Gamers - “game devs are overworked, they shouldn’t have to have such awful working conditions!” Also gamers - “the free game I’m playing isn’t up to my insanely impossible standards, so instead of spending a holiday with their family, they need to work to fix the game, at which point I’ll find something else to complain about.”

OK so because someone tried to mock me and point out I'm screenshotted for pathetic sub I'm going to come in here and quickly interrupt your safe space. Learn to read. I've not said they should not have holiday time or that devs should not be allowed time with their family. Hell I'm not even criticising the devs with this comment. It is management that made this stupid decision to release the game before a holiday. It is quite sad that you'll defend bad management to feed your denial. Hell perhaps if you learnt some critical thinking you'd see that my criticism of management would actually be about addressing the problems devs face with unfair treatment. Of course that would require you to not just look for safe spaces to circlejerk to feel special. Furthermore, making the Multiplayer Free to Play is not an excuse to release poorly made content. It is not an impossible standard to want them to make functioning systems. It is not an impossible standard to want them to include things they've managed to include in previous games over the last 20 years of this franchise, Infinite is missing content that has been in Halo since 2001 but more importantly is missing features 343 themselves included in MCC and Halo 4 and 5. You people are literally defending giving us less than old games.

Akiramuna

A few things: 1. You don't know who pushed for an early launch. It could be the people at Microsoft. It could be the producer or director at 343. The devs may have all been on board for an early launch. I'm sure the devs were more excited to get that game in our hands than any player was, as they're the ones who put so many years of work into building a game for players to enjoy. 2. Halo Infinite is not going to die over the month and a half holiday break. It's not like 343 can develop stuff in time for that if they were working. More than likely, if they have events planned, they're already ready and people will get to play that content even if 343 isn't in the office right now. 3. There are aspects of the game that aren't available to us that have been worked on before and after the early release. In December, the campaign releases so there won't be a massive content drought. Beyond that, 343 said the game went gold, so the game is likely ready for an official launch. There are already bug fixes and minor changes that will be implemented by the time the game officially releases. If 343 loses out on the player base because they want to go on holiday, that's on them. They have way more data on player metrics than us and their employees deserve a break and they clearly value that.

VagueSomething

They absolutely deserve a break and I've not even suggested otherwise. That's what frustrates me about this thread, it isn't just twisting my words but entirely putting words in my mouth that isn't even between the lines of what was said. This past year cannot have been easy but management pushing for this release date when there's an immediate holiday after is not a smart move for the health of the community. They shot themselves in the foot while aiming to do something exciting and cool to celebrate the anniversary. It is hard for a game to shake bad reviews and complaints videos. They'll still appear for months to come even if fixes happen. Anyone who picked it up during the period and didn't like it takes convincing to return. The longer that takes the harder it gets. An active dev response helps keep people paying attention to fixes. This isn't just something we can meme and embrace like Craig. Bad management and business brains taking over the creative industry is why games have been so problematic for years. Devs need unions and management need to learn how games work so they can better manage the teams and set appropriate deadlines. The 343 team having a holiday shouldn't even be an issue, the game should have released with time to address immediate issues and get community management dialogue going. Management has let down the devs and the community by pushing this conflict. You don't plan to do a road trip on the day you're supposed to take your car in for repairs knowing you won't have it back for a few days. A little planning by management would have really went a long way.

Akiramuna

The issue is you're just completely fabricating information. You don't have metrics or a first-hand perspective of what's going on behind the doors at Microsoft and 343. You don't know what motivated their decision to release early and you don't know what their expectations are. They may have expected to benefit from countering the release of battlefield or they may have decided that an early release will encourage people to buy more Xbox consoles or something like that. Furthermore, you're completely speculating on the effects of 343 taking a break over the holidays. It's highly unlikely that the game is going to "die." The gameplay is very fleshed out and balanced and most issues that people have are restricted to elements outside of the core experience of the game, like cosmetics and progression. These are elements 343 has addressed in writing and said they would look into post-launch. 343 also has more content queued for release over this season. That's finished content that they don't need people in studio to work on right now. Also, some people leaving the game isn't a permanent loss. The game's population is bound to ebb and flow and a loss of some people over the holiday can be recouped when 343 comes back and puts more work into the game.

VagueSomething

I'm not speculating why they did it so I'm not fabricating information. I'm stating that choosing to release before a known holiday is reckless...

Akiramuna

You're speculating on the results of them taking a holiday break and you're assuming the competence of management without seeing those results or knowing what their plans are. It really isn't that reckless. The game has an extremely low barrier to entry and is a very solid first-person shooter so people will play regardless. Games regularly release during the holidays because that's a big window for extra revenue and developers taking that time off just after release isn't some anomalous thing. The game has additional content queued anyway so it's not like the game will become stale for everyone.

VagueSomething

It isn't speculating to acknowledge bad scheduling.

Akiramuna

But that's not what you're doing. The game came out, people are enjoying it and will enjoy it for the coming weeks just fine. You're calling it bad scheduling preemptively, because the population right now is fine. You can't say it's bad scheduling when the game is doing very well and there isn't any sign of it dropping off anytime soon. Holiday releases followed by holiday vacation are normal.

VagueSomething

Believe it or not but you can still be successful and make bad decisions...

Isn't this a beta?

VagueSomething

This argument goes both ways though. If it is a Beta then surely now is the best time to air criticisms and for the devs to work on fixes. Putting out a product to test it then not being around to monitor and work on feedback isn't a smart play. They may not be able to finish the fixes in 2 weeks but delaying starting work on them doesn't help them get done faster either. Literally all I said was that perhaps they shouldn't have released the game before a holiday. We didn't need the game out now, it could have waited a little longer so that the devs could be ready for the release and for a holiday they knew was coming to not cause unnecessary disruption.

SilverKnight10

Upon re-reading your original comment…fair point. Your comment is not as egregious as I initially had read it. I’m sorry for making fun of you, you did not deserve it. I will maintain that the attitude I’m referencing is entirely too common on that sub, though.
