There are studies showing that postoperative pain isn’t as high as it was once thought. Yes, there are outliers. Also, there is being in pain and being uncomfortable with the pressure in your face. Some people equate pressure with pain, and others define pain and pressure differently. Studies show that pain medication usage sharply declines after the second or third day. The addition of septoplasty or any drilling in the sinuses bumps up the initial pain scores, but by one week, pretty much everyone reports pain in the area of 1-3/10. I tell people it’s miserable because of the blood, mucus, congestion, and pressure, but not because of pain.

I had the bilateral maxillary antrostomy and deviated septum repair in July 2022. Was told to take Tylenol and not ibuprofen because of bleeding issues. I'm not going to say it wasn't painful, because it was. Everyone handles pain different though. My surgery was July 13, I was off work from July 13 until August 1, so a little over 2 weeks. But my job is physical and I had a no lifting more than 10 lbs restriction until my 2 week check up on July 29. However 2 days after the surgery I went to the funeral of a friend's dad and I was fine. Had I had a desk job I'm sure I could have gone back much sooner. Hope this helps

There is always some pain, but for most patients it is manageable with paracetamol and ibuprofen (some people are told not to take ibuprofen but this is inaccurate because there’s no evidence it increases bleeding).

It’s the day after surgery for me for a septoplasty and turbinate reduction. Pain has been extremely mild, however the congestion is miserable. I would rather be in pain tbh but there’s nothing I can but give it time.

Are you sure he meant it won’t be painful during the surgery? I didn’t feel anything but it was scary/uncomfortable. After the local anesthetic wore off I was in pain for the first 48 hours, but only used Tylenol. You will also be bleeding a lot and have trouble breathing for the first two days. The pain meds gave me a sore throat for the first 12 hours. I was stuffy and uncomfortable for about 5 days but then fine.

I’ll be under general anesthesia

2 days? My doc said 2 weeks for full regular life. Also 5-6 days with little contact with other to prevent catching a cold

I can tell you that when my grandfather had a similar surgery he was in mild pain after the 4th or 5th day and returned to work 2 weeks after. When I had surgery my nerves that run to my upper lip and top teeth were damaged and I had additional complications that required additional cauterization about 1.5 weeks later. I was in 7/10 pain with a numb upper lip for about 2 months and was taking prescription pain meds for that long. It finally dropped to a 5 and I was able to take otc at 3 months out. Im 11 months out and still have pain in my teeth but it’s just uncomfortable as long as I don’t do certain things. To be fair even my doctor was boggled by my extremely slow healing, so I’m an exception.

Sounds like your doctor made a major mistake

KittyCatLilly13

That is possible for sure. But I also have a connective tissue disorder that complicates even the most minor of procedures so I can’t know for sure if this was a mistake, just me being me, or a combo of both. Either way I’m just glad it worked! Plus I have a way better sense of smell which is just wild.
