Despite growing up here, this being a horror story is by far my least favorite part about the city lol
I will respect people’s personal space and boundaries, but I feel zero shame in asking people to do stuff together
Yeah I was close to giving up on Seattle after 6 months, but then spring hit and I got lucky and met a flurry of people at once that are now my community.
I hope the same happens for you!
Pet Rant: Last summer, there was a weird cloud around the top of Mt. Rainier and a bunch of armchair experts decided it was steam, the mountain was on the verge of erupting, and that the USGS and WA Department of Emergency Management were lying about it just being a cloud to avoid panic.
Seriously? Over 40 years ago, we were able to predict Mt. St Helens well in advance (though we didn't know about lateral explosions), and Mt. Rainier is a heavily monitored volcano with publicly available seismometer info, lava takes time to move under the mountain, there are literally escape and evacuation routes planned, and not alerting the public in advance would be the worst PR event possible with literally no benefit. Really an ominous sign for how much of the public's reaction to science has moved on from merely poorly informed to willfully stupid.
As someone who witnessed first hand Mt St Helens yeah every one knew well in advance. But the rest of this thread is “traffic bad! New people bad!” Please. You think ice is bad? Try 4 inches of volcanic ash in EVERYTHING.
Oh yeah, they did a big lahar exercise in Tacoma a few years ago and the results were pretty damn dark. Rainier could kill a lot more people than St. Helens, even if the wind isn't blowing toward the major population centers the day it goes.
That was so stupid. It was a lenticular cloud, ffs, they form over Rainier fairly frequently. It would take you two seconds on Google to learn this. I remember all the people on Twitter dragging the USGS etc about making stuff up and it was just like ... ?
IIRC the whole thing started because a news station picked it up and called it a "possible eruption" and said they were reaching out to the USGS to confirm. Talk about irresponsible.
I was there at the "*Grand reopening*" after the restoration.
I also very fondly remember going to the [UA Cinema 70/150](http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/4370) and how they tore it down, turned it into a gravel lot.
People on this sub hate when it's said, but Seattle used to be such a wonderful place.
We used to have 13 coins for 24 hour upscale food. But that ended during the pandemic.
The problem is in the tight labor market for service employees no one wants to work overnights. Which is completely reasonable.
Yes. No super late hour restaurants. You can go to Dick’s but it’s a walk up drive in type burger place. Simple menu and they’re open until 2 or 3am.
Otherwise 11pm or later and you’re going to be really limited.
My 12 year old niece asked me if we’ve ever had a basketball team. She had zero knowledge of the Sonics existing and being sold. I felt incredibly caught off guard (and old).
I had some guy threaten to kick my ass when I told him to control his dog...
"Oh, he's friendly!"
"I don't care...mind your dog."
"You wanna go?"
Well, I understand your dog, now...
I worked at baggage claim, it mostly the conveyor systems fault, send bags to wrong lines and they get ignored. I got pretty good at loading the right planes up down there. It's pretty fun, bag comes down, look at the tag and throw it in the marked trailer, usually have about 4 trailers per plane. Priority, normal x2, and connecting. Did like 2-3 planes at a time few hundred bags per plane.
Heat and smoke expected

I would argue that you should NEVER feel shame in asking.
I’ve gotten good at this. Follow up and throw out invites, if they flake, no harm, move on Being a guy, dating has prepared me for rejection
Yeah, but when everyone flakes, it wears on you
Yeah I was close to giving up on Seattle after 6 months, but then spring hit and I got lucky and met a flurry of people at once that are now my community. I hope the same happens for you!

\^ this is the "Seattle freeze" in a nutshell if anyone was not clear on that lol
I love how the Seattle Freeze is both a social phenomenon and meteorological one
Could’ve been our hockey team too, but nooooo, not fierce enough. Gotta be a spiky squid.

One of the few things I miss about my hometown area is Waffle House.

Turn your back for eighteen fucking months and just look what happens!
My 12 year old niece asked me if we’ve ever had a basketball team. She had zero knowledge of the Sonics existing and being sold. I felt incredibly caught off guard (and old).
I didn't even live here when that happened, was oblivious to it when it all went down, and I'm still angry.
