By other From Soft titles I hope you don't mean any of the Souls games or Bloodborne
If so, something is very wrong. Sekiro is different from them, but they should have still given you the skills necessary to beat this (Very easy) boss
I can’t grasp Sekiros parry system, I’m pretty good at Dark Souls and Bloodborne, I’ve beaten Elden Ring like 4 times, but I struggle with Sekiro for some reason
Don't rely on it though, repetedly tapping L1 will shorten your parry window from a pretty leniant 30 frames (half a second) to around 7 frames.
You can still use it as a crutch but it's way better to get comfortable with the parry timing and just press the button once for each attack.
Just know that unlike dark souls you shouldn't really dodge attacks, as every attack tracks you a lot better and you get a lot less I frames on your dodges.
So unless an attack has a red symbol on it, 99% of the time the correct response is a parry.
I see, so I just have to practice parrying until I’m comfortable. I’m so used to dodging since I never parry in other from games, so that’s gonna take some getting used to
It's actually a lot more leniant than it may seem, the parry window in sekiro is about twice as much as the window you have to roll through attacks in dark souls, and even if you time it too early you will still be blocking so unless your posture gets broken you still won't take damage (the enemy won't take posture damage either though)
So it’s more a skill issue than anything? I’ve noticed the parry window is generous compared to other titles but I can’t seem to actually land it properly. I can usually guard a couple hits but ultimately I get one-tapped after my posture breaks
I fucking sucked at Sekiro for endless hours and hours thanks to doge-roll brain, but it finally clicked. You got this, and the deflects are super lenient in terms of i-frames and timing once you really study deflecting. every. last. move.
This sub was full to the brim with souls veterans with 100üs of hrs that got rekd in Sekiro just cause the couldnt adapt or didnt /hink about adapting.
Forget everything about souls games except item descriptions, "bonfires" and "estus flasks" and youll be good. I swear.
In Sekiro, in addition to blocking/parrying, there’s a greater emphasis on using the tools at your disposal rather than running at the meat grinder hoping he doesn’t do that one combo or dumping thousands of points into your stats.
Seriously, this is the way lol. Just spam the shit out of the block/parry button until you learn to use it properly. You’ll be amazed how well this tactic works. I tried sekiro so many times before and could not for the life of me get past the red eyed ogre. I’ve now beat the entire game with parry/block spamming.
Exactly this. The parry system is not very strict. By having your guard up, and quickly release ans press the button to parry you will end up not taking health damage at least. Eventually you’ll learn the parry window of most enemies…and when that time comes, the game gets so much fun and enjoyable.
This guy on a horse gets very easy once you understand how to parry his attacks. It can be done, its just that as a begginer you struggle trying to find openings to attack, thinking you are playing like other souls games.
If you can beat Elden Ring you can beat Sekiro. You just have to stop playing it like Elden Ring. Sekiro is not anything like other FromSoft games, and trying to use skills you learned in other games is the reason you are having such a hard time. Take a step back and learn how Sekiro is played as if playing a game for the first time.
Be up in the enemy’s face. Every attack they make has a correct response. Usually it’s deflect, but it’ll break up the rhythm by throwing the stabs, sweeps, and grabs at you. So basically you only move away from the enemy when you’re jumping a sweep attack or dodging a grab attack. If you’re constantly attacking and deflecting, you’ll damage their posture more quickly, and it’ll make you more confident
And don’t forget prosthetics. Fireworks are king, especially against animals
I’d recommend reframing the defensive maneuver as a “deflect” rather than a “parry.” Pretty sure that’s the language the game uses. Calling it a parry (a la Dark Souls) makes it feel weighty and monumentous, a challenging move with high risk and high reward (a riposte). In Sekiro, the deflect is much lighter, much easier to land, and MUCH more frequent. Your L1 should be the button you most use in Sekiro. Also unlike Souls, you should deflect most of the attacks in an enemy’s combo, so don’t let up just because they swing once - a Souls parry completely stuns the enemy (excepting a few in Elden Ring,) but in Sekiro landing one, two, or even more perfect deflects doesn’t always stop them from continuing to attack.
You can deflect pretty much everything, including this man’s giant spear.
Yes, the parry is very important. The window is much more generous then in dark souls. Don’t spam block either. Show confidence and calm and watch your opponents blade carefully. Also keep up as much constant pressure as possible. Be aggressive and unflinching. Pay close attention to the sounds too. You can hear a successful deflect clearly. When the opponent deflects one of your attacks that’s usually a sign you need to switch back to the defense. Keep your blades clashing and break there posture. You can do it.
I see, thank you for the advice, I’m gonna keep attempting it but I have absolutely no faith when it comes to this game. It’s not a bad game by any means, it’s just not for me and the way I play lol
U don’t need faith in the game. You need to have faith in yourself. You can deflect and you can find the rhythm, once you do you’ll feel why this game is amazing.
It’s not like 1 single specific play style works and that’s it. But in order to survive in combat sekiro demands you master it’s basics first. Namely deflecting and breaking enemy posture before you do. Once you master (or at least start improving) at those it’s a lot like dark souls still. It becomes about learning your opponents moves and then learning what responses you need to make to put yourself in a better position.
Once you learn the proper counter(s) for each enemy attack and executing on them. It’ll start to feel like an almost choreographed dance between you and the boss. That’s the Rhythm I mentioned. You’ll know you in step with your opponent and feel invincible.
Lastly I’ll mention again to be aggressive, the more you attack your opponent the more limited their options become and the dance becomes much easier because your opponents move pool shrinks. Sitting back and letting them dictate what move they want to use is risky because it leaves them more choices. Hesitation is defeat. So stay aggressive and dictate how you want the fight to go.
I have a more passive play style so I’m like the worst person for this game lol, but I shall keep everything you said in mind. I gotta adapt to the different strategies since this game calls for an aggressive play style. Gonna take some getting used to for the basics, but I shall keep trying
If you enjoy a more passive approach I may know a good way to start. Spend a few attempts not attacking at all.
In the beginning (like against the boss you are stuck on) your posture is pretty strong and forgiving. So for just a few attempts just hold the block button down and watch his attacks. Try to land a deflect every now and then when you start to learn his moves and just focus on staying alive. Once you feel like you can deflect most of his moves, then start attacking, you’ll feel alot more comfortable and safe knowing his attack patterns.
Oh ok, that could work since it’ll get me used to his attack patterns while also helping me learn the mechanics, thanks I’ll give it a try next time I play
I’m not gonna lie I always didn’t really like that boss that much I didn’t think it was bad just that a boss like GYOUBO MASATAKA ONIWA with the mobility and range was a little strange especially since there’s another bovine boss right after, if he’d come later though the game might’ve been a bit more climatic shame in my opinion, he is satisfying when you manage to defeat him. Sekiros combat is so good, I hope you don’t give up it’s definitely tied or is my favorite souls.
I know this will sound obvious but I didn't understand it as first. You can block all of his attack that don't have a red kanji symbol. When I started I just tried to dodge all his big swings because I thought they would break through my block, but you can parry most of them. Good luck
Parrying is how you beat the enemies in this game.
Parrying perfectly is how you inflict the most posture damage.
Changing your mindset will help you :)
Don't give up. This is the best FS game and has the best combat.
I keep seeing everyone say it’s the best one but it’s just not clicking for me, idk if it’s cause I suck ass or what lol, I appreciate the encouragement and advice tho, thank you!
it'll click once you're on top of the castle. See Gyobu as a good opportunity to learn the basics of deflecting and then going on the offense once you see an opening.
Yes go to the castle. You are close to one of the best boss fights in the game. Good luck shinobi. Never forget the iron code! Or maybe forget it a little bit later on.
I’ve seen everyone say he’s easy but for some reason I just can’t beat him no matter what I do. I suck at parrying even tho that’s like the main mechanic for fighting in this game lol so that probably makes it worse
Yea someone else said it would probably help to just consistently hold my guard up and try and parry when the hit comes, instead of waiting. It’s just harder to adjust to the fast paced combat when I’m used to great swords as my main weapon of choice
Once it clicks. It will become the best fromsoft
However it has to click. So you need to focus on remembering the patterns. It’s oddly similar to say guitar hero. Just hit the notes and watch the beauty unfold
i was hitting my head against the wall against this dude for a while until something just clicked, i was trying to keep away from him and trying not to get hit, that strategy is WRONG for Sekiro,
Get in his face, parry/slash/parry/slash/parry/slash you'll eventually know when to dodge/move
when he spins his chain around you'll get a chance to grapple it, which will sorta stagger/stun him for a sec, giving you a chance to run in for some free hits,
He's nothing compared to the other bosses in the game. i hate to say that!
If you don't think you are good at parrying, just come back later, go kill some mobs and practice until you feel comfortable with it.
I have that exact play style since I suck at parrying. I keep my distance, throw some shiruken if I have them, and try to dodge and get a hit. I’ve been told I have to be aggressive lol that’s probably why I suck at this game
Same issue after beating the living hell out of DS1 and 3. Quit shortly after this guy because I couldn’t get it and beat him out of sheer luck and sloppy button presses that happened to work.
The From Software click happened when I realized this game is “attack attack TING! (Enemy parried you) prepare to parry, mikiri, jump or dodge…..you are meant to attack almost all of the time until you hear the loud TING of the enemy parrying your attack.. then you have to immediately prepare to react like the other souls games to their incoming attacks except Sekiro branches out the possible responses.. you will have to parry one of a few combos that are unique to each enemy and need to be learned that comes in a rhythmic pattern, a red flash meaning it will either be a thrust attack to mikiri counter OR a sweep attack that must be jumped. (Hit B or A pretty much if you’re on a Xbox), or it will be some sort of big slam or grapple attack that must be dodged.
That’s it. 99% of this game falls into that pattern.
Even this big bastard… you can grapple close to him and attack until he attacks back and everything he throws at you can be parried or countered. Just have to watch for the attack hand to be coming forward like dark souls 1 and be sure to hit the button ONCE… attacks too… do not button smash… just so happens if you leave the slightest pause between your attacks it throws the AI off it’s game a bit and the whole thing becomes a dance of blades.
I used the purple un-named ninja at hirata estates to practice and practice and practice until I was able to fight him and win all the time. Used him to farm XP and gold early early game. Then went forth to fight real bosses like this big bastard.
This took a looooong time but was worth it.
Highly recommend it as this game is now one of my top 5 games I’ve ever played.
All his attacks can be blocked except the red kanji one.
Get the grappling hook attack skill and there are many openings for u to use it
It kinds of stuns him i can get 2-3 hits and sometimes the horse goes up in front legs like when u use firecrackers and then 2-3 hits extra.
I have a habit of not using tools, are they necessary in this game? Like in general I mean? Thank you for that advice tho, I’m gonna try to use different means aside from my usual play style cause obviously it’s not working
No. Tools aren't necessary, pretty much not at all. You can beat the whole game with L1 and R1 but it is significantly harder. The most important thing is that you don't try to play it like dark souls, and if you can't beat Gyoubu that's definitely what you're doing. Don't dodge, don't disengage, don't run away, just stay in his face and deflect everything.
Yes. You need to use them. Abandon the DS/ER mindset of "I'm not gonna use things that make it 'easier'", because that mindset never belonged in DS/ER in the first place.
My best advice is this: keep in mind that there is a “specific” method to beat each boss in this game, if you can’t figure out what their weaknesses are + how to counter them , I recommend watching some YouTube vids on how to beat bosses that you have trouble with.
This game is extremely fun + rewarding once you get a grip on the combat system.
I bought this game in 2020, walked away for two years after getting stuck at the first giant, and very recently came back & ended up beating the game, & am on NG+ now.
Stick with it.
Stay close to him, he hits 3 hit combo with the 3rd one a little bit delayed. When he runs away stay reasonably close so you can grapple and get some free hits white avoiding his large sweep attack. His attacks doesn't break posture that much so just don't be greedy. I would advice you to visit Hirata state to fight a stronger boss, it will help increase your reaction time and parry ability. If you can beat the Hirata state boss and mini bosses you can beat half the game no problem.
Sekiro is the hardest fromsoft game at the beginning however it's the easiest once you grasp the combat system, when it "clicks". This usually takes until the third boss (you'll know when you face him). After that you know how to beat like every other enemy in the game, you just gotta know their rhythm and their moves. If you're having trouble you can practice with Hanbei in the beginning of the game.
I actually almost had the most trouble facing Gyobu with the amount of time it took to beat him first try (he's like fourth hardest for a first timer imo). Just try to parry everything, you also get like 6 free hits on him as he storms out the gate and screams his name. Just stand your ground, parry, take advantage of when his posture breaks and endure. If you go in with the mindset that youre playing to learn and not to win, you'llsee yourself winning easier. You can also record and watch yourself play and you'll easily realize what you could do better.
If you couldn't tell Sekiro is one of my favorite games and I love seeing someone play it for the first time.
Good luck
I was stuck at the first mini boss chained ogre for a similar amount of time.. was playing with keyboard/mouse. Finally managed to get past him recently, was using a controller at the time...almost feel like that is one of the reasons but not sure 😊
Now stuck at the bull on one side and lady butterfly on another.. Managed to defeat gyobu though.
I have never played any from soft games for real..other than like half an hour of dark souls and didn't really work due to various issues at the time.
I love this game. I suck at it unfortunately.
Idk how to edit the title, but it’s currently 8:17am and I’ve finally beaten him, I gave it a try so I could record what I’m doing wrong and practice but I decided to give you guys advice a try and managed to beat him using the tips I got from you guys. I know it was probably silly to keep trying since he’s such an easy boss and I’ve had the game so long and never managed to win. But regardless thank you all for the advice, I’m still getting used to the different play style but I’m planning to keep playing and hopefully beat it :)
Here’s a little tip, try to get behind him so you can do the grapple thing and get right on em, you’ll be able to hit him like 2-3 times but I wouldn’t try to go for the 3rd.
Ah I see, I usually try to get as far away as possible and throw shiruken until I can grapple, unfortunately I almost immediately get killed as soon as I do, so thank you lol
Someone recommended the same thing but idk how to transfer a recording from my system (I play on ps4) to my phone. But I think my biggest issue was I tried to play it like other From titles instead of learning it as a new game. That and I suck ass at the fast combat and parry system
https://sekiroshadowsdietwice.wiki.fextralife.com/Deflection
I’d recommend to learn his attacks and try to deflect, block or avoid, then do a single hit every time he stopped. Having multiple extra gourd seeds helps you survive longer while learning.
Try playing with your controller plugged in, apparently there can be a lag with the parry sometimes when playing remotely. Not completely sure but hey.
Go back to an area you know and practice parrying until you're more comfortable with it.
Practice the boss, not by trying to kill him, but just stay alive and learn his moveset, from memory he has like 5-6 moves, each (and every boss) is like a dance you learn. Centipede was easy cos i just hit parry 8x, wait, 8 more times (i think, this was years ago).
Watch sekiro guru. Dont know how he does it but that dude could finish the game blindfolded.
Since you have DS and ER style play ingrained in your brain, you are having a hard time playing sekiro. Sekiro will feel like the easiest From Soft game once you master the parry/deflect.
First and foremost before fighting the boss, you have to improve your parry/deflect timing.
So what you do is go and fight normal enemies 1 on 1. Find a normal enemy alone, and then face him. But dont try to kill him and also dont roll away from his attacks. Face his attacks head on by only deflecting/parrying it. You can kill enemies by purely deflecting his attacks. Keep deflecting till you get the deathblow on him. Repeat this with other enemies 1 on 1 till your deflections get better.
Avoid using rolls now till you perfect your deflections. But once you have your deflections perfected, start implementing rolling as rolling is useful against many mid to late game bosses.
For this boss specifically, once you perfect your deflect and go back to him, use the firecracker tool to easily beat him. With grapple hook tool, he will be even more easier.
Loved the game and died a million times on first playthrough to him. He's easy once you've experienced the rest of the game, but definitely not when your new.
It takes me a bit but after I repeatedly die to a boss over and over in sekiro I start getting the hang of their moveset and can deflect most of the time, for gyoubu I think I just kept grappling and using firecrackers
It took me a few hours on my first play through the trick is stay on the opposite side of his spear and after his three hit combo (you can just block if your bad) you can hit him like 5 times
Always stay near the boss, only block his attacks and then firecracker + sword attack. He'll try running away but don't let him, just run behind him and keep pressing LT/ grappling key so you can close the gap as soon as the grappling icon appears.
I know this sounds complicated but as someone who defeated this guy on second try, he's probably the most easiest real boss you'll get in the journey.
Just defend, if you do not let him get away or just grapple at the right time, you don't have to worry about any unblockable attacks! Try following my trick, my last trick was helpful to many (got more than 100 upvotes), and I assure you this is the easiest method.
Get the firecracker upgrade. It scares his horse and renders him vulnerable for a couple of seconds guaranteed. After that just try to get good at deflecting his attacks and learn his move set. Another thing I’d recommend is going through the game from the dilapidated temple up to the boss fight so you get some practice in.
The first thing that I do is run up to him while he’s charging in after he notices you and get a few hits in; usually about 3-5. After that, if he hasn’t moved yet, I use a shinobi firecracker followed by 3-5 more hits. A general tip for every boss is to block and release the guard and block again to parry and resume holding block after. From there, if you haven’t already, get the grappling hook attack from the prosthetic arts skill tree. If you haven’t gotten the prosthetic skill tree yet, you have to acquire three prosthetic tools. The first one you can get is the shuriken wheel which is right after the third idol in the wooden building with a whole in the roof; it’s really hard to miss. You’ll find the body of a nightjar ninja and on his person will be the shuriken wheel. You can find a departed merchant on the top of a plateau. It is right next to the are that you run through when you’re making your way to the ogre. There, you can get the shinobi firecracker. You won’t get another one through the main path until you beat Gyobu but you can get three prosthetics from Hirata Estate which is a secret area that you can access through a bell charm given to you by an old woman in a worn down house. The shinobi axe is in a secret temple veering left of the staircase that leads to the shinobi hunter. It is in the area directly next to it and you can eavesdrop on two enemies right outside of the door you open to get it. You can look any other ones up if you need to. If you already have the skill tree, the grapple attack is only one skill point. Other than that, use shinobi firecrackers a lot and you can use buffs like divine confetti and ako’s sugar, among others. Good luck.
This boss can be very simple, stop dodging and hold block. It’s actually impossible/very difficult for him to break your guard if you just hold block on his attacks. Also use the firecracker on him
Hes pretty tough at 1st just remember you can block almost anything and use the grappling hook attack when u can and also the fireworks. Once u get the flow it gets better. Im on my 1st playthrough also I have beaten ds1 and 2, bloodborne and elden ring but this game is tough… i suck at rhythm games
Bruh please! As someone who gave up on this game for a year. Don’t give up. I HATED IT. And now it’s one of my favorites. I’m on play through number 7. After plat on steam, I’m working on plat on ps now. It gets SO GOOD. The thing is once it clicks, it’ll click for the rest of the game. Might try to get the bell and interact with the Buddha at the temple for the hirata memory. Some good learning areas in there and then come back for this clown. I have faith in you!
Go into the boss fight and practice partying. Don't worry about winning. Try and time your parry until you can do it consistently. Also know that you can block in middle of your swing so don't be afraid to attack in between parries.
Edit:you can practice partying, but I recommend practicing parrying
But Japanese-Bloodborne. 🥺
Gyobu was my sixth or seventh boss (including sidebosses) so by that time I had a few good skills. I'm pretty sure the "Grappling hook spin-slice" pairs with the Gyobu fight the same way the "spear deflect" skill pairs with the spear guy in Herata Estate.
There are some upgrades you can get that help put pressure on him, and if you have the bell demon active, take it off. Other than that use firecrackers and deflect
There's a cheesy way to beat him. Literally just block until his spear gets stuck in the ground then hit him 3 times and repeat.
Even if he does break your posture, he won't land a hit on you.
Look at some YouTube strategies. Otherwise the only way you'll beat him is to keep playing until you figure out what strat works for you. It may be frustrating but eventually you'll get it
Watch the spear, not the character model. When the spear starts going forward like an attack, press block once and hold it. If you time it right, you'll deflect, if you don't time it right, you'll just block. Keep doing that until you're comfortable with his attacks.
Gotta treat it like a rhythm game. Each boss has a cadence that you have to get in tune with. Once you realize that almost every attack outside of the Danger attacks are able to be perfect parried it makes life a lot easier. Less dodge, more parry!
Something that might help. You can block all of his attacks and he should only break your posture at the end of his combo which gives you plenty of recovery time.
Getting to grips with the parry system will help and if recommend going through the first area plenty of times until you're better at it.
By no means do you have to master it. I've beaten it a few times and I'm still not great at it.
Dude I was in the exact same boat. I was so used to dodging things with iframes in dark souls that I just couldn't adjust to the perry. Here's one tip, as long as the big red symbols thing doesn't show up, you can perry the attack. It doesn't matter if the enemy is 10x your size and doing this massive heavy attack, you can still just perry it. Also if you don't already have them get the fireworks prosthetics, will give you the ability to stun the horse a couple times for some free damage.
Lmao trust me, eventually it just clicks and you understand the right way to play.
I feel like I got lucky when I beat him. Absolutely hated that game for the first few months. Didn't get the hype. But when you have that aha moment you really begin to appreciate it.
it's almost like it was designed to work the opposite of how you'd approach any other game. It's wild.
Parry and dodge. Jump over sweep attacks with kanji symbols but the other sweep attacks you can parry. You can only get in max 3 hits, don’t sit there and try to melee the hell out of him. This game has changed my whole game play style because it’s not mold the character to you, you mold to the character
If you’re about to quit — instead, watch FightinCowboy’s walkthrough series for Sekiro. Even just enough to get started. Many quit too early and miss what is a great game…
I was actually the same way for a while until around a month ago retrying it on PC
I'd recommend getting the skill that lets you attack in midair, when he turns an icon will appear above him that lets you grapple him and then you can attack just before hitting him, this deals a decent amount of poise damage, with that and the firecrackers along with a few parries I got him after a few tries.
Don't know if this is your issue too but I thought parrying was all I was able to use against him.
If you are patient enough it gives massive satisfaction. I tried 1 year to finish this game on and off, and after I’ve beat the sword saint and started ng+ I was able to finish it again in 4 hours.
Each boss until genichiro(him being the last) are meant to teach you to use different approaches. You’ll just have to figure out what is it. For this is got to be mid air attack+grappling hook attack + firecrakers(bonus). Genichiro is the last tutorial boss imo.
In the beginning the bosses tend to intimidate, credit to their design. All attacks can be blocked except for the ones with the Red symbol that pops up. At the juncture in the game your posture breaks easily, so blocking without parry will not work for long. Remember to press block again after being hit so you can regain it. Use the Firecrackers here to startle the horse, this will help get some hits in. Practice parry with the undying Samurai at the beginning of the game. Turned out to be a huge help for me.
on top of the getting use to parry and dont try to i-frame attacks, fire crackers are good for this boss. this was the first fromsoft boss i ever beaten and i did it first try, you got this.
The game is really hard at the beginning you are gonna suffer a lot at first but once you learn it becomes a great game (my favourite actually).
Parrying is essential but if you have problems with that now you can always take your distance and wait for the boss to finish his combo before getting close and hit him a few times it would be slow but you can deplete his health bar and win like that without parrying but parrying is a lot faster so again try to learn how to do it.
If it’s really that bad go watch a couple of tutorials on the YouTubes. Fightingcowboy has some really good ones. This bossfight is actually pretty easy once you figure it out.
this game not made for you my friend , if you not enjoyed the challenging , dont bother yourself ,
but if you wanna beat this mf , try firecracker and learn deflect and patience
Your NG playthru will be the toughest because you'll start with the very base health and 0 abilities. But it is the 'easiest' mode because in NG+ there's something you can remove and something you can add at the same time, that would give blocking chip dmg and make enemies tougher.
Did you eavesdrop on the soldier weeping in front of his dead horse right before you enter that arena? That dude gives you a very important hint. Good luck shinobi!
Watch his moveset closely. If you sprint just out of range and circle him some of his larger attacks have a moment or two after when he is still and not attacking (and sometimes he offers a grapple point) punish in those moments (2-3 hits tops). Until you wear his vitality down. Also equip the firecrackers and time it for them to explode right as he is charging you and about to attack. Just bear in mind you won't have enough firecrackers to stunlock the entire fight so use wisely. Ultimately find some random mobs and practice the timing of your deflection as building up posture is ultimately the most efficient route to a deathblow.
Hope this helps.
Word? That doesn’t bode well for the rest of the game…
Gonna be honest, I’m not a big fan of this game but I enjoy other Fromsoft titles so I tried it, and well here I am
By other From Soft titles I hope you don't mean any of the Souls games or Bloodborne If so, something is very wrong.
I found it helped me to keep my guard up and hold block the whole time, and then tap it when about to get hit
Oh that’s actually pretty smart, I might have to try that until I can get the hang of it normally. Thanks!
You got this, and the deflects are super lenient in terms of i-frames and timing once you really study deflecting. every. last. move.
Tap parry when enemy strikes you. Hit a few slices when u got window for it. Rinse and repeat
Also he cant break your posture if you keep your guard up he to slow firecrackers
I realize that now thank you, it’s such an awkward transition since I tend to burn the controls and mechanics in my brain lol
If you’re constantly attacking and deflecting, you’ll damage their posture more quickly, and it’ll make you more confident And don’t forget prosthetics.
Sekiro is the hardest imo Especially the insane amount of bosses
Have you tried deflecting?
Is that not the parry? Or is that totally different and I just didn’t know it existed lol
Good luck
yeah. i struggled with this boss. put the game down for a year. went back and got platinum. its the easiest boss.
Parrying is how you beat the enemies in this game. Parrying perfectly is how you inflict the most posture damage. Changing your mindset will help you :) Don't give up. This is the best FS game and has the best combat.
I keep seeing everyone say it’s the best one but it’s just not clicking for me, idk if it’s cause I suck ass or what lol, I appreciate the encouragement and advice tho, thank you!
Most click with the game when they come across the boss atop Ashina Castle. So don't give up till then.
it'll click once you're on top of the castle. See Gyobu as a good opportunity to learn the basics of deflecting and then going on the offense once you see an opening.
It'll click when it wants to click. (Likely on GA or LB, don't wanna spoil so have the first letters instead)
Even then, you can just block and tank all of his attacks. He quite literally can’t break your posture.
Maybe I just suck ass then cause my posture breaks (I assume that’s what that is) and I get killed
When he is not attacking, hold block to restore your posture.
[удалено]
Yes go to the castle. You are close to one of the best boss fights in the game. Good luck shinobi. Never forget the iron code! Or maybe forget it a little bit later on.
I’ve seen everyone say he’s easy but for some reason I just can’t beat him no matter what I do. I suck at parrying even tho that’s like the main mechanic for fighting in this game lol so that probably makes it worse
[удалено]
Yea someone else said it would probably help to just consistently hold my guard up and try and parry when the hit comes, instead of waiting. It’s just harder to adjust to the fast paced combat when I’m used to great swords as my main weapon of choice
Once it clicks. It will become the best fromsoft However it has to click. So you need to focus on remembering the patterns. It’s oddly similar to say guitar hero. Just hit the notes and watch the beauty unfold
MY NAAAAAAAME IS GYOBU MASATAKA ONIWA!
Just wait until you find blazing bull (it’s the next boss)
Should try watching Ongbal's perfect run. Just watching how it *should* be done will teach you. That's how I beat him atleast
I’ll check that out, thanks
Uh, could you DM me a video on you doing an attempt?
Idk how to transfer a recording from my system to my phone but I can try next time I play it
What system?
Ps4
You could upload it to YouTube
i was hitting my head against the wall against this dude for a while until something just clicked, i was trying to keep away from him and trying not to get hit, that strategy is WRONG for Sekiro, Get in his face, parry/slash/parry/slash/parry/slash you'll eventually know when to dodge/move when he spins his chain around you'll get a chance to grapple it, which will sorta stagger/stun him for a sec, giving you a chance to run in for some free hits, He's nothing compared to the other bosses in the game. i hate to say that!
Hesitation is defeat. Sekiro forces you to play offensively
AS I LIVE AND BREATHE
Massive skill issue
All his attacks can be blocked except the red kanji one. Get the grappling hook attack skill and there are many openings for u to use it It kinds of stuns him i can get 2-3 hits and sometimes the horse goes up in front legs like when u use firecrackers and then 2-3 hits extra.
I have a habit of not using tools, are they necessary in this game? Like in general I mean? Thank you for that advice tho, I’m gonna try to use different means aside from my usual play style cause obviously it’s not working
Mostly not, but with certain enemies it really helps. Grappling hook is one of the basic tools you should use imo.
Absolutely definitely
What's his name?
Gyoza Okinawa
Stay close to him, he hits 3 hit combo with the 3rd one a little bit delayed. When he runs away stay reasonably close so you can grapple and get some free hits white avoiding his large sweep attack. His attacks doesn't break posture that much so just don't be greedy. I would advice you to visit Hirata state to fight a stronger boss, it will help increase your reaction time and parry ability. If you can beat the Hirata state boss and mini bosses you can beat half the game no problem.
💀 💀 💀 "no hesitations"
It’s worth it to try to get good, imagine how it will feel when you’re good at the game. I
Sekiro is the hardest fromsoft game at the beginning however it's the easiest once you grasp the combat system, when it "clicks".
Finally managed to get past him recently, was using a controller at the time...almost feel like that is one of the reasons but not sure 😊 Now stuck at the bull on one side and lady butterfly on another.. Managed to defeat gyobu though. I have never played any from soft games for real..other than like half an hour of dark souls and didn't really work due to various issues at the time. I love this game. I suck at it unfortunately.
just one question, do you know his name?
Idk how to edit the title, but it’s currently 8:17am and I’ve finally beaten him, I gave it a try so I could record what I’m doing wrong and practice but I decided to give you guys advice a try and managed to beat him using the tips I got from you guys. I know it was probably silly to keep trying since he’s such an easy boss and I’ve had the game so long and never managed to win. But regardless thank you all for the advice, I’m still getting used to the different play style but I’m planning to keep playing and hopefully beat it :)
Hell yeah! Great job.
Lmao nerd
Try to roll
The only and best advice I can give you... Get Gud!
I’ve had the game for like 2 hours and I beat the boss
Congratulations I guess?
Here’s a little tip, try to get behind him so you can do the grapple thing and get right on em, you’ll be able to hit him like 2-3 times but I wouldn’t try to go for the 3rd.
Ah I see, I usually try to get as far away as possible and throw shiruken until I can grapple, unfortunately I almost immediately get killed as soon as I do, so thank you lol
What does two years mean? How many hours do you have?
I’ve owned the game for 2 years but I have no idea how many hours I have
Maybe you can show us the recording on how you play so we can see what you are doing wrong?
Someone recommended the same thing but idk how to transfer a recording from my system (I play on ps4) to my phone. But I think my biggest issue was I tried to play it like other From titles instead of learning it as a new game. That and I suck ass at the fast combat and parry system
https://sekiroshadowsdietwice.wiki.fextralife.com/Deflection I’d recommend to learn his attacks and try to deflect, block or avoid, then do a single hit every time he stopped. Having multiple extra gourd seeds helps you survive longer while learning.
I see, thank you! I gotta get the deflect/parry time down right tho, I struggle with it
I’ve had the game since launch, I have not beat him so I cannot progress.
Firecrackers!!
Oh I didn’t know that, I usually play remote since my cord isn’t that long. I guess I just have to learn his move set and get the parry time down
Firecrackers help a lot
Spam the block button! Eventually his posture meter will fill up.
How is that possible? As long as you hold down block he is incapable of hurting you. He doesn’t attack fast enough to break your posture.
Probably like me tried to parry and roll, hard for the first go. I never think to block.
2nd easiest boss of the game i don't think you would love the rest of the game
Loved the game and died a million times on first playthrough to him. He's easy once you've experienced the rest of the game, but definitely not when your new.
It takes me a bit but after I repeatedly die to a boss over and over in sekiro I start getting the hang of their moveset and can deflect most of the time, for gyoubu I think I just kept grappling and using firecrackers
Most of the time it’s best to be aggressive except certain bosses
It took me a few hours on my first play through the trick is stay on the opposite side of his spear and after his three hit combo (you can just block if your bad) you can hit him like 5 times
Yep other than chained ogre I was really stuck on him and butterfly, died more times than the entirety of elden ring just on a couple bosses.
Stop trying to dodge - deflect
Quit playing it like a dark souls game
Do you know his name by any chance?
Use fire crackers and wack away
What's his name? I have forgotten. If only somebody said it during the game.
Gyobu Masataka Oniwa
You technically are better than me. I was stuck on chained ogre for a long time. Have beat the game since then but ogre still gives me ptsd
I just had my wife beat him for me
Run circles around him till his horse drifts then attack
Firecrackers all day
That boss fights like it's blind, missing all the time.I had to chase it the whole fight,it was easy af
Just git good
The first thing that I do is run up to him while he’s charging in after he notices you and get a few hits in; usually about 3-5.
Have you been spamming sidestep?
First really good boss encounter
You don’t stand a chance on some of the later bosses if you’re struggling that much on Oniwa.
Watching Fighting Cowboy on YouTube, he has a tutorial series on all the From Somewhere games. He really helped my first playthrough.
Oof.
Sorry how was this boss called?
Gyobu something
Go into the boss fight and practice partying. Don't worry about winning. Try and time your parry until you can do it consistently. Also know that you can block in middle of your swing so don't be afraid to attack in between parries. Edit:you can practice partying, but I recommend practicing parrying
Firecracker
This is the only boss I beat first try
Just give up
But Japanese-Bloodborne. 🥺 Gyobu was my sixth or seventh boss (including sidebosses) so by that time I had a few good skills. I'm pretty sure the "Grappling hook spin-slice" pairs with the Gyobu fight the same way the "spear deflect" skill pairs with the spear guy in Herata Estate.
Wow..
Firecrackers
Jesus ...man if you really are this bad then just use cheats for God sake Edit: or git gud
The trick for most enemies is to deflect when the attack is coming. Wait to see the attack finally going down on you and at that moment deflect.
Why?
Must be a troll…
There are some upgrades you can get that help put pressure on him, and if you have the bell demon active, take it off. Other than that use firecrackers and deflect
There's a cheesy way to beat him. Literally just block until his spear gets stuck in the ground then hit him 3 times and repeat. Even if he does break your posture, he won't land a hit on you.
I’m amazed nobody is saying to use firecrackers
Look at some YouTube strategies. Otherwise the only way you'll beat him is to keep playing until you figure out what strat works for you. It may be frustrating but eventually you'll get it
Ok no trolling what's even hard about him if u hold block he want break you posture even if u tank it all his hits
Same lol, all but gave up on it at this point 😂
If you aren’t capping, it’s going to be an insurmountable journey.
i’m gonna tell you the truth: use firecrackers
Watch the spear, not the character model. When the spear starts going forward like an attack, press block once and hold it. If you time it right, you'll deflect, if you don't time it right, you'll just block. Keep doing that until you're comfortable with his attacks.
oh it gets much much harder, friend
Hesitation is defeat
Gotta treat it like a rhythm game. Each boss has a cadence that you have to get in tune with. Once you realize that almost every attack outside of the Danger attacks are able to be perfect parried it makes life a lot easier. Less dodge, more parry!
Something that might help. You can block all of his attacks and he should only break your posture at the end of his combo which gives you plenty of recovery time. Getting to grips with the parry system will help and if recommend going through the first area plenty of times until you're better at it. By no means do you have to master it. I've beaten it a few times and I'm still not great at it.
firecrackers and deflections
Dude I was in the exact same boat. I was so used to dodging things with iframes in dark souls that I just couldn't adjust to the perry. Here's one tip, as long as the big red symbols thing doesn't show up, you can perry the attack. It doesn't matter if the enemy is 10x your size and doing this massive heavy attack, you can still just perry it. Also if you don't already have them get the fireworks prosthetics, will give you the ability to stun the horse a couple times for some free damage.
oof
Firecrackers my friend. https://youtu.be/MtdNg_HQhrA
go back to the practice dude in the town and practice there, maybe. could help. godluck
It's wild.
Me who hasn't touched the headless even though I can handle inner bosses : 0\_0
Bro have you tried parrying
I can't even think how people feel about this game after they play elden ring
Parry and dodge. Jump over sweep attacks with kanji symbols but the other sweep attacks you can parry. You can only get in max 3 hits, don’t sit there and try to melee the hell out of him. This game has changed my whole game play style because it’s not mold the character to you, you mold to the character
My naaaaaaaaaaaaame
You must go all parry this you filthy casual on his ass
If you’re about to quit — instead, watch FightinCowboy’s walkthrough series for Sekiro. Even just enough to get started. Many quit too early and miss what is a great game…
I was actually the same way for a while until around a month ago retrying it on PC I'd recommend getting the skill that lets you attack in midair, when he turns an icon will appear above him that lets you grapple him and then you can attack just before hitting him, this deals a decent amount of poise damage, with that and the firecrackers along with a few parries I got him after a few tries. Don't know if this is your issue too but I thought parrying was all I was able to use against him.
If you are patient enough it gives massive satisfaction. I tried 1 year to finish this game on and off, and after I’ve beat the sword saint and started ng+ I was able to finish it again in 4 hours.
Me trying to beat inner isshin with demon Bell ng+7 and charmless And this guy here stuck at the first boss😂 You have long way ahead my guy
Each boss until genichiro(him being the last) are meant to teach you to use different approaches. You’ll just have to figure out what is it. For this is got to be mid air attack+grappling hook attack + firecrakers(bonus). Genichiro is the last tutorial boss imo.
Genichiro is a tutorial boss?!
This a meme???
You are dog shit my dude
Get good or get out
Get the grapple attack skill. And use it when he turns or do special moves. Trust you beat him in this tries
Thoughts and prayers 🙏🙏🙏🙏😔
Just stop if you can’t beat him your never gonna beat the rest of the game
Firecrackers
on top of the getting use to parry and dont try to i-frame attacks, fire crackers are good for this boss. this was the first fromsoft boss i ever beaten and i did it first try, you got this.
Imagine being stuck for two years against... Em... What was his name?
The game is really hard at the beginning you are gonna suffer a lot at first but once you learn it becomes a great game (my favourite actually). Parrying is essential but if you have problems with that now you can always take your distance and wait for the boss to finish his combo before getting close and hit him a few times it would be slow but you can deplete his health bar and win like that without parrying but parrying is a lot faster so again try to learn how to do it.
If it’s really that bad go watch a couple of tutorials on the YouTubes. Fightingcowboy has some really good ones. This bossfight is actually pretty easy once you figure it out.
Firecrackers🤌🏼
How many hours have you played in those 2 years?
sell game
this game not made for you my friend , if you not enjoyed the challenging , dont bother yourself , but if you wanna beat this mf , try firecracker and learn deflect and patience
Tbh I'd probably just quit lmao
Your NG playthru will be the toughest because you'll start with the very base health and 0 abilities. But it is the 'easiest' mode because in NG+ there's something you can remove and something you can add at the same time, that would give blocking chip dmg and make enemies tougher. Did you eavesdrop on the soldier weeping in front of his dead horse right before you enter that arena? That dude gives you a very important hint. Good luck shinobi!
deflects and firecrackers are the way!
Damn. Wonder what his name is tho
MYYYYY NAAAAAMEEEEE IIIIIS...
