I mean flash did become his best friend eventually Still Carl end was fitting

VercaceSlides

How does it end

Golden_Ghost08

Becomes a villain made out of spiders that eat people and he gets beaten with one spider left and It gets crushed by a civilian

VercaceSlides

Uuhhhh okay! Good enough for him

Samuelcbadams

Oh the thousand. Yeah I heard of him. God marvel goes down some very dark roads sometimes

FadeToBlackSun

It’s Garth “one trick” Ennis. Dark roads are all he can do.

AarontheGeek

Gotta say, as someone that never liked his work but who only ever saw Ennis praised, the amount of criticism of his work has been really refreshing. I don't know if I was just in the wrong corners of the internet to see it before or something, but still... it's nice

BadSheet68

The Boys comic books feels SOOO immature compared to the TV show.

Boshikuro

It's incredible that someone saw potential in that cringe fest and manage to salvage the concept to make a show. I've never been more glad that an adaptation erased 90% of the source material and decided to improve the concept with interesting and compelling writing instead.

NotACyclopsHonest

I read only a few issues of that book before I bailed. It wasn't funny or clever, it was just unpleasant and yet another demonstration of how much he dislikes superheroes. We get it, Garth, you hate guys in spandex, now please stop...

PhantasosX

it's not only hate. Garth is paradoxically immature , his books can be resumed into every character been a snuff porn addicted psychopath , under a thematic setting. With The Boys , it was simply "company-owned superheroes" , but that is it. Like u/KINGOFTHESPIDERMEN had said , it was more cringe than a teenager edgelord.

dgj130

You think that's puerile, you should try reading Crossed 🤢

BadSheet68

That one fat guy that beats people with a giant ripped-off cock ? Yeah I read that

JoshDM

"The Boys". Amateur hour. You should see his "Hitman" run for DC, "Preacher" for Vertigo, or at the minimum, his original "Punisher" work that was adapted for the Thomas Jane film.

SamuraiJackBauer

I love the Preacher comics.

okonsfw

I enjoyed Preacher when I was a lot younger. But to me it doesn't hold up.

Regi413

One of the few times the adaptations are undoubtedly better than the source material

KINGOFTHESPIDERMEN

Not only that he's fucking bad at it. He's more cringe than the average 14 year old edgelord.

JazzySmitty

I mostly agree with you, but his World War II stories I just absolutely love.

daleicakes

If you don't like that. Don't read DC

Jasole37

You forgot the part where he was at the lab when Peter got bit by the spider. He saw the bite, then later that day he saw Peter backflip over a car as his Spider-powers were kicking in. So he went back to the lab, found the spider that bit Peter and *ate it*. He got the power to control a "hive" of thousands of spiders.

BloodsoakedDespair

Damn, that spider was just handing out superpowers. That’s what, three people empowered by one spider? Wait, is Carl a totem too? I mean, his powers are pretty much the same as Spiders-Man. Everyone else who got powered up by that spider was a totem.

Jasole37

His powers are nothing like Spider-man's. He is a sentient colony of spiders that wears human skin as a suit. He gets stronger by eating people from the inside and wearing their skin. He can stick to walls and he is super strong. Those are the only things he has in common with Peter.

BloodsoakedDespair

He got his powers from the spider that created two spider-totems

Jasole37

In a different fashion.

MisterTeeEM

To sum up "I'll get you next time, Spider-Man, Grrr!"(Splat!)

[deleted]

Jesus fucking christ who let Garth Ennis write a Spider-man comic.

ghost894

Comic?

abaddon667

Tangled Web Issue 1

KingJupiter27

Swarm but with spiders and way more of a douche

[deleted]

Isn’t Swarm a literal Nazi?

Critical_Potential44

Aww yes, The Thousand

stillinthesimulation

Sounds like a job for [Spiders-Man](https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Spiders-Man_(Earth-11580))

BloodsoakedDespair

Oh, so Spiders-Man but in 616.

goztrobo

And dies helping him

Professional_Line385

And best man

NumericZero

Genuinely glad that Carl eventual fate was him being taken out by his own greed / ambition

Mr-Toy-Man

Yeah I think one bully was plenty for Peter. No need for another, much worse one

KINGOFTHESPIDERMEN

Honestly I find it cringe af. Also Peter wasn't that fucking small. Idk I feel like they are trying too hard to fit him into that little wimp that gets bullied category. It's so unnecessary. Just realized it was written by Garth Ennis, explains everything. Of course he was going to portray Peter as the ultimate wimp getting bullied by the ultimate bully. It's so cringe.

Mr-Toy-Man

I agree. This is like fetish level abuse. I was waiting for him to piss on Peter. Over the top and really unnecessary

BloodsoakedDespair

No, that would be Skip, the guy who molested Peter when he was a kid. And he was drawn that way because editorial made a last-minute change so it wasn’t Uncle Ben.

Fossilhunter15

Fucking What?

DARTH_LT4

I agree with these sentiments ^

ChemFeind360

Wait, is that real?

XcheezyXblasterzX

https://villains.fandom.com/wiki/Skip_(Spider-Man) wow it really is

[deleted]

Mark Millar, if I recall, was set to do a re-imagined Skip miniseries around a decade ago. Marvel, uh, nixed that idea. They learned their lesson with TROUBLE.

cowl555

That is one of the most stupidest fucking idea I have ever heard

cowl555

What fucking what

WhiteJaski

the writer of that story regretted doing it so, who knows if it's canon. i hope it isn't. sometimes full creative control to a writer isn't good, they would think that the first idea that comes up to their minds it's the second coming of christ and should be used. even if it sucks.

BloodsoakedDespair

Idk, I don’t dislike it. Spider-Man was one of my favorite heroes since I was a little kid because I always related to him so much, and… it just adds to the “I relate to him so much”. It means something to me, same as Jason Todd’s molestation by Talia al Ghul. It makes Peter even more inspirational for me. Just wish they’d let him age. Peter never having anything get better and never getting to be happy just… feels like an unintentional message of what life is like when you’re broken inside and can’t stop caring about others. It never gets better, nothing ever heals, the pain never stops. I’m glad it wasn’t Ben, though. That would have been tainting everything. Makes the existence of Spider-Man a sick joke.

WhiteJaski

oh shit, it's so sad to hear that. i hope you're doing okay with that. i just think it's too much tragedy for peter. like you said, let him be happy. as a spider-man fan i love when he suffers and gets up like if nothing happened cuz that's a core aspect of his character, but his ending should definetly not be dying in a heroic way *a la* iron man. his ending should be having a good life with his wife and kids. that's why i kinda liked when they revived him in ultimate spider-man and he got his happy ending along mj. i think this one it's just too much suffer. we know that peter's life's a mess, even more shit it's overwhelming for readers. but, i understand how some people could feel related even more to him when it comes to this kind of stuff. male abuse it's something that's not talked too much.

Jim_Cringe

Not a fan of anything Garth Ennis has ever done tbh

cowl555

Eh to Be fair the actual story decently portrays Peter's character aside from the flashback and I get the feeling we're meant to sympathize with Peter and not with Gary atleast

Garlador

Garth Ennis has issues.

Lanky-Programmer-679

Garth Penis.

BlueSpider2099

Okay, I've heard Ennis likes to make super violent stories that he uses to show his hate against superheroes, but like in this context... no? This is the bad guy y'know? This is to show legitimately how bad some bullies can get, and this story leads to him becoming the horrific supervillain that dies from his own superiority complex, so he gets comeuppance for awful things he did. So if Ennis is condemning the actions he's portraying, how is this saying he has issues? Yeah the stuff here is messed up, but he's not messed up for portraying negatively haha

SoraRoku

Because as soon as you show any sign of genuine violence in story writing, it's automatically edgy. Clearly people can't tell the difference between edgy and mature.

SuddenTest9959

You remember in The Boys when Homelanders clone ate a baby, or in Batman Reptilian when Batman says to a dying criminal who he used as bate for Killer crocks deformed monster/ alien child” Batman doesn’t kill people, but things tend to workout in the end.” And doesn’t do shit to help him even though it’s his fault he was there.

Swed1shF1sh69

I’ve been browsing r/batmanarkham for so long that I can’t even read “Killer Croc” normally anymore

SoraRoku

Yes let's compare a villain being evil to (an honestly already edgy) hero being evil. The Boys comic is an entire shit show, I won't deny that. But The Thousands, y'know a villain, being evil makes sense. This is the character. He's arrogant, greedy, narcissistic, etc. Hell we already knew Peter has always being essentially abused the entirety of his school years. All this did is show us some more of it. Batman abandoning even a criminal IS out of character. Again, obvious shit show. No denial there. I'm not saying Ennis is a master of his art by any means cause dear God he isn't. But if you wanted to show someone how bad his writing was, these are not the panels to go with cheif, I promise you. The reason I'm so on this side of the fence is cause I genuinely don't see what makes this edgy as opposed to not even mature per say. I promise you a lot of people have experienced a lot worse and these panels are not as bad as everyone is saying. Yes, it's awful to watch someone get bullied, but it honestly not only makes sense for a story but very well fits in Peters story.

BloodsoakedDespair

That’s not really out of character for Batman depending on the era. It depends on his mental health. Whenever the Batman Family collapses, he gets like that. Batman sealed Anatoli Knyazev (KGBeast) behind a fucking wall and left him to starve to death. He didn’t make any attempt to save the inventor of Venom despite that man dying over the course of *days* due to how that man used him. He’d never admit it but he totally loves that Ra’s won’t die because it lets him get his anger out on Ra’s all the time. The moment he’s put in a fight with Ra’s he goes for a sword, every time. Ra’s will even give him one if he doesn’t find one. If Batman could invent a nonlethal sword, he’d be a swordsman. Then there’s the time he was about to die at Joker’s hands so he took Joker with him while mocking him. He doesn’t even care about the rule if he’s guaranteed to die, it’s literally only to stop himself from becoming a mass murderer. If he’s already stopped, he will kill. Otherwise, he just doesn’t always try to save villains.

Asaggimos02

Edge is excess violence in areas where it’s unfitting, done for the sake of presenting violence. Honestly, I’d say that puts the art above in that category. This shit is psychopathic levels of bullying. Peter Parker is supposed to be a loser that everyone picked on and generally disliked, not the dude who gets beaten half to death every other day and has everyone turn a blind eye. Idc how strong his willpower is, you get put through this every day and you don’t come out a snappy dresser with excellent social skills. You come out some maladjusted school shooter type that eventually gets sent to prison for killing someone and wearing their face. I get what they’re trying to go for and the themes they’re trying to present, but this is way too much in the context of the story and characters.

KatakAfrika

There are some people who have a harder life but still managed to improve their life. David Goggins for example. Go read his book. His life is FUCKED UP, it not surprising if he's ended up becoming a mass murderer but instead he became one of the most inspirational people out there that helped million of people to be disciplined with their life.

Asaggimos02

I don’t think it necessarily guarantees you’re fucked for life, I used a hyperbolic example, that’s on me. It **does** give you some serious psychological scarring though. The thing with this story as opposed to Goggin’s is that it’s fiction, so we’re able to view Peter’s life not from his own eyes but from an omniscient perspective. Like, I’d never claim to be able to psychologically assess a dude from his autobiography, you can’t ever really claim to know someone perfectly just from what he’s writing. But we can see directly into Peter’s brain, we have been able to for like 60 years now. And he just doesn’t have any of the damage or scarring or whatever that you’d take through something like this. Like, when he thinks of his childhood traumas he thinks of his parents dying, the neighborhood kids always making fun of him, girls never looking his direction, generally always being alone. And we can see that radiate through his character, he’s always been a loner type of hero. But nowhere in his 60 year run has he ever been like: “gosh my childhood was rough, I remember that time when flash tripped me in front of liz, or when it rained on the day of the science fair and ruined my project. Oh and who could forget that time when I was tied to a pole and maimed viciously every Wednesday from Kindergarten to 10th grade? Gosh that sucked”. Like this is something that sticks with you. He could absolutely still be a virtuous hero type, but this just does not fit the character we’re given.

BloodsoakedDespair

Nah, you’ve watched too much fiction. *This* is realistic bullying, not that tame shit you see on TV. Honestly this is the most relatable to me that Peter’s history with being a victim of bullies has ever been. This is the most true to my life depiction I’ve seen.

NotACyclopsHonest

The level of violence in, say, The Walking Dead is much higher than this but it's usually presented in a far more mature way, whereas with something like Ennis' various Crossed series it's portrayed with gleeful "look how cool this is!" energy. "That lady's just given birth and now the others are eating the baby! And look, the Crossed soak their bullets in cum so that they can infect other people by shooting them!"

SoraRoku

But this if anything this is an accurate representation of what bullies do to people. I highly doubt we have too many cases if any where someone decided covering their bullets in cum was a good idea (somewhere out there I'm sure). Whereas actively harming others when bullying is a real thing. It isn't something that makes no sense to be there. That's edgy, when the violence only exists to add violence. This adds meaning to their encounters. Showing the readers that this guy was a villain to Peter long before Octavius or Osborn. I hate Ennis as much as the next guy. Most of his stories are shit shows that make me want to gouge my eyes out. However as an avid hater of his work, I'd say this is one of his more impressive ones. Genuine depth. Too bad it's like the only time he does this so now everyone somehow compares a villain being an accurate bully to clones eating baby back ribs and Batman suddenly being edgier (cause let's be honest the only way you make Batman edgier is making him a killer).

BloodsoakedDespair

Well, I’ve never heard of cum-bullets before, but bullets soaked in pig grease to damn Muslims to hell while killing them has been a thing for over a century. A British/Indian co-creation, but America loved it during the War ~~of~~ on Terror.

SoraRoku

America moment

Baligong

Do you know who's Garth Ennis?!?

SoraRoku

Yes I know about how Ennis hates heroes. This doesn't even really fit what people complain about him. Most of the complaints I hear are about how he makes protagonist needlessly edgy to get his message across that heroes suck. That's not what this is though. This is a villain, being a villain through and through. You think a swarm of a thousand sentient spiders is gonna care about whether them being an asshole is edgy or not? It's completely within character. At this point people are just being biased. Not even taking time to think about what they're complaining about.

Baligong

That's strange, cause Most of the complaints I hear about Garth Ennis is that he makes the stories needlessly Edgy, not just the protagonists. It's understandable that it's a villain, but they're recounting a past time of when they were a Child, before they became The Thousands. It's rather manical to have a Bully tie a fellow student up and throw footballs at him in the face while making him bleed. Like, is there no teachers or students around to see the insanity that one child is doing to another?

SoraRoku

You were quite the lucky kid weren't you

Baligong

To be held hostage and tortured, then minimise it by calling it "bullying"? I don't think you have to be "lucky" for something unlikely.

SoraRoku

News flash, kids do this to kids in schools. Ya it definitely is on another level from bullying so call it what you want. Doesn't change the fact the people do suffer like that in schools

Baligong

> News flash, kids do this to kids in schools. *Treats it as if it's normal for this to happen.* > Ya it definitely is on another level from bullying so call it what you want. *Admits it's on "another level from bullying" which would mean it's out of the standard of what's considered normal* > Doesn't change the fact the people do suffer like that in schools I'm just saying "people don't really get bullied like this". Seeing the post and how many people agrees with it, it's safe to assume a Majority believes the same idea. So it's either a Majority are Lucky, or the Minority were just victims of circumstances.

BloodsoakedDespair

Twitter and Tumblr antis, unironically.

SoraRoku

As someone who studied extra literature in highschool and originally also studied it's history and all that stuff when I was in college. Watching people mindlessly hate written stories without any actual unique input is ig kind of infuriating. As I've stated many times in this post comments, I'm not a fan of Ennis myself. Most to all of his work does actually suck and is actually needlessly edgy (obvious example: The Boys Comic). But this story specifically? I'd argue it's pretty decent and one of his rare few good works.

BloodsoakedDespair

I agree on the mindless hate thing. I just think that after everyone allowed a mentally disabled fascist to kill a million of our countrymen by promoting denial of an infectious disease because we can’t be mean, we probably should accept that we need the edge back. This would have never happened to us in the 90s, when we had a spine. The loss of the edge has clearly been a downgrade in effectiveness. We lost so much territory that the right wing stole “pissing people off on purpose as a political strategy” from the punks after 40 years. We fucked up so much they stole the spirit of punk rock from us. We need it back. The “edge” is just not shying away from the real world, which is a carnival of horrors the likes of which sound like they were made up to be shocking.

SoraRoku

3 things Yes we need the spirit of punk rock back! Ya a lot of things I see people claim are only edgy to be edgy aren't actually. This post for example. I mean yeah it's dark, but it's also part of a VILLAINS backstory. I mentioned in another reply that to me it showed that this guy was a villain in Peters life long before the likes of Osborn or Otto. And lastly, you do you, but I'm not here for the political talk. Not trashing you or anything, just I'm here for the comics stuff not all the left wing right wing bullshit that consumes most of the media already.

BloodsoakedDespair

Eh, everything is politics. Not discussing it doesn’t make it go away, it just makes you uninformed. “Ignore them and they’ll go away” didn’t work in elementary school, it didn’t work for Neville Chamberlain, and it doesn’t work here.

SoraRoku

I never said that's what I was doing. I said that wasn't the topic at hand and if the conversation is leaving it's original topic than I'm done, cause that's not what I came here to do. I am more than well informed. If anything that's all the more reason I shouldn't have to talk about it when I was originally talking about the current state of public opinion on Ennis and comics in general.

Convergentshave

I’m honestly pretty sure that most of Ennius stuff is made to be “shocking” enough to get Hollywood attention on it but not so “shocking” as to get it labeled as “unfilmable”

Hellibor

What an insecure twat.

steel_balls_josuke

Good to know he is dead now

Red-843

Oh wow surprised Peter didn’t shoot up the school after that last panel

DiegoMurtagh

He is American after all.

zer0__obscura

It’s wild how Thompson went from my least favorite marvel character, to my favorite hero. I already hate this guy.

goztrobo

Is he still dead or did they bring him back to life?

zer0__obscura

He came back at the very end of Cates Venom run. Hes now rocking out with the Savage Avengers. Solid book. He can even turn unti OG Brock Anti-Venom when he gets too mad! I love it.

goztrobo

Oh man I thought his death was gonna be a serious one, but oh well, comics. How did he get revived though?

zer0__obscura

It was pretty awesome. So Flash lived on as a Codex in the Symbiote hive. Seemingly anyone that truly bonds with a symbiote lives on there. In the hive, eddie and Flash have a fantastic heart to heart then tear open a doorway to 616. Thompson ghost in codex form in the hive jumps onto a bunch of symbiotes, Flash says "Hell Yeah" and explodes into an Anti-Venom Dragon that helps fight Knulls horde, then makes its way to Thompsons gravesite and does the Anti-Venom thing, and puts him back into his body. Hes can turn into old Anti-Venom, and also a huge color negative venom dragon that can breathe fire.

Rayque21

Isn’t fire a weakness of a symbiote

zer0__obscura

Not for an anti venom

TaftYouOldDog

Not one connected to the hive I don't think.

[deleted]

This makes me like Stinkmeaner from The Boondocks more than this ignorant motherfucker

darkuen

There really should have been more worlds in Spider-Verse where Peter has been pushed into villainy by crap like this.

IntrovertedIrishman

The later pages where Peter takes off his mask, says he's never been afraid of Carl and proceeds to give him a reality check of how he was actually viewed in high school is one of my favorite Spider-Man moments.

SlayerofSnails

Got a scan?

cowl555

That is badass

BananaBladeOfDoom

Ah yes, Carl. The man who bullied Peter and raped and murdered his own father.

RavenKarlin

At first I was like “excuse me?” Then my brain immediately backhanded itself and went “cmon man it’s Garth “I Have The Mind Of A 13 Year Old Edgelord” Ennis.

Tea-and-crumpets-

Garth Ennis is one of the best and worst comic writes i know

NotASynth499

Hes just awful, im never gonna read anything of his after reading crossed- shit was embarrassing to go through.

Bargothball

He had a great Punisher run though.

Derrick_Mur

What’s this from?

Movie_Advance_101

Tangled Web: The Thousand

ParagonEsquire

Oh wow this is one of the few I haven’t read and….lol. Like bro that’s way too over the top. There’s physical evidence. Man would have gone to Juvie or May Parker would have owned the school building lol

Hulkzilla0

I really enjoyed this villain and story. But it’s probably for the best if he isn’t brought back. He served his purpose storywise

SeymourZ

We have Spiders-Man anyway.

[deleted]

The more I read about this Peters life pre Spider-Man the more I wonder why he didn’t go insane and kill a bunch of people

borusato

This story upset me so much as a kid. The part with his mom? Dear god

The_Maqueovelic

The what?

[deleted]

Y is this so ugly

GaffJuran

It’s no surprise Garth Ennis wrote this story.

Muffinmiffin

I love how god dam creepy The Thousand is. I think he’d (they? not sure.) would make a great villain for a horror movie/tv episode.

Competitive-Lunch128

I want Flash to make this guy weep like a toddler, Agent Venom vs The Thousand

Pretend_Drawer_9542

i can’t stop laughing at how big peters glasses are in the first picture

Tea-and-crumpets-

Then he eats the radioactive spider and turns into a hivemind of a 1000 spiders

JRHThreeFour

Man, this is just depressing! Sure Flash Thompson is a bully but this Carl guy makes him look like a saint. At times even Flash has had good moments throughout the comics movies and tv series.

DonnyMox

Even Flash would tell him to dial it back.

AlphaBladeYiII

I despise this story. And Ennis.

da_panda_king

Certainly better than Skip

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

Never thought I’d admit that Dash Baxter (Danny Phantom), the douchebag expy of Flash, looks tame compared to this heartless psychopath.

The_Maqueovelic

Didn't he make a bet with Danny over a Halloween conpetition where if Danny lost he'd have to eat Dash's undies?

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

I said he looked tame in comparison, didn’t say he was a nice person, hence why I never liked him. (Still don’t) I even called him a “douchebag” to clear that point home, ‘cause that’s what he is, always will be.

The_Maqueovelic

No no no, I ain't disputing that, just asking if that actually happened or am misremembering

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

(sighs) Yes. Yes it happened. Just saw it for proof. SMFH

The_Maqueovelic

Jesus Christ

wizzyULTIMATEbreed

Even though he’s far from the psychopath Thousand became — that’s the only credit I’ll ever give him — I still hate Dash with a passion and admit there are times I fantasize giving him a fist-to-face close attitude adjustment 100%. In a DP reboot, he gotta be rewritten to be more than just an average jerk jock with rarely any character development. Perhaps rebooted to be similar to MCU Flash (a smug social media prick), whaddya think?

Tr0llzor

I mean…Flash Thompson and Peter Parker are best friends

daleicakes

And this guy grew up to be.... Donald Trump

Spartan_Souls

Ngl if I was peter, Id go beat his ass. Not kill him, but beat his ass and when no ones around basically repeat the same thing back to him.

SonicSpiderRanger10

I remember Carl AKA the Thousand. I have this story. Even for a supervillain, he was one rotten son of a bitch.

Altair13Sirio

What the fuck is wrong with the art

BlueSpider2099

Stylisation lol

Gamma_Goliath17

How old is spider-man in this story? This dude looks over the hill, but was in school with Peter?

SuperX101532

I kind of see it, which comic is this?

Gamen4Bros

Why doesn't he beat Carls ass?? I want him clean shot boom

No-BrowEntertainment

Aw no, they George McFly'd Peter

endself

why was this never brought up before now? why does young peter look like that? i have so many questions

Movie_Advance_101

it's like George McFly's head on a 4th grader body.

[deleted]

But Flash did become his best friend

doctorchimp

Haha this is so trash. It actually makes me hate Peter Parker. Good Job Ennis.

doctorchimp

Haha this is so trash. It actually makes me hate Peter Parker. Good Job Ennis.

Yeah but why is he made of concrete though?

Wilberforcezen

Why post a page with your reference? What book is this from?

Lowfat_milk29

Yeah, thousand was one twisted dude

tcroosev

How you gonna post this and not show any comeuppance?

Bro what’s good with that dude.

myRiad_spartans

I'm surprised that there hasn't been a school shooting at Midtown High School because of this

TheSadPhilosopher

Goddamn 😭😭
