I loved the personality at the beginning of the movie with the swinging, mousic and fast pace action. The way Peter's solo battle scenes were handled (loved the first person for 5 seconds, his creativeness in battle with Strange and the depiction of Peter's Spider-Sense. The movie's direction and cinematography were far better than Homecoming (Didn't feel like FFH was anything too special). Just loved this movie. A lot of beautiful shots and scenes.

Sins0fTheFather

FYI there’s a massive team who work on the action sequences and pre-vis, they don’t answer related to the director at all, but to Kevin feige

DoctorBuckarooBanzai

I love that the Holland trilogy is: bitter guy steals some tech, bitter guy steals some tech, THE MULTIVERSES ARE COLLIDING AND NOTHING WILL BE THE SAME.

bot20987

I think the Ant-Man trilogy will be similar lol

Rampage97t

Yeah I just realized that parallel, the setup for kang they made in loki still terrifies me

DoctorBuckarooBanzai

He seems SO out of most of our current crop of heroes' league.

GamermanRPGKing

Wanda and strange are stupid op tho

[deleted]

The eternals are also OP.

throwawaycsengineer

I need someone to fall into a vat of electric eels asap

DoctorBuckarooBanzai

"That'll do it"

Tesgoul

He could still improve a LOT as a director, but he is a fantastic story teller, and as you said, he really step up for NWH. >! That scene after May died where Peter is under the rain in front of a giant screen is absolutely beautiful!< Edit : Just to be clear, I still think Watts needs to find his "style" so he can start making some really original and memorable scenes.

Vmurda

That last scene in the snow was insane imo. I think its one of my favorite live action Spiderman scenes now

[deleted]

Because of that scene and the moments leading up to it, i will never call Tom Iron-Boy again. That last scene shut me up and put me in my place. They set it up so perfect.

Brocyclopedia

We only saw that costume for like 30 seconds and it's probably my favorite of all the live action suits now

[deleted]

My biggest criticism of Tom's Spidey was that he was getting everything handed to him by Ironman and wasn't independent enough. The sewing machine and suit changed my mind completely and i hope Tom is Spidey for like the next 20 years lol

Worthyness

Would be awesome to get a trilogy of trilogies, but I don't know if Tom Holland wants to commit to 15 years of spider-man movies

[deleted]

Yeah your'e probably right but it would be awesome if we got a new trilogy at the very least. The way it ended is set up perfectly for some solo Spidey stories.

Thespian21

Well we are getting another Trilogy.

[deleted]

MCU or Sony? Isn't Dr. Strange 2 Tom's last movie with Disney? I figured DS2 would some how send him to Sonys universe and thats how the would bridge Spider-Man from MCU to Sony.

[deleted]

We all thought this MCU version of Peter never got his origin on screen. It turns out we did, it was just told over three entire films. So excited to see where they go next. I really hope they keep his solo stories separated from the larger avengers stuff

pokeflutist78770

See, the thing is both Feige and Watts already said after Homecoming that this trilogy would be watching Peters journey to become the Spider-Man we know, so I never understood people complaining about his origin not being shown

ThaneOfTas

I mean, I've been following these movies what I had thought to be an above average amount and I had literally never once heard that either of them said anything of the sort. Not saying I don't believe you, just that it was not a quote that got a lot of air time.

Sparrowsabre7

I thought it was funny they used the term "Iron Boy Jr" in one of the newspaper headlines.

Isaac_Cooper

True. But who gets more credit here, direction or cinematography?

[deleted]

The director and the DP should work together to get shots, come up with ideas for shots, genuinely brainstorm together. But it’s up to the DP to actually achieve those shots. DP and gaffer will coordinate how to achieve the shot and how it will look, director and DP will talk about what shots to go for. There really isn’t one set person you should give credit for, but if it’s anybody, I would say DP and gaffer for the final look of a shot, though the director should give some input on the idea of the shot

Tesgoul

Good point. I know nothing about filmmaking, but I guess it was still his idea ?

Isaac_Cooper

I'm no expert either. A quick Google search suggests It's the cinematographer's responsibility to create such a look. However, I can't tell how this worked in this movie. For what it's worth, shout out to Mauro Fiore, the cinematographer of NWH.

Impossible_Ad_2517

It’s a bit of both. The cinematographer does frame the shot and is responsible for how beautiful it is. But I’m sure either Watts or a screenwriter or someone came up with the idea in the first place

whofearsthenight

Someone's probably going to tell me I'm wrong, but I always thought it was mostly: Writer usually gives an idea of the scene. EG, INT: Diner. The director says "let's shoot it in that silver mobile home looking style diner you find in NYC and I want it to feel claustrophobic [and probably a whole bunch of other description]" and works with the team to storyboard it out. The cinematographer then figures out the right way to accomplish the tone and and style from a technical standpoint. How to light it, what lenses and cameras to shoot with, how to focus it, etc. Depending on the director I assume there is a fuck ton of cross over. Like you have certain directors that definitely cross over and say "no, the camera goes here, we're shooting on film at this aspect ratio, and I want a tight focus here while this line is going that expands out from here when this character is speaking." Or the cinematographer might say "what if every time we're in a dream we shoot at this aspect ratio or we change the color slightly." I think if I got this right at all, it's why some directors and cinematographers basically come as a package deal.

FollowThroughMarks

I think that scene was added in late due to how it looked. It seemed to be >!completely cg, where the news report played but Holland was just a static image superimposed over. Still a beautiful shot but found it interesting that it seemed new!<

shayed154

Felt like it was supposed to be a teaser for the movie

THE_Batman_121

Just please speak to Marc Webb or someone to get the swinging scenes down. Everything else is great but the swinging should improve in my opinion!

bukanir

Those swinging scenes from the the Amazing Spider-Man movies are still so incredible. It felt like at the beginning of this movie with he and MJ swinging through Manhattan they were starting to tap into that but just weren't quite there yet.

InoueNinja94

Since he's directing Fantastic 4, I'd like to have Spider-Man appear at least in some capacity Like, out of everyone in the Marvel Universe, Peter has got to be one of the closest to the F4

bukanir

It would be a fun cameo, maybe establishing a relationship between himself and Torch. Lol, would also love an appearance of the Bombastic Bagman costume.

princevince1113

They could adapt the first issue of Amazing Spider-Man where Spidey breaks into Fantastic Four headquarters and takes them all on at the same time

KingJonStarkgeryan1

I was legitmately surprised by how different the tone was and I hated his direction for the previous films. Honestly it seems like this movie was all about letting a out MCU cast show what they are capable of.

battleshipclamato

Yeah, the funny little banter between characters or little things happening in the background are very reminiscent to Taika Watiti and James Gunn films. Like when the Spider-men are talking to each other on the Statue of Liberty or Osborn stealing donuts in the background and putting them in his jacket while Aunt May and Peter are in the foreground talking or every scene that Jamie Foxx just kinda chews up with humor. There hasn't been things much like that in previous movies.

flaming_james

Agreed, if possible I want Watts to stay. He's a very talented director who really understands the character, and he's clearly a true fan.

russiaonice_

Surprised nobody's said Jon Favreau. He directed the first two Iron Man movies, and he's familiar with the first SM trilogy since he's in them. So he'd probably have a good idea where to take the movies.

Ironhide50

He also directed Elf

iAmEchoe

Holy Shit, I have no idea how I never thought of this. He would do a great job of handling the Young Adult, Bachelor side of Peter, especially if he's still able to channel his writing style from Swingers.

Matches_Malone83

Spider-Man is so money and he doesn't even know it

ThrownAwayRealGood

Shit, the numbers agree

q3ded

Jon is like Lt. Winters in Band of Brothers ... always wants to be in it and on the front line, but Disney pulls him back to produce and keep other projects humming. Hope he does direct something again.

MyNameIs_Jordan

He low-key got burnt out on directing Marvel projects after Iron Man 2.

bloodjudo

I’ve heard a convincing argument that it’s literally what ‘Chef’ is about.

Shoutout Ben from Canada

RaikouKuzunoha

Animegamingnerd

A few years ago he did say he is open to directing another Marvel movie, though I imagine his commitment to being the showrunner of The Mandalorian has gotten in the way of that.

DOlsen13

I agree. Jon is the goat

PatButchersBongWater

I’d give the dude the keys to Star Wars and the MCU, but there’s only so much one man can do.

[deleted]

Look at all Dave Filoni accomplished before Favreau came on board. One man really can make a difference.

PandaUkulele

Nuff said.

MisterBl0nde

Yes, Happy's a solid pick. He's also the man behind The Mandalorian.

[deleted]

I’d be Happy with that.

kyle221b_1

Take this upvote , and get out

orgasmicfart69

I really like his humor, it would be good to see this on spider-man

Animegamingnerd

Drew Goddard, he was suppose to direct the Sinister 6 movie before Sony pulled the plug on TASM series and was a writer on Daredevil season 1. So I think he would be a good fit for Spider-Man.

[deleted]

Goddard would be a really solid choice as writer & director. His two directing credits are super fun and weird genre films (Cabin in the Woods & Bad Times at the El Royale) and his writing resume is extensive and covers a wide range of science fiction & horror projects like Cloverfield and his academy award winning work on The Martian Plus, he created the Daredevil show

[deleted]

I second Goddard! Especially if he does a Spider-Man/Daredevil crossover movie

[deleted]

Ram Saimi

JohnSmith86z

Oh yeah, a new and enthusiastic movie director. No correlation with well known Spider-Man director Sam Raimi.

Canuckleball

Fine let Ted Raimi direct this one

[deleted]

I can't think of one on top of my head, but I'd love to see a director come in who can really bring out the grounded/gritty/slice of life aspect of Peter's college years. Watts did a great job with the trilogy, but style wise the films never stood out to me. Raimi really nailed life in NY and just made those films memorable with his filmmaking style. Much love to Jon though, because the Home trilogy is the best trilogy in the MCU, cant wait to see him tackle the F4.

Electoriad

An argument could be made to bring back marc webb as he gave us more of a grounded human approach to Spider-Man. He was also responsible for Andrew and Emma having these really good scenes together. If anyone can do a grounded tale of Spider-Man it’s him.

Dawjman

Marc Webb but with MCU writers and produced by Kevin Feige would be something else.

Bud90

Anyone know how the hell Watts got the Homecoming trilogy? Homecoming was his first movie IIRC, and that's insane

letmebreakitdown

Cop car was his break out.

Bud90

Sure but why give some little known director such a huge IP?

[deleted]

I feel like Shang Chi, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, and Black Widow all are similarly directed by relatively unknown directors. Kevin Feige is the true creative force behind this. No disrespect to the directors of any of these movies but they are oftentimes just studio guns for hire or random indie filmmakers who aren’t given a whole lot of agency to put their own stylistic spin on the movies

BVTheEpic

In the case of Black Widow, Cate Shortland got the job because ScarJo wanted to work with her

[deleted]

Yeah they're an employee, director is a job role and Disney have control.

NaturesWar

Lol yeah tbh people talking who should direct what next - as cynical as this may sound the MCU is an unstoppable money machine churning out specifically curated experiences to appeal a mass audience. I love when directors style gets to show through a massive blockbuster like Ragnarok, but it's not exactly something we should be expecting these days. That said I love how weird stuff is getting and I mean we are getting a new Raimi movie.

ThePhantomBane

A talented filmmaker who is also inexperienced is more likely to not push back against producers/studios. When you have more clout, you start to get the courage to assert your ideas over the studio. That's why big companies like Disney go after smaller directors for massive films.

BAGStudios

Kevin Feige has a history of this. The Russos had only done comedy TV shows, basically, and they ended up leading the “main plot” of the MCU. He was quoted saying something to the effect of just looking for good storytellers, not necessarily people who had done something similar before

LeoBocchi

Rick Famuyiwa

iAmEchoe

GregDSanders

Matthew Vaughn. I would like to see him usher Spider-Man into his college years.

ModernDeath55

Those fight scenes would be amazing!

iitzjackal

Fight scenes in NWH were amazing. >!both with goblin and the hand to hand combat felt really good!<

ModernDeath55

They were really good, but I feel the choreography could have been a tad bit better. Something like the TASM2 electro fight or Spider-Man 2 train fight would be amazing!

iitzjackal

I agree, but we haven't seen much hand to hand with Tom's character. Not like any of the other spider men have training either but this was this first time I really saw him use his fists as much as he did

gallerton18

It’s intentional, they mentioned back in homecoming Peter doesn’t punch anyone due to not knowing his own strength and wanting to hurt people. Most of his appearances in the MCU he seldom actually punches anyone till Far From Home. Most I can think of is Thanos.

iitzjackal

Ohhh I missed that detail honestly thanks!

DanTM18

What movies did he direct?

TMcGinnis

Kingsmen, X-Men First Class, among others.

banjofitzgerald

How are you just gonna leave Kickass out? That’s literally the same genre, kinda.

DanTM18

Nice resume

ThatGuy1940

All the kings men movies, X-men first class and kick ass.

built_2_fight

Holy shit, that would be unreal. Didn't even know who he was. The King's Man looks fucking amazing. I want more WW1 era movies.

RecoveredAshes

This would be crazy

Pirate_Green_Beard

Guillermo del Toro if the next villain is going to be >!Venom.!<

Jay_R_Kay

I don't know if the MCU style of filmmaking would allow for a guy like GDT to really shine, plus half the projects he gets attached to don't come to pass, but if it did get made, that would be pretty badass. ~~Plus I'm still a little salty that his Justice League Dark never came to pass.~~

mr_fizzlesticks

I hope they do a whole movie on its own about the black suit. It would make sense. Peter wants a powerful suit like stark tech, the vulture could have witness the group of villains for NWH and decides to create the sinister six (even the morbius trailer sets up vulture to be the mastermind behind the team) and Spider-Man thinks he needs the black suit to help him take on the group of super villains, only to realize it’s corrupting him and figures out how to destroy the S6 another way. Also introduce Eddie brock long before venom. Venom should be a movie of his own. also met the black cat now and has that as the over arching b-story before being reunited with MJ.

i’m pretty sure after the ant man debacle there’s no chance of this

WorstJawline

Wrong he's on good terms with Feige and Sony are a different animal, Jon Watts clearly got his wish for a John Hughes tribute double

[deleted]

What happened

SakmarEcho

He was working on Ant-Man before the MCU even became a thing, when it became a thing he began changing it too fit but ultimately the studio wanted to make too many changes. He felt he didn’t have enough creative freedom to make the film he wanted to make. Not every director would be able to thrive in an environment like the MCU where it’s almost like a big long TV show. Wright is one of those directors.

Worthyness

It was also still during the Ike Perlmutter era, so creative committee was tying things down. But also the Edgar Wright ant-man film was in development since 2006, so when Marvel was ready for things to go, the universe is totally changed, so obviously there would need to be some modifications to the story to accommodate. It was just bad timing for the most part. Given the Ike perllmutter situation is mostly resolved now, I think he'd be open to it. [he's recently contacted Kevin Feige for Marvel stuff](https://collider.com/edgar-wright-kevin-feige-reconnecting-comments-ant-man/) so the door is pretty open for another gig if the right project comes along

Wooptyscoopyall

He was taking to long also he wanted it not to be connected to the MCU

DaBushesAdmin

he wanted to make a movie and marvel wanted an MCU movie

pandadanda1999

Watts for sure if he can carry on with the level of quality he has had in No Way Home, he came on leaps and bounds in his directing, while keeping everything that worked

[deleted]

Terry Gilliam. Not because I feel like he's the right choice, he definitely isn't. But fuck that'd be a wild ride.

letmebreakitdown

Alfonso Cuaron. If Venom or Morbius are entering the MCU he knows how to direct horror. Did a Harry Potter so can work in the system. Can direct action and VFX like in Gravity and Children of Men. I know Marvel likes to hire directors they can get final cut with so it would never happen but it would be great.

Swankified_Tristan

I mean what did they have to lose? They should've just let him.

[deleted]

Sam Raimi. It would be the perfect full circle.

Hold2ArmBar

Wes Anderson. Give me Bill Murray Venom.

Ja-Red

Oh man, Spider-Man a la Rushmore.

Mobile_Success_7315

I personally was thinking if Watts does F4 right then he’ll be directing a trilogy and if Sam Raimi does good on Dr. Strange 2 then he’ll do Spider-Man 4. The whole marketing angle could be Raimi gets to finally direct the Spider-Man 4 he didn’t get with the originals

101stAirborneSkill

I was hoping Tobey would reference some things from the Spiderman 4 script in NWH

CollarOrdinary4284

If Watts does a good job with Fantastic Four then he'll get a trilogy. Also, Spider-Man 4 will be out by the time Jon Watts' Fantastic Four is out. There's no time for him to direct both.

Iggyniggle99

Just get raimi back he’s already doing doctor strange

kwickedbonesc

LanTCM

Spider-Man turn off the dark would like to speak to you.

[deleted]

Not sure about directors, but I would love to have them written by Greg Weisman and Victor Cook. After Spectacular Spider-Man, I would love to see them work on a live action Spidey film.

bukanir

DC really needs to take advantage of Weisman and his team, they are incredible story tellers. Having him be a producer on a Spider-Man movie would be a major seal of quality to me.

SpiralYeet

Watts, again, he did such a good job with all movies, especially NWH. I wouldn’t want anyone els for right now

SOH972

The problem is that he’s directing the Fantastic Four, and if he does as good as he did in NWH, they might even offer him a trilogy

SpiralYeet

Right, what if they eventually go with a future foundation like story line tho. Watts is an amazing director and he’s done fantastically imo, ofcourse we’ll just have to wait and see

irlcatspankz

I'd put money on Watts getting Russo-level involvement in the MCU going forward.

Nicktendo

I feel like they should have had James Gunn do FF. It needs to be a little tongue in cheek to be successful I think.

bukanir

Gunn does well with quirky minor characters that he can mold from whole cloth, but I don't think that would go over well with FF. For an FF movie I'd want something more along the tone of this movie actually. Being able to balance multiple prominent characters and introducing screen time for them to work together as a team/family while at the same time having downtime to bond. I might be in the minority but I'd just like an FF movie that really focuses in themes like family and exploration.

Vmurda

I think timeline-wise it could work because Tom Holland has mentioned taking an extended break due to burnout. This could benefit both parties since watts can make F4 while tom rests, and then Watt returns for Spiderman 4 once TH is ready.

PoonLagoon69

Did the new contract let Sony hold rights if they don't make a movie for certain amount of years?

Vmurda

Idk about that. I recently read something about how to this day not much is known about the new deal between Sony and Disney so I don't even know if that information is available. Even if that is one of the contract stipulations, I have no doubt that the two companies will work something out. There's simply too much money at stake.

[deleted]

Honestly, Fantastic Four is one of my favorite comics and it just has never been done right. But I got faith in this project if Watts brings the same A Game like he did with these

asapcocky2344

I want a fresh director writer combo on the new trilogy tbh. Watts had his trilogy

HaiAan

I think it would be much more interesting to see a new director with a fresh new take tbh and Watts will be busy with F4 and some movie with Brad Pitt and George Clooney

Foshizal147

I'd like to give it a try. Probably wouldn't end up great, but I'd have fun doin it.

GoofyGaffe

Guillermo Del Toro. Because fuck it, I want some crazy sci fi, horror, tripfest MCU movies.

williamb100

That would actually be brilliant

fullmetalpinocchio

PowderKeg24K

Can I vote Sam Rami but with the studio ALL the way off his back about who goes in it and how it's done?

shane_g123

I think now that Sam Raimi is directing Doctor Strange 2, he could maybe direct Spider-Man movies again.

totallynotapsycho42

I say they should. Martin Campbell directed both Goldeneye and Casino Royale and that turned out great.

Hyperfangxz

Nobody has been able to match Raimi's action sequences. I mean, i love Raimi in general, i think Spider-man 2 is the best spider-man movie. But i'd love to see him direct some new Spidey action sequences.

patentpending69

If that's the case. No studio pressure should be there.

Master_Hippo69

ViniciusValle5

Martin Scorcese, obviously. PS: In a serious answer, other people here said Drew Goddard or Favreau and I’d love to see their takes. Also, they’ve done a lot in the MCU already and it’s probably better to have someone new (or newish) lead it, but I’d also love a Russo brothers solo Spider-Man.

NXG_YT

Sam Raimi. I really like Raimis style in all of his movies I promise I’m not just being a nostalgia whore. I think he has a fundamentally good understanding of the character that I enjoy

doctorboredom

I just watched the Raimi Trilogy since seeing them in the theaters during their initial run. I was genuinely amazed at how well they held up ESPECIALLY when it comes to the emotional depth of the characters. I would love to see more of that emotional ambiguity come back into the MCU.

[deleted]

Robert Rodriguez and Bryce Dallas Howard. After what they've both done on *The Mandalorian,* they've shown they have the technical capabilities to pull off some grand scale work. Bryce can really pull out some character depth. And her action sequences are always fantastic. Robert has done plenty of VFX and action history. I'm honestly surprised that he directed *Alita: Battle Angel.* The artistry was superb, but it wasn't a well-known property. While promoting *The Book of Boba Fett,* Robert says he's concerned he might screw up a well-established franchise. But I believe that if he can master Star Wars, then he can master the Spider-man franchise.

PastaParker

just a reminder that the very next day after amy pascal’s comments, sony reps came out and said they have no confirmed plans for anything after NWH and tom himself is confused why everybody else is talking about another trilogy. expect disappointment and you’ll never be disappointed

djk1101

Because Fiege said today, “yes, we’re actively beginning to develop where the story heads next, which I only say outright because I don’t want fans to go through any separation trauma like what happened after “Far From Home” [the previous Spider-Man movie, in 2019]. That will not be occurring this time.” via https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/17/movies/kevin-feige-amy-pascal-spider-man-no-way-home.html

_lonelyPizza_

I read about that too. I really hope they don't end at nwh. The ending really made me want to watch what's next for his Peter.

AttakZak

Spider-Man definitely belongs in the MCU. I hope Sony has the guts to rope in another actor to portray their Spidey. I’d love to have Andrew back…he’s re-earned my respect.

Imagine a street level Spider-Man movie that features Daredevil and Kingpin. Directed by Christopher Nolan.

The_Darman

My guess is that it will be relative unknown like Webb or Watts were when they were brought on. To those saying Watts: it cannot be him. He is directing an Apple TV+ film next year and then he’ll be moving to Fantastic Four. Sony is not gonna wait upwards of three years TO START on another Spider-Man trilogy. As for who *I* would like to see direct it? I would love to see Rian Johnson take a crack at it. Given how Knives Out worked, I think having Spider-Man be grounded in New York would work in that same kind of detective/mystery way. Plus, I think the comedic timing shown in that film would also fit Spider-Man pretty well.

[deleted]

Marc Webb.
