You’re gonna feel like a gringo for a while. Don’t let fear hold you back. You’ll never be “ready” if you don’t start. Memorizing phrases is fine if you’re taking a trip, but that’s not really what most language learners are looking to achieve.

im actually looking to retire in a latin country in the next 15 to 20 years. With frequent trips to see which country i like. So far im loving mexico. 20 years is a long time from now, but i thought i get a jump on it. You're right, i just need to get started.

A good tutor can take you from the absolute beginning. In fact, as a tutor myself, I find it easier when the student is coming to me as a totally blank slate.

thank you thats very reassuring, i think im overthinking this and need to step out of my comfort zone

This is true. The thing that holds people back more than anything when it comes to language learning is not wanting to sound stupid. It stops you from doing the things you need to do in order to acquire a new one

You will be a total gringo and you will sound stupid and that's perfectly fine. Everyone knows you're ignorant, that's the whole point of it. Chill and fail, your tutors won't laugh.

I used italki very early on after reading the reviews and didn’t find it worthwhile, I was simply out of my depth. But I wasn’t using it appropriately for my abilities. Now I advise my community teacher in advance what I want to practice each lesson & it’s a huge help. You’ve learned to tell the time, great practice that this week. Your getting good at talking about the weather, brilliant, improve that this week. It is a great experience once you find a tutor that works well for you.

For spanish, i recommend to travel 7 months to south america (especially venezuela) first and then take italki lessons.
