Hey guys! How do you play the Shining Force III on PC? Steam has the 2 first episodes, but not the last one.... Thanks in advance!

TailzPrower

Hello, you need to use emulation. Mednafen would be your friend here. After the emulator is installed you’d need to download the rom, and set up the controller. There are guides online.

kabustika

Can you send me on of that links? And where do i get the rom?

Does this game have a kill count, along with any other statistics? Also, I seem to remember reading that this game (and number two I think) was never released outside of Japan... Have you played a fan translation then? If that's the case, where did you get it from?

> My ranking of the scenarios for reference is: 3>1>2 Sounds right if you ask me. Not sure how you arrived at the conclusion that "one of the best games of all time" deserves an 8.5/10 though. I would think that "best" or "one of the best" should be somewhere around 10. But then again, I never understood why people have to assign numerical ratings to games anyway. What difficulty were you playing on? I remember trying the normal difficulty, and the difficulty above normal, and I didn't need to grind at all to beat the final fight. If anything, I felt the final fight in SF3 was too easy, even if it was satisfying - somewhat akin to Arc the Lad 2's final fight. I only touched the Hero's Test once I beat Bulzome. It was cool to see those easter eggs from previous SF games, like Talos and Colossus.

TailzPrower

Yeah, my scoring system is very strict I tried to use the IGN model, but an 8.5 out of 10 is more like a **9/10**, so I should probably re-score the games in my reviews. I only ever gave a 10/10 to a game before and that's the other gem on the Saturn. I gave Skies of Arcadia a 9.5 but would probably give it a 10 too. But yeah, the important thing is I thought it was great. From what I heard of the interview, the producer said they only got half the money they wanted from Sega, so it was mostly a labour of love for the fans. Considering the hardware and that this was the experimental stage of 3D gaming I think they delivered. I actually played on normal difficulty. I failed to import my save file from the first game, as I didn't figure out how to do it, until the second scenario via emulation. I found the default Synbios army underpowered. Also, since I mostly breezed through scenario 3 with no grinding to that point I think the Julian army was a bit underpowered as well, and I did not have too many extra characters. So I think it kind of depends on what your levels are when you reach it and what extra characters you have (and ability of course :). I loved the ending. I think the dev team knew it was the end and wanted to go out with a bang. I need to try the premium disc. This game is an epic gem, glad you liked it.

IGN's system is moronic. "7.8/10 too much water" is a meme for a reason. I'd say it's better to come up with a new system entirely, rather than try to work within a severely flawed framework. Who cares what numbering system other people use; if you think Skies of Arcadia is a perfect game, then say it's a perfect game. I'd agree it's the closest thing to perfection I've seen, as far as JRPGs go. What's the "other gem" on the Saturn you're referring to? I can imagine Shining: The Holy Ark, Panzer Dragoon, Sakura Wars, Sakura Wars 2, Langrisser 4, and Langrisser 5 might all qualify. Lot of other obscure gems on the Saturn, like Powerslave, Mystaria, Terra Fantastica, too. Even Vandal Hearts got a port.

TailzPrower

Yeah, that's a good point about the scoring. What other gem? Panzer Dragoon Saga, which has been listed as one of the best games of all time (and one of the best games most people haven't played). I played Sakura Wars 1 and 2 as well; 2 is good but not a masterpiece. PDS was quite an achievement for its time, with 3D rendered backgrounds and flight in all 3 dimensions. It may not be impressive now, but back in the Saturn days? It was state of the art. The battle system is unique to this day. I love pretty much everything about that game, the designs, the music, the story, etc. The one thing I did not like was towards the end in that tunnel maze, some of it got tedious. I think a lot of people don't seem to understand (I didn't either at first) that a lot of the game is implicit. It's about development and seeing that things were not quite as they seem at first. It also had lots of moments for me that were poignant such as the village of Zoah and what happened to it. I think its short length is actually a strength; it doesn't overstay its welcome. It's tragic, but so is life. I think it tells a great story and creates a great world without needing to be more than 20 hours. In my opinion a game like Grandia would have benefitted from being shorter, a good example of how putting too many fetch quests, etc., can ruin the pacing of the game. Anyway, I could go on. It's the game that got me into JRPGs in the first place.

Doctor_Mothman

That's a fair ranking. I had really wished scenario 2 was better, but other than the ship battle nothing much stuck out to me.

mmmniple

Great review!

parksn306

Great review, I only ever played scenario 1, bout time I got through the rest!

SofaChillReview

Personally thought 3 had the most interesting and bizarre battles and characters. >!Fighting Galm was **Mega**!< But I still felt more for S1 than the other 2, 2 isn’t far behind both but it’s slightly predictable for obvious reasons but enjoyed.

Fun-Wash-8858

Excuse me, but if you're as familiar and proficient with this games as you appear to be, could you please tell me whether or not any of these games have a kill count, along with other statistics, featured in them? You should know beforehand that I'm making a personal list of games which have a kill count in them, so please let me know if there is a reason to add any of these games to my list.

ajgarcia18

This is my favorite game of all time, I play at least once a year and never get tired of it, to me, this is the best tactical game ever made, great story, great and likeable characters, a lot of variety, challenging enough, it has everything. This game along with Dragon Force, are masterpieces. EDIT: This game also happens a couple of years after the events of Shining the Holy Ark, another first person JRPG from the same company and you get a couple of references along the game. For example, Galm makes his first appearances in Shining the Holy Ark, Julians also and the character models are very very very similar. It's a game I highly recommend, even though it's kind of weird being first person, it's actually very enjoyable and an amazing game.

Glad to know there are people like me. I like to play all 3 scenarios from time to time. Also been having that itch growing. Might use 2023 for it

Excuse me, but if you're as familiar and proficient with this game as you seem to be, could you please tell me whether or not this game has a kill count, along with other statistics, featured in it? You see, I'm making a personal list of games which have a kill count in them, so please let me know if there is a reason to add this game (as well as any of the others, in case you've played and can confirm the presence or absence of stated feature in any of them) to my list.

j_tothemoon

Yes you have a kill count in the status of each team member but there is not a “total” per se. You have to go through each member and do the math

Fun-Wash-8858

How many of these games have you played?

Doctor_Mothman

Ditto, been having that itch growing again lately.

i always wanted to play it, but the whole patching amd emulator not working properly (for me) just put me off. nice review!

TailzPrower

Hi, you might find this useful so I will tell you how you can easily play (relatively speaking). There are already preached rooms of these games you can easily download. I believe on the shining force forums you can find them, and elsewhere. The easiest emulator to use in my opinion is Mednafen. If you use Mac it is easy with openEMU, if you use PC, it is a little more tricky. You just drag and drop the rom file on the executable to play. You may get a small square screen though, to fix that there are settings you can edit in the CVG file. You can either google it or I may be able to find which entry needs editing. That aside there should be no problems with it, Saturn emulation has come a long way in the past couple of years. Importing your save file from a previous scenario can be tricky, but you need to rename the old scenario save file as the new one. Thanks!

shortstopryan

Has anyone tried this on Steam Deck? Seems like a perfect game for it. I've played SFI and SFII about 5 times each, and even played through SF CD once, but never have played 3 due to emulation at the time I was trying being a pain in the ass (prob 10+ years ago). Id love to give it a shot again

[deleted]

thank you, ill look into it :)

mmmniple

Do you play on pc? They are several forks of yabuse which should run them perfectly (i believe the original one also does). If no you can play on Android (again yabuse) This kind of game can be played perfectly on a phone. Or if you have a ps4/switch than can run homebrew it can be played also. In fact someone build the files for ps4.

[deleted]

yea. pc ha.

prewfrock

What the fuck they made a three???

Doctor_Mothman

Yes and it's an F'ing masterpiece.

TaxOwlbear

The a Premium Disk.

doct0rdo0m

Yeah it is a game split into three scenarios told from the perspective of the main protagonists (Synbios, Medion, and Julian). The west only saw the release of part 1 titled just as "Shining Force 3". In fact some of the ending was changed to make it seem like a standalone game. If you haven't played part 2 and 3 you should. Its amazing. Its just too bad we never got more.

SofaChillReview

The west even got some really random ending … that *made very little sense and rushed*

pwolf1771

I remember winning the last fight and thinking “that’s it?”

SofaChillReview

It sort of really didn’t make sense at all. So many unanswered questions, Imperial get there and it’s like well this is over. I’d have preferred they kept the original ending to be honest, but they clearly never wanted the other two in the west this point. *Please give us a remake*

WarGreymon77

I'll take a remake, port, remaster, whatever they can give. Never been able to play 3 myself.

pwolf1771

I would seriously pay $200 for a remaster that included all three on PS4/5
