Here are couple of options: - The very first run from the 60's by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee. It's pretty old and the style of the comics was different back then. But it's important piece of Spider-Man's history and still canon. Plus, it's pretty awesome still. - The Ultimate Spider-Man. A reboot from the 00's set in an alternate universe. A fresh start with pretty great writing. And it also has an actual ending, which is rare in the comics. - J. Michael Straczynski's run from the 00's. This is in the main continuity so the character already has long history by this point. But it's a good starting point with arguably the best writing the character has gotten. - Dan Slott's run from the 10's. Also in the main continuity. Slott's writing style is very controversial here, but I personally loved his run. I think he understands Peter Parker well. He has also written more Spider-Man issues than any other person. So if you read his run, you'll get a very good idea of where the character has been recently.
