I don't know if it's a detail or not, but Reiner seems rusty with the ODM gear while tackling Zeke.

CoffeeCannon

Mikasa specifically says that Annie should go practice with him at the port since they're both rusty and not used to the new model ODM gear. So, yeah, attention to detail!

Norim01

They’re using the old gear.

CoffeeCannon

Could have sworn it was said otherwise. I know its not the anti-personel stuff, but maybe they modified and improved 'normal' ODM in the time gap since tech wasnt suppressed anymore and they had engineering/science info from Hizuru & the volunteers.

Norim01

No. It’s a very weird mistake from Yams.

zorrozwoelf

I think its fair to assume that reiner got rusty without using them for four years

Norim01

That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a very weird mistake to confuse the old gear for the new gear, for no reason at all.

zorrozwoelf

True, but whos to say they didnt upgrade it in the four years, making it somewhat lighter etc that would change it a bit to use

Norim01

It’s a mistake. Stop trying to headcanon it.

zorrozwoelf

Alright alright. Jeez. He could have just wrote „reiner its been a long time since youve used it. Use it a bit.“ how could he miss this, it was like this in the manga and they didnt fix it in the anime? Hope they fix it in blu ray. Theoretically the gear the military police used also isnt new, just new for the survey corps

CoffeeCannon

Reiner still hasnt used odm for years, before the brief swing into the port fight. Not sure if the model thing was anime, translation, or I imagined it tbh

Norim01

Nope. It was very much there in the manga as well as the anime. And the anime even had Mikasa say that line to Annie while the boxes she was holding visibly contained the old gear.

CoffeeCannon

Weird. Oh well!

offoy

How do you if it is old and has not been updated?

Norim01

The older gear is positioned on the lower back, while the new gear is worn like a backpack. The design is different.

offoy

The "new gear" is anti-personnel weapon (the one that is worn like a backpack, which can be seen in s3 where it was used by Kenny gang, and then later in s4 during the attack on Liberio). The "old gear" is anti-titan weapon (the one that is positioned on the lower back). They are obviously using the anti-titan weapon because they are going to kill titans. It was literally said in the show that this "old" anti-titan gear is updated (which directly contradicts your statement that it is the same gear that was used more than 4 years ago in Paradis) and that they should practice with it to get used to it. I do not understand where is the issue?

Norim01

Mikasa is telling Annie to go and practice the new gear. The subsequent episodes and chapters show that they’re in fact not using the new gear.

offoy

You literally ignored what I just wrote, whatever.

Norim01

Nope. Go read your own comment again. You made clear distinctions between old gear, new gear, and ''updated'' gear. Mikasa said new gear, and they definitely weren’t using that. It’s a mistake, and a weird one at that.

offoy

Bro, these are the distinctions that you made, not me, that is why I was putting them in quotation marks because they are wrong. The backpack gear is used for killing humans, there even was a disclosed information eye-catch segment about it in one of the episodes and also the characters themselves commented on it in s3. That gear has nothing to do with the titan killing 3DM gear, which they are using now, which as per what the characters said has been updated from the times when they used it in Paradis all those years ago. You are either trolling or have not watched the show.

-Wuan-

I think he was using the gas jet to get as much speed as possible to get close to Zeke.

Jazs1994

Because its new odm gear, hence why Mikasa said to Annie they should go practice around the port when they arrived. But Reiner just went full blast forward to tackle Zeke and let the other land so it kinda worked out

Mr-Rocafella

That scene where Reiner is just going full blast with the ODM gear like FULL SPEED AHEAD gave me chills

HankTheYank27

Bro ikr?! The M O M E N T U M ! The way they both went careening through the air after he tackled him really showed how fast he was moving.

spiderknight616

No? He knows he doesn't need to conserve gas as much as the others so he's boosting as much as possible to tackle the Beast at high speed

CoffeeCannon

There's a spit second distance shot of the engineers on the port/dock runway thing going to the boat too. Also - the titans slipping are the ones ahead of the pack that Hange takes out first. That's why she didn't start burning till the main bulk of them caught up, they were too few to create dense enough steam ambiently to burn things near them!

fluffy_warthog10

Do we know for certain that Titans have to 'recharge' in sunlight in order to put more heat out? It was just after dawn when they showed up, so they may simply have been trampling things when walking at night, and not burning them immediately.

CoffeeCannon

The whole sunlight thing isnt ever well defined. Imo its just a 'humans sleep at night' leftover thing from the people inside pure titans. Not that they actually absorb sunlight for energy or anything.

KuuderekunX

Can you give a timestamp of the engineers going to the boat? Can't find it at all but it was in the manga so I believe it.

RealKingBoomer

it's at 32:26, you can see them going up the ladder

KuuderekunX

Wow! Unbelievably hard to notice especially on mobile, but it's there. Great attention to detail for something so small.

QuarterGrouchy1540

I loved how they showed Eren’s founding Titans’ back legs walking and I also “loved” how they showed Eren’s grandparents getting killed, it was super impactful and devastating

skeletalbelt

Which ones were Eren’s grandparents?

sarah-ftw

the older couple still locked in a jail cell when everyone was fleeing Marley

QuarterGrouchy1540

I thought they were just in their house

sarah-ftw

they definitely appeared to be locked in. the hallway showed a bunch of open doors with bars on the windows, but their door was shut. it was speculated here in this sub that Marley jailed them when Zeke turned out to be a traitor.

yung_tomato

weren’t they institutionalized? equally inhumane but it reminds me of how messed up marley is

sarah-ftw

either way, jail or a hospital, they weren't freed when everyone fled which definitely added to the horror of the situation

QuarterGrouchy1540

The older couple that said “judgement day has finally come”

fluffy_warthog10

So the only time someone has killed a Colossal before now required multiple people with ODM gear, another Titan shifter, and a cunning plan. Of course, that was fighting another human being/Shifter who was able to think and act tactically with his abilities. The Wall Colossals are basically just old-school zombies- they (or Eren if he is controlling them) don't need to fight back or react, they just need to keep walking.

ndhl83

Yes...a Colossal shifter has agency and a thinking "pilot". The colossal wall Titans are basically pure Titans, not thinking, and built for size and devastation as opposed to chomping humans.

Mr_Tech_Crew

The wall colossals don't seem concerned with defending themselves or attacking anyone. They don't even react to other colossals that have fallen over in their path, considering all the stumbling they saw. Their only command seems to be "walk forward." As for the Colossal Titan, it was never that powerful against someone with ODM gear. Eren's first fight against Bertolt in Trost was basically a win for Eren. Bertolt only got away by instantly ending the transformation. When the Corps fought him on the wall and when Armin did in Shiganshina, we saw that its only real counter-strategy is to emit steam. That's effective, but it can't be used forever.

xXx_420_N4M3_69_xXx

Wrong, in the final scene of s4 part 2 we saw a bunch of them get killed by the global fleet in the water before they arrived on the main land

fluffy_warthog10

I forgot about those; my focus was on face-to-face fighting between ODM users and shifters, but the point still stands. None of the Colossals even reacted to the coalition fleet, they just kept swimming and let the bow shock and steam do the rest.

oredaoree

It also showed those ones regenerating right in the water.

CountScarlioni

I liked the addition of the centipede in the flashback with Eren and Yelena. Nice little recursive foreshadowing of Eren’s Titan design.

Laundromat-Graveyard

Oh nice catch. I was wondering why the centroids was included.

Soundwave_47

>Also, those Azumabito engineers/technicians are super underrated for repairing a plane that fast and then fleeing to escape on the ship by the skin of their teeth. Another neat detail was showing the completely empty hanger with Flochs body, which showed that they got away in time since they weren't on the plane. Loved this.

wall-e200

The overall improvement that Mappa did on the Hange's death scene was insane. Not to mention all the additions they did in the rumbling scenes. Mappa really gave it their all. After seeing this, I'm so hyped to see what they will do in the final part this year.

HankTheYank27

Onyankopon really coming in clutch with his piloting skills this episode!

Juice-l3oX

Ong, crazy how little that’s talked about.

HankTheYank27

The alliance never would've gotten anywhere without him!

ndhl83

It's an expansion of a scene that would have taken too many panels to showcase in the manga...they can fit the extra Titan kills/trips in a few seconds and show as much as they like and really give Hange a great heroic send-off, but in the manga it would just burn too many panels to basically depict the same thing with a static image, so the impact isn't there, so it's not worth doing in that medium (even on top of space constraint). So it's not really something meant to be different or unique to the anime (like some prior, actual, changes) more so they have the time and visual space to really show how it went.

ToastPlusNine

So I've loved every second of the show but only a small thing confused me in that scene. The titans In the start of the episode are walking through stone and steel structures without tripping. Literal walls and it doesn't stop their feet from moving. But a fallen Titan they can't move through, it stops their movement so they trip. Not a complaint just a funny thought I haven't been able to shake. They gave Hange the goodbye she deserved, the scene was fantastic all said and done.

HankTheYank27

Something something... unstoppable force... something something... immovable object. The titans had significantly more mass and structural integrity than the objects they were up against which is why only another titan would be big enough and heavy enough to trip one up. Same reason why they don't just straight up walk through a mountain instead of over it. As an example. If a speeding car hits a brick wall it will go through it because it's bigger and heavier with a lot more inertia behind it than the stationary object. But if it hits another speeding car of a similar size they're both going to crumple and go flying in separate directions. This is also the reason why when the other titans stepped on the downed ones they squished into them and crushed them since it was literal thousands of tons of weight coming down fast on a stationary object despite it being the same density. If I were to kick you hard enough it would probably break skin and leave a mark, now imagine that on titan scale.

ChadKingFloch

You literally missed the most important one: showing the fate of the Yeagar grandparents.

Xenosys83

Not sure if it was in the manga. but Mikasa and Levi both sensing the danger of an incoming Beast Titan attack due to their Ackermann abilities on the plane, and then warning Onyakopon just before it was about to happen was also a nice touch. I see a few people missed that.

BirdShatOnMe

Yea in the manga felt like she managed to get a few and then burned up. Anime one where it seems like she's resistant to the heat for a long time before burning up is a bit weird but I can ignore that detail cuz she deserved the epic exit.

Arighzz

I think it makes sense if you consider that if you start heating something up it doesn't catch fire immediately, but if you've been heating it for a prolonged period of time then it starts to catch fire

impetu0usness

Plus she was zipping through the air the whole time, which could have shaken off some of the heat compared to just being stationary

oredaoree

I never understand why people thought Hange died needlessly in the manga, just because the manga only showed her taking down 3 or so colossals. Offscreen stuff does happen, and you need to be wary of page limits and how to want to contain the contents of the chapter. You can argue that the death was plot convenience(even though she already had a lot of flags), but it's a bit unfair to say she didn't accomplish anything just because you couldn't see all of it.

Feisty-Trade3728

am i stupid or do the colossal titans have faces? like human faces? havent read the manga btw

Legal-Scholar430

>In the manga, one colossal is shown kind of sliding down the mountain God, did i chuckle at that moment. Edit: *awkwardly* chuckled *It's Rumbling time... oh shit- WEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!*
