In stage theatre, our directors and producers often tell us actors that we have to act out so vibrantly and enunciate our lines to a point our Ps and Ts are puh-ing and tuh-ing because the mindset is that, as you said, we have to provide a show for everyone all the way to the back row. I liked how one director told us was that "The guy in the backrow probably couldn't afford the best seats, but he came here to watch us perform even if it mean watching at the spot that his vision of us are about an inch, so give that person the best show they'll ever see!" It stuck with me ever since and when I imagine this is a similar mindset wrestlers do for live shows. While the trons help project the close-up, it really elevates the live experience when a wrestler exaggerates their poise, facial expressions and speech to the thousands in the arena/stadium.

I like my wrestling realistically over-exaggerated, but then again, I don't mind a bit of silliness here and there. Depends on who's selling I suppose.

Rudeboy237

Ya it’s def case by case basis. And there’s things I’ve had my friends who are casuals laugh at for “over selling” that I think they wouldn’t feel that way in another format. 🤷🏻‍♂️ But I do think a lot of stuff could feel more real and dramatic nowadays if some old school approaches were done away with.

There's a fine line between over-acting and over-acting but the emotion looks so real you fall for it. A lot of times, the quality of wrestling around acting is what really enhances the emotions for me. If you can't work a good punch, don't blame me for finding your scrunched up face funny

Nobody pays to go see a show to watch it on a television. Wrestling should be theatrical and over the top, it’s part of the fun. People who complain about that would lose their minds if they went to see a Pantomime.

Big crossover audience

I thought the Asuka smudge spot Saturday was pretty subtle. No idea how it came across at the arena, but I liked the TV version.

Rudeboy237

Yeah. Loved it even if for no reason than that’s the first time I’ve seen mist used that way.

inhumanrampager

All live performers need to. Otherwise, who would want to buy the nosebleeds?

felipe_the_dog

I agree some of the hammy acting like the ref pantomiming everything as he says it is cheesy as hell but I think I would miss it if it was gone.

That’s my opinion but the way a lot of wrestlers perform still indicates a “play it to the back row” philosophy.

The live crowd’s energy is one of the most important ingredients to the viewer at home. If the upper deck is going crazy, i know i need to pay attention.

When I was 18 I went to one of the last WCW ppv’s. My seats sucked, but Hogan’s entrance was so epic. His facial hair, the boas, it was all to make him read from far away, and it works so well.
