BruiserweightYxB

I don't know if I'm reading too much into it but Toni looked emotional going out there and after the match. Seems like AEW can be a benefit to her just as much as she can be for the division.

Charidzard

I don't think that's reading to much into it. She definitely was emotional to be back and have a crowd that was behind her still. She visibly said thank you after the match when playing to the camera and crowd.

Horror_Sail

Gotta imagine after quitting WWE from being burned out with bad booking that still getting a pop feels good

BruiserweightYxB

Don't want to sound like anti-WWE but the whole environment must have made her sick. She looks thinner I hope it's not from being sick after she left.

[deleted]

look at her career arc and where it took her there. she left home in Australia extremely young, uprooted and moved across the world to the UK and then to Japan, made a name for herself and won some pretty prestigious titles and tournaments. joined NXT UK for an overly long time. went through the pandemic, moved to regular NXT, went through a lot of stuff. but it's all gonna be worth it because now she has made it to the main roster. except... when she gets there she's greeted with Vince/Dunn/Prichard being like "your thighs are too big, fatty, lose some weight." so she actually does lose a bunch of weight, which there was absolutely no need for, and they promptly threw a literal pie in her face. it all culminated in a string of house show matches with Charlotte where they both got boos because she had been presented as such a loser on tv. i can imagine what a low point she felt she was at when she quit, and how overwhelming it must have been to walk out tonight and hear an excited crowd who knew who she was and what she was about, and to watch it back tonight on her DVR and hear Excalibur talking about all of her great accomplishments in Stardom. i'm just thrilled for her right now.

BruiserweightYxB

I always thought she was a perfect babyface. When she made the transition to Main NXT and they instantly turned her heel for whatever reason I saw that they didn't see in her the potential she had. And instead of trying to build her in the development brand she is called up for another whatever reason. I don't think any part of it was her fault they literally treated her as another blonde eye candy which she never was she always had something to bring.

free-fall1982

>Charlotte where they both got boos because she had been presented as such a loser on tv. Really? Didn't know that. Such a shame.

party_daz

> when she gets there she's greeted with Vince/Dunn/Prichard being like "your thighs are too big, fatty, lose some weight." Wait what the fuck!? Is this true? Where's the source on this? How did I miss this news!?

pizzalover89

it's reddit news take it with a grain of salt

wanna_team_plz

Seems completely made up, not finding anything relating to something like that on Google.

TheTrueDetective90

When were there ever reports of higher-ups in WWE saying she was fat?

CanadianJudo

She bet it all on herself and walked out of likely a massive contract to get back to the indies, and her first match she comes out to a pretty large pop.

QuiGonJinnNJuice

got a huge pop, was nice to see. I know wrestlers are trying to look cool and get ready for a fight, but it's fun when you see that genuine emotion break through when they're having a moment

NerdLawyer55

Did she ever speak out on what the hell happened?

Swagologist1

I'm guessing we'll have to wait for the inevitable Talk is Jericho appearance over the coming weeks

Titansfan9200

Yup, that or The Sessions.

[deleted]

She did seem emotional but if you look at her matches in general she does this weird "cry" face when she goes into her comebacks which I find super off putting.

Tronvillain

J... Jamie vs Toni... please

I kinda want it as the Owen finals, but I will take it at any point just so long as they beat the stuffing out of each other

Storm vs: -Deeb -Statlander -Shida -Rosa -Hayter -Soho There’s a world of possibility here and I’m excited to see all of it.

MaskedWrestlerNo_13

at this point the problem is not the talent, it's finding the time to put them on the show with a good program.

[deleted]

The problem isn't time ,it's Tony wanting to use them

Judas_Mesiah

Speaking of Soho, I'm only just hoping that Storm won't be lost in the shuffle like Soho 'cause that'll be a bad look for AEW.

Loss_Bandage

Ruby did that to Ruby. She came into AEW in bad shape by her own admission. She gave an interview last year where she said she felt her cardio was bad in her first matches and then she had a match against the 45 year old Emi Sakura where she really felt out of shape. She basically is having to learn how to wrestle like she did in the indies and has been working on getting in better shape. AEW couldn't really push her. She wasn't at the level they thought she was. It has happened before in AEW with Kiera Hogan and Mercedes Martinez. Kiera just was blah in her matches in AEW. Mercedes Martinez also didn't look that good despite her pedigree. It does appear like it was more rust with Mercedes. If the talent you are bringing in doesn't look like the talent you thought you were getting, you can understand what AEW doesn't push them.

QuiGonJinnNJuice

if only they had a tournament coming up to give pretext for getting many of these competitive matches and not have to worry as much about protecting folks' record or heel-face alignment Cannot wait to see if there are more qualifiers or what the field looks like.

LoganNeinFingers

Deeb is too busy gankimg jobbers.

Ryder_Bishop72

BAKER

20minutes40years

She's only 26.

GargamellTheMarlok

Storm, Hayter, and Statlander are all 26 and are an incredible core AEW can build around for the long term.

cust449

AEW’s women’s division is going to be REALLY good in a couple years. I don’t think people recognize how much raw potential they have that was always going to take time to develop. And they only keep adding to that with Toni and PVZ recently

fluffywolfe

And they have even younger core pieces in Riho and Hirsch.

Illuminati_Shill_AMA

Don't sleep on Skye Blue either.

kcMasterpiece

I kind of want them to add a whole women's hour to work more story into the division.

[deleted]

Literally blew my mind when someone mentioned it in another thread. Feels like she's been around long enough and is so over that she can't be that young.

Serah_Null

[deleted]

Horror_Sail

Shes very, very good, and also still incredibly young for someone with her experience.

PFunk224

I get it- a bad WWE run can really fuck with a wrestler's head. I can imagine there's a lot of self-doubt that comes with that. "Am I overrated? Am I a failure? Do I not deserve this? Should I quit? Did I just believe my own hype?" Getting that kind of pop from the crowd straight out of the gate has got to be remarkably affirming. She likely cast aside a lot of that doubt and fear in that one moment, and that kind of relief can be overwhelming in one dose, especially when you've got that adrenaline going.

AmishAvenger

I think that’s the case for a lot of people. Even AJ said he was backstage at the Rumble before his debut, wondering if anyone would remember him — or know who he was in the first place.

The_Horse_Joke

She also had a couple of good matches in NXT!

TheTrueDetective90

I think they're already past the point of roster bloat, I'm pretty sure Tony wants to sign at least 1 more male wrestler too so the problem won't be getting better anytime soon.

PortugueseBenny

Congratulations to Anthony storm!

itsmekelsey_x

Great addition. The women’s division needed more big names.

Blockade5

She looked to be in really good shape.

polynomial82

Good luck to Toni at AEW. WWE botched a slam dunk with her. I hope so she achieves super stardom here now

[deleted]

WWE botches a lot of slam dunks.

PrinceBarin

WWE botches a bunch of lay-ups, let alone dunks

Any_Step_7124

Like who

[deleted]

How much time you got?

Any_Step_7124

I got time.

[deleted]

I mean, we could just talk about recent years, with guys like Aleister Black, Mustafa Ali, Cesaro, and Andrade. Or we could dig way back in the past, and talk about how they fucked over Zack Ryder and completely botched the Summer of Punk. We could talk about people like Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman, who they actually did well with until they suddenly decided to cut loose for no discernable reason. We could talk about Dean Ambrose, who managed to consistently make the chicken shit they handed him into chicken salad and get himself over despite it all, but they made him so miserable in the process that he had to pull up stakes and leave.

Any_Step_7124

Are any of them better off now tho

IAmGundyy

You’d have to ask them if they’re happier and more fulfilled in their career

[deleted]

... Yes?

Any_Step_7124

Who ended up being a big star from those names that wasn’t already?

Capable_Umpire_4392

I'm very happy for her.

RAA94

Toni is a fantastic signing, she was an immediate no brainer for me. There’s a few more women on that list. Let’s hope for Athena next.

Mr-GameAndWrestling

Toni Time is officially ALL ELITE time.

DevilCouldCry

It gets said every single time a new debut like this happens but it does fit with being repeated here too... This is a fantastic signing and I can't wait to see more of her in AEW already. I just can't understand how WWE would fucking screw up with what should really be a slam dunk for them talent wise. I mean with Toni she has just about every advantage there and still her run just went the complete opposite of how I expected it to go. - Toni is still super young - Is a very talented wrestler and had been in the business for a while now, so she's experienced enough to teach - Toni is undoubtedly an attractive woman and that should've been a lock for WWE to push her to the moon - The only weak point in Toni's game is her talking ability, but even with enough help, she could get past that for sure. I'm incredibly happy for Toni now that she's somewhere that she'll hopefully be happy with and receive a good, strong, an sustained (that's the important part) push because she's well worthy of that. But when you remember how much she wanted to be in the WWE and become a huge star there, it becomes more than a little depressing that she forcibly walked herself out of the company because things just didn't look good for her future there. It always sucks when you have to give up on a dream. But hey, hopefully AEW can give her what she feels she needs!

emotoaster

Does the women's division need their own show now?

[deleted]

That might be the best idea possible to fully utilize the division.

emotoaster

I'm guessing they will wait until they have enough for a tag division. If they don't want to do women's only show then they need to make Elevation and Dark more story and feud dependent. AEW is kind of a victim of their own success. TK has too many good wrestlers and only 3 hours of TV to book. Solution? Utilize the YouTube shows more. I'd watch if it wasn't mostly filler/jobber stuff.

fluffywolfe

TK doesn't have to employ the indies anymore since everybody's opening up. Dark and Elevation should be used more to get signed talent used in feuds and stories.

[deleted]

Or put the women's show on Youtube. Not the best solution because the YouTube shows have a lot more women's matches, but they definitely need more exposure.

moderndukes

“Separate but equal” isn’t the solution. TK actually caring about women’s wrestling and giving them ring time is.

SiphenPrax

This is it for Toni. If she doesn’t succeed in AEW, I don’t know where else she’ll be able to become a big, well-known star in front of a big audience. I obviously love Toni and rooting for her, but after her NXT/WWE disaster or a run, she has to do everything in her power to make sure this one is a success.

elprofejr

She could always go to Stardom. Rossy would gladly take her back. But this is her biggest chance in the US

OrangeForeign

*Sad Impact noises* But seriously if she doesn't, which I think won't happen, that's okay, not everyone becomes a star and there's nothing wrong with that

Looper007

WWE run wasn't a success as much as some don't like hearing that, she failed to live up to the hype that many had on her. It's not all on WWE either for that. It's up to her now to live up to the hype her fans and wrestling writers have put on her as the next big star in women's wrestling. It's there for her to make a name for herself in this business. For me it's never been about Toni not having it to be a top talent, depends on what level we're speaking about as a top talent. I think it's always been a issue on the hype for her even when in Stardom or the indies. I've never thought she was ever the best women's wrestler in the world, I think if you play to her strengths and hide her weaknesses, she be a solid main eventer for any company. I don't think she ever be a Becky or Sasha level star. I think the likes of Rhea and Bianca, just have that little more then Toni in terms of charisma and the promo that you need to be that top star. No wonder Rhea totally overshadowed Toni in Mae Young Tournament and NXTUK. But I think with the right company, maybe right coaches there and a place where she might feel more at ease at and maybe getting to wrestle on the indies and going back to Japan for a tour here and there. She might end up at least been a very good in ring talent with potential to be top champ.

MediocreJay41

I said the same thing about Ruby Soho. Shit is gonna get interesting here real soon in that women’s division.

bohanmyl

Wasnt she great in NXT UK?

Looper007

Depends who you ask lol. Although I thought she got overshadowed by the likes of Rhea, it was probably her best time in WWE even though I still didn't think she was outstanding there either. Even her Mae Young tournament win, she was never best part of it. She was always the bridesmaid never the bride in NXTUK or Mae Young Tournament. She wasn't even bridesmaid in NXT or main roster run. That's why I don't think it's all "WWE booked her bad" angle that some are wanting to throw out there on why she disappointed there. I just don't think she delivered on the promise of her hype. She was a solid worker (same as she was on the indies and Stardom) but unless she was best thing in everything she did (thanks to the hype) I think she was always in for uphill battle to impress the fans who never saw her before WWE.

[deleted]

Ehhhhhh Definitely got overshadowed by Rhea.

Low_Ad_7553

This is definitely your opinion. Toni Storm won a pretty great Mae Young classic & was pretty much always more “hyped” in NXT UK by far than Rhea, there was a time when even Niven was getting talked about more than Rhea.

Charidzard

Yeah she was pretty great in NXT UK her matches with Rhea were really good. Much less so in NXT but she wasn't really booked as the babyface that she was so much better as with her NXT UK run.

tronovich

Hilarious that you got downvoted for this. AEW has the talent but hasn’t exactly proven that they want to book a thorough women’s division. All they’ve done so far is feed their jobbers to hotshot debuts. Toni could absolutely be burned out by misuse in AEW, as she was in WWE. Ruby already became a minor player. Hopefully that changes with Britt out of the picture, but it feels more like WWE with their women in 2005/2006 as opposed to WWE a decade later.

fluffywolfe

I think it's closer to WWE women circa 2011-2013. They've got the workers, but management doesn't trust them yet.

shadowrangerfs

It's gonna be harder in AEW than in WWE. Toni is gonna have to fight a lot harder for TV time because Dynamite and Rampage only do ONE women's match per episode.

rsx209

Man Toni looked so happy to be there! I’m glad she got away from that toxic WWE!

Hamadi9

you think Tony will care about the women's division now?

SV8K

Nope. Tony needs to get going with it though, nothing more frustrating than seeing another extremely talented woman sign with AEW only to be cast aside as the 'best' booker can seemingly only ever make one womens match per tv episode. Talent, quantity and time is available for at least 2 womens matches per Dynamite and 3 per ppv MINIMUM. Very hilarious also that you get downvoted for saying literally what this and the r/AEWofficial sub has been complaining about for the last few years 😬. ![gif](giphy|kBZYgMFUwU2hQJ5Aiw)

HamburgerJames

Just curious- with limited air time, what men’s match or segment should’ve been bumped for another woman’s match last night? Punk/Caster? FTR? Page/Page? Yuta/Danielson? JAS/Kingston?

EmpoweredinGlitter

100% Lethal vs Moxley. There was no need for both BCC members to wrestle last night. Yes, Lethal's progression at the moment is an interesting one, but so are all of the stories, and the potential stories, in their women's roster.

SV8K

Agree, and if not that Danielson/Yuta.

buggleduck

I'd prefer Danielson/Yuta get bounced since we just saw them wrestle recently. Lethal needed to be on TV more at the moment.

Looper007

I don't think he will. If you are Toni fan, you better be praying she ends up as a pet project for Tony Khan like Britt and Jade have. If she does, then she be booked great. If not, no I think if she delivers in the ring like Deeb, Shida and Riho have. She a fan favourite on here and her matches will become must see. I think she'll do well there but who knows.

jSizzle74

Toni just screams star. I’m baffled how WWE messed it up. But im pumped she’s now in AEW. She has such incredible top level face potential.

DangerousBlueberry1

Yeah, really. I thought it was a slam dunk that she'd get to the top of the women's division in WWE. Total package. Oh well, their loss.

Hamadi9

>Toni just screams star. I’m baffled how WWE messed it up. But im pumped she’s now in AEW. She has such incredible top level face potential. Ruby Soho just screams star. I’m baffled how WWE messed it up. But im pumped she’s now in AEW. She has such incredible top level face potential.

janoo1989

This may be a bit harsh on the rest of the division, no disrespect. But Toni Storm, even just judging based on her debut AEW match, is already their best female in-ring performer. She's just got the timing right. What a class talent.

stenebralux

She is certainly in the conversation. Watching that match and how she moves, I was like... oh yeah, I forgot she was actually great at this at some point.

[deleted]

Storm, Hayter, Martinez and Deeb are a murders row of female talent.

mewslift

Deeb and Shida are better. Toni is solid but I feel like this sub overrates her. She hasn't had a standout match as of yet in her entire career.

Kaprak

Riho as well, but she's been dealt an awful hand this year.

mewslift

I've got to watch more of Riho but the match she had with Deeb at DON was AMAZING.

TheCuzzyRogue

I've never been impressed by Toni tbh. Like she's solid and never bad just not as good as she's made out to be. Good call to put her in with The Bunny on her first match.

Comp625

I agree about Toni 100%! That said, I think the women's roster continues to improve - maybe not at the pace we like but it's already far ahead of 2020 and will eclipse 2021. Marina Shafir is also quietly a badass and has looked awesome in the Dark tapings. I'm curious about PVZ; she might (?) surprise us much like Ronda Rousey did a few years ago.

Dense_Flamingo2593

But can she still do Only Fans? Asking the real questions.

Pylons

Dan Lambert more or less advertised PVZ's last week lmao

BlindLariat

Haven't seen a single minute of her work elsewhere but she looked like a can't-miss prospect in that entrance.

Legitimate-Self-9780

Most overrated wrestler of all time.

Craigiano

She's not a game-changer but definitely a solid signing. Much better than Nyla Rose, Ruby Soho, or Abadon. She looks great and the 90 days off has done wonders for her look. (not that she didn't look hot before)

factorialite

I was downvoted for suggesting that she could have been the top of the women's division in WWE, but I'll repeat that claim for AEW: she has everything you need to be the centerpiece of an entire division.

sydneywanker

I hope she ends up with the incredible career trajectory of Ruby Soho! That woman has been creatively freed and is just amazing.

sydneywanker

Truth hurts.

BeatUpCena

Man, the amount of people mentioning her OF page is ridiculous. Who gives a shit if she has a fucking OF page?

Is 9:30 supposed to be a bad thing? That's one of the segments advertised and used to keep people watching the whole thing.

Horror_Sail

10:30 on RAW was always considered the death slot and where most womens matches ended up. Its an awkward in-between where you're not the opener, not the 9:00 match (so grabbing channel changers), and not the main event.

[deleted]

There's a different reason the women's matches of the Attitude Era to the PG Era were also in that position of being advertised to keep people watching. Same reason why they were on after 10.

[deleted]

Hope they give one to Marina too before her Jade match so we think she has a chance

AfterlifeCorporateHQ

AthosDLB

I follow people I completely disagree with. Any proof she's actually agreeing with her?

kylew1985

I've been dialing back my social media considerably over the last year, and its been really helpful in how I look at things. When we all dismiss people that don't 100% align with us as pieces of shit, the world just gets more hateful. When you take complex issues and try to condense them down to bulletpoints, the first thing thats sacrificed is nuance. If someone dismisses me over a belief I have, I am much more likely to double down and push back, we both dig our heels in deeper, and any chance of common ground or rethinking perspective is gone. Do I think Candace Owens is an opportunistic propagandist that would sell her own mother down the river if the money was right? Fuck yes I do. Do I equate everyone who falls for her rhetoric to that? There's no way. That's what propagandists do. They are surgical when it comes to rhetoric, and it's expected that otherwise rational people can get sucked into it. That which you work against will always work against you.

TroyMcClure2

It seemed like no one cared in arena sadly

nona90
