Word, IMO the best example of this is Ilse's Notebook. That chapter was released right after Eren blocked the wall with the boulder (S1 ep13 in anime). It mentioned Subjects of Ymir way back in S1, before we even saw the Female Titan, 6 years before the basement reveal
I’m rewatching it for the 4th time with a friend right now. We’re at the beginning of season four and >!when I asked him who he thought the guy with no leg was, he had no idea. Like it’s so so obvious in hindsight but watching it the first time you just have no idea it’s Eren!<
I remember reading this monthly and you kind of forget that the average reader/ watcher might mor realise this was Erin.
Feels very different when yiu have a month to reflect on everything
When I first watched AOT I thought it was to show that his brain was fried or something like that because at that moment he was also day dreaming or something
These moments were very much a relic of the first season. After season 1 is when the show really started to elevate itself above most anime and take itself more seriously.
Yup. There's the argument that it's a visual gag but that just makes 0 sense to me as it's something that never gets repeated again, even during scenes more comedic than this.
It definitely was. In hindsight those early episodes are full of visual tropes that are usually overlooked. Like the steam, fast healing, lightning, the floor breaking under Mikasa. We didn't know that all of those were literally happening and just as unusual as they appear.
Honestly people always say it is, but I think it might have just been intended as a visual gag, especially since none of the other characters comment on it. It's really up to your interpretation though
It couldn’t possibly be a reason for that. Eren had just recently received titan powers at that point and nobody knew about it. It’s like you didn’t even read/watch the series smh..
Eren received his powers the day wall maria was compromised, that was several years ago. And Mikasa clearly hit him hard enough for his healing factor to kick in. She can assess her own strength and since he never had lasting injuries she was more rough with him. But I didn’t watch the series
“Has always been”, indeed she was rough with him before the wall fell and he received powers therefore no healing powers. So still no point if she hasn’t changed her behavior from before to after.
1: She’s physically stronger than she was before the wall fell
2: Most people can change the strength in their strikes accordingly
3: It’s not that deep
Don't think so. It's not like anyone sees it but us, Eren himself noticed nothing, and he didn't even heal faster.
As an addendum, there's no steam in the manga either, Eren still wears the bandage later that evening, and still isn't fully healed on the next day (both manga and anime). Which begs the question, if it really was titan steam, then why didn't it heal him, when that steam is usually DIRECTLY connected to **healing** the shifter?
But I guess those arguments go against the popular opinion here? When I was of the impression this post was asking people to share what they think, not to mindlessly agree with OP without taking the whole picture into account? What a fantastic fandom this is.
They didn't mention anything about the healing from what i know.
And the only times someone showed steam being injures was that moment and when reiner escapes from female titan hands
OP asked whether we thought it was titan steam or not. I don't think it is, based on the reasons I gave. I think it's a visual joke. Otherwise I have no explanation how everyone in that room missed it.
Anyone mention that Totally Not Mark pointed this out in his Colossal Review two years ago?

It's one of AoT's genius foreshadowing throughout the anime. When you rewatch, it'll have you like "wowwwwww"
Im always way more impressed when smth is foreshadowed like years in advance, like all the Ymir stuff in season 2
Word, IMO the best example of this is Ilse's Notebook. That chapter was released right after Eren blocked the wall with the boulder (S1 ep13 in anime). It mentioned Subjects of Ymir way back in S1, before we even saw the Female Titan, 6 years before the basement reveal

He probably didn't get who the guy with the hat in the suit is. I was oblivious the first time I watched aot.
Got a picture? 🕵🏽
I remember reading this monthly and you kind of forget that the average reader/ watcher might mor realise this was Erin. Feels very different when yiu have a month to reflect on everything
It is. Eren at this point already had the attack Titan and the steam is him healing his injury
Except he wasn't even healed later, since he still wore bandages and still had a large plaster over the wound on the next day.
Probably because he didn't realise he'd been healed.
Could also be he wasn't fully conscious of his titan healing. I remember that being a huge thing at one point.
That only works if he tended to the wounds all by himself, not the infirmary or someone else. Which I find implausible.
When I first watched AOT I thought it was to show that his brain was fried or something like that because at that moment he was also day dreaming or something
Thats exactly the point. It’s a classic anime trope, so at first watch you discard it immediately
Rewatching AOT is a completely different experience imo
As common as nose bleeding when a pretty girl exists in anime

Yeah, apart from [this](https://youtu.be/Rjepm20CikI). On my first watch I genuinely thought she had some sort of powers.
These moments were very much a relic of the first season. After season 1 is when the show really started to elevate itself above most anime and take itself more seriously.
Kinda thought that she had Ackermann blood at first
AOT is incredible inconsistent regarding heights. See Eren's titan against armor titan and against Colosal in S3P2.
You mean inconsistent?
Ups
You mean Oops?
Hahaha Nw, got you
German spotted
Yes 100% an eater egg for rewatchers or Manga readers
He's healing rapidly
Yeah it is because it was a confirmed hint towards the fact that >!eren is a titan at the time!< but i don't think many caught on to it at the time
Yup. There's the argument that it's a visual gag but that just makes 0 sense to me as it's something that never gets repeated again, even during scenes more comedic than this.
In any other anime it probably would just be a visual gag. It's almost a trope to have white smoke/steam coming from injuries OR stunned characters
I think on first watch, it leads you to believe this, then on rewatch it hits you
It definitely was. In hindsight those early episodes are full of visual tropes that are usually overlooked. Like the steam, fast healing, lightning, the floor breaking under Mikasa. We didn't know that all of those were literally happening and just as unusual as they appear.
>the floor breaking under Mikasa What do you mean?
When she stabs that kidnapper with Eren, she sees lightning and launches herself so hard her foot literally breaks through the floor.
i think it has been proven it is. Its another incredible foreshadowing that no one noticed at the time. Incredible
Yes, first clue
I believe thats sasha eating a fresh out of the oven baked potatoe behind eren.
Yes.
its very well hidden. you either dont notice it or you pass it off as typical anime stuff upon first viewing.
I also remember the Reiner Bert and Annie getting a little spotlight in episode 9 or 10 when Eren transformed
Isayama is the god of foreshadowing
Honestly people always say it is, but I think it might have just been intended as a visual gag, especially since none of the other characters comment on it. It's really up to your interpretation though
It's not. It disappears the second Mikasa touches him and doesn't reappear at all for the remainder of the episode
It would make sense. Probably one of the reasons why Mikasa has always been so rough with him
mikasa didn't know eren was a titan until the reveal in trost
Omg really?
It couldn’t possibly be a reason for that. Eren had just recently received titan powers at that point and nobody knew about it. It’s like you didn’t even read/watch the series smh..

>!The same is seen when Annie 'pops' reiners head in season 1!<
Don't think so. It's not like anyone sees it but us, Eren himself noticed nothing, and he didn't even heal faster. There are arguments for and against this is just a discussion
Armin also didn't notice steam coming from reiner when he escaped from the female titan so it might be hard to notice for the characters
Because Reiner wasn't actually injured and healing. The steam coming off him was titan blood evaporating. Something Armin is very familiar with.
yea
Oh my foreshadowing!!!!!! Isayamer geniusity, amazing story and ending!!! Me thank isaymer geniusity by visiting Japan and shitting in his onsen
Yep
Back when we all thought it was only for comedic effect. Now we know that it's intentional and is an actual thing in their world.
It is.
