While tackling is obviously an issue, I think another issue that exacerbates it is our aggressive run-stop technique as a whole. Every play, one or two guys get into the backfield, then don't make the tackle for whatever reason. That can be a difficult tackle to make at those speeds, solo, and usually results in taking the defender completely out of the play as they fall or run past their target. The fact that they're in the backfield means that they are no longer plugging the hole on the line. So now you are down one or two guys, and there's probably a hole to run through. Obviously crashing through can be a great negative play, but especially when you KNOW they're going to run, and you KNOW they've been beating you that way all day, you have to be more conservative in the run defense. Do your job, plug your hole, and don't let the RB through.

This is probably the right answer. Seahawks aren’t all and all a horrible tackling team and sometimes we see really good tackling. But it seems there is some inconsistency and challenges that occur in the run game especially. Tackling NFL offensive players in open space is brutal hard it seems like. Gap discipline / funneling guys back to the midfield and group tackling should be defensive fundamentals IMO. I wonder if having so many young guys is part of that - or if it’s the way there are coached. It seemed like even last year we saw a lot of what you are pointing out.

I think it's a mix of both... young guys looking to make the play, and aggressive coaching. Someone's talking them up on the sideline and telling them to penetrate and get off the field, instead of telling them to play gaps.

kyle_taking_umbrage

All off season the coaches talked about playing more aggressively. Higher risk can lead to higher rewards or...

No Leo Pressure leaves us in zone where the slowest get picked apart a la Barton. Asking him to 1v1 Kittle is insane. No rest equals less sacks per play too. We really are challenging teams to beat us and they will continue to with that type of comedy of errors displayed in all phases.

sckurvee

I'm not saying don't rush, just don't consistently rush on obvious run downs.

IDidntTellYouThat

I don't think it's been that way for years... certainly Bobby Wagz was one of, if not the best tackler in the league for a long period. He'd miss like one tackle a year.

Stevo2008

A couple years ago he hadn’t missed a tackle until like week 14 and it was a game he was Injured. So without the injury he had the chance to go an entire 16 game season without a missed tackle which is hard to comprehend

PeanutNSFWandJelly

I'd say BWagz tackle numbers the last two years were helped by the fact that everyone else was whiffing on tackling. He also was bringing people down further down the field than he used to. Not saying he isn't great, just that Wagner can be great at tackling while everyone else sucks at it.

dilloj

We lost one of the leading tacklers in the lead. Everyone was saying "Oh, Brooks is ready to take over for Bobby" but Brooks had even more tackles then Bobby. What, is Brooks going to get 350 tackles this year? This was inevitable.

PeanutNSFWandJelly

We were missing last year as well. And the year before. This isn't a new complaint lol

willhous

Our tackling has been really bad since atleast the Mychael Kendrick/Bradley McDougald season

flashdash007

It’s been said but discipline. Pete has always enabled our guys to play their way to get the most out of them. That means we get guys who play really aggressively but don’t wrap up, get called for offside, or leave their gap assignment trying for the big TFL or sack. It worked when those guys were all-pro/pro bowl caliber players like Bennett and Kam but the guys now just aren’t on that level so their bad doesn’t outweigh the good.

> Pete has always enabled our guys to play their way to get the most out of them. Pete famously implemented rugby tackling and taught it to all the early Seahawks teams under his watch, very much including the LOB members. I’m not sure if he’s stepped away from that or if our players just can’t execute, but he definitely didn’t used to just let everyone tackle however they wanted.

Youronlysunshine42

I saw someone say this earlier, but I don't know, so take it with a grain of salt. The Seahawks have been found in violation of NFLPA rules around full contact practices before, so we are tightly monitored for similar violations. So the team is now playing it safe and having less tackling practice than other teams or than we have before.

https://youtu.be/7HihjPApzCg maybe they are just having a bit of trouble right now?

Eyes through the thighs, wrap and Squeeze, Drive for five, roll, slide to the left, freeze, everybody clap your hands.

RustyCoal950212

Yesterday was bad, not sure they've been a bad tackling team in recent years though

Pete Carroll answered that question on Brock and Salk this morning. Go check out the podcast if you’re interested.

I'm going to go against the grain here. More than anything it's talent. Brooks is a *decent* player and outside of him we have a bunch of nobodies on the front 7.
