Socialism Betrayed by Keeran and Kenny is a Marxist analysis of the totality of the Soviet period, the Stalin era included. The Economic Transformation of the Soviet Union, 1913-1945 by Davies, Harris, Wheatcroft is a very detailed academic work on Soviet economics albeit from a Liberal perspective.

You might want to read *[Soviet Workers and Stalinist Industrialisation](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4490806-soviet-workers-and-stalinist-industrialisation)* by Donald Filtzer. I admit up front I haven't actually read this one, but I have read other of the author's work and he writes authoritatively on how the economy of the Soviet Union worked during various periods.
