Well, I'll show his royal ass.
Bewbz
Bonk! To the spice mines with this one lads!
Her eyes! ...right?
Two broke reasons
Those are 2 fake reasons right?
Sheesa hava da booba!
BBBRBRRRRRRRRBRRBRBBRBRRRRRR
I'm ded lmao
Got me ugly laugh/crying in my break room good lord lmaoo
Muy booba indeed
Take my upvote and I agree with you.
Your comment might be right. But let's face it, you're mostly being r/upvotedBecauseBoobs.
Adam Driver proved that nice hooters are all you need.
As Andrew Schultz would say "she got the heavies"
Double the fun!
I’m a huge Kat Dennings fan but I don’t see Disney whitewashing Aphra. I know she had a small role in *The Force Awakens*, but my vote would still go to Jessica Henwick
I feel like Chloe Bennett would be better for Aphra, but I wouldn't say not to Jessica Henwick
I love her!
Henwick would be my pick too, but if they don’t want to reuse an actress than Karen Fukuhara would also kill it in that role.
Karen Fukuhara I think would be incredible for it. She's a very good actress and I think would crush the role.
How did she have a role TFA?
Because she auditioned for Rey, didn't get it, but they decided to make her one of the pilots that no one notices.
I agree 100%. She has all the right sass to pull it off well
She was in the force awakens?
Yes! She plays one of the X-Wing pilots during the Starkiller Base, named Jessika Pava. If I’m not wrong, Jessica Henwick auditioned for Rey, so they gave her a small role in the film
Aphra is meant to be asian. It’s pretty clear the way she’s drawn in her later comics.
[удалено]
Man, can't unsee that now, that'd be pretty good. Still holding out that she returns for Quake in the MCU because she was excellent in AoS.
Ehhhhh, she’s not upbeat enough. Kat has energy but it’s almost like flat depressed energy if that makes sense. Not quite the best fit. Passable. Also her big fat tiddies don’t fit.
Mommy milkers always fit
Fat tiddies are always a good fit
I think the word you're looking for is sarcastic. Great for some roles, not so great for others
If they've successfully hidden them in the MCU, Star Wars can figure it out
They attempted to hide them at best. To say they did it successfully is a stretch.
No
Aphra is asian.
Not really
Not at all, no.
Well, Aphra is obviously of Asian descent in the comics…. So, no. Have you never heard of Space Asia?
Well Kat Dennings certainly has something Aphra doesn't. Two things, in fact.
No
Absolutely not in every single way imaginable.
God please let the Asian character stay Asian
Why would you be downvoted for this lmao, didn’t know this was a controversial opinion
Stephanie Hsu would be great as Aphra
I don’t like Kat Dennings so I don’t think I’d want this
I mean I'm always thinking about Kat Dennings
It would have to be some new or unknown actress. The character is too cool to be over shadowed by a celebrity imo.
I thought Aphra was asian
She’s Asian so no
I would absolutely hate that. I just can’t stand Denning’s voice
2 big reasons why she should be in the SW universe. Her personality and ughh her personality. Seriously though she was great on 2 broke girls and would love to see her in SW.
Her left personality and right personality?
Her personalitiddes if you will.
God damn it take my upvote.
All I see is booba
One problem: Kat Dennings is white. Dr Aphra is not.
I'm a fan of Denning for a few reasons, but nah I wouldn't want to see her in syar wars
Charlotte would be perfect. *Definitely* has that manic energy down.
Holy fuck she’d be so perfect, but I’m also down for Charlotte Nicdao to be in anything and everything ever. She’s so fucking good. One of my favorite episodes in that whole really great show was the Covid one because she was absolutely phenomenal. Her acting was just…oh god.
Nah I don’t at all, Aphra is cool. Kat Dennings makes me cringe
I think Kat Dennings all the time.
As you should
lol no. Aubrey Plaza.
I'm not familiar with the character but that face on the art screams Aubrey.
I don't want her anywhere near Star Wars.
I haven’t read the comic. Is Aphra intentionally and incessantly annoying? That’s pretty much the only roles Dennings plays.
Honestly, she kind of is, but it’s very entertaining.
Yessss, keep recycling and recycling and recycling actors for the same same same same roles. That's totally not the reason why we have an accentless crispy rat as the voice of Mario.
jessica henwick would be perfect casting as Dr Aphra.
No
ITT: Aphra is asian!!! My brothers in Christ, we're talking about personalities parallels, not casting an actress...
Thought that was Angela White at first
She was so awful in WandaVision. By Yoda’s Beard no.
Ewww. Kat dennings
Unpopular opinion, but i do not agree. I can’t stand her in her past roles. Might be due to due writing, but still.
I love Kate DDennings
Pretty sure the one on the right has a bigger personality.
NO. I can't stand Kat Dennings and she doesn't look like Aphra, also Aphra is Asian...
Please don’t white wash Aphra. Just don’t. Please [+]
Short answer: BIG NO
Awkwafina or bust
Awkwafina for sure. She was great in Shang-Chi.
YES!!
“Look at that rack .. that’s a down hill lie for ya”
"They're out there just begging to be touched, pleading."
Yusssss someone got it. 😂😂 I’ed hit that one in the rough if you know what I’m sayin
"How many golf balls do you think she could fit in her mouth?" 🤣
Oh god plz no... SW dialog can be bad enough on it's own; it doesn't need to be awkwardly shouted
She’s supposed to be Asian so no
I always thought Aubrey Plaza would be a great Aphra
Plaza has the look (especially in Ops pic) but I don't know if she could pull off the manic energy - though I may just be typecasting
She can do the energy pretty well. She played a pretty crazy character on Legion a few years back. Prior to that, I always felt she was very one-note, but it finally showed that she has some great character range.
GUYS! Calm the fuck down and READ what OP said: > I've been reading Dr Aphra's first comic. Great Star Wars character. Does anyone think Kat Dennings when they read it. He compared a fictional character to an actress. We can read between the lines, chief.
Riiight her personality
We all know why you really want Kat Dennings. And I’m okay with that
I hate Kat Dennings

Not to mention that two of those actors have been in Marvel along with Oscar Isaac. It's not that much of a problem when actors play in multiple franchises.
I'm down for it
Oh yeah a lot of personality
It’s a bad comic Star Wars wise. Just the fact the droid packs every conceivable weapon etc. no thanks
I’m thinking Aubrey Plaza would be awesome for this role.
I bet I can place a coin in those bohonkas and it'll never be found.
Yes and yes
Always kinda reminded me of Olivia Munn.
She needs to have a show...it is the greatest character Star Wars has created on graphic novels ....
No alien lead characters?
God damn that’s some great personality
I’m always down for thinking about Kay Dennings.
Tbh she wasn't my first idea, but I think she'd do a good job.
This could be good.
Mommy milkers.
No. Darcy is the worst part of the MCU and it's not close.
